Obama And Putin Held Phone Conversation

Tyler Durden's picture

Just out from the Kremlin:

On the initiative of the US, a phone call took place between Vladimir Putin and the President of the US, Barack Obama.

Under discussion were the various aspects of the extraordinary situation in Ukraine.

In response to the concern expressed by Barack Obama regarding the possible use of Russian armed forces in the Ukraine, Vladimir Putin drew attention attention to the provocative, criminal acts of the ultranationalist elements, in effect encouraged by the present authorities in Kiev.

The Russian president stressed the existence of real threats to the lives and well-being of Russian citizens and numerous compatriots located in the Ukraine. Vladimir Putin underscored that should the violence spread further to the eastern regions of the Ukraine and the Crimea, Russia reserves the right to protect its interests and the Russian-speaking population living there.

Then Putin told Hollande largely the same thing.

Here is how this same conversation looked like from the perspective of the US. Via Reuters:

U.S. President Barack Obama told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia had committed a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty by sending forces into Crimea and warned of consequences.

"The United States condemns Russia's military intervention into Ukrainian territory," the White House said in a statement outlining what was discussed in a 90-minute phone call between Obama and Putin.a

And in other news, the US president may or may not be present when needed.

Obama is just one of the ladies in that picture from the View. Incredible that anyone could take him serious. Just shows how contemptuous our masters are of us to put that thing in charge of our country.

CalibratedConfidence, I appreciate what you're saying with those pictures, but it's not Obama's fault that he's castrated. That's just the result of Western culture these past few decades. Would anyone who looks macho be elected these days???

Considering that every gov't position of any importance is held by the Cold War generation...with all the anti-Russian hate complex baggage that comes with it...

Having said that, it'll be a tough sell to convince Americans to die for Ukraine. Sure, there's plenty of idiots conditioned to say "yessir" but Syria was on a silver platter after the State Dept manipulated the "chemical attacks" and STILL the American public said "NO"...

I was born in '86, so anti-Russian propaganda has no real effect nor meaning to me. There's no real rallying cry for my generation towards Ukraine, Iran or Syria since the 9/11 high has been exhausted, and now all the twenty-somethings are still addicted to "defending freedom" or on the streets suffering withdrawl...the effects of which can be seen in the daily obituary in your local paper.

Despite my pessimism, I'm HUGELY optomistic towards the future. Syria was an amazing victory, and non-intervention in Ukraine will be even sweeter.

"STILL the American public said "NO""

Actually the White House didn't give a fuck about what the American public said. The British parliament said "NO" which ended the scam. Only then did Obama say he would ask Congress for a vote, knowing the US House would say NO.

That they don't care for public opinion is a given...but they've applied force at the expense of power one to many times in the past decade...and recent corruption and surveillance charges have only further destroyed their credibility and thus power, and with that their ability to provide force to reach a desired outcome.

I'll tell you why.  He is then bogged down in the Caucacus and in the Ukraine.  Ukranians hate the Russians, and a lot of trade must pass through to and from Russia to deal with another assymettric war on their border.  He'll consolidate power in the east, have them appeal for self rule, and he will support that.  Ukraine loses its eastern region. Both get what they want.

Shash:

Which is why there will be no hot war.

I've repeatedly stressed that 2014 Ukraine = 1956 Hungary as far as the Western Military / Industrial / Orwellian / Oligarch Complex (MIO2C) living up to the promises - implicit and explicit - made to the competing group of oligarchs who booted out Y & Co. using the neo-Nazis and lunatic ultra-right wing fringe.

Obastard's stiffing the NSC meeting may actually be that he wasn't invited by the "serious people," and in truth he is now relegated to nothing more than a TOTUS reader.

Russia has to protect the entirety of its pipelines - they pump Nat gas out, and Euros in. That reality is immutable, and the only real reason Putin might go all in.

If he truly believes this is a grab by the western MIO2C to steal the pipelines, he has no alternative since they truly represent a life or death issue of Russia's economic survival - the absolute criteria to decide yes or no for war.

The western MIO2C is "the madman" in all this. If Russia is faced with economic obliteration, MAD is no longer mad, since it's "death to Russia" down either course.

At that point, you may as well obliterate everyone, and bring the temple down on the Philistines as well as yourself.

As I previously posted, welcome to the End Times.

22.21 We now have the White House read out of that call which lasted 90 minutes:

"President Obama spoke for 90 minutes this afternoon with President Putin of Russia about the situation in Ukraine. President Obama expressed his deep concern over Russia's clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is a breach of international law, including Russia’s obligations under the UN Charter, and of its 1997 military basing agreement with Ukraine, and which is inconsistent with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the Helsinki Final Act. The United States condemns Russia’s military intervention into Ukrainian territory.

"The United States calls on Russia to de-escalate tensions by withdrawing its forces back to bases in Crimea and to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine. We have consistently said that we recognize Russia’s deep historic and cultural ties to Ukraine and the need to protect the rights of ethnic Russian and minority populations within Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has made clear its commitment to protect the rights of all Ukrainians and to abide by Ukraine’s international commitments, and we will continue to urge them to do so.

"President Obama told President Putin that, if Russia has concerns about the treatment of ethnic Russian and minority populations in Ukraine, the appropriate way to address them is peacefully through direct engagement with the government of Ukraine and through the dispatch of international observers under the auspices of the United Nations Security Council or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). As a member of both organizations, Russia would be able to participate. President Obama urged an immediate effort to initiate a dialogue between Russia and the Ukrainian government, with international facilitation, as appropriate. The United States is prepared to participate.

"President Obama made clear that Russia’s continued violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would negatively impact Russia’s standing in the international community. In the coming hours and days, the United States will urgently consult with allies and partners in the UN Security Council, the North Atlantic Council, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and with the signatories of the Budapest Memorandum. The United States will suspend upcoming participation in preparatory meetings for the G-8. Going forward, Russia’s continued violation of international law will lead to greater political and economic isolation.

"The people of Ukraine have the right to determine their own future. President Obama has directed his Administration to continue working urgently with international partners to provide support for the Ukrainian government, including urgent technical and financial assistance. Going forward, we will continue consulting closely with allies and partners, the Ukrainian government and the International Monetary Fund, to provide the new government with significant assistance to secure financial stability, to support needed reforms, to allow Ukraine to conduct successful elections, and to support Ukraine as it pursues a democratic future."

After listening for 90 minutes Vlad replied "Fuck you" and hung up.

Ukrainian Navy flagship takes Russia’s side – report

Ukraine’s Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has reportedly refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russia’s side and is returning home after taking part in NATO operation in the Gulf of Aden flying the Russian naval flag.

There has been conflicting information on where exactly the vessel is, but a Russian senator has confirmed to Izvestia daily that the frigate defected to the Russian side.

Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag,” Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia daily.

He said the flagship is on its way back to the Black Sea after drills in the Mediterranean. “The crew has fulfilled the order by the chief commander of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Yanukovich,” he added.

Does anyone really believe these would be the guys who will start a range war with Russia, when "collectively" they can't find their own rectums and would need a $400 million loan to do study to figure out how to locate one.

You mean corruption like sending in $5 billion from the U.S. and EU to destabilize an elected President who won with foreign observers at the poll watching in 2010 destroying that legitimate government's property, arming "citiziens" with weapons they confiscated from their own government to kill police -then negotiating with that same government to compromise with those individuals for temporary seats in their Parliament and to hold referendums and early elections in that compromise deal only to be overtaken by a "coup"?  THen having the President of U.S. call those "protestors" peaceful?

If these are the kind of gentlement you call "legitimate" I hope Putin provides them with a lesson they won't soon forget!

This move by Putin in the Crimea is primarily all about securing the Russian naval base at Sevastopol.

"On April 27, 2010, Russia and Ukraine ratified the Russian Ukrainian Naval Base for Gas treaty, extending the Russian Navy's lease of the Sevastopol base for 25 years after 2017 (through 2042). The ratification process in the Ukrainian parliament encountered stiff opposition and erupted into a brawl in the parliament chamber. Eventually, the treaty was ratified by a 52% majority vote—236 of 450.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sevastopol#Russian_naval_base_and_ownership...

Note the closeness of the 2010 vote in the Ukrainian parliament (52% majority) and the fact that the debate was so heated there was a brawl on the floor of the Parliament. If that vote were held today it would be defeated.

For Putin this possibility of losing his naval base lease is unacceptable.

Annexing the Crimea would secure this strategic chess piece and the surrounding squares.

Let us be quite clear. If there were no Russian naval base in the Crimea, then there wouldn’t be any Russian occupation of the Crimea.

Putin is committed to securing his naval base at Sevastopol. He won’t back down from this because he sees it as a strategic issue. This is Putin’s ‘red line’ … and it involves a major Russian naval base.

The question is how Western leaders regard this issue.

Is the goal of squeezing the Black Sea fleet out of Sevastopol a ‘red line’ issue for the West?

This about sums it up in dark satire that isn't funny.

To say the U.S. has overplayed it's hand at precisely the worst time possible like they did with Georgia in 2008 is an understatement! Any coincidence of what took place with the banks just a few months after Georgia got it's ass handed to them?

Meanwhile the GOP Senators are making all the predictable mouth frothing remarks about NAto and UN Troop supervision of any Russian intervention.

Irreality, as Putin dangles the red herring and waits for EU; aka Merkel to make her call. There is only ONE person who has a vital interest in Russian Gas and therefore holds the TRUMP card in Ukraine; and that is Merkel.

Merkel unlike the US DOES NOT BELIEVE IN MILITARY/NATO solutions but in negotiated geopolitical deals. That is the legacy from Schroeder's presidency of the North slope pipe and all that Ost politik century old German strategy that Merkel as ex-East German appreciates. Apparently, her most admired historical figure is Catherine the Great, Russian Czarina of German origin...

Unfortunately she has to wait for American Russian bluster and stand off to subside; as this is still the world of Yalta in Eastern Europe.

Timochenko will be her card; thats my gut feeeling.

But all that depends on how the US/RUssian stand off now evolves. And we can expect a lot of hard words and sabre rattling and UN decisions and Kerry to Kiev shuttle diplomacy. Just like Syria it will have to face "fait accompli" in the end.

And then, Enter Mutti...

This is between Kissinger/Brzezinski and Putin.  There's nothing new, for better or for worse, in US policy since Kissinger was officially Secretary of State.  Look at the backgrounds of all the shining stars at State; Nuland and the rest.  All connected to those two.  And the policy is the same, and it's actually been a smashing success, considering its true aim.  Create firey havoc all around the perimeter of Russia and China.  Get the official economies under the yoke of the IMF/Western Banks.  Get the governments to bleed their subjects white to pay off the West.  Gain a monopoly on all the strategic resources, or at least create so much chaos nobody else can access them.  We don't have the army, money or political will to actually have an old-fashioned empire, so we'll do it the new-fashioned way; by destroying civil society everywhere and picking up the biggest pieces.  Why do you think we always ally ourselves with the most vicious and unreasonable terrorists, like Al-Quaeda and Svoboda/Pravy Sektor and all the rest?  Because they'll cause maximum violence and chaos and they'll never settle like reasonable people would.

I don't have the Putin man-crush, but he's only playing the hand Kissinger/Brzezinski have dealt him.  Putin knows exactly what he is and isn't willing to take.  Western Ukraine as a rump state full of fascist paramilitaries beholden to Western banking interests he migh be willing to accept, as long as he gets Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, the terrain to create impregnable borders, and a way to deal with the influx of refugees as the heirs to Bandera do what they always do.  Putin and the Kissinger/Brzezinskin acolytes understand each other.

Keep in mind that both Kissinger and Brzezinski are servents to higher authority.

They are not the owners of the 'assets'.  They are servents to the owners.  There are owners and then there are those who work for the owners, either directly or indirectly.  Someone explained this to me long ago though it took a while for me to understand how it related to Government.

The owners have all the real power.

Do you know who the owners are?

A referendum on the political status of Crimea will take place on March 30, almost two months earlier than previously planned on May 25.

This could set the stage for a formal declaration of further autonomy or full independence of Crimea and possibly union with Russia. Such a move would not only formalize Russia's influence over Crimea.

This would also complicate any plans by Kiev to seek integration with the European Union due to EU rules on ambiguous borders.

Syria’s Chemical Weapons Stockpiles to be Transferred to the Italian Mafia?

http://www.globalresearch.ca/syrias-chemical-weapons-stockpiles-to-be-transferred-to-the-italian-mafia/5369399

Does the disposal of Syria’s chemical weapons by the two selected waste disposal companies, namely Finland’s Ekokem and France’s Veolia require a contractual arrangement (or “agreement”) with Italy’s most powerful criminal syndicate on behalf of the Nobel Peace Prize winning Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)?

Read down. Its a long saga…

On September 12, last year, Syria’s President al-Assad committed to surrender Syria’s chemical weapons, with the caveats that the United States must stop threatening his country and supplying weapons to the terrorists. He has been as good as his word. The same cannot be said for the US and its boot licking allies.

Three days earlier US Secretary of State John Kerry – who had been killing Vietnamese in the US onslaught on Vietnam as American ‘planes rained down 388,000 tons of chemical weapons on the Vietnamese people (i) – had threatened Syria with a military strike if the weapons stocks were not surrendered within a week, stating that President Assad: “isn’t about to do it and it can’t be done.”…

All in all, why was Albania considered?

It is surely coincidence that on 3rd October last year, Tony “dodgy Iraq dossier” Blair, also an enthusiastic backer of Washington and NATO in their Balkans blitz, was appointed as advisor to the Albanian government to advise the impoverished country how to get in to the EU. Heaven forbid he might have advised that taking on lethal weapons no one else was prepared to touch, might tick quite a big approval box and made a call to someone somewhere in Washington. This is of course, entirely speculation.

However, as Pravda TV opined at the time, apart from the sorely needed financial boost: “It will increase the status and prestige of a poor country in Europe, Albania is in Europe’s backyard, in this case it will be going foreground.”(iv)

Belgium and France also Decline: “There Remain very few Candidates” for the Task; “the Hunt Continues”

Belgium and France also declined an invitation to dispose of Syria’s weapons, with Ralph Trapp, a consultant in disarming chemical weapons quoted as saying that “there remain very few candidates” for the task; “the hunt continues” commented The Telegraph (18th November 2013.)

The trail goes cold as to how many other governments may have been frantically begged to accept cargo loads of poisoned chalices as the US imposed clock ticked, but Italy caved in allowing around sixty containers to be transferred from a Danish cargo ship to a US ship in the Italian port of Giola Tauro, in Calabria, with further consignments also expected to arrive.

The permission caused widespread demonstrations in Southern Italy, the government accused of secrecy and one demonstrator summing up the prevailing mood:

“They are telling us that the material carried is not dangerous, but in fact nobody knows what is inside those containers.”

Not dangerous eh? Does any government, anywhere ever tell the truth?

Italy Says Yes. Not Dangerous. Send the WMD to Calabria. It will Help the Local Economy, But Watch Out for the Calabrese Mafia

The Giola Tauro port (right), which accounts for half the Calabria region’s economy “has been in crisis since 2011”, with four hundred workers on temporary redundancies- out of a total workforce of thirteen hundred. Not too hard to arm twist, the cynic might think.

The port also suffers from allegations of being a:

“ major hub for cocaine shipments to Europe by the Calabria-based ‘Ndrangheta mafia.” However, Domenico Bagala, head of the Medcenter/Contship terminal where the operation is planned countered with: “Since Gioia Tauro handles around a third of the containers arriving in Italy, it is normal that it has more containers that are seized”, adding: “We operate in a difficult territory but we have hi-tech security measures in place.”

Calabria is, in fact, plagued by corruption and organized crime. A classified cable from J. Patrick Truhn, US Consul General in Naples (2nd February 2008) obtained by Wikileaks stated:

“If it were not part of Italy, Calabria would be a failed state. The ‘Ndrangheta organized crime syndicate controls vast portions of its territory and economy, and accounts for at least three percent of Italy’s GDP (probably much more) through drug trafficking, extortion and usury.” Further: “During a November 17-20 visit to all five provinces, virtually every interlocutor painted a picture of a region …throttled by the iron grip of Western Europe’s largest and most powerful organized crime syndicate, the ‘Ndrangheta.”(v)

Moreover:“The ‘Ndrangheta is the most powerful criminal organization in the world with a revenue that stands at around fifty three billion Euros (seventy two billion U.S. dollars – forty four billion British pounds)” records Wikipedia, noting operations in nine countries, on four continents. Arguably, a less ideal transit point than Calabria for a stockpile of chemical weapons would be hard to find.

Of special concern to Carmelo Cozza of the SUL trade union is the port’s neighbouring village of San Ferdinando which has protested the operation: “The schools are right next door!”(vi)

However, when it comes to dodgy dealings, organized crime could seemingly learn a thing or two from the EU. Large amounts of Syria’s financial assets, frozen by the European Union, have simply been spirited from accounts, in what the Syrian Foreign Ministry slams as: “a flagrant violation of law.”

Last week the EU endorsed the raiding of Syria’s financial assets frozen across Europe and the the transfer of funds to

“ … the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) … a flagrant violation of the international law and the UN Charter and understandings reached by the executive board of the OPCW”, commented a Foreign Ministry source, adding: “the European step violates the resolution of the OPCW executive board adopted on 15thNovember 2013 which acknowledged Syria’s stance which was conveyed to the Organization, officially stating the inability to shoulder the financial costs of destroying the chemical weapons.”

The theft of Syria’s moneys was condemned as a: “swindle policy practiced by some influential countries inside the EU at a time when they reject to release frozen assets to fund purchase of food and medicine which is considered the priority of the Syrian state … (meanwhile) the EU allowed its members to arm the terrorist groups which are responsible for bloodshed in Syria … ” the source added.”(vi) It is hard to disagree.

The EU/UN/OPCW has apparently learned well from the UN weapons inspectors and other UN benefits from the Iraq embargo, which bled the country dry from “frozen” assets, to which they helped themselves, as the children died at an average of six thousand a month year after year, from “embargo related causes.” As the UN spent Iraq’s moneys, Iraq’s water became a biological weapon, the lights went off and medical and educational facilities largely collapsed. Are UN embargoes the UN’s shameful new money spinner?

So, can things get worse in the black farce which is the chaotic, dangerous, disorganised disposal attempts of Syria’s chemical materials? You bet they can.

The companies selected to destroy the chemicals are Finland’s Ekokem and the US subsidiary of the French giant Veolia.
