Memo to Obama: This Was Their Red Line!

Memo to Obama: This Was Their Red Line!
In 1783 the Crimea was annexed by Catherine the Great, thereby satisfying the longstanding quest of the Russian Czars for a warm-water port. In fact, over the ages Sevastopol emerged as a great naval base at the strategic tip of the Crimean peninsula, where it became home to the mighty Black Sea Fleet of the Czars and then the commissars.
For the next 171 years Crimea was an integral part of Russia—a span that exceeds the 166 years that have elapsed since California was annexed by a similar thrust of “Manifest Destiny” on this continent, thereby providing, incidentally, the United States Navy with its own warm-water port in San Diego. While no foreign forces subsequently invaded the California coasts, it was most definitely not Ukrainian and Polish riffles, artillery and blood which famously annihilated The Charge Of The Light Brigade at the Crimean city of Balaclava in 1854; they were Russians defending the homeland.
And the portrait of the Russian ”hero” hanging in Putin’s office is that of Czar Nicholas I—whose brutal 30-year reign brought the Russian Empire to its historical zenith, and who was revered in Russian hagiography as the defender of Crimea, even as he lost the 1850s war to the Ottomans and Europeans. Besides that, there is no evidence that Putin does historical apologies, anyway.
In fact, its their Red Line. When the enfeebled Franklin Roosevelt made port in the Crimean city of Yalta in February 1945 he did know he was in Soviet Russia. Maneuvering to cement his control of the Kremlin in the intrigue-ridden struggle for succession after Stalin’s death a few years later, Nikita Khrushchev allegedly spent 15 minutes reviewing his “gift” of Crimea to his subalterns in Kiev in honor of the decision by their ancestors 300 years earlier to accept the inevitable and become a vassal of Russia.
Self-evidently, during the long decades of the Cold War, the West did nothing to liberate the “captive nation” of the Ukraine—with or without the Crimean appendage bestowed upon it in 1954. Nor did it draw any red lines in the mid-1990?s when a financially desperate Ukraine rented back Sevastopol and the strategic redoubts of the Crimea to an equally pauperized Russia.
In short, in the era before we got our Pacific port in 1848 and in the 166-year interval since then, the security and safety of the American people have depended not one wit on the status of the Russian-speaking Crimea. Should the local population now choose fealty to the Grand Thief in Moscow over the ruffians and rabble who have seized Kiev, what’s to matter! Worse still, how long can America survive the screeching sanctimony and mindless meddling of Susan Rice and Samantha Power? Mr. President, send them back to geography class; don’t draw any new Red Lines. This one has been morphing for centuries among the quarreling tribes, peoples, potentates, Patriarchs and pretenders of a small region that is none of our damn business.

It's time for another republican idiot to come out of the woodwork and boldly declare "We are all Crimeans!".
Honestly, the Viet Cong should have killed him in his bamboo cage.

It's hard to tell if I should root for the communists.......or the other communists.
But it would explain why the voting on these comments is all over the map.
In the grand scheme of things, why should Crimea not be part of Russia, other than the way Putin has decided to bring this about? I get that the world cannot tolerate unilateral action of this sort, but the U.S. has precious little authority with which to criticize, or indeed resist, Russia. We have Dick Cheney to thank for that.

Oil is now up $2 barrel More money for Russia, less for the E.U.
Decisions have consequences.
I now believe I know where this site and Tyler originate from.
David Stockman, the AUTHOR of this article, was the Office and Management Budget Director...
UNDER PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN.
That is where this article ORIGINATED. He is a Libertarian.
He is an ANTI SOCIALIST and hated the Communist Soviet Government.
Any questions???
SO Tyler is now posting Russian propaganda?
I appreciate alternative views but this reads like it came from the Kremlin.
david stockman is an american known for
his association with the raygun supply side
economic "revolution" that collapsed the soviet
union economically, maybe deep kremlin?
SO Tyler is now posting Russian propaganda?
Don't know what you're bitching about...all this has cleared by Axelrod and Jerrett. To be safe....they even ran it by Cheney and Rove.
Are you starting to understand this yet?
Interesting all the thumbs down, but this has become a pro-Russian blog in many ways. Putin is not to be admired or emulated, his smug condescension would be very annoying if I were a Russian citizen. Sadly, this is all the Russian people have ever known is totalitairan or autocratic rule, and it always comes back to that in times of turmoil. They freaked in the 90s with the breakup of the Soviet Union, to give rise to the bastard Putin in 2000. Any parliamentary approvals should be seen as a farce and decreed by this dictator. Snowden can have him too. I am sure glad I don't live there, even with all the problems the USA faces.
The thumbs down are probably because he misidentifies Stockman as Tyler, and history as propaganda.
I do not like the pro-Putin bias of other articles, but come on man read the by-line.
this has become a pro-Russian blog in many ways
I think it's more of an anti-marxist, anti-muslim brotherhood blog at this point....but thanks for noticing.
BK1037 - After Facism and the upper suits steal all the loot from the little guy (then ship it overseas) what happens next is huge holes in state and local government and of course huge household debt. The heist is always the same anywhere these days but the aftermath is Marxism. The government forces the people to fill those financial holes, one little guy paying for other little guys.
As an American citizen I do not approve. I am not a big Putin fan, Putin is not a saint. But the US has no moral authority any longer to project and spur revolutions for energy conquests. I do not benefit from DC's war profiteering or paying taxes to protect private investments of politicians like the Senators of Rome. Or corporations bribing the politicians to sell out America to the Chinese for pennies on the dollar. The merchent marines worked just fine.
Your just figuring out that the American majority feels the same way as I do? I used to help DC like calling RC Covozos in 2002 at the White House and telling him of possible tech exploits of politicos email. Other things too but cant say them. But after 2010 and seeing not ONE major looter in banking get jailed or even fired, I stopped helping. I am no enemy, I just serve my own interest which is to protect the people since your kind isn't. I still pay taxes and try to follow laws but can't aid a government that says it has the right to indefinately detain me or my American citizens or kill us without due process. We became the evil empire. Russia is a bear. It can be contained but we have been fucking with it. I prefer Mededev and hia desire to increase trade, he actually emulates our philosophies. But fucking with Putin is going to get a lot of people killed. If I were him I would atart to feel I have nothing to lose by pushing the big red button.
Does this clarify our meaning American collective opinion for you? The consensus doeant love Puttie. We are sick of the empirical rob the little guy globally (including America) bullshit. It's obviously turning the world into a toilet for the sake of a few thousand that think they need 12 yachts and 12 mansions to feel good about themselves. Like Caligula. Disgusting.
there is no arguing true history.

No. If it happens then it is very likely that you will not read about it.
Forget the Ukraine, what will be Washington's response when California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and a big chunk of Colorado decide they want Independance as Azlatan? After all, these terratories were once Mexico, what happens when they want to return {like the Ukraine}? The majority of the population will be mexican. What reverse logic will Washington try to use to hold onto them?
or new york to the dutch or english or spanish or

Ahah! A Daily Double!
how many lives would you like to wager?
I doubt Mexicans who ran across a desert to get away from Mexico are going to want to join it again.
Get your history right ... Mexico claimed California, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico for only 38 years with only a tiny population and no political representation. The US on the other hand has occupied the land for 160 years with millions of people. Azlatan is a delusion ... the Mexicans that arrive here after great personal peril what to be citizens of the US ... disclosure, I drink Mexican beer.
America, the stooge of the world
Yes we can....and just did!
There is a drought affecting California. How about we focus on replacing California's lost food production and feed the nation? You know what? The roads where I live suck. How about fixing those too? Forget Russia and her problems let's focus on the U.S. of A. If there is anytime leftover, let's propose a fix for the economy that does not involve WWIII and the destruction of an entire generation.
Very nice winter storm in California, Mammoth Mountain claiming four feet of fresh snow.
Keep it comming mama nature!
Cheese, it's all cheese, Gromit ! As I said on the page about the two hundred year drought; it'll be funny if it rains in California next year; of course no one will mention the global warming cults rantings.
We export enormous quantities of food and have loads of arable land that's been devoted to ethanol production or cattle feed or (especially in the East) left to grow wild. We'll be OK.
All the bedwetting over the cattle herd getting smaller is unjustified too -- it's because US meat consumption has been declining for 10 years. Which is a good thing -- much less water required.
What the heck is with Rand Paul? He tweeted:
Senator Rand Paul @SenRandPaul Feb 28
Russian intervention in Ukraine would be dangerous for both nations, and for the rest of the world. http://www.paul.senate.gov/?p=press_release&id=1115 …. #Ukraine
His dad needs to have a long talk with him.
I'm missing the part where he says we should intervene.
Apparently some Western nations are in the process of seizing certain external assets of Putin and his oligarch buddies, such as property in Kensington, Knightsbridge & Mayfair, Premier League football teams, and the Brooklyn Nets basketball team, to name but a few. Of course this will have little to no impact on the Russians, who care little for these minor assets and only bought them to show off and demonstrate that when it comes to corruption and cronyism, the West is a mere poseur.
Rumor has it that many of these assets have drawn the attention of potential purchaser Prince Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia, though another plan has the assets as backing for the new currency of the nation of Western Ukraine.
I'll never understand why anyone, in today's world, wants to invest in hugely overvalued British assets such as London real estate, but the BoE should count itself lucky that Russian oligarchs are still prepared to do so, thereby helping to ease Britain's current account deficit.
To play hard-ball is to shoot themselves in the foot. Oligarchs pulling up stumps and heading home would do serious damage to the mirage of European stability supported by a bubble of hot credit, running the risk of sending it plummeting back down to earth, that being a foundation of resource support that has eroded severely.
Bearing in mind that economies run on energy and that political stability for an energy importer depends on secured, reliable foreign flows, what does the following data foretell for the UK?
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d75nHIZK3f0/UmproyKY2CI/AAAAAAAALIM/HyMP7SA8ad...
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4fNbIeNznkU/UmprkhAlNTI/AAAAAAAALIE/NfPT9hpAti...
(I keep posting that first plot because the hard reality is so powerful that people need to see it. All talk of "recovery" needs appropriate scorn against an energy background like that).
The UK (and the rest of Europe) is in no position to be playing hard-ball against an energy-exporting nuclear power. Hell, they're no longer even in any position to negotiate. Either they convince the US to get into a hot war with Russia & China, or they start making some concessions to the East. There is no other option.
(ps: didn't red you Chindit, I value your posts).
One is never surprised if one never expects a leader---any leader---to make wise moves (though my post was tongue in cheek). If leaders made wise moves, there would be no history books. Instead, leaders do what humans do, or what most anyone would do if he had power and privilege. There is a direct correlation between having power and using it unwisely. Being an armchair quarterback is a blessing of sorts, because one can forever maintain the delusion that he would do better if only. Privilege of any sort is insidious in the way it weakens the soul and damns the possessor. Anyone who has either achieved considerable wealth or been in the halls of power---and is honest---knows this intimately. There are no heroes.
Putin finds himself in an enviable position, sitting atop lots of natural resources, but he is no more deserving of what it affords than the sheikhs who tool around Dubai in Bugatti Veyrons and Pagani Huayras. It simply is what it is, a result of random chance and a Universe with an impish sense of humor.
As for any reception I might get in the comments section here, how can anyone really take any of it seriously? Nobody here is going to change the direction of the wind, so it’s all just for entertainment purposes. We're in a soundproof room and just talking amongst ourselves. Heck, how seriously can it be taken when one sees there are Putin and Palin fanbois in a sizable minority or perhaps a majority? (Since I have seen Palin speaking live, and spoken to folks who tried to brief her during her VP campaign, I don’t need anyone in the MSM to convince me she isn’t the brightest light in the sky, and I also know that if she was exactly the person she is today, except that she looked like Janet Reno and not some teen Oedipal fantasy, nobody would know who she is.)
Wise, true and amusing words. I find no disagreement. Seems I wasn't the only one to miss the tongue-in-cheek though.
While I have every respect for David Stockman being perhaps one of the few if not the only one of native Ukrainians to read the Great Deformation, it pains me deeply to dismiss his current screed as sheer rubbish.
This is quite a stretch to lump together ethnicity and language onto the same map and attempt to draw any meaningful extrapolation: in fact rural population of the entire country (sans Crimea) uses Ukrainian as a mode of daily communication. Only few isolated (though populous) urban centers of the south east are mostly Russian speaking.
Likewise the history lesson presented is both dubious and irrelevant. Why not dig a bit further back to four hundred years of Ottoman rule, or to Sula and Mithridatic wars before that, or to Xenophon's march of 10000 over the same land or to Olbia, Khersoness and other Greek city states of the 5th century B.C., or to the Achilles tomb nearby?
What matters at the end is that Russia is a signatory of the Budapest protocol of 1994 guaranteeing to respect unviability of territorial integrity of Ukraine in exchange of its surrendering of Soviet era nuclear weapons.
The US giving $5 billion to opposition to the elected government, and possibly military training/aid, which armed opposition then violently overthrew the elected government, arguably voided the Budapest protocol.
Overthrowing a nation's freely elected government is a violation of that nation's sovereignty.
The words in you post do not add up to anything intelligible. Are you upset the Gravity didn't win?
You can't really say it was a freely elected government. Just look at how Yanukovych ran home to Daddy (Putin) when he got in trouble...he couldn't even speak Ukrainian properly. He was the butt of many political jokes across Ukraine...he was basically their George Bush. He was installed by Russia...so while I hate the West's involvement in this, Putin's is actually more eggregious. Russia has no right to invade. This is an invasion and I hope the Ukrainian's kick their asses out.
My hope is that despite all the manipulation from the West and Russia, that somehow the Ukrainian people can throw off everyone and come out of this with a government of their own.
ah yes, the usual sour grapes and cries of fraud when the West's puppets don't get in, as happened in the 2010 Ukrainian elections. That's why they had to have their coup this time, they couldn't trust the Ukrainian people to vote in the "wrong" guy again.
Interesting quote at the time from the hardly pro-Kremlin OSCE: "Yesterday's vote was an impressive display of democratic elections. For everyone in Ukraine, this election was a victory,".
Now there's something I never would have known unless I came to the Zerohedge comments section: only Western elections are rigged, Stalin's famous quip notwithstanding. Everyone else is duly elected, free and fair, unDiebolded and legitimate. There's hope after all.
Oh, and I'd like to see that $5 billion voucher of which you speak, and if possible, get a sample of the nano-loondust the folks in Langley or Foggy Bottom or Ft. Mead used to prompt Ukrainians to do something they would never have done without uber clever external puppet masters. One really does walk away from Zerohedge Comments feeling sorry for the completely outmatched 7 billion humans who are so easily and eternally manipulated by America's Alphabet Warriors using the Fed's fresh fiat, which apparently---and contrary to popular opinion here---has enormous value. I wonder if Darwin wrote about the evolutionary offshoot that produced these obviously superior beings, who orchestrate everything from Tahrir Square to the Senkaku Islands, in newly emerged nations to 5000-year old cultures? Lo that if some mere human anywhere was capable of an original thought, and didn't have to rely on Langley et al to know what to think or desire!
Why not 'sell' Crimea back to Russia in the same way Russia sold Alaska to the US. Its a territory Kiev cannot govern without Russian consent and is majority Russia (I'll ignore the historical reasons as to how that took place). The EU/US interest in this is to preserve Ukrainian independence so as to not allow Putin to reconstitute the USSR with the U standing for Ukraine.
The problem is that Ukraine gained its independence too easily as it just fell on its lap when USSR broke apart in 1991. It is only with the current bloody uprisal that the nation finally pulling itself together probably for the first time in four hundred years. In this sense loosing Crimea along with any illusions would actually be a good thing for the rest of the country.
I'd say that Crimea and the Russian force has done just that. I truly hope that there is no more blood shed and this works out. I think the West getting Ukraine proper and Russia getting Crimea would be a fair split. It'll be interesting to see if Russia tries to roll to the front yard of Kiev.
Russia may as well try. It will get very nasty indeed as people in Ukraine are genuinely angry and ready to fight. Consider long lines of volunteers in front of district military office trying to sign up for military service as seen today in Dnipropetrivsk (large city to the south east - alleged Russian stronghold).

Budapest protocol doesn't have the force of law as it was not ratified by the Senate.
Other parties violated it first by economic subversion.
Your words seem more academic and scripted than what a "Ukrainian" would post which makes this claim seem to be disingenuous.
Well, thank you. Obviously it was a great delight to pass the Homo Erectus stage and what a pleasure it is to use a stick to dig out those tasty ants.
The Russians have their fleet in Sevastopol. Seems like a poor place for naval vessels, having to force the straits of Hercules to get into the med, then run the Suez or Gibraltar to get to the atlantic or IO.
Unless the russians have some secret, the black sea fleet is not geo-strategic.
Obviously you don't understand what Israel and its Bolshevik Zionist "neocons" are desperately trying to capture; the heart of Middle East Resources, for it is here, that in today's terms and circumstances, controls the WORLD. The Ukraine is the KEY as it castrates Russia and China.
Russia is fighting for the Free World.
The USA is fighting for Israel.
While Israel fights for Lenin's and Trotsky's wet-dreams of Global Totalitarianism which they called (after Marx) Global Communism.
But more to the point, these Bolshevik Trotskyites, want to rule over mankind to perform the greatest BLOOD Sacrifice the planet has even experience - and we have experienced many. Read your History. It is all about ruling. Stalin had an ice-pick placed in Trotsky's head because Trotsky wanted to rule. Stalin ended the argument.
Why Do the Khazars want Israel? Israel is the centre of known Planetary resources. A Rouge Nation with unlimited nuclear weapons, full control over the US Military; Yes, Israel is close to Ruling the World and the World President will arrive in Washington DC in a few days to issue his Instructions to the Israeli Colony of USA.
The Key is the Ukraine.
Ho hum
It is imperative that the few free-thinking men and women left understand what is comes down to and resist.
The common folk in the US will regret their willful blindness to the fifth column occupation when their zio-overlords brings the holomodor home.
Not to nitpick, but I think the "gates of Hercules" are Gibraltar, and not the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles.....

How much do you think we could get renting Texas to Mexico?
Completely off topic but you rarely get really solid information. I just did so I'll pass it along.
Tim Cook of Apple is an idiot.
Real scientist don't talk about 'deniers'. They argue about the meaning of information. They argue about the reliabilty of data. They question methods.
Only Al Gore and (I hate to pick on a religion like this but) other Holy Climatologist speak of heresy. Normal people tend to be rational.
Whether there is climate change, whether it is caused by the sun. whether carbon in the atmosphere is a primary or secondary issue is something normal people can discuss.
The head of the largest tech company in the world is a zealot...and in a league with Al Gore. That should frighten shareholders. As a 30 year Apple user it worries me.
...back to the end of the world via the Ukraine...
If you read Isaacson's superb biography of Jobs, you are forced to conclude that Apple was Jobs.
Cook makes the trains run on time.
"What'd he say? What'd he say?"
This article is largely uninteligible babble.
No it is not, though I suppose a person both geographically and historically challenged would have great difficulty understanding ... but that's not the fault of the author.
If I sat down and read a text on any subject I had no prior knowkedge of, I would either give up or do some background rresearch ... not shoot my mouth off in ZH and prove that I was irremedially ignorant.
When one had to take a trip to the local library for reference books - and had to know about card indexes, etc. then there was at least an excuse for not bothering, but there is no excuse now that we have Google, Wikipedia, etc. just a few key-strokes away.
Get off your butt and cease expecting to be spoon-fed, if you don't already know about Imperial Russia and Crimea, or how Califotnia was settled ... and what about Hawaii and Pearl Harbour (another US Navy warm water port). Do you know how Hawaii was annexed? Or what about Alaska, because that brings things back around to a Russian connection.
Even Washington State and Oregon were Russian Territory at one time...along with Alaska.
Russian territory extended down to the Russian River just north of San Francisco. The Russian River starts in Mendocino County and flows through Sonoma County until it empties into the Pacific.
The river takes its current name from the Russian Ivan Aleksandrovich Kuskov of the Russian-American Company who explored the river in the early 19th century, and established the Fort Ross colony 10 mi (16 km) northwest of its mouth. They called it the Slavyanka River (????????), meaning "Slav River".[1] The Russians established three ranches near Fort Ross, one of which – the Kostromitinov Ranch – was along the Russian River near the mouth of Willow Creek.[13] The redwoods that lined its banks drew loggers to the river in the late 19th century.

I second the "lets butt out" motion. Do we have a third?
It is not our affair. I will give that a "Third".
Most people in the US have a very poor appreciation of the depth and breadth of nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe.
In Budapest in 1990, I recall an educated university graduate reciting lists of events dating as far back as the twelth century to substantiate the acrimony that exists between his nation and the ethnic people in modern day Romania. A man digging a trench to lay pipe nearby stopped his work to correct him on a specific date of a specific battle over 500 years ago, then resumed his work.
When history permeates DNA there is little hope for anything other than repetition of the past.
Damn. OK I'm impressed.

Thank the 'what about the children' unions who stuff their pockets and line up the stupid brigade of teachers to 'teach' the youth of America. They have stolen an entire generations education, all in order to line their own pockets with tax dollars all the while screaming 'what about the children!', they could give a shit.
from my buddy on FB:
As a former citizen of the Crimean REPUBLIC I can attest that nobody there wants to be part of Ukraine. Crimea was symbolically labeled "Ukraine" due to political shortsightedness back while the Soviet Union existed (ironically or not by a drunk at themoment politician with a Ukranian wife). Obviously without the intent that it ever actually become part of it. The vast majority are Russian speakers and identify with Russia for obvious reasons. The younger population can speak Ukrainian but only does so in and as a result of school where it is mandatory. The region has historically been a pristine resort and vacation area, with most presidents and everyone else who could, owning a summer "dacha" there. Since the default takeover by Ukraine after the fall of the Soviet Union, the area has gone to shambles. No repairs, much less investments to any infrastructure have been since. Ukraine simply abuses the region, funnels the taxes and Russian payments for its "use" of Sevastopol back to Kiev. This is their only chance to improve their quality of life in the immediate foreseeable future, and I wish them all the luck. Moreover anybody that claims otherwise has no knowledge on the subject and as a result is an ignorant idiot who should simply stfu. The End.

Inevitably all these red lines turn into rivers of ordinary people's blood.
And do the ordinary people on either side of the conflict gain anything?
Of course not.
Sacrifices are for one part of the population and rewards are for another.
Let's hope that discretion will prove to be he better part of valour.
Ordinary people do not need war regardless of who they are and where they are. They just need peace, a job, a roof over their head, the freedom to worship as they wish, schooling for their kids, a decent system of health and a real system of saving for retirement. Everything else is either commentary or just profit for the 1%.

Bravery of being out of range? Any alternative provided by Americans short of fighting alone against the Russians will be rightfully dismissed as being out of touch. American solutions to European problems means more wealth transfers from the U.S. to Europe.

This is great for the price of gold.
I like and fully support gold as a means of exchange and storing value but I dread the thought of wild events which might raise its price but which would also make our lives far more expendable.
Wow ... this is certainly a good time to cut our military to the lowest level since 1939.
I agree. We should cut it more. Cut the banker subsidies also. That should balance the budget. Reclaim the bankster profits they stoled from American citizens - that should replace the need for any income taxes for the next 50 years. Feed the banksters to the lions in modern gladiator games on pay for view TV -that will replace the need for most state and local taxes.
"Epitoma Rei Militaris" If you want peace, prepare for war.
While we are at it, I want Sheriff Taylor and Deputy Fife back. Not the increasingly militarized PoPos with SWAT teams, sniper teams, and armored vehicles.
Any time is a good time for that; if George Washington is the father of your country, why not try listen to him for once. What he encouraged you to do was a general principle; it applies today as much, or more, than when he reccomended it to you.
So cut our military - sort of like what Putin is doing.
none of our business, pull our forces from our 100's of bases across the world, and secure our own borders and bring our jobs and manufacturing home- USA needs no other country, we are the biggest market, we have our own energy, what we do not have are leaders who are patriots and nationalists, we in usa have one major problem our Leadership in all areas are demigods and NWO puppets.

re Worse still, how long can America survive the screeching sanctimony and mindless meddling of Susan Rice and Samantha Power?
Well said. Throw that foul-mouth Victoria Nuland in there as well.
Promoting these clueless bimbos, these shameless harridans, these pain-in-the-ass dumb broads - all proteges of Hillarhoid - to positions of authority where they can spew their sanctimonious, scripted, vacuous vitriol is fooling no one.
Just makes USSA even more of a laughing stock - if that were possible...
Another 'american' article.
After thieving all the land from the Indians, US Americans quickly found out they would need new streams of resources to better or simply maintain their life style.
'American' societies are global in the way they rely on the global resources in the world to maintain themselves.
As stated many times, globalization is ending, the entire world is nearing full capture by 'americans' who own or control everything.
The few places of expansion are to be found in central Asia as the result of the existence of USSR.
Big poppa commie failed to consume all the resources entrenched in the USSR perimeter as fast as 'americans' would but in the doing, also protected the region from an 'american' consumption rate.
So the only places for 'american' expansions are located in central Asia. For 'americans', it matters most to subdue all the other regional players in order to ensure an 'american' control over the resources flow in that area.
.
That observation converges to a credible notion. The resources are the mattering bits of the current phenomenum.
This area will be the focalized point of future blobbing up. It is a consequence possessing obviousness.
A prediction: propagandists will sell pulsions to blob in this regions as somehow plentifully benefitial to humanity. Such laudatings examplify the foundamentally duplicious nature of the resources thieving schemes.
curiouser and curiouser. greenwald's new boss is neck deep in the ukraine supporting the anti russian coup. greenwald just had his cover blown, along with huffnpuffers and a few other faux independent media characters.

Not to be a chauvinist dick swinger but in this time of unquestioned administrative incompetency and unrivaled douchery has there ever been this many US ambassadors, high level state Dept staff, and cabinet members who all happened to be female?
Uh, 40% of State is made up of our Afro-Brothers and Sisters.
Now don't go off. If they make up 12% of the population, I would think 15-20% would be more than fair. Which means other ethnic groups in the US are not represented, nor are their views.
unless you are a communist none of our views are represented by this administration
Its not the tits, the color of the skin or any of that other crap, it is the color of your beliefs and in this case ithe current administration is rife with the belief in the color red, communist red.
This is what the left does - Putin a leftist, 0bama a leftist.
So a great piece of intel!
I did not know Vlad had a portrait of Nicholas.
Adolf Hitler kept a portrait of Frederick the Great in every office- even the Fuhrerbunker.
Guys like that take no crap off anyone. Stay away! It's a frigging piece of Russia!
And, yes the USA did annex CA once the advantages were obvious. Historical mandate. What's good for Uncle Scam is good for Ivan.
Tsar Nicholas was murdered by the psycopathic Jewish Bolsheviks, alongside his wife and children.
Russians have very long memories.
The lengthy phone conversation Obama-Putin makes clear that neither leader has any insight or strength over the events in Crimena, or what they portend for the EU and the Middle east. This may be the start of a major worldwide realignment.
There is no EU "power" aside from NATO which is another word for US power (the only flexible power in the Med is the Sixth Fleet). The whole threater along the Russian boarder south to China is very fluid. This Ukraine dispute will possibly be the cause that will trigger other events in Iran, Syria and maybe Egypt. While the two sides, Russia and US, haggle over Ukraine's alightment a vast realignment from Ukraine to the Red Sea may be taking place by default. Neither side has the capacity (read leadership in the US) to make unilateral decisions, nor enforce them. This standoff could draw China into the game of musical chairs: it craves markets south of China to Africa. North Korea has signaled that it wants to assume a role in affairs as a it demostrates its power to affect US behavior in the Pacific. Be prepared for a major realignment in power, trade and politics in the Pacific if the US is tied up elsewhere. Now is the hour for the US to talk, but avoid armed entanglements in any of the two Major areas. The US position/ capacity will be an important unknown, but only for a brief period. Few trust Obama's motives or resolve. The US President is a loose cannon in world affairs. Miscalculations could lead the USA into a two ocean armed standoff.
What an absolute gem……………………!!!.
Today
Kerry tells Russia 'you don't invade a country on completely phony pretexts
these politicians shouldn't be movie stars, that's for sure because when they get to the final act they would have clean forgot what was said in act 1 scene 4
Goin' Full Retard. You never go Full Retard.
Kinda of harsh comparing Kerry to retarded people, harsh to retarded people.
The quid pro quo that handed Crimean sovereignty to Ukraine was that Ukraine give up its nuclear weapons. If Ukraine had nuclear weapons today, it is unlikely Russian troops would be in, and on the border of, Crimea.
That fact will not be lost on former East Bloc states such as Poland, nor perhaps in Finland, and LLE.
Elsewhere, as of this writing the ruble is off 1% plus and the MICEX down nearly 9%.
Oh, sober up; they're not going to invade Poland. The Ukraine has shot itself in the foot already by their dalliance with the Euro/ Dollar masters of the universe; their economy has become an empty shell, and 35% of their farm land belongs to foreign corporations; if Putin just makes some accurate accountings and explanations to them I think it'll go a long ways to twards calming things down. They need to remember that it wasn't russia that put them in the position they're in now, economically, it was "Capitalists are us"; and all Putin is doing is giving them a chance to avoid the final killing blows from the IMF. Naturally, this is making Christine LaGarde and the vartious super bankers foam at the mouth; but fuck them.
If Putin can say he fears that ethnic Ukrainians pose a threat to Mother Russians, it is reasonable to assume history---both Polish history and Russian history since the time of Peter the Great---might suggest to the Poles that some sort of precautions be taken against what they see as aggressive neighbors. Note Polish troop movements in the last few days. What you think, and what the Polish leadership and people might think, are not necessarily the same thing.
It was a greedy communist thug who was stealing the citizens tax dollars that put them in their current economic situation.
Currency Wars: The Yuan's Silent Scream - Portrait Of A Derivatives Bomb Being Detonated
David Kranzler published a very interesting article confirming our discussion about the ongoing Financial War involving USA, Russia and China now. Bo Polny on the chart above presents his view about the implications of US Dollar crash below 80.00 level for the Gold market and you can find our thoughts on the links below.http://sufiy.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/currency-wars-yuans-silent-scream.ht...
isn't there a bunch of soviet era nuclear what not
missing in that general area of the world
"the mouse that roared"
Cathy was a huge fat bitch anyway. I like my girls on the slender side and I could get more of them. I think not though. One woman is more than enough. I have to smile at the Tyler who wrote the post.:-)
Imagine during their long phone conversation Vlad rolls out the question"Mr President,is the Ukraine worth WWIII to you? And while O'B hubbahubbahubbas Vlad answers his own question with "well it is to me", maybe it's a bluff, maybe not.
Anyway, there'sa new sheriff in town and we need to decide where our real red line is vis a vis Greater Russia. If he rolls tanks into another country with a Russian speaking minority that happens to be a NATO member then we better be ready to fold NATO if we don't go to the mat for Estonia or Poland.
In solidarity, I have given up buying chicken kiev's, wodka and caviar.
Fortunately, someone explained to me what Caviar was before I actually ate any; so I never did; and never will. I'm a basic meat and potatoes kind of guy, I'm afraid; fish eggs, not so much.
If war is happening it was decided a long time ago.
Who is the lie box saying is the current bad guy?
Sometimes I wonder if all the screeching and yammering inside the beltway isn't just to distract the TV audience from the long list of malfeasance and treason against the Constitution already accomplished by this "administration" ?
Dude. Seriously.
That's been going on since about 1865.
Crimea looks like Sudetenland Mk II to me, and Ukraine a "far-away country of which we know little". Like the dictators of the 1930s, Putin will get ever stronger until appeasement stops.
As a minimum, we need to freeze all Russian assets - state, corporate and private - until all Soviet (sorry, Russian) forces are withdrawn from Ukraine.
We should also consider accelerated NATO membership for Ukraine.
Throwing gas on a fire when the extinguisher is empty. The West (EuroLand and USSA) doesn't have the $ to start a pissing contest with Vlad, The West is the UK post WWll flat broke and losing the Empire.
'We should also consider accelerated NATO membership for Ukraine.'
Because membership is so much better than all the promises NATO has already made to the Ukraine.
Who is "we" you Zionist fuck?
Good idea.
"We" could use the resources of another NATO member state to assist in bombing women and children in non-NATO countries that get in "our" way.
Our ass clown and his minions play golf as the world burns. What a complete fuck up. If obama wasn't such an arrogant clueless leader i'd feel embarrassed for him. Sending Heniz ketchup Kerry to talk to Putin is just laughable. Up to this point we have let these complete fools destroy our economy with their social experiments. Now it may get serious, we may lose our security as these buffoons fail to in any way shape or form comprehend our security concerns in the area and attempt to govern by press release.
P.S Note to Tim Cook. I'll buy your damn stock anytime I want and if you or your flaky California friends don't like it you can kiss my arse.
Reading the teaser blub on the front page, I thought it was Pat Buchanan.
David Stockman sure has gained some wisdom in his old age. For example, see his blog article headlined "Q&A: David A. Stockman says tax the rich and hogtie the Fed". No more trickling for Mr. Stockman, apparently.
BTW, the "Ethno Linguistic Map" in this ZH article is a real laugher: Open it up any way you want, and it's still tiny. If you want to actually view the Map's content, try http://davidstockmanscontracorner.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Ethnoli... .
Are you conflating Arthur Laffer with David Stockman?
What we need is that next giant technological leap in energy that will make all this type of expansionism no longer worth the risk.
How much 'science' education have you had?

Just curious, does this mean any medals won by Ukrainians in the olympics are now counted towards the Russian total?
If somebody can translate from Russian, there's a very interesting speech at the European Parliament by Ukrainian President Candidate Ms. Nataliya Vitrenko
http://youtu.be/IGNi5HI4Dg4
Comparing the "ethno linguistic map" to the "outcome of the last elections 2010 and 2014 demo" map is there not good reason to consider proposing to the residents a dividing of the country along obvious lines.

If the Ukrainian people would like their freedom then the Ukraine military should not lay down their weapons. FIGHT, start dying you cowards.
Can you see the day when unmarked military personnel surround Camp Pendleton and are told to lay down.
We can't give people freedom, it must be bought at the cost of their blood.
I wonder how many of Ukraine's 4100 main battle tanks are operational??? Would love to see a smaller version of Kursk play-out. Too bad Ukraine doesn't have a couple of A-10 Warthog squadrons. Russia might just get its ass kicked. Go ask Finland how it's done.....
