Ukraine's New Navy Head Denis Berezovsky Defects After Just One Day On The Post

Tyler Durden's picture

Overnight, there had been numerous rumors that the newly appointed chief of the Ukraine navy, who was just made head of the navy on Saturday, had defected to the Crimean people explicitly, and to pro-Russian forced in the region implicitly. The sourcing of most were various Russian outlets so we discounted these until we got confirmation from a "western" source. The BBC did just that moments ago.

New head of Ukraine's navy 'defects' in Crimea

The newly appointed head of Ukraine's navy has sworn allegiance to the Crimea region, in the presence of its unrecognised pro-Russian leader.

Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky was only made head of the navy on Saturday, as the government in Kiev reacted to the threat of Russian invasion.

Russia's troops have been consolidating their hold on Crimea, which is home to its Black Sea Fleet.

The moment of defection allegedly caught on digital media:

The move is not entirely unexpected: while the US may not have many issues with facing the Russian navy head on as it did last summer in the Mediterranean over Syria, others are not quite as excited with being on the receiving end of the Russian military juggernaut.

So if this has been confirmed, the rest of the news reported earlier by RIA is also true. To wit:

Ukraine’s autonomous region of Crimea confirmed Sunday that the majority of Ukrainian military units stationed on the Crimean peninsula have expressed their support of legitimately elected Pro-Russian authorities.

Earlier reports by Russian media about peaceful takeover of the military units by forces loyal to the Crimean government were denied by the Ukrainian defense ministry.

However, Crimean authorities said that most of the Ukrainian units sided on Sunday with pro-Russian forces “without a single shot fired,” and warned the commanders of a few units that remain loyal to Kiev that they would face criminal action if refused to surrender.

“I would like to warn commanders who force their subordinates to commit illegal actions that they will be punished according to existing laws,” Crimea’s Prime Minister Sergei Aksenov said in a statement.

The Crimean government said earlier that some 10 warships from the Ukrainian navy left their naval base in Sevastopol apparently on orders from Kiev.

Crimea is now at the center of the ongoing crisis in the country as pro-Russia groups move to distance themselves from a reformed national parliament that ousted President Viktor Yanukovych a week ago.

The map below is said to summarize all the Ukraine cities where the Russian flag has already been hoisted.

If anything, these bloodless victories will only embolden Russia to press on: hardly the resolution the west would like. Perhaps that explains why early unofficial quotes of the Russian Ruble see the currency dropping as much as 10%.

Speaking of sources... a lot of people have made claims that this whole Ukraine situation is due to CIA/western bankers/NGOs etc trying to over throw the government. While I don't doubt that, I haven't seen much in the way of facts around that. Does any one have any good links to show some proof of these claims? Or is it all speculation?

Cannon, i wish you're true and not playing the dumb game here... anyhow here's some of the info

From observer007's given link about the leaked email, i represent it here as Klitschko's story is tightly knitted to Nuland's "Fuck the EU" saga!

Ukraine: Anonymous Publishes Klitschko Emails

http://homment.com/ukraine-klitschko

Read the email leak along with below information on Nuland's famous line "Fuck the EU", one should be able to understand how the Russian feels today...

US-EU Clash on How to Install a Puppet Regime in Ukraine. Victoria Nuland | Global Research

Yesterday’s leak of the flagrant telephone talk between the US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt has already hit the international media headlines. In short, it turned out that the US officials were coordinating their actions on how to install a puppet government in Ukraine. They agreed to nominate Bat’kyvshchina Party leader Arseniy Yatseniuk as Deputy Prime Minister, to bench Udar Party leader Vitaly Klitschko off the game for a while and to discredit neo-Nazi Svoboda party chief Oleh Tiahnybok as “Yanukovych’s project”. Then Mrs. Nuland informed the US Ambassador that the Washington’s hand by the UN Secretary General, Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Jeffrey  Feltman had already instructed Ban Ki-moon to send his special envoy to Kyiv this week “to glue the things”. Touching the European role in managing Ukraine’s political crisis, she was matchlessly elegant: “Fuck the EU”.

In a short while, after nervious attempts to blame Russians in fabricating (!) the tape (State Department: “this is a new low in Russian tradecraft”), Mrs. Nuland brought her apologies to the EU officialsDoes it mean that the Washington’s repeatedly leaked genuine attitude towards the “strategic Transatlantic partnership” is much worthy of apology than the direct and clear interference into the internal affairs of a sovereign state and violation of the US-Russia-UK agreement (1994 Budapest memorandum) on security assurances for Ukraine?  Meanwhile this document inter alia reads as follows:

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the CSCE Final Act, to respect the Independence and Sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine.

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, and that none of their weapons will ever be used against Ukraine except in self-defense or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

The United States of America, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the CSCE Final Act, to refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by Ukraine of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.

Back to the latest Mrs. Nuland’s diplomatic collapse made public,  it is hardly an unwilling and regretful fault. Andrey Akulov from Strategic Culture Foundation has published a brilliant report (Bride at every weddingPart I and Part II) a couple of days ago depicting a blatant lack of professionalism and personal intergity of Mrs. Nuland. He described in details her involvement in misinforming the US President and nation on the circumstances of the assasination of the US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens in Benghazi in September 2012 and her support of the unlawful US funding of a number of the Russian “independent” NGOs seeking to bring a color revolution to Russia.

Her diplomatically unacceptable behavior on the Ukrainian track, which culminated on YouTube this week (video and full transcript are available below), suggests that Mrs. Nuland is perhaps a wrong person in a wrong position for protecting American interests in Eurasia.

Just read the rhetoric above.

A group of thugs took control if the parliament building in Kiev and was immediately supported by the West/EU/NATO/US. The thugs took over the government, kicked out the president, installed their own guy, banned use of Russian as a language, and pledged their intent to join the EU. Now the banking system is melting down and the military is saying they will only support the legitimately elected government, not the small group that took the parliament building in Kiev.

These are all facts. No one's going to write a definitive article connecting dots for you. That's why you act through agents: you have plausible deniability.

Tell you what. If VP and Russia can effectively "win" this war without any real conflict, fighting, deaths, etc., but rather by strategic positioning, control, and planning, then we may be witnessing the major event that shifts power (i.e., military, economic, political, social, etc.) from the West to the East. From reading numerous articles and watching the events unfold, it would appear that Russia has effective control over Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. And let's face it, this isn't something that just "happened" to happen over the past week or so. The planning and forward thinking that most likely went into this effort (by Russia) indicates that they have run through numerous scearios and options for months if not years leading up to this event. I suspect they knew it was coming all along and were well ahead of the West on the strategic thinking side as to how to manage the sitution with as little real damage as possible.

Right now, it appears Russia has thought this through at a strategic level and basically knew well in advance how the West would react. VP may have his issues but he also appears to be a very sharp and calculating individual that understands long-term thinking. This, I believe, underscores a major difference in thinking between the East and West. Whereby the East is focused on long-term goals and objectives (e.g., China positioning itself in Africa and other resource rich countries), the West is more focused on the "here and now" and the need for immediate satisfaction. No wonder why Europe and the US are buried in debt (at the soverign level) as when in doubt, borrow to keep the mirage alive.

What I find so hard to believe is the bungling by the western operatives. Leaked phone conversations on unsecured lines, emails to various parties with western interests. At some point the whole espionage system will have to be revamped a lot of people should be fired. By the posts on these boards it seems nobody sides with the western spin. It is all transparent. In the end the dolts in the CIA and state department must really believe in their infallibility. They have never been matched to their equal as they are know. The people see through the war and corptocracy thing, do not like it, do not support it as it has disenfranchised them.

The Ukrainians leading their revolution are their own worst enemy. Their problem is hatred for what Stalin did in the 1920's, starving 15 million Ukrainians to death. But the Russia they hate no longer exists.

Their priority should be the independence of Ukraine. Instead, driven by their hatred, they will throw off one set of chains to put on another set of chains courtesy of the EU which is under the control of the marxists, socialists, and communists control freaks in Brussels.

They have set the trap that they are walking into.

the gulags were just prison camps for slave labor that provided the same function of producing foodstuff, and materials, etc, for the red army. they to had starved millions to death.

Tyler, once again, if you are aiming to be the "Truth Teller" (which I strongly believe you are!), please, watch the language you are using... The Headline "Ukraine's New Navy Head Denis Berezovsky Defects After Just One Day On The Post" is something whores like CNN, FOX, or CNBC use, but such a Headline is not commendable on a Free Blog like ZH.

The factual problem with such a Headline is that (a) the nomination of Denis Berezovsky to the position of Navy Chief was legal -- it was not, it was done by a usurping Gang Leader in Kiev, hence Denis's "defecting the next day" is simply an act of acknowledging by an honest man that he did not want to represent the interests of the Kiev Junta and their US / Polish / German puppet-masters, and (b) "Defecting" implies defecting to an enemy -- are you suggesting that Denis's pledging his allegiance to the People of Crimea is the same as "defecting to an enemy"? Use your head, think about it, and try to come up with better, less reputation damaging, Headlines, will ya?!
