US Official Claims 6,000 Russian Troops In Complete Control Of Crimea - Crisis Map Update

Tyler Durden's picture

While the images and local news have been suggesting that Russia is in control on the Crimean peninsula, US officials (according to Bloomberg) have confirmed this:

  • *RUSSIAN FORCES IN COMPLETE CONTROL OF CRIMEA: U.S. OFFICIAL
  • *RUSSIA HAS 6,000 TROOPS IN CRIMEA, U.S. OFFICIAL SAYS
  • *KERRY TO REAFFIRM SUPPORT FOR UKRANIAN SOVEREIGNITY, PSAKI SAYS

Obama, Merkel, and Cameron are now on a conference call to discuss this "fact" and officials have just reported that US Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Kiev tomorrow (though we suspect not Sevastopol):

  • U.S. IS FOCUSED ON ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND DIPLOMATIC OPTIONS ON UKRAINE, NOT ON ANY POSSIBLE U.S. MILITARY INTERVENTION, U.S. OFFICIAL SAYS
  • *U.S. CONSIDERING SANCTIONS ON RUSSIAN BANKS, OFFICIAL SAYS

Iraq was a far worse intervention, with all the violence and a Hollywood justification to hide the jackboot of the petrodollar.  Putin may have justifications (just as we did) for going in, but when he did it he did it without a shot being fired.  Now, if America had the exact same situation, do you think we would have done as well?  Putin has much more reasonable justifications - as nonlinear as they are.

If the western Ukraine people want to know what comes next, all they need do is grab a history book, and read about what happened to Poland aftr WW2. The west turned their back on Poland and they will do likewise with the Ukraine. Seriously, what do you expect from these three sissies? Merkel suffers from the guilt complex that most germans suffer from, Obama and his wrecking crew are complete amatuers when it comes to dealing with strong men {Putin} with a military to match, and Cameron will go along with whatever the other two decide. Putin knows who is behind all of this. I hope he expels all of the"Foundations", and sends their staffs off to the gulags for crimes against the state.

Putin believes in Russia.  None of the other three believe in their own countries.  They are just politicians on the make, who think their countries, and others, are there to be exploited.

Not saying Putin is a saint.  But like the Chinese leaders, he is a patriot.  The US doesn't have patriots heading its government, not does the UK or most European nations.

Patriot?  Putin would steal hand over fist (and he already has from most reports) from the Russian people and is willing to let most of the country and the Russian citizens who live there slowly wither way.

The only difference between Putin and the worst of the West is that Putin wants only his ilk & countryman's power brokers to rob and loot as he pleases and a not repeat of what happend in the 90s.

This idea that Putin is some kind of heroic figure on ZH and not just yet another Russian strongman who is willing to grind his own people as much as necessary and steal from them (as long as it is Russians) baffles me.

In case you've forgotten: America has the worlds largest prison system, overtly tortures people, has a national police state that wants to be global, and is seemingly bombing or destabilizing every country that it doesn't have bases in.  Putin is telling them to go pound sand.   This is entertaining to many people who aren't on the MIC & NSA payroll.

We have a 100 acre farm in Washington free and clear my husband will inherit if all goes right. If not, we have a spot in Colorado near Durango. Right now with my income it doesn't make sense to leave yet but that may change. The real trick is not to stay too long and try to leave when it's too late. Like Jews in Germany in the 1930s... Agreed.  Gerrymandering has been the scourge in CA that has reduced the democratic process / republic based constituency to irrelevance and should be the first item on the agenda to prohibit in any future alterations to a legitimate representative governing system.

As for the situation in the Borderlands, the US' involvement in providing assistance to the "moderates" has been woefully ill advised.  While I support Ukrainian sovereignty, the absence of an adequate consideration of "right-wing" armed westerners bullying the moderates in Kiev and declaring for all intents and purposes death to fellow citizens of their country / territories in the east and south show the stupidity of the US' DC administration.  What a bunch of dopes.  Way to go idiots!

That's the rub in all this then isn't it? At what point does one stop reenforcing (by continued participation) the perceived legitimacy of a broken and corrupt system and walk away from it, as painful as that might be?

This is a fundamental question that I think each individual needs to ask themselves and often.

I do not like my participation in this farce of which I did not create. However, it seems the world is descending into the abyss of corruption, destruction and brutal control. Many are military and this is one group that is good to have your back. All doesn't look totally hopeless where I stand and I hope I have made the right decision. Only time will tell. I guess I get a little testy when I see people lump all of Cali as a bag of total idiots. I understand why they think so if they view only the MSM.

Pretty sure I pissed you off by mentioning lab rats. I once ran a lab.  It was not microbiology, but materials testing.  Same shit, same methodology.  Subject is rigorously examined via established protocol.  It is further isolated and examined if it exhibits any deviation whatsoever from established norms.

Not so different from global geo-politics when you think about it, is it?

My dear ace, how could you piss me off with that? I AM a lab rat. Today I was running full tilt on my wheel trying to appease Drs, nurses, managers and government. It takes all my will not to say " Screw you guys, I'm going home" because I am,unfortunately, a very obstreperous lab rat that really is a lone wolf. My problem is I think too much and want to twink the protocols and standards when I see how they could be improved. Also, I take great umbrage when a damn government PhDs tells me how to do my job when they have never done my work and come from strictly academia. But, Mr has stressed he will accept no more jobs lost due to my defiant nature so here I am, smiling, nodding and trying not to bite my lip bloody. Nations as well as microbiologists do wish they can comfortably fly under the radar.

I am glad you won't judge me by my location and I certainly won't do such to anyone, having received a lot of prejudice from others here.I'm proof some of us crazy Cali's can be quite sane. I probably won't respond except in evenings or weekends and I have gotten quite behind in my correspondences just due to time restraints though I've had some wonderful interactions with a few here. Don't worry. Mr knows I do have some on line friendships though he tends to be bit protective of me.

I've, through my own stupidity, have gotten myself into some interesting and entertaining situations. He certainly can review my emails whenever he wishes but he respects my privacy. Though I admit I don't know the STD statistics in the Ukraine, let me say as a clinical microbiologist I have never seen the rates of STDs in the USA so high. The number of Chlamydia and GC cases I diagnose daily now is staggering. Same for Hep C. This is now epidemic in the USA , especially for the 55-65 yr crowd. Drug resistance is skyrocketing. There are some great new therapies for Hep C now but how long with wide use before they become useless. Trust me,your dick is not safe anywhere now unless in a committed monogamous relationship. I can only hope that the Russians keep playing it smart when it comes to the Ukrainian bases, and do what the Slovenians did to the lone Serb garrison in Ljubljana, during their War of Independence in 1991: Cut of all utilities.

Cut off all utilities (water, sewers, electricity, phones and Russian gas).  Then invite them to stay, join or leave, with their arms left behind.  Officers may hand over their personal sidearms in person.  BTW, no Sat-phone uplinks either - due to EM jamming -- to allow them to make up their own mind.

No doubt the Russians have never forgotten:

The Turkish/Ottoman move up the Danube River was also of concern to the Austrians, who moved forces into Transylvania in response. However, the Austrians had begun to fear the Russians more than the Turks. Indeed, like the British, the Austrians were now coming to see that an intact Ottoman Empire was necessary as a bulwark against the Russians. Accordingly, the Austrians resisted Russian diplomatic attempts to join the war on the Russian side. Austria remained neutral in the Crimean War.

In June the fleets transported the Allied expeditionary forces to Varna, in support of the Ottoman operations on the Danube; in September they again transported the armies, this time to the Crimea. The Russian fleet during this time declined to engage the allies, preferring to maintain a "fleet in being"; this strategy failed when Sevastopol, the main port and where most of the Black Sea fleet was based, came under siege. The Russians were reduced to scuttling their warships as blockships, after stripping them of their guns and men to reinforce batteries on shore. During the siege, the Russians lost four 110- or 120-gun, 3-decker ships of the line, twelve 84-gun 2-deckers and four 60-gun frigates in the Black Sea, plus a large number of smaller vessels.During the rest of the campaign the allied fleets remained in control of the Black Sea, ensuring the various fronts were kept supplied.

This is all a prearranged deal.

Russia asserts control over its Ukrainian interests and Crimea and the West gets to plunder the remaining state with debt-games.

Regardless of what happens, the natural gas still comes from Russia.

The thing that worries me is the emerging Tatar v. Slav talk.  Thank Lutz & company.

With a little luck both sides will consolidate their power over the next 3 months.  Crimea will have their NATO/UN approved referendum and Crimea will side with the Rus.

Team Yulia will get their people to hold power where they can and drink the IMF kool-aid.

Now if all the mercenaries pouring in theater start working to take out the "local" oligarchs, then it seems the Obama/Putin deal is off.

It will be interesting to watch Poland exercise their NATO frontier perception going forward.

Ukraine has a lot of smart people in it.

Ukraine was traded for Syria.  America's foreign infiltrated and controlled government is putting on a good show with speaking out against the Russians going into Ukraine, but I assure you this was not a surprise, it was coordinated.  Kerry and Putin are on Skype with each other right now raising a toast of Vodka to each other.  NWO Russia needed something for Syria.  NWO West gave them Ukraine.  Just like they are giving NWO China parts of the Pacific and Africa right now.  We will be hitting Syria very soon.  Assad will be removed by the foreign controlled American government because he won't play nice with the global central banking system.  They need complete unrest all around Zionist Israel in order to get the "peace" deal to go through with the Palestinians.  From there, Iran and from there, North Korea and then they'll pretty much have it sealed.  3 NWO powers that will eventually unite into 1.  This is why NWO Russia and NWO China have relaxed some of their economic and political policies.  This is why NWO West has de-Americanized America and has cracked down on liberty.  They are forming these governments to be more like one another so that their differences can be set aside later and they can meld into one.  At that point, kiss liberty goodbye forever.  Best behead the dragon while it is still a hatchling.

I never watch US Main Stream Media, like CNN, MSNBC and FOX, yet due to the unusual nature of this crisis, I have made it a point to tune in to CNN in particular, and sometimes the others. CNN because they really are the official state controlled media of the US Government State Department and Defense Department, what they say and report is official USG information meant to direct public opinion into the proper channels.

Watching these State Run Media sources this afternoon, I heard, via phone link up, a Democratic Congress Woman make the claim that Ukrainians living in other nations like Canada, USA, Britain, Germany, France and others should be recruited as a vanguard force to be used by the US Miltiary as their Ukrainian front groups, behind which the United States would go to war to defeat the Russian forces in Crimea, and reverse the counter revolution. She made it clear that America, that is you and I, are obligated to attack Crimea.

I thought perhaps I was hearing wrong, but I had the DVR running and went back to listen again to her rambling talk. I confirmed that she was calling for Military Mobilization of US forces needed to attack and invade Crimea to expel Russian troops. War, the word War, was used by her several times.

The Republicans, most of whom I do not know, because I don't follow US media, were heard to say that the US is obligated to go to war with Russia.  The congressmen said that the Revolutionary Government in Kiev has all the rights of a sovereign government, despite not one vote having been cast for them in any election. They also said that opposition protest movements in places like Karkov were illegal acts and the protestors should be arrested by Kiev troops. Also, one expert on Ukraine said that most Crimean people are protesting to support the Kiev revolutionary government, and that ethnic Russians in the East/South are a small minority, and by far they support the revoultionary Kiev governemnt.

They concluded that since all Ukraine stands for the revolution,  America is obligated to confront and then defeat Putin. All measures are on the table.

These people are what passes for rational American leaders. What I suspect is that this is a giant ploy, and major hoax, a cooked up event by the CIA in Urkaine to force Putin's hand in a manner that will allow the USA to declare Russia a national security threat to the USA, and restart a full on cold war, if not a shooting war. Why do this? Well, follow the money, where does it lead, where do the trillions taken from American tax payers end up if the US Congress can declare Russia a threat to the USA? I suggest as fact, fact that is confirmed by reality, that trillions will now be taken from Americans via taxation and sent to all the assortment of military weapons builders, pentagon suppliers, private military contractors, service providers and the giant corporate machine that makes all it's profits from the US taxpayer. If you hold stock in these corporations, you are holding a great long position, because profits will be epic going forward. War is good for business, war will also stip hard working taxpayers of more and more of their shrinking wages .

A revolution in Kiev that could stand as the most profitable act of the CIA in decades, profitable for the Military Industrial Complex and it's drive for corporate profits. The fact that large numbers of foreigners were fighting as shock troops of the revolution gives evidence that the CIA was fully involved in Kiev. The Orange revolution failed because they could not get and then hold the majority of votes in Ukrainian elections, thus the CIA decided a violent armed overthrow would work in this case where voters had refused to elect the CIA candidates. Should you want to argue that point, simply read the recent history of Ukrainian elections, Orange candidates won in one election, had power, stole everything, and then were defeated in what the EU and United Nations along with the Untied States all confirmed was a free, fair and open election. The CIA has a rule, if you can't win at the ballot box, get out the guns. Ask Iran, about electiing a government, CIA used guns to defeat the elected government there, as in Vietnam in the mid 60's.

Jack,

your research is sound and I respect your opinions.  But, NO ONE is going to war over a nation that owes the IMF $36 billion.  The Germans have no army what to speak ofand won't stand for a US military incursion.  Please remember that the former German Prime Minister - Schroeder is the number 2 man in Gazprom.  The Russians will turn the gas off to Western Europe if your scenario unfolds.

Everyone knows that the US destabilized the Ukranine, with $4.0 billion having been admittedly spent.  Chevron is probably guilty of multiple violations of the Foreign Corup Practices act in Eastern Europe, vis-a-vis the gas fracking leases.

The Russians will not back down.  And, our troop commanders may refuse to lead them into the Ukraine.  The US Military has been so abused that I have serious doubt that there is any resolve to fight.  And, I have a fair knowledge about that - was an Infantry Lt with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam - 1968 - 69.  Today's soldier is not as naive and stupid as we were.  But, in the end, they fight for the same two reasons - the flag and their commrads-in-arms and nothing else.

By control as I heard it on the news, the pentagon admitted that Russia held Sea, Air and Land control of Crimea. This is much different than having a large land army in Crimea. That the pentagon said was Russia has control in the sense that Russia decides what ships sail, what planes fly and who comes and goes to Crimea. They in no sense meant that Russia had occupied entire cities and towns and rural road and rail networks. The 6,000 are enough for key junctions and buildings and bases. What Pentagon was referring to was Russia has Crimean air space approaches covered by S-400, and local points covered by TOR-M2 anti aircaft missiles, and the necessary fighter jets on nearby airfields across the starights of Kerch. They also mean Russian missile equipped surface vessels along with cruise missile submarines were covering sea approaches to Crimea. And mobile shore based anti shipping missiles, along with air and sea launched anti shipping missiles covered sea approaches.

By control this is what the Pentagon meant. Larger land forces can come across the Kerch straights, or be sent to Sevastopol by sea or air transport if needed. But really, in 2014, controlling air and sea in this case is all that is needed. The land bridges to the mainland are so narrow that a few hundred men with anti tank missiles and covered by long range Iskanders inside Russia could deal with hundred of tanks and thousands of men trying to break across these tiny land bridges.

Please quote where it says we must protect Ukraine and bomb Moscow. Don't forget when using the arguement that Russia showed aggression first....Russia was protecting the already instilled government that Ukraine had prior to the revolution, which is listed in the treaty to protect Ukraines people, America is hooting for upheavel of the former Ukraine to instill a new Ukraine which goes against the treaty by causing civil unrest....whether warrented or not.

I understand people don't like what Russia is doing and the country as a whole, but learn about laws and proliferation treaties and how they have been written, deligated, and walked all over. Much as you may disagree and be pro-America to step in, America has already crossed the line and has no right to be over there causing issues.

Forgive me, I'm very new to the geopolitical game and the ZH perspective, but you guys are largely very well informed and good critical thinkers, so what are your thoughts on this theory I have put together?

Evidence:
Recently the Obama admin has been renewing some rhetoric on intervening in Syria, which was blocked last time by Russia.

Obama has been heard to tell Russia that he would be flexible after his last election.

Many people argue that the pro-western revolt in Ukraine was backed, instigated, and perhaps lead by western EU/US interests.

Despite pretty strong language from John Kerry condemning Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine, little to no meaningful words or actions have been taken by the US publicly.

The US is tied fairly strongly with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, both of whom are concerned with overthrowing the current official Syrian regime, to their economic and perhaps strategic benefit.

Victoria Nuland was recently heard saying "fuck the EU" in regard to who to support in the Ukraine opposition.

And finally, USS GHWB is entering the Mediterranean but due to treaty restrictions and tactical problems with having an aircraft carrier in the Black Sea, is unlikely to be headed for Ukraine.

So what does this all add up to in Tom Clancy (RIP) Land, where everything makes sense and is full of geopolitical intrigue?

The US has made a deal with Russia to trade the opportunity for Russia to claim the strategically important (to Russia) parts of Ukraine for the ability for the US to intervene in the strategically/economically important Syria to gain an outcome favorable to the US and its allies in the region. In the process, the EU gets screwed over by losing influence in Ukraine, and oil can flow from both Russia AND Qatar/SA into Europe. To facilitate this, the US has instigated the revolt in Ukraine in order to provide pretext for Russia to invade. USS GHWB is positioning for intervention in Syria under pretext of exacting costs from Russia for it's aggression. End result: political wins for Obama AND Putin. US gains from Syria, where Russia has little at stake, Russia gains from Ukraine, where US has little at stake, EU loses, but who cares.

Good theory, and I don't know it could be very possible, but could also be just a possible that Putin really isn't fearful of the EU/UK/USA and has strong enough ties with China/NKorea/Middle East that he is being 100% real and things could get hot between us and Russia. Unfortunately just have to wait and see what their play is on all this......my other major concern is what China is up too.

I thought this a worthwhile read. From Feb 1.

Former US ambassador to the USSR,  JackMatlock.com:

With all of the reports coming out of Ukraine, Moscow, Washington, and European capitals, the mutual accusations, the knee-jerk speculation, and—not least—the hysterical language of some observers, bordering on the apocalyptic, it is difficult to keep in mind the long-term implications of what is happening. Nevertheless, I believe that nobody can understand the likely outcomes of what is happening unless they bear in mind the historical, geographic, political and psychological factors at play in these dramatic events. The view of most of the media, whether Russian or Western, seems to be that one side or the other is going to “win” or “lose” Ukraine.

I believe that is fundamentally mistaken. If I were Ukrainian I would echo the immortal words of the late Walt Kelly’s Pogo: “We have met the enemy and he is us.” The fact is, Ukraine is a state but not yet a nation. In the 22-plus years of its independence, it has not yet found a leader who can unite its citizens in a shared concept of Ukrainian identity. Yes, Russia has interfered, but it is not Russian interference that has created Ukrainian disunity but rather the haphazard way the country was assembled from parts that were not always mutually compatible. To the flaw at the inception of an independent Ukraine, one must add the baleful effects of the Soviet Communist heritage both Russia and Ukraine have inherited.

A second mistake people make is to assume that when a given government adopts a particular policy that policy is in the true interest of that country. In fact...

Speaking of which first the head of the Navy defects now you have this.

http://rt.com/news/ukraine-navy-flaghsip-protest-389/

Ukraine’s Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has reportedly refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russia’s side and is returning home after taking part in NATO operation in the Gulf of Aden flying the Russian naval flag.

There has been conflicting information on where exactly the vessel is, but a Russian senator has confirmed to Izvestia daily that the frigate defected to the Russian side.

Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag,” Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia daily.

He said the flagship is on its way back to the Black Sea after drills in the Mediterranean. “The crew has fulfilled the order by the chief commander of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Yanukovich,” he added.

The move comes after the Navy command resigned Friday. Self-appointed President Aleksandr Turchinov made Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky the new Navy Chief, a statement published on the President’s website Saturday said.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Prime Minister of Ukraine had earlier asked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to let the frigate through the Bosporus strait, according to the Kiev Times. The ship captain and the head of Ukraine’s contingent in the operation, Rear Admiral Andrey Tarasov disobeyed orders from Kiev.

The Hetman Sahaidachny returns to Sevastopol, Crimea after taking part in a joint counter-piracy operation with NATO and the EU off the Horn of Africa, reported UNN on Friday, citing Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. On February 26, after crossing the Suez Canal, the ship entered the Mediterranean Sea and was expected to be in Sevastopol in early March.

Back in the bad old days of the Cold War, as soon as intel said the Russians were massing on the East German border, we would get orders to leave our US Base in Germany and set up in the woods.  Sounds like the Ukranians sat in their barracks and waited to be surrounded.

We would be strapping into flight gear and reviewing the latest inteligence about enemy SAM/fighter disposition. Your gear included a handgun. Aircraft moved to hard shelters or dispursed per plans. Hot loads on the wings....

These guys don't appear ready to fight.

Sovereignty means you are willing to defend yourself. If Ukraine wants to keep the Crimea they better get about kicking the Russians out. Nobody can do this for them.

God help them.

The scariest part might be that it only takes 6000 troops and a couple armoured personnel carriers to conquer such a 'strategic' area. But then again, the Crimea does not have a well regulated militia where the people have the uninfringed right to bear arms.
