Watch As A US Missile Destroyer Departs Greece For The Black Sea

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday we reported that with the US aircraft carrier, CVN-77 George H.W. Bush, anchoring in Piraeus, Greece, an unnamed US warship had been granted permission by Turkey to cross the Bosphorus and enter the Black Sea. There was speculation it may be the carrier itself, even though such a crossing would be forbidden by the Montreaux Convention. Today we have the answer: it is not CVN-77, but one of the ships from its aircraft carrier strike group - the guided-missile destroyer USS Truxton, which as the clip below shows, just departed the Greek port of Souda Bay earlier today.

From Stripes.com:

A U.S. guided-missile destroyer is bound for the Black Sea in what the Navy calls a routine visit unrelated to events in Ukraine.

The USS Truxtun, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer with about 300 sailors on board, departed Greece early Thursday, said a spokesman for U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa in Naples.

The Truxtun is part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group, which recently entered the Mediterranean and is training with regional navies before continuing to the Middle East. The group also includes Carrier Air Wing 8, the destroyer USS Roosevelt and the cruiser USS Philippine Sea.

But lest someone think that just like Russia's ICBM test coming at a most inopportune time, this move has anything to do with Ukraine tensions, the US Navy would like to frame the situation in a far more amicable manner:

The ship is scheduled to train with Romanian and Bulgarian naval forces for an unspecified period of time, conducting joint maneuvers and landing aircraft on ships. The spokesman, Lt. Shawn Eklund, said the visit is unrelated to Russia’s recent incursion into Ukraine. "Truxtun’s operations in the Black Sea were scheduled well in advance of her departure from the U.S.,” he said.

Well of course they were. But just in case not sending a missile destroyer into the Black Sea would be seen as a way to avoid escalations, it is best to make sure such confusion is avoided entirely.

For a brief glimpse of the truth behind the real purpose of this trip, we also find the destroyer will join the USS Taylor as the only two U.S. vessels inside the Black Sea during a period of heightened tensions. A a reminder, the Taylor, a guided-missile frigate, remains moored in Samsun, Turkey, after it ran aground in February - good thing it did not have to defend the "free world" from all those Sochi terrorists that America was convinced will blow everything up.

So what does a ship departing for the Black Sea for what may or may not be simple drills with friendly naval forces? The answer can be found in the clip below.

The Japanse were fairly decent at landing aircraft intentially on ship decks. But not sure they have any advisers left with the technical knowledge to share with the RomBuls.

The Russian navy sank one of its own, junked vessels to create an obstacle, a Ukrainian official said Wednesday. Ukraine Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Alexei Mazepa said Russian sailors pulled the anti-submarine vessel Ochakov out of a naval junkyard and sank it in the straits that connect the Black Sea with a body of water known as Donuzlav Lake. He said the act was intended to prevent Ukrainian navy ships from leaving a nearby base and going to sea.

ha...

next it will be "don't worry, the nuclear armed ICBM's currently descending upon the east and/or west coast are part of a military exercise that was planned long in advance as part of a "live fire" drill to test the effectiveness of anti missile defense batteries. unfortunately we do not expect those batteries to be 100% effective so we do anticipate some collateral damage to occur, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause".

one would have thought that in the interest of  avoiding even the appearance of further escalating an already tense situation, one would consider delaying such "exercises" until the situation has had the opportunity to cool down a bit. unless of course somebody is lying in regards to the point and purpose of sending the destroyer in the first place...

Although I would not like this crisis to escalate to a hot, kinetic conflict between the super powers, nor see US sailors perish, I have the clarity of mind that...

We do not have "innocent" people who were drafted, but a PROFESSIONAL military -- where they knew the risks and dangers up front, and assumed them willingly for pay. They are in fact "equivalent to Mercenaries", and unless one of them is my friend, neighbor or relative, I will not mourn them.

ps. If I use the model someone recently proposed, that there are 4 basic groups of people serving in the dangerous parts/missions of the US military, these would be:

1. Legacy & Tradition types: dad, ancestors were in the military.
2. Patriots: genuinely (if somewhat naively) believe in "Serving the country"
3. Careerists: serve because they are otherwise unemployed, under-employed, or actually see a long-term job opportunity and job security in working for the DOD (and other Gov Agencies or Departments) later on.
4. Psychos: who are itching to legally hurt or kill someone.

Although 'none' of us sympathize with a Psycho in the military (unless you are one also), and although we may have varying degree of sympathy for the first three groups, we must be mindful that all these people CHOSE to be "paid professionals".

Whenever TPTB and the MSM ring the Pavlovian Bell of "Support our Troops", that they mean ALL four categories -- even though they want you/us to picture only groups 1 and 2 in our feeble and malleable minds. We're not supposed to think or talk about groups 3. And talking about group 4 (the closet psychos) is taboo in their scheme of things.

Ho, ho, good catch, Winston.

We really should have a draft-serve two years like when I was 18. If every family has some skin in the game, more pressure is on the gooberment.  The draft put people from all walks of life together in a common force  and everyone could generally agree all kinds of stuff in their branch sucked, a great unifying force, haha. Of course, that is probably why the assholios created a volunteer force,

Termites have been undermining us for years. Time for the Orkin Man.

The mission was probably scheduled a long time ago.  The recent Russian missile test was also scheduled before the Ukrainian events.

If the situation were reversed, I would still expect the other side to continue their training in these circumstances. What would be threatening would be more than one ship, like a squadron, suddenly dispatched. If I were in command, I might also try to smuggle a sub in underneath the frigate. Depends on the international agreements in existence.

The Russians will not be concerned about two ships and a possible sub, although I am sure they are under close surveillance. This is certainly a newsworthy story considering events on land, but not a game-changer.

As an example, we used to plan an FTX as much as 1 year in advance.

Hey, prophecy is another subject.

If we look at the Bible, there may be more to this.

God has to be:

A. Incredibly PO'd.

B. Incredibly patient.

We have, as a nation, allowed these sociopaths to gain power, and let our morals slip. Some people call it Karma, or whatever, but we will pay a price. I ask for forgivesness every day, for I too, grew slack. To change our republic back, we must start with ourselves First, IMHO.

And Time is running out.

This is a missle boat, has lots of Tomahawks.  No helo in Hanger so no Air detachment onboard.  Most Helos can't land on a boat without extensive training.  They were deployed to show support.
