Ukraine's Military Mobilizes, Prepares For Combat: Trucks, APCs, SAMs, Howitzers, Tanks Rolling Out

Tyler Durden's picture

Did somebody say de-escalation?

Earlier today, photos were distributed showing the latest military convoy reinforcements heading into the Crimea, accompanies by a Police car demonstrating Moscow license plate numbers, most likely providing further support to the pro-Russian forces in the peninsula.

Supposedly the trucks are carrying troops to reinforces the members of the new Crimean army, pictured below:

While at the same time along the makeshift border between Crimea and the mainland, the Pro-Russian forces are putting down minefields.

However, the Ukrainians, having already been mobilized for over a week, finally appear set to seize back the offensive:

The first clip below captured the 80th Airborne Regiment out of Lviv moving out, direction mainland, preparing to repel foreign attack.

The next video shows what are allegedly Buk SAM batteries deployed in the Donetsk region, a city in Eastern Ukraine which in the past week has swayed between Ukraine and Russian authority.

The clip below shows the 95th Airborne brigade also moving out of their barracks in Zhytomyr in western Ukraine, heading East, with an impressive deployment of trucks and APCs.

2S19 "Msta-S" 152mm Howitzers on the move to Crimea.

Finally, 20 T-64 tanks preparing to depart in Bila Tserkva, a city in central Ukraine:

So where again are all those pundits who were so eager to explain away the Ukraine confrontation as one that will promptly be forgotten, and is by now most certainly priced in?

This is pure theater

No so much a theater as you don't see TV crews and/or crowds chanting, just a few common folk.

On the other hand, on the face of an imminent aggression from a much bigger enemy, it is a good thing to spread out the equipment to at least preserve some.

They're not going to fight with the Russian military.

They're going to fight to the civilian population of cities of Donetsk and Kharkov, where people oppose illegitimate, criminal pro-US nazis, who committed an armed coup in Kiev.
In those cities, no Russians military.

Follow the rail lines, there's a ~5km ferry crossing with RORO rail heads on each side at the entry to the Sea of Azov, to reinforce the Crimean front, and half a dozen options for outflanking.

The Obersalzberg Speech

Our strength consists in our speed and in our brutality. Genghis Khan led millions of women and children to slaughter – with premeditation and a happy heart. History sees in him solely the founder of a state. It’s a matter of indifference to me what a weak western European civilization will say about me. I have issued the command – and I’ll have anybody who utters but one word of criticism executed by a firing squad – that our war aim does not consist in reaching certain lines, but in the physical destruction of the enemy.

Accordingly, I have placed my death-head formation in readiness – for the present only in the East – with orders to them to send to death mercilessly and without compassion, men, women, and children of Polish derivation and language. Only thus shall we gain the living space which we need. Who, after all, speaks to-day of the annihilation of the Armenians?

Now enter Romania...

http://www.nineoclock.ro/basescu-romania-wants-to-be-part-to-ukraine-rus...

...Basescu pointed to some arguments, namely that in Romania there are more than 400,000 Romanian speaking Ukrainian citizens, that it is the EU member state nearest to Crimea and is one hundred kilometres away from another frozen conflict, the one in Transdnestr region. ‘Last but not least, Romania is not dependent on the gas imports from the Russian Federation. Therefore, it is not heavily dependent on gas imports from the Russian Federation and can replace them with other forms of energy supply or even with gas, through the interconnector to Hungary we can receive gas from Norway too,’ added Basescu, making it clear that Romania’s national interest is to be involved in this situation, also starting from the prerequisite that it has a 640 km long border with Ukraine.

The Romanian Head of State also said that Romania maintains that Ukraine, if it wants to, can sign the Association Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, as well the programme with the International Monetary Fund.

‘We shall maintain that Ukraine must urgently enter a programme with the International Monetary Fund, with the World Bank and, if necessary, with the European Union, aimed at funding Ukraine in the medium term, for the country not to default, to be able to make its domestic payments and, at the same time, to go through a fast-track reform programme,’ Basescu underscored. At the Eastern Partnership Summit of November 2013 in Vilnius, Ukraine should have signed the Association Agreement with the EU, but announced the suspension of this process.

‘U.S., Britain should guarantee Ukraine’s security’

President Traian Basescu also said before leaving for the European Council that the U.S. and Great Britain are the first two states with obligations to negotiate with the Russian Federation, as the two states are guarantors of Ukraine’s security, territorial integrity and independence, under a memorandum signed in Budapest, in 1994.

‘In my opinion, and I will tell this to the Council as well, the situation in Ukraine starts from several premises. ‘The first is related to the existence of the memorandum in Budapest, in which three states, the U.S., Great Britain and the Russian Federation constitute as guarantors of Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty over its territory (..),’ Basescu said.
According to President Basescu, a second premise on which Romania’s stance is based is the existence of a bilateral agreement signed in Kiev between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the stationing of some Russian military structures on Ukrainian territory throughout 2047....

Sorry m8, but you have it all wrong. Romania attacked the Soviet Union (Stalin & all) a few months after the Soviet Union, under threat of war annexed several historical romanian provinces (Bucovina - held by Ukraine, Basarabia - currently Republic of Moldova as an independent state, historical Basarabia and Herta county, currently in possession of Ukraine). This annexation was following the Molotov (Soviet) and Ribbentrop (German) non aggression pact, the same agreement that led to the invasion of Poland (many forget, but not only Hitler invaded Poland, but Stalin also - does Katyn forest massacre ring a bell?). In the same year the lovely Soviet Union also invaded Finland (the winter war). In 1944 Romanian government (under massive Soviet jewish control) decided to turn on Hitler and the romanian army indeed fought the Reich until the very last day of the war. Following that faithful day in August1944 Romania enjoyed a long spell of happiness and kumbaya under communist rule until the people fed up with so much freedom and prosperity (with heavy instigation and acceptance from both Bush and Gorbachev) shot Ceausescu on prime-time tv.

For a bit of perspective, Hitler was not and is not very much loved in Romania at all, maybe you are familiar with the Second Vienna Award (or Diktat) that resulted (in the same year with the Soviet annexation) of yet another historical province lost, Transilvania (including Maramures and Banat provinces). Following the annexation of Transilvania the fascist government of Hungary managed to kill a few thousand of peasants in several high profile massacres. To further sweeten the deal Romania also lost in the very same year the south of the Dobrogea province - Cadrilater (now belonging to Bulgaria).

Regarding "Romania is lucky they have a country after their last attack on Russia." - what do you mean? Are you sorry that only a million or so romanians got killed by soviets for trying to defend their country and trying to oust them  (dont know about other countries but here we had armed open rebellion against the soviet army and the communist government until the 60's - 15+ years after the end of WW2). Were you mood better if the death toll was higher?

And now for the concise answer, yes, Romania is indeed lucky to exist at all, considering the full-spa treatment it received at the hands of the Germans, the Soviet Union et all. But not for your reasons. As to the lessons learned, there's the big one: never trust anyone, especial the Russians or the western powers (i include here the current day romanian "leadership" - bought and payed by either the west or the russians - fuck'em all!).

I hope you learned a thing or two today, from the other side of the barricade if you will (i will not man any barricade if shit hits the fan, instead i'll try to get my family out of harm's way, as i don't believe in countries, borders, patriotism or other examples of low level brainwashing).

P.S.: stop equaling people to countries or what politicians say (hint, the politicians have to say certain things to stay in "power", and that is just as true in romania as in russia, US, UK or Belgium).

Have a very nice and peaceful day!

I've watched the energy problems in Europe and some countries like Romania, Bulgaria and others were slammed by excessively expensive renewable energy that was dumped on them.

Thousands of Bulgarians take the streets of Sofia everyday against the high energy prices, which almost doubled during the past year, since electricity it was privatised.
As a result of these protests, demonstrators managed to overthrow the Bulgarian government in February 2013.
People almost daily protest on the street as part of the energy movement, but also against local media, politicians from all parties and corruption.
Bulgaria has the lowest living standards, as well as the lowest salaries in the EU...

The incomprehensible part of it is how many people will willingly jump into the machine all by themselves behind their chosen flag that the elites' minions will wave like a fishing lure to whip up patriotic fervor. It's a shame in many ways, but also self-selecting in other ways. Not much the serf can do about except not fight their wars for them, then they'll trash the economy even more to get people lining up for the only paying jobs left...fighting in their fucking war. The new, and by law illegal, government in Kiev is not going to do anything unless the US Agents working with them on the ground have given the green light. Ukraines revolution almost smacks of Syria, where the US and NATO armed, trained and funded an Al-Qaeda invasion force. Of course west Ukraine offered up the needed radicals from inside Ukraine. While much of the revoultion is real and something I can support, the forces that carried out the revolution are beyond dispute fascist. You need to know Ukraines history to appreciate these people and the centuries of stuggle against their eastern Ukrainian countrymen. World War II saw these people's parents and grandparents back the German Army in the war against the USSR. Nothing has changed, they are back for more of the same.

But what I really wanted to say is that nothing is being done without US and NATO approval. You can bet that the west has all the intelligence operatives and special forces advisors working with the militants of Kiev. What the game plan is I don't know. All we can do is await events.

Putin Flouts Obama as Neocons Stew
By Donn Marten (about the author)
.
Obama Dunce
.
In the latest episode in the ongoing reality show "Death of a Narcissist' it is almost painful to see the incredible shrinking president Barack Obama continuing to thrash about on his own hook. For the second time in six months he has talked much smack in leading the international law violation machine that is neocon U.S. foreign policy towards yet another crisis from which he has no way of emerging victorious. In the late 1980's dark comedy "The War of the Roses" the divorce attorney played by Danny DeVito wisely offered up his counsel that "There is no winning! Only degrees of losing!" which Obama would be wise to consider. In choosing to hold a grudge rather than showing some actual gratitude towards Russian leader Vladimir Putin's allowing him to wiggle out of a trap of his own making that nearly led to an ugly war in Syria based upon lies the losing will of a very high degree this time around.

In conjuring up a bit of sage wisdom from an old bayou buddy of mine our glorious leader is again "up to his ass in alligators while losing sight of the original idea of draining the swamp" as the ongoing disaster of what was to be a splendid little coup in the Ukraine increasingly resembles one of those movies where a scheme has gone horribly awry. As a result of this latest in a series of misplays the reputation of what used to be the United States of America before it mutated into something called The Homeland is taking another hit. Obama and his stammering goon Secretary of State John "Skull and Bones" Kerry have again badly overplayed their hands and the latest rebuke over their limp-dicked threat of vague "consequences" including economic sanctions over the Russians rightfully securing their strategic assets in Crimea is only the beginning of what is going to be a devastating series of smack downs and retreat.

The Obama-Kerry act is getting pretty tired by now with this new abortion following Syria interruptus and is is clear that there is absolutely no coherent foreign policy in this woeful administration. With credibility having long ago left the building and the rest of the world (with the exception of the US-EU global finance mafia) laughing their asses off at our bare-ass naked emperor on the level of George W. Bush the game is for all intents and purposes over. Hell, Obama can't even control his own Congress, his own rogue NSA nor after years of hype and political trench warfare manage to get something as simple as a goddamned website to work properly so why should he expect to have any influence over a ruthless, seasoned political animal the likes of Putin? Enough of the tantrums already - Obama should just do the honorable thing by immediately firing Kerry, Victoria "f*ck the EU" Nuland, authoritarian Cass Sunstein's wife Samantha Power, Susan Rice and the rest of his over-matched foreign policy team and then just resign - spare us of the next two-plus years of indignity - hell Nixon did it. V.P. Joe Biden is perfectly capable of filling in as an interim captain to get the great star-spangled garbage barge into port where the thing can be fumigated and have the red-white and blue bunting touched up before Hillary takes the helm and sets sail for more gunboat diplomacy- he sure couldn't do any worse at his point despite his proclivity for gaffes.

The Washington Post continues to lead the strident push for war on Russia from the fetid cockroach nest of their necon infested editorial page bunker. The latest collection of nasty chicken hawk penned denouncements of Obama's "weakness' towards the defiant top Russian features a gaggle of miscreants as well as one of history's all time great war criminals in Henry A. Kissinger who should do us all a favor and just hurry up and die already. Not that the gospel of the Beltway insider scum is alone in the incredible outpouring of wall-to wall anti-Putin "two-minutes hate" being pumped out 24/7 and the lying about the neo-Nazis supported by the US/EU who provided the street muscle for the Kiev coup but for a paper that had already pretty much hit bottom in terms of credibility it is something to see Jeff Bezos' new media operation set up a rig and start drilling to new depths. It is impossible to watch or read damned near anything this week without having to be bludgeoned by war machine propaganda that surpasses that of late summer's Syria sales job that cynically used that shameful war porn video loop of those gassed and dying kids. Thank God for the Oscar Pistorius trial because it is the only thing that that provides any relief these days from the Putin hating blitzkrieg.

The WaPo even dredged up the corrupt former Georgia leader Mikheil Saakashvili, a western puppet who came to power in one of those phony color revolutions was humiliated when his August 2008 illegal incursion into South Ossetia resulted in an ass-kicking delivered by the big bad bear that sent that tie chewing little prick crying home to mommy. The editorial entitled "When Putin invaded my country" is a shameless piece of cookie cutter crap that is chock full of revisionist history and the now flogged to death neocon boilerplate talking point invocations of "Munich", "Hitler", "Neville Chamberlain", "Churchill", "Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia" blah, blah, blah. Such a lofty forum is barely indistinguishable from the standard right-wing horseshit that is thrown out by such southern-fried motherfuckers like Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee at the annual CPAC extravaganza where it is even money that an unwashed draft-dodging baby daddy like Ted Nugent will win the early straw poll for the 2016 GOP nod,

Take the big names like Kissinger and Saakashvila, mix in the standard "take the money and run' drive-by shooting poison pen columns by longtime propagandists like Jennifer Rubin, Charles Kraüthammer and George Will and you have a textbook example of exactly why the establishment "dead tree' media is dying and by the constant wailing for relevance through Cold War II it must really hurt. The aforementioned triad are set up well for their looming retirements which is a damned shame because none of they will ever have to worry about having to go out and get real jobs.

These a**holes just don't get it do they? They are not going to be able to throw their weight around against a country like Russia as they do with Iraq, Iran and such mighty military powers as Somalia and the island of Grenada. Putin is in a position to tell them to just go and f*ck themselves and that is exactly what he is doing. The American empire has been reduced to an in hock up to it's ass future colony of China with an economy that is incapable of producing anything other than death, mass surveillance and the skimmed money that is collected by a large collection of state-subsidized predatory jackals on Wall Street. This is what happens when decades of borrowing to fund the bloated military machine that exists due to never having adequately made the sane transition out of World War II into a victorious and humble nation that could have instead used all of that wasted money that has been chucked into a sucking black hole of murder and thievery to actually build a society that would by now have overcome every one of the catastrophic problems that are now coming home to roost as we stumble towards collapse.

Let's hope that when Putin delivers the long-deserved rubbing of Uncle Sam's big nose into a giant pile of his own steaming hypocrisy. Then the rest of the civilized world can get the message and also give a big middle finger to an overstretched and doomed former superpower that has now become the very "evil empire" that was so long used to justify all of the military spending while destroying what was once the most prosperous middle class in world history. All of it pissed away too and especially so in that 21st Century that Kerry so loves to invoke when making a fool out of himself.

There is no winning! Only degrees of losing!"

"...and [it] is clear that there is absolutely no coherent foreign policy in this woeful administration...."

Not.

This is the disillusioned former believer's lament.

What is true is that they've lost their ability to justify their policy in any terms that the rest of us could buy into. There was a time they could even believe their own lies.  Now there's just the imperative to make shit up and lie about it.

They're getting excited and reckless because world power seems almost within grasp, but also because things are coming apart under them - the economy and the leaks - and they sense time is running out.  Which is the one thing many of us would agree with them on.  And much as they hold us in contempt, it's quite clear from their preparations for martial law and their huge overreaction to Occupy Wall Street and leakers like Ed Snowden that they're terrified of the anger of the people.

Why do I bother to say this?  Because even as we laugh at their lies we must not underestimate these criminals.  What they say in public may not be coherent.  What they are saying to each other in private is evidently coherent enough to produce a highly consistent and persistent pattern of behavior.

While I enjoyed the geneal tone and content of the article - I find some of the allusions to be offensive, insofar as they have been the foundation of so much propaganda.

Firstly the idea that Obama has any power, or is a decision maker is totally false - by targeting Obama it validates the political system in which he is simply an actor or passenger.  It is the ENTIRE political system which is has been bought out by the banksters, and it makes NO DIFFERENCE who is president - so removing Obama and replacing him with someone else is a WASTE OF TIME.  So the article very subtly insists that the system isnt broke, and we can vote in someone better and everything will be alright - which is totally false.

Secondly it suggests that the empire status of the US has value, and its such a shame to see it fading and weakening - that such a failure is almost treasonous and the blame should be shouldered by the current political administration.  This is a similar fallacy to the last one.  Firstly it sublty suggests that the US SHOULD be an empire, a military super power - that such a thing is a great ideal, and secondly that if only there were political change then US prestige and power could be salvaged.  This is pure propaganda, the US constitution declares a policy of non-interference, and anything else should be considered inimical to the interests of the people, because IT IS!. Additionally, the US is operated by the banksters, and the Military Industial Complex (MIC) is a division of the banksters - together with AIPAC, the mass media and so on - the banksters have a continuous chain of authority over US politics that will not be broken no matter how many politicians are removed or shuffled.

So all in all - this article falls well short of being a useful or trustworthy piece - because it re-inforces foundational propaganda - it is extremely subtle, but it is essentially worse than useless - despite being accurate on so many things, it fails the final test - existence of a hidden agenda.

Carl Gershman, president of NED, wrote last September that “Ukraine is the biggest prize”.  The man knows whereof he speaks. He has presided over NED since its beginning, overseeing the Rose Revolution in Georgia (2003), the Orange Revolution in Ukraine (2004), the Cedar Revolution in Lebanon (2005), the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan (2005), the Green Revolution in Iran (2009), and now Ukraine once again. It’s as if the Cold War never ended.

-

The current unbridled animosity of the American media toward Putin also reflects an old practice. The United States is so accustomed to world leaders holding their tongue and not voicing criticism of Washington’s policies appropriate to the criminality of those policies, that when a Vladimir Putin comes along and expresses even a relatively mild condemnation he is labeled Public Enemy Number One and his words are accordingly ridiculed or ignored.

Could be to Kiev to protect the newly installed puppets ( until elections are held ) or are they headed East to secure a variety of cities, or to the Crimea to be slaughtered by the Russians. If they go to Kiev it is a non event. If to a variety of cities in the East, Russians will certainly move in to protect their Russian speaking citizens and compatriots seeking closer ties with Russia which means a long drawn out struggle for land and winning over a split society by use of force or economic incentives

Let's hope they are headed for Kiev.

Humans are physically like water balloons.  As a combat medic I saw what high-speed projectiles and white-hot shrapnel can do to "water balloons" - it ain't very pretty...  I never heard a soldier say he was glad he was "dying for his country"; I did hear soldiers crying for their mothers...

Why?

Obviously their mothers didn't do a very good job of raising them.

Dunno about that. I make it clear to my son in no uncertain terms that if he ever joins the military he will not be allowed into my house. Parents need to take some responsibility and shut down the war machine.

Putin holds a miniscule amount of Treasuries and 'dumping' them wouldn't even cause a burp in the US economy.

Russia is a formidable enemy militarily but they are no match economically for the US, they would be squashed if Putin wanted to play that game.

As of Dec 2013 Russia holds 138 billion,  a far cry from 25% unless you believe there is only about $600 billion in Treasuries out there, China and Japan hold $2.4 trillion by themselves.

According to Israel Shamir, Blackwater mercs are already in Ukraine:

The junta appointed an oligarch to rule Donbas, Mr Sergey Taruta, but he had difficulty assuming power as the local people did not want him, and with good reason: Taruta had bought the major Polish port of Gdansk and brought it to bankruptcy. It seems he is better at siphoning capital away than in running serious business. Ominously, Mr Taruta brought with him some unidentified, heavily armed security personnel, reportedly guns-for-hire from Blackwater (a.k.a. Academi) fresh from Iraq and Afghanistan. He will need a lot more of them if he wants to take Donbas by force. In Kharkov, the biggest Eastern city, erstwhile capital of Soviet Ukraine, local people ejected the raiding force of the Right Sector from government offices, but police joined with the oligarchs. While the fake revolution took place in Kiev under the tutelage of US and EC envoys, the real revolution is taking place now, and its future is far from certain.. The Ukraine hasn’t got much of an army, as the oligarchs stole everything ever assigned to the military. The Kiev regime does not rely on its army anyway. Their attempt to draft able-bodied men failed immediately as hardly anybody answered the call. They still intend to squash the revolution. Another three hundred Blackwater mercenaries landed Wednesday in Kiev airport. The Kiev regime applied for NATO help and expressed its readiness to allow US missiles to be stationed in the Ukraine. Missiles in the Ukraine (as now stationed in Poland, also too close for Russian comfort) would probably cross Russia’s red line, just as Russian missiles in Cuba crossed America’s red line in 1962. Retired Israeli intelligence chief Yaakov Kedmi, an expert on Russia, said that in his view the Russians just can’t allow that, at any price, even if this means all-out war.
