Mysterious Iranian "Mr. Ali" Purchased Tickets For "Stolen Passport" Passengers; Paid Cash

Tyler Durden's picture

While the mystery builds over the still officially unexplained disappearance of Malaysian flight MH370, or just who the two passengers with "stolen" passports may have been although we expect a revelation on this issue shortly, the FT has added yet another twist to what is sure to be a conspiracy thriller for weeks to come: the paper reports that the Thai travel agent who booked the tickets for the men in question said that she had been asked to arrange the travel by an Iranian contact. Adding to the confusion is the revelation that originally the mysterious Iranian, known only as Mr. Ali, tried to reserve seats for the two men on separate flights not to China, but to Europe, one on a Qatar Airways flight, and the other on Etihad. And the punchline: a "friend" of Mr. Ali's paid for the tickets in cash.

The story as explained by the Financial Times:

Benjaporn Krutnait, owner of the agency Grand Horizon Travel in Pattaya, Thailand, said the Iranian, a long-term business contact who she knew only as “Mr Ali”, first asked her to book cheap tickets to Europe for the two men on March 1. Ms Benjaporn initially reserved one of the men on a Qatar Airways flight and the other on Etihad.

But the tickets expired when Ms Benjaporn did not hear back from Mr Ali. When he contacted her again on Thursday, she rebooked the men on the Malaysia Airlines flight through Beijing because it was the cheapest available. Ms Benjaporn booked the tickets through China Southern Airlines via a code share arrangement.

A friend of Mr Ali paid Ms Benjaporn cash for the tickets, she said, adding that it was quite common for people to book tickets in Pattaya through middle men such as Mr Ali, who then take a commission.

Mr Ali could not immediately be reached for comment on a Tehran mobile number provided by Ms Benjaporn. She added that she had known Mr Ali for about three years, during which time he spent a lot of time in Pattaya and booked travel for himself or his contacts at least once a month on average. There is no evidence that Mr Ali knew the two men were travelling on stolen passports.

Still, before some read into this as an attempt to provoke Iran sentiment, the travel agent said she "did not believe Mr Ali was linked to terrorism, particularly as he had not specified booking the Kuala Lumpur-Beijing flight but had instead asked for the cheapest route to Europe." Ms Benjaporn said she was speaking about the case because she was concerned over the speculation about a terrorist attack and wanted the facts to be known.

And the final wrinkle in the story came over the weekend, when China Southern, a codeshare partner for the Malaysian Airlines flight, revealed on its Weibo page the following (google translated):

Today, Malaysia Airlines MH370 lost contact is shared by a horse fly with China Southern Airlines flight code. According to preliminary statistics, there are seven Southern Airlines passenger market square, where a Chinese nationals, two Ukrainian nationals, an Austrian, an Italian nationals, a Dutch nationals and one Malaysian. Specific circumstances still verification. After the incident, I immediately started emergency procedures and first time to contact MAS obtain real-time information. For seven passengers on the plane lost contact, we will try to help Malaysia Airlines to do follow-up work.

Two Ukrainians?

So one mysterious accident, which by now appears to almost certainly be a midair "disintegration" that has loose ends linking both Iran and Ukraine? A very unfortunate set of completely unrelated coincidences, or something far more sinister? We expect the full "story", massaged as it may ultimately be, to be revealed in the coming hours.

A couple of thoughts FWIW...

The time of useful consciousness at 35K is 30 to 60 seconds.

There only a few reasons to account for the aircraft turning back...explosive decompression or a fire would necessitate a rapid decent to lower altitudes. A steep (75-90 degrees) left or right decending turn would help unload the wings and provides for a quicker decent.

Also, if the cockpit was breached, the pilot may prefer to perform a manuver such as a steep wing over/decent to throw a highjacker off balance.

Not a pilot and don't understand how that all works but wouldn't there have been a distress signal in that situation?

And to the second thought - Aren't the cockpits reinforced? You can't just stroll up in the cockpit anymore can you? Also - if the cockpit was being "breached" I'm assuming there would be a distress signal unless you can just break it down with your shoulder real quick and take control.

Aviate, navigate, communicate...in that order.

Whatever happened up there was catastrophic and didn't allow time for a distress call.

If the NSA can watch me jerk off in real-time than something needs to be added to commercial planes where we can figure out these incidents without locating some box at the bottom of the ocean.

Maybe the pilot or copilot capped his coworker and brought it down.

Saves the trouble of breaching the cockpit.

Absolutely routine for military craft to be involved in search and rescue operations.  In fact, who the hell else?   Nothing unusual in this whatsoever.   This is a multi-nation search.

Last plane crash that resembled this was Air France flight 447.

Not one US battleship was involved. In fact...not one US Naval vessel was involved.

It should be noted that some US Naval  equipment was involved (a sonar array towed behind two french ships). A US Naval P-3 Orion was also used shortly, though that was just a maritime patrol aircraft searching for possible survivors.

No US Naval battle ships.

C'mon.  This guy just books flights.  He didn't tell the travel agent which flight, just the cheapest flight.  He wasn't part of any plan, that is completely obvious.  However he might be making his nut by running illegals to various EU countries.  Likely guilty of being a slime ball, but that's about it.

I agree with you.

The Mr Ali story looks like a distraction. It's unlikely he had anything to do with the plane's disappearance.

And even if the two passengers allegedly travelling on stolen passports were the target of some sort of terror plot by "persons unknown", it would have taken a lot of detailed planning by the perps to bring it off. Apart from that, the apparent lack of any co-ordinated plan by Mr Ali to get them on that specific flight suggests thy're just a couple of shady people.

I'm beginning to think this incident has nothing to do with terrorism. IMO the plane either suffered catastrophic mid air break-up caused by structual problems OR it collided with another airborne object of some sort.

Glued together?

I don't think so. We're talking here about a B777-200 which is/was 15+ years old.

Perhaps the only clue might be that it apparently had some wing damage a while back.

Of course, the "Iranian" proved without a doubt that he was Iranian (with a passport? a forged passport?) when he bought those tickets because there's absolutely no country in the Middle East or close by that would be willing to kill innocent people to frame Iran with a terrorist act if it even was a terrorist act, right? And since the two passengers had phony passports, the "Iranian" who bought their tickets couldn't possibly have had a phony passport, too, right? And smart people don't use forged documents when carrying out a terrorist attack, right?

"We are checking the information. We know some of the answers but not all of them and we are determined to get to the bottom of this," he says.

Barkan, 37, is wanted by police in New Zealand for his alleged role in an espionage scandal there.

It's Asia, Jake. It would be suspicious if there WEREN'T some illegal funny business going on with the flight. In the Shia world, "Mr. Ali" is the equivalent of "Mr. Smith" in the US. No reason to assume that the passports were part of a terrorist plot. Or that "Mr. Ali" was even Iranian.

Of course, anything is possible. But there wasn't anything about the flight that would make it attractive to terrorists (other than lax security). So I favor the "equipment malfunction" theory at this point.

Malaysia military tracked missing plane to west coast

(Reuters) - Malaysia's military believes a jetliner missing for almost four days turned and flew hundreds of kilometers to the west after it last made contact with civilian air traffic control off the country's east coast, a senior officer told Reuters on Tuesday.

In one of the most baffling mysteries in recent aviation history, a massive search operation for the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER has so far found no trace of the aircraft or the 239 passengers and crew.

Malaysian authorities have previously said flight MH370 disappeared about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for the Chinese capital Beijing.

"It changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude. It made it into the Malacca Strait," the senior military officer, who has been briefed on investigations, told Reuters.

That would appear to rule out sudden catastrophic mechanical failure, as it would mean the plane flew around 500 km (350 miles) at least after its last contact with air traffic control, although its transponder and other tracking systems were off.

...

At the time it lost contact with civilian air traffic control, the plane was roughly midway between Malaysia's east coast town of Kota Bharu and the southern tip of Vietnam, flying at 35,000 ft.
The Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping channels, runs along Malaysia's west coast.
Malaysia's Berita Harian newspaper quoted air force chief Rodzali Daud as saying the plane was last detected at 2.40 a.m. by military radar near the island of Pulau Perak at the northern end of the Strait of Malacca. It was flying about 1,000 meters lower than its previous altitude, he was quoted as saying.
There was no word on what happened to the plane thereafter.
The effect of turning off the transponder is to make the aircraft inert to secondary radar, so civil controllers cannot identify it. Secondary radar interrogates the transponder and gets information about the plane's identity, speed and height.
It would however still be visible to primary radar, which is used by militaries.
