Having had his fun with minimum-wages and employment supply-demand-disequilibrium, the President of the United States has decided it's time that overtime was "modernized" to save-or-create a few more jobs... "if you like your over-time, you can keep your over-time"

President Barack Obama is seeking changes in overtime rules that will make millions of workers eligible for time-and-a-half pay for their extra work.
Obama intends to sign a presidential memorandum Thursday directing the Labor Department to propose rules that expand the number of employees who benefit from overtime pay.
And USA Today,
White House aides say current rules are outdated and allow employers to exempt too many workers from overtime pay.
Business groups say the Obama order is likely to lead to less employment and slower economic growth.
The new Obama order is also aimed at congressional Republicans who have blocked many of the president's proposals, including his call to increase the minimum wage.

Well, if your payroll depends on paying an engineer less than the assembler on the production line, then you have a failed business model and are stealing from that engineer. I, as an engineer, have been in that situation, where 12 months out of the year I worked 60+ hours a week and saw guys making more than me on an hourly rate in production. I was never in charge of money or other employees, so being classified as salary exempt was just convention and had absolutely nothing to do with how much I contributed to the kinds of management decisions exemption laws were intended.
I rarely agree with the failure and chief, but when it comes to salary exemption laws, they are far past updating. If you don't want to pay your employees for the time they put into the day for you, then don't hire anyone and do it all yourself. If you can't, then man up and pay them for their time.
All that said, I am going to guess that the big corporations (MIC corporations, Insurance corporations, and of course the tech industry) are all going to have provisions that allow them to skirt the law... so that only the mom and pop, the sole proprietor are going to be required to change.
Last I checked this isn't North Korea. Ever hear of Right to Work? You didn't have to sit there at the nice air conditioned desk maxing out your 401K all those years. You were free to operate the drill press on the shop floor.

That is exactly what I do now. I work as a technician for hourly wages.
So are you against salary contracts? Are the hourly people paid market wages or are they union? Are you paid market wages or is it just you that is unappreciated? I had a supervisor working for me and I gave him the choice of salary or hourly with overtime. He chose salary as he liked the idea of a predefined income, plus he saw a salary as more prestigious than hourly. But when work got heavy and a few hourly guys were grossing more than he, all shit hit the fan. My cousin managed a fast food restaurant thirty years ago, and as a manager, he had a salary plus overtime. When he had to work extra hours they would take his total hours, divide them into his normal salary, and that hourly rate is what they paid over forty hours, so he actually made less per hour for each additional hour he worked.
Make your deal and quit bitching about it. As an engineer, you should be able to use a calculator when considering your salary.

You want more money for minimum wages, so people will employ more for less hours so they do not have to pay overtime and then he comes out with this shit. On the other hand. When I was a salaried manager at Dollar General making $400 a week I was told by my District Manager that if I didn't schedule myself for at least 75 hrs a week I would be fired. It sucked and I deserved overtime. But it's still a free country (sort of) so I left.Just my story.

40 x $4.32 = $172.80 (Straight time)
35 x $6.49 = $227.15 (Time and a half)
75 Hours @ ~$400.00

So the pols and crats are going to try to force them to hire by making unemployment more expensive.
However, in an economy that is imploding as we speak, all this will do is increase the rate of slide into the abyss.
