The Tanks Are Coming While Russia, US "Remain At Odds" Over Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

With Interfax reporting that Belarus has begun full-scale military drills in a "readiness check", images from Russia and Ukraine suggest the worst-case scenario - that Russia is making preparations to invade Ukraine, not just Crimea but perhaps as far west as Kharkiv, or even beyond - is more possible. Talks have broken down:

  • *LAVROV SAYS RUSSIA, U.S. REMAIN AT ODDS ON UKRAINE: INTERFAX
  • *LAVROV SAYS RUSSIA TO RESPECT `WILL' OF CRIMEAN PEOPLE

Russia now has a massive force of tanks, troops, artillery, aircraft, and naval forces in position to potentially invade mainland Ukraine from Crimea in the south, but also from positions east and north of Ukraine.

Lavrov adds:

  • *LAVROV SAYS RUSSIA TO RESPECT CHOICE MADE AT CRIMEAN REFERENDUM
  • *LAVROV SAYS KERRY `DIDN'T THREATEN RUSSIA WITH ANYTHING'
  • *LAVROV SAYS WESTERN SANCTIONS WOULD BE COUNTERPRODUCTIVE

And subtley poitning out the hypocrisy:

  • RUSSIA'S LAVROV SAYS IF KOSOVO WAS A SPECIAL CASE THEN CRIMEA SHOULD BE A SPECIAL CASE TOO

Then Lavrov said this:

  • RUSSIA HAS HAD AND CAN HAVE NO PLANS TO INVADE SOUTHEAST OF UKRAINE - LAVROV

Which seems to run counter to the following images pouring in from across Russia of even more firepower on the move.

And images suggest more to come...

And finally:

  • *LAVROV SAYS `EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT CRIMEA MEANS FOR RUSSIA'

Which we suspect is why all the tanks are rolling

It seems to me that Russia may be making a show of force simply to make it seem that if they stop at annexing the Crimea (what I think will be the extent of it) we can all breathe a sigh of relief. When the referendum in the Crimea is passed this Sunday and Russia accepts the peninsula back into the fold, the west will not protest — if it stops there. I think Russia will pause, consolidate and fortify this gain before making another move. If the west chooses to fight over the Crimea then Russia will be able to paint the west as the aggressor and the puppet western government in Kiev as not democratic due to their refusal to recognize a vote by the Crimean people. Then Russia will end up taking eastern Ukraine as well.

We do live in interesting times. Things were much simpler and less dangerous during the Soviet/US cold war days.

I was thinking along similar lines: Putin will pause after Crimea. This will give the Chinese time to renew their fuss over Tawian and a couple of empty rocks.

In my mind, they're both pushing just hard enough to help get more hawkish Congresscritters elected in Nov. After we ramp up military spending even more (if that's even possible), Putin will start his march west. At the same time, China will push east. We'll have to fight a war on two fronts, with no creditors to buy our debt to finance the wars--which will end well. They're pushing just hard enough to tease us into overreaching.

No Russians are going to take the south and east for sure, Kherson ukraine controls all the water, electricity, and gas coming into Crimea and are making threats, this will give reason for the Russians to go in and secure Crimea's water etc, I think it will be an invasion by the 'Crimean Armed Forces' Securing their piece of the pie in Ukraine by liberating parts that have strategic interests for Crimea

Damn those Kherson girls are HOT.  Can't wait to go once things settle down !!!!!  Still you have a very good point, Ukraine is pretty broken and a financial basketcase, not worth it to the Russians to try to fix.  They most likely will take the real pro Russian areas and Odessa to screw over Kiev as much as they can, then let the Euros and the USA deal with the financial mess of West Ukraine.

That's provided the Russians can get out of their staging areas and into the fight. Obviously "so much for the element of surprise."

It is a show of force, but it is also definite preparation. If and when the decision is made, the speed of those trains and their actual starting point isn't just an obnoxious hypothetical math problem.

Yeah, but they were killing brown people back then.  Most of them weren't even Christian!  Sorry, I know those are hard things to accept in an era where nobody wants to admit tribalism, but I think a lot of the reason we white folks are:

1.  Giving a shit about the Ukraine

2.  Conflicted about what side to root for

Is because Russia is headed by a strong white dude, we're headed by a homosexual black guy, and white Christian lives are at stake.  I expect a flurry of downvotes here, but I'm probably more right than I'd even care to admit.  I don't necessarily find fault in this either.  We're human.  This is how our brains operate.

The longer this drags out, the greater the chance of fizzling.

We have the monsters at Stratfor and PNAC and 2 or 3 other NGOs rehypothecating truth. The numbers are coming in. Its not playing out like they planned. The profit just isnt there for their overlords to scrape (apart from yet another gold heist). A new scheme is being hatched by SPECTRE. They are buying time. This isnt about governments. Its about the profit and loss of certain INDIVIDUALS. There will be no place on EARTH where they can hide. How funny that the nazi hunters are revealed to be nazis themselves. They are now to be hunted.

I'm disappointed. I was so hoping for an empowering dent in their facia to rally the troops. The battle will continue; the fight conducted by individuals.

We have had a sort of agreement since the end of WW2 that full-scale conventional warfare is off the table as it would ineveitably lead to nuclear warfare which would inevitably be the end of the world. So... On a conspiratorial note, This agreement has been one of the warmonger's excuses for "police action" sorts of wars like the travesty that was Vietnam. I mean... Come on... No, we can't have old school, massive warfare, but we still have to sell arms!!! Could there be an agreement on the table for a limited exchange to boost the arms industry?

And while I am ranting... Is this really aimed at Russia? Nobody in their right mind wants to have war with the country willing to lose 20 million to stop the Germans. Ina  game theory sort of sense, I am wondering if this all really aimed at roping in definiteively the Europeans into the deep state. Vote me down! Please!

Russia is going to launch an attack from the south from the Crimea and from the east into Ukraine.  They are going to take enough (south and east) that will make the West Ukraine impossible to govern with the govt. it has and the ones that are on the fence will be intimidated to get back on the Russian side of the equation and allow it to be pro Russia.  Those massive amounts of tanks and ground equipment is being sent to be used FOR A GROUND ASSAULT.  They already have Crimea that is Russian friendly, hell the populace is doing much of the work of keeping it friendly for the Russians.

no threats or declarations yet. Would be interesting to see if Russia goes all the way and swallows all of Ukraine.

Definitely has the hallmarks of a pre-planned invasion. But will it lead to war? Certainly no legal basis for a full fledged invasion...and given the size of the real estate involved definitely presages are a far less formalized "post Cold War era" where discussions involve boots on the ground not negotiation.

Simply put "will the USA and Russia be in a state of war next week?"

Full-fledged takeover is what the West had planned.  A takeover of Crimea, with the threat to take Eastearn Ukraine to keep the West honest, was Russia's plan (as can be plainly seen).

If the West try to take the Crimea back, Russia will take the opportunity (w/ Belarus) to make further gains.  Of course, at that point we are looking at serious conflict.

If Putin/Russia is appeased, sure, Eastern Ukraine will be back on the menu at some point in the future, but primarily to stop the US being able to install missile defenses (and lets face it, missile defenses can be used for offense as well).

Your first mistake was owning mining stocks.

If you don't hold it, you don't own it.

Your second mistake was worrying about fluctuations in the USD price of gold.

Gold is money, the USD is toilet paper.  You hold gold to preserve your wealth independent of government fiat.  To the extent we're all still largely compensated for our productive labor in USD, it is better for the spot price of gold to be lower, not higher.

That was one of the funniest things I have read in a while, and you know why -- because it is true.

This country is just a hollowed-out version of a first world country.  Too bad.

I have lived abroad, I know the truth that Americans are afraid of their governments, but in France and other places the government is afraid of the people.  This tells you everything.  Everyday I see the state governments and federal government disregarding the rule of law, we are clearly in decline.  We clearly have become "factions" that are "rent seekers" as described in the Federalist Papers, and the abandonment of the requirement that in order to vote one must own property has, by logical necessity, allowed democracy to be a game of political theft.

I think Legal Eagle has it right, although I understand your point. The predations of the NSA, IRS and others are simply means to further exert control. The treasonous bureau chiefts and Comrade in Chief would not do this unless they were fairly sure there would be no consequences. Men love power more than money, sex or fame so between the megalomaniacs and the true believers, a.k.a. "America right or wrong!" in these departments there is enough raw material to build a soft autocracy. Hard autocracy comes later.

Having said that, I was just sitting at a table with family members who live in the East, Western Europe and communist countries and we were noting the ways America is first tracking down and shaking down it's citizens worldwide. Second it is using the connections to Americans to use financial and legal muscle to penetrate the workings of foreign banks and even security systems. We agreed that Americans may be the on the way to becoming the least free major nation. They have had kids in other countries and are debating not making them American citizens at all. You all probably know the reasons from reading ZH. The primary method is actually through IRS laws which carry over into banking, business, travel and so on. The NSA can probably crack the security of those who resist in cooperation with the IRS, ICE, DHS and several other agencies.

"We clearly have become "factions" that are "rent seekers" as described in the Federalist Papers, and the abandonment of the requirement that in order to vote one must own property has, by logical necessity, allowed democracy to be a game of political theft."

Kind of disappointed that no one sees the contradiction in that statement.

Translation: in order to vote we have to owe money to the banks, ergo, everyone that "owns" property is a potential rent seeker.  Unless you mean that only those who hold clear title are allowed to vote, which rules out nearly everyone under 50.

Of course property owners (being virtuous by that definition) will vote for the good of everyone, not just their own self interest, right?

Here's a fact you may want to consider:

I have natural rights that have nothing to do with owning property.  Infringe those, and I'll burn your little farm to the ground with the same impunity that you used to cut me out of the political equation.

I don't care if you own the Hearst Mansion.  I will not be dictated to by some cunt who thinks he's better than me because he owns a patch of land.

Fact is, you don't own it anyway.  Stop paying taxes and see what happens, Mr Land Owner.

Yo, if I own the van do I get to vote?   How about the clothes on my back?

Know what?  There's a lot of van dwellers out there who see you (property owners) as the source of their misery.  Not saying it's true, just that it's what they think.  So then, how many of them are there, vs. you?

This is the ugly underbelly of the credit bubble.  People who bid up the price of a home beyond what anyone could afford - people whose votes enabled the politicians and bankers that allowed that to happen - all have targets on their backs.

Remember:

40 upvotes for Mr gotta-own-property-to-vote, and a mere 1 for the bear with a rational rebuttal?  Right then.  Keep on renting in the free world, suckers.  After all, where else can you get that extra income to pay the mortgage?  Of course you'll have to get your kids out of the basement first, but that shouldn't be hard.  Lots of well paying jobs out there that they can afford a mortgage from the bank, right?

Such blinding stupidity I don't even know where to begin.  I'll bet all 40 of those votes are property owners though.  Just makes the case doesn't it?  Fucking smug-ass rent-seekers.  Self serving to the end.

Hey I got an Idea.  Lets make it a requirement that you gotta own property to vote on Zero Hedge!  Secret ballot of course.  Wouldn't want anyone to be embarassed by what they signed on for.

WTF.  Let's drop the facade.  You gotta own property worth at least $1M and have 10 indentured servants in order to vote.

Jesus, Joseph and Mary, are you people for real?

I really do wonder how the military is dealing with this.  I was in the USMC in the first half of the 1980's and by and large the enlisted strata was quite redneck.  Nonetheless we had semi-out soldiers and no one gave them a hard time.  OTOH no one was sportin' wood in the showers or holding hands in public.

Funny though, we had a great deal of respect for the ROK Marines and I remember seeing those guys holding hands in the streets in Pohang SK.  The ROK Marines were tough sons of bitches - concrete barracks, cold showers, kimchi, excellent martial arts training.  They had NK breathing down on them every day of their lives and were trained to be ready to fight at a moment's notice.

Pictures being authentic?....

Figuring out whether or not they are real or not should be the least of ours and John breath Kerry's worries.

It's the hidden ones that are not in plain sight like the S-400s or the ones under water that should be of much greater concern.

What I wouldn't give to just be worried about a 5 mile phalanx of tanks and armored personnel carriers in 2014 between superpowers!

I think the pictures being authentic is important.  This is about propaganda and winding up the public in the EU / USA that a hot conflict with Russia is inevitable.  These pictures are being used as a weapon to sway public opinion because people can relate to a tank or APC as something dangerous, but an oversized truck with a big tube on the back of it doesn’t look frightening at all (S400), so these kinds of pics are needed to increase the FUD.   And where are the pictures of NATO armor rolling towards the Ukraine?

We're so far beyond the normal at this point God only knows how this will wind up tomorrow, or next week.

Forget the tapped phone calls between State Department officials planning sabotage of a legitimate sovereign Nation, UN/NATO reps discussing (snipers being used that are part of the "new government") on it's own peoples, U.S.  drones and the Blackwater mercenaries we've already heard about that are on the ground in Kiev... Looking at the preponderance of evidence collectively that is already out there and you ask how could we have allowed it to get this far?

If you could step outside yourself just a few years back before Libya and Syria got underway I would have been surprised that a sitting President would not have been impeached or 90% of Congress thrown behind bars for the acts of treason they've already committed, Benghazi-Gate, Fast & Furious, false flag use of WMD in Syria to start a war, direct violations of our Constitutional Rights A-Z...

Now we're attempting a war with not one but two nuclear superpowers?

If the Western Europeans don't side with Russia soon, or the American people don't collectively find shame it what they have done and are still doing in this World the last Act is going to be a memorable one for those that manage to survive it.

Sure hope I'm not around to see it!

Kissinger said last week the way to settle this is to "Finlandize" Ukraine, meaning it must stay neutral and cannot join NATO.  I think Russia would accept this.  Annexing Crimea is not necessarily a good idea as it would change the composition of the Ukraine electorate from one that slightly favors Russia to one that favors the EU/US.

The worst of it is, it doesn't matter to the US what happens next to Ukraine.  The old Kissinger/Brzezinski Chessboard Strategy is still in play, as it has been for 40 years.  Surround Russia and China with a ring of blood and fire.  Prevent access to resources and trans-shipment routes.  Cultivate the cruelest, most violent, least likely to negotiate parties in a society, arm them, inflame them, and turn them loose to destroy.  The goal isn't domination the way we think of it; it's to create bloody chaos so the best-armed can do whatever they want.

The definition of terrorism is to take violent action, for political ends, to destroy any middle ground and discredit any "esteemed interlocutors" who might settle differences, to provoke an outsized response from one's adversary, to further splinter and alienate anyone with good faith, and eventually exhaust all opposition and seize control at the end.

How many times have we seen this play out?

Since I live in the heartland of the Imperium, I suppose I'm glad we're doin' it to them rather than them doin' it to us.  But I don't see those as inevitable options.  "Red Dawn" aside, nobody's going to invade the US.  However, it's quite possible that our global finance capital system is running into finite constraints, which render it useless.  Our system relies on infinite markets, resources, energy, and money.  We can make money infinite by making it abstract, but everything else has limits of geography or economy.  Rather than deal with it and refine our system, those who have benefitted the most and stand to lost the most in a reset demand we destroy others so they pay us to rebuild on our terms.

Putin's the enforcer for the Russian oligarchs and criminals. They're the kind of people who will kill hostages to spite kidnappers.  We're sending John Kerry to bleat about legality in a conflict he knows he created?  Weak beer indeed.

In international confrontations, because of the banker-cartel-purchased media, it’s extremely difficult to see just who wears the good guy white hat. It is true in the Ukraine crisis, where central bankers promoted a military coup on a elected government, just as it was true that the U.S. State Department manufactured a merger with the Chinese Communists after WWII and a sellout of longtime U.S. ally Chiang Kai-shek.

The Communist sweep across China in late 1948 and in 1949 that established Mao Tse-tung’s People’s Republic of China was made possible by the United States.

At the end of World War II, Chiang Kai-shek’s recognized National Government had a five to one superiority over the Communist troops, virtually all the heavy military equipment in China, and the only air force there.

But as a result of US policies executed by General George C. Marshall and Communist-infiltrated Far East sections of the U.S. State Department, in December, 1949, Chiang Kai-shek was forced to move his government to the island of Formosa and the most populous country in the world went Communist.

Marshall not only forced Chiang Kai-shek to form a coalition government with the Communists and to integrate the Communist army with his Nationalist army, he cut off American military aid to the Nationalists during the period of his mission.

Professor Anthony Kubek summed up the consequences in How the Far East Was Lost this way:

Marshall’s entire mission was one of convenience to the Reds. Before he went to China, the Communists occupied a very small portion of China. Their Army numbered less than 300,000 badly equipped troops. When Marshall returned from China…the Communist-controlled areas had greatly increased. The Communist Army had grown from 300,000 badly equipped troops to an Army of over 2,000,000 relatively well-equipped soldiers.

In a full account of US support of the Communists take of China, Clarence B. Carson in his book, The Welfare State, reports how the U.S. State Department set the stage for the undermining of Chiang Kai-shek and his replacement by the Communists.

The result was that “the Nationalist armies never recovered their earlier initiative: much of the spirit went out of them. Morale was low, and the Communists went on the offensive.

“In 1947, President Truman sent General Albert Wedemeyer, an experienced China hand to China to see what could be done. Wedemeyer pointed out that the danger was imminent of a Communist victory, and that such a victory would place China in the Soviet orbit. He recommended extensive aid to the Chinese Nationalists.

His report was not made public until after the Nationalists had been overwhelmed. Instead, Marshall maintained there was nothing the United States could do…”

And the bamboo curtain fell... behind which 65 million people died.

What we're talking about here is massive intentional lying by the U.S. government to its people. It has caused the deaths of millions. And the loss of freedom for millions more (now to include the American people).

When Americans turned over the management of their country to the people who printed their money, their medium of exchange by fiat, the world headed rapidly for expansion of banker-executed socialism and slavery. With the lies literally wall to wall coming from the U.S. government, the Federa Reserve still refuses to reveal to the Congress where the trillions it disperses are headed.

To miss the George Marshall-Mao connection is to miss the EU-Kiev connection and the dominating presence of the Bolshevik bankers emanating from London and New York.

First there was the Opium Wars, where the West subjugated China (mainly Britain, some help from France and US).

Then there were the Boxer Rebellions, where peasants were brainwashed with nationalistic fervor and then slaughtered.

Then there was the assistance to Mao, to help the Commies win.

Then there was Nixon opening China to trade!  I really wonder how much of this they are taught in China (AFAIK they are taught fuck all about the Opium Wars, for one).

They are well aware of the Opium Wars. They trust Westerners like they trust the Japanese. They never forget. China is about China and all outsiders can get fucked, Russia included. Russia gets a pass from their energy holdings.

With help from Stalin,  Marshall was carrying out the mission designed by the interests of Morgan and Rockefeller at the time,  a plan calling for two independent China divided along Yangtze. Both Chiang and Mao rejected the plan. After having wasted nearly $2 billion in supporting Chiang's civil war, Washington determined to stop the military and financial support because the US intelligence had clearly understood the rampant corruption at every level of Chiang's government and had concluded Chiang had already lost the war in 1948. The American Embassy was the only embassy that didn't relocate from Nanking to Canton before Mao moved his troops into the city. The US ambassador stayed in Nanking per instructions from Washington, and kept trying to establish formal diplomatic ties with the new government in Peking. However,  Mao rejected Washington's olive branch and forced him out of the country in 1950 because Mao had declared Uncle Sam was the biggest enemy of the new Chinese state.

Take your pick; Mao and Marxist communist atheism or Chiang and traditional Confucian and Christian values. Just as in China, and now in America with its Communist infiltration of the government, as Christian values are destroyed by the socialists and the atheists, paganism and loss of freedom are filling the void.

Spartacus Educational points out that under Chiang Kai-shek’s China “major financial reforms were carried out and the education system and the road transport were both improved. Chiang also established the New Life Movement in 1934 which reasserted traditional Confucian values to combat communist ideas.”

Dr. TU Yichao in a speech delivered September 25, 2013, about the Rev. Billy Graham, American Evangelicals and Sino-American Relations, based on his research at Fudan University, said.

“Christianity is a very special issue in the past and present Sino-U.S. relations.”

Said  Yichao:

“With the People's Republic of China (PRC) established in 1949, foreign missionaries were expelled as ‘running dogs of imperialism.’ Soon after missionary schools, hospitals, orphanages, retreat centers, publishing houses, newspapers, and other Christian institutions were forced to merge into state-controlled organizations. While some Protestant missionaries, especially some mainline missionaries, were sympathetic with the ideals and goals of the new Marxist government, many shared Graham's religious and political inclinations: an atheistic government would be no friend of the church. Most became strong opponents of Red China while many supported the KMT government in Taiwan that had been the patron of missionaries in mainland China until 1949. After these missionaries were expelled from China, some went on to serve in Taiwan or in other Asian countries. In contrast to the mainland, missionary work flourished in Taiwan after 1949…

“In the 1950s and early 1960s, Billy Graham was an opponent of Red China and a supporter of the KMT government in Taiwan. As late as 1965 Graham called the People's Republic of China “the most dangerous enemy of freedom in the world.” Meanwhile, KMT regime got support from most American Christians. Both Chiang Kai-shek and his wife received honorary degrees from Bob Jones University in 1952…

“In Dec 29, 1952, as a rising young evangelist Billy Graham saw Chiang Kai-shek in Taipei and he told a American correspondent that he was “very greatly impressed by Chiang Kai-shek's spiritual quality” and thought U.S. “should give him and the people of free China every help possible.”

“In the 1950s Graham and other American evangelicals hoped and prayed that the KMT government might reassert control of the Mainland, once again opening China to missionary work...

“On April 16, 1975, Billy Graham gave the sermon at a memorial service for Chiang Kai-shek in Washington's National Cathedral. In October the same year, a five-day Billy Graham crusade was held in Taipei with strong official support and Madame Chiang seated in the chair of honor..."

JR,

i absolutely agree.  also put stalin in the mix.  stalin completely checked Mao in korea.  right up until the actual invasion, stalin led Mao to believe they were in it together.  stalin reneged @ the last minute leaving Mao fully commited---his son sent in the advance troops.  Mao wanted to head toward Tibet and instead was bogged down in korea.  the chinese and russians roots are deeply intertwined.  Usa i suspect were fully aware of stalin's plans regarding korea and mao.  churchill often suspected the american and stalin connection.  you are right regarding the current situation.  many different things at play, and few of them obvious.
