The Taming Of Deluded 'Conspiracy Theorists'

Valiant Knight of Government-Approved Information Rides to the Rescue

Look who is warning us again about the great harm conspiracy theories are doing to the minds of impressionable citizens everywhere: Cass Sunstein has emerged at Bloomberg, to once again plead for 'correction' of the many conspiracy theories that are disseminated on that pesky new medium, the intertubes, seemingly without inhibition. Contrary to the infamous paper in which he described how to precisely combat the spreading of false information that lacks the government's seal of approval, he doesn't list his favored censorship and disinformation techniques outright this time, but it is certainly implied that 'something must be done'.

With regard to conspiracy theories, there is a long history of dangerous thought entering the minds of deluded citizens. There were people who long doubted the official version of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, or those who believed that the government's minions were capable of thinking up other 'false flag' activities such as 'Operation Northwoods', or the poor confused souls who argued that Iraq's 'weapons of mass destruction' were a trumped-up pretext for war based on thoroughly politicized intelligence, or the mean-spirited traitors who charged that the US military killed a Reuter journalist and his helpers in Iraq and then covered it up, or the completely delusional paranoiacs who asserted for many years that the NSA was literally recording everything. Next they're going to say that the official version of the WTC attack lacks credibility, in spite of its enshrinement as unassailable truth following the government's decision to investigate itself!

We incidentally even know of certain people who routinely assert that the scientific and utterly wertfrei monetary policy enacted by well-meaning central banks is harmful and favors certain groups in society over others! Surely such highly dangerous attempts to foment popular dissent need to be properly suppressed before they irreparably disturb the social harmony of the Collective.

Also, consider for a moment the honest and well-intentioned politicians and bureaucrats who advanced the schemes listed above in the national interest. It was only their self-less concern for our well-being that drove them to make a tiny mistake here or there. By accusing them of nefarious motives, the conspiracy theorists have undoubtedly deeply hurt their feelings. It is an outrage crying out for rectification.

What 'Needs to Be Done'

Cass Sunstein certainly knows what needs to be done to ensure that the geistige Volksgesundheit is maintained. The intertubes simply must be corralled to reduce the great harm all this conspiracy theorizing inflicts. In his 2008 paper 'Conspiracy Theories' written with Adrian Vermeule, he proposed the following eminently reasonable measures:

Government might ban conspiracy theorizing.

Government might impose some kind of tax, financial or otherwise, on those who disseminate such theories.

Government might itself engage in counter-speech, marshaling arguments to discredit conspiracy theories.

Government might formally hire credible private parties to engage in counter-speech.

Government might engage in informal communication with such parties, encouraging them to help."

Surely number (1) would be most effective and help to conserve resources. But where would be the fun in that? Intellectual combat with the deluded masses is surely more satisfying. We are therefore informed that:

However, the authors advocate that each "instrument has a distinctive set of potential effects, or costs and benefits, and each will have a place under imaginable conditions. However, our main policy idea is that government should engage in cognitive infiltration of the groups that produce conspiracy theories, which involves a mix of (3), (4) and (5)”

We should be grateful that these social engineers are thinking up such excellent ways of protecting the already overloaded neural circuits of the citizenry. Incidentally, it seems actually quite possible that the NSA has heard about these useful proposals, considering that its agents “Infiltrate the Internet to Manipulate, Deceive, and Destroy Reputations” according to Glenn Greenwald. See, we are already protected!

As a result, have every reason to feel all 'snuggly and secure', as Mark Fiore points out in the video below, which nicely summarizes why we have absolutely nothing to fear.

Snuggly and secure! You have nothing to fear, citizen! As long as you have nothing to hide, are not blowing any whistles you treasonous leaker, or exhibit undue interest in the Bill of Rights.

Techniques of the Demagogue

Sunstein's recent Bloomberg article is quite interesting though in that it nicely demonstrates the demagogic techniques employed in advancing statist interests. One can immediately see that he has learned a few lessons from the push-back he received the first time around. As noted above, he refrains this time from telling us in detail what government should actually do in order to 'reduce the harm from conspiracy theories'.

He merely asserts that such harm exists, encouraging readers to think about how it might be reduced. He mentions in closing that 'we' need to “persuade the conspiracy theorists to find their way around to the truth”, but he doesn't say how.

Whenever an author invokes 'us', asserting that 'we' must do this or that, what he really means is actually that the government's apparatus of coercion and compulsion must be set into motion to attain certain goals the author approves of. In recent weeks we have e.g. heard that 'we' must bail out the Ukraine financially, or that 'we' must punish Mr. Putin and his henchmen with sanctions, but this is of course not a call to voluntarily engage in these activities. It is simply an announcement, informing us that those steering the government apparatus will do all these things. 'We' only figure in the sense that 'we' are going to pay for it all (and certainly not voluntarily).

So when Sunstein says that 'we' must 'help' those poor deluded conspiracy theorists, he is actually saying the same things he was saying before, only in a less direct manner. It means the government must intervene.

The other technique on display is the 'straw man' technique. Discussing conspiracy theories in detail, Sunstein deliberately lists many that can either be very easily disproved, or of which it can be assumed that most readers will immediately classify them as nonsense.

At one point he tries to assure us that his approach is evenhanded by conceding that a number of conspiracy theories have later turned out to be the truth, but he immediately reverts to his previous condescending tone, belittling those who show an interest in investigating government misdeeds. He lists three examples: the Watergate scandal, the CIA's MK Ultra program, and the fact that 'aliens have really landed in Roswell' - in other words, he only lists two examples and immediately downplays their importance by adding a plainly ridiculous third one to the list.

Degrees of Harm

It could even be conceded arguendo that Sunstein succeeds in demonstrating that harm is sometimes inflicted, as e.g. in the context of conspiracy theories surrounding vaccines (we actually don't know what these theories assert, not having delved into the subject in detail; however, the history of modern medicine certainly suggests that a great many scourges that have plagued mankind have been successfully vanquished with the help of vaccines).

So it may be true that there are a small handful of cases when belief in a conspiracy theory might actually harm those believing it. But so what?

Sunstein's proposals as formulated in his original paper (and we have no reason to believe that he has changed his opinion on these points) are infinitely more harmful. Life is never without risks, but the wrongheaded belief held by social engineers that the government must eliminate every last one of them by intervening in every nook and cranny of our lives can ultimately only end in tyranny.

The ubiquitous and all-encompassing surveillance state that has been installed to allegedly 'protect us from terrorists' is actually an excellent example of how extremely misguided these attempts to shield us from every conceivable evil are. The reality is in this case that the threat is statistically minuscule; as we have previously noted, more Americans die from drowning in their bathtubs and even from merely falling off a chairs than from terrorist attacks. And yet, no-one has proposed to spend tens of billions every year to keep tabs on the citizenry's evil furniture, at least not yet. The danger that the gathering of every last scrap of data will be abused is orders of magnitude greater than the danger emanating from terrorists.

Central bank policy is yet another example: the attempt to spare us the pain of economic busts only leads to even bigger economic catastrophes down the road. This has only recently been demonstrated when the interventions following the bursting of the technology bubble resulted in its replacement by the housing bubble. In the end, a far more painful recession than the one the initial intervention sought to mitigate resulted. The same principle will be demonstrated again when the current echo bubble bursts at some point in the future.

The Conspiracy Theory of History

Finally, it should be clear that what one might term a 'conspiracy theory of history' often comes a lot closer to the truth than the officially approved line that is taught in public schools. The one thing that should be clear to every astute observer is that governments routinely lie. They sometimes even admit it, such as JC Juncker did in his function as president of the euro group of finance ministers (this incident serves as an example of how brazen the ruling class has become in modern times; they don't even care anymore how transparent they are).

The fact that governments are lying routinely and are keeping a great many of their activities secret in allegedly 'free societies' is what provides the fertilizer for conspiracy theories. Even in the rare cases when governments tell the truth, many people are no longer inclined to believe them. Distrust of government is however not akin to a mental disease – it is rather a sign that one is alert and keeping one's eyes open. It is also a necessary and healthy approach that provides a small, but important contribution to keeping government abuses in check.

As Murray Rothbard pointed out:

“Anytime that a hard-nosed analysis is put forth of who our rulers are, of how their political and economic interests interlock, it is invariably denounced by Establishment liberals and conservatives (and even by many libertarians) as a "conspiracy theory of history," "paranoid," "economic determinist," and even "Marxist." These smear labels are applied across the board, even though such realistic analyses can be, and have been, made from any and all parts of the economic spectrum, from the John Birch Society to the Communist Party. The most common label is "conspiracy theorist," almost always leveled as a hostile epithet rather than adopted by the "conspiracy theorist" himself.

It is no wonder that usually these realistic analyses are spelled out by various "extremists" who are outside the Establishment consensus. For it is vital to the continued rule of the State apparatus that it have legitimacy and even sanctity in the eyes of the public, and it is vital to that sanctity that our politicians and bureaucrats be deemed to be disembodied spirits solely devoted to the "public good." Once let the cat out of the bag that these spirits are all too often grounded in the solid earth of advancing a set of economic interests through use of the State, and the basic mystique of government begins to collapse.”

And this, in a nutshell, is what is really behind Mr. Sunstein's concern with 'conspiracy theories'. It is all about preserving the State's perceived right to rule by letting nothing intrude on the notion that politicians and bureaucrats are 'disembodied spirits solely devoted to the public good' rather than people who pursue their own personal interests.

So I'm OK with free speech and truth being spoken as it is, anywhere, anytime. Not that I don't appreciate the role/need of relative anonymity like on zh, but I do know it doesn't really exist. If that gets me sanctioned or whatever, this is still not going to stop me. I don't buy the idea that what's said in here and similar has no effect (as some are keen to assert). Which is obviously not so on several demonstrable levels. If it had no effect then what are hysterics like Sunstein wobbling at the knees about as the psycho-stateist implementation of its' drone-mind fractures in the face of untenable dysfunction-inducing obvious contradictions and incongruities?

Oh let's double-down and manipulate, lie and illegally suppress and frighten even more!

They don't understand that the problem is them, and it will be resolved. This process will go on but they're not going to sweep-up the drone-mind again and stuff it all back under the carpet. MH-370: Authority Refuses to Deny External Autopilot took Control of Aircraft;

SEPANG: The investigation team is going through the record call made by MH370 pilot, Capt, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, from the cockpit, reportedly minutes before the flight took off.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the phone call record had been submitted to the investigation team, together with information on the cargo manifest.

Explaining further on the cargo manifest, Ahmad Jauhari said the aircraft carried small batteries, but they had been approved and up to par of safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

"They were not dangerous goods and had been packed as recommended by ICAO. We checked them several times to make sure the packing was right and were done in accordance of ICAO's guidelines," he told a daily media briefing on the search and rescue (SAR) operation at a hotel here, Friday.

Also present were Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Department of Civil Aviation Director-General Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman and the Prime Minister's special envoy to China, Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting.

Ahmad Jauhari said it was not unusual for airlines to carry such goods in the cargo, stressing that: "The goods have been flown by many airlines cargo. Airlines do this all the time, not only MAS."

Asked whether the Boeing 777-200 (MH370) was equipped with Uninterruptible Autopilot System that can prevent hijacking manually from inside, he said: "The aircraft is equipped as standard. There is nothing additional on the aircraft."

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said the investigation by international intelligence agencies on passengers and crews, including the pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah and co-pilot, Fariq Abdul Hamid came back with nothing unusual.

On the simulator found in Zaharie's house, he said: "We have forwarded the information to international parties for fast verification.

The Inspector General of Police (Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar) might be able to comment on the latest development."

Hishammuddin said they had no information on a housewife's claim that she spotted an aircraft partly submerged in the water off Andaman Islands when returning to Kuala Lumpur after a pilgrimage to Makkah on the same day it was reported missing.

The Beijing-bound Boeing 777-200ER aircraft disappeared about an hour after leaving the KL International Airport at 12.41 am on March 8.

The aircraft with 227 passengers and 12 crew on board was scheduled to arrive in Beijing at 6.30 am on the same day.

A search was mounted for the aircraft in the South China Sea but the area of the search was extended to cover a large tract west of Malaysia, including the Indian Ocean.

It was learned that the aircraft had veered off course after someone deliberately switched off the communication system on board, and it flew for seven hours after that.

The search then focused on two corridors, namely the northern corridor which stretches from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to northern Thailand, and the southern corridor, which stretches from Indonesia to southern Indian Ocean.

I have spent 30 years working on that problem in the Canadian context, where the situation is not nearly as bad as it is in the USA. However, despite the eloquent, emotional appeal in that Ted Talk, my conclusions were always the same, that "nothing can be done about that kind of paradoxical double-bind Catch 22 kind of problem."

It is easy to come up with ideal lists of things that should be done. However, given the realities of the roles of money in the political processes, and the runaway vicious spirals of the relationship between the money and political power, "expecting reform of this system is not the answer," since it ain't going to happen!

What has actually happened is the almost perfect realization of a Bizarro Mirror World, where the government is lying about almost everything important. One could pretty well throw a dart at a dart board with a word cloud of what governments are saying, and be practically guaranteed to hit something where there was a conspiracy at work making that happen, since there is almost nothing that the government is doing which is not based on legalized lies, backed by legalized violence.

The title of Cass Sunstein's article was "Everything's a Conspiracy." Due to the influence of the vicious feedbacks between the monetary system and political power, that is a FACT. There is almost nothing which is able to operate outside of the established monetary system, and that system itself is the greatest single example of the reality of conspiracies, such as has been well-documented about how the Federal Reserve Board was enacted.

I have never studied any social issue, such as from the Profit from Disease System, or the Profit from Junk Food System, and so on and so forth, where the influence of money on politics has not resulted in sets of policies which serve special interests, while screwing everyone else. In the short-term, those who benefit from the screwed up policies become more wealthy, and so, even more powerfully able to continue to fund politics, far above and beyond those who are being screwed. Since there is no political issue which is not deeply influenced by the funding of the political processes, and the monetary system itself is the most totally corrupted system there is, there is hardly anything which is not operating within a conspiracy.

I don't see any connection between facts and attitudes. This is an imaginary linkage to me. But on a more practical level and example, in science it's recognized that attitude has no valid relationship or place regarding the verity or otherwise of observational data. It is you who approached the observation with the emotional attitude that is you. I look at that same world and data and have no such emotional attitude disturb me. That's all that's going on there.

As I have run a couple of small businesses (though don't now) I will just point out that what you describe is business (making a 'profit', i.e. access to material resources and status) in a political economy. It is not impossible for people to apply themselves and succeed in business, people do it all the time in very large numbers. Now that is indeed all about attitude, mostly the refusal to accept that you will or can fail, it is a tight-rope walk where you don't look down, you just keep walking and wowing the crowd.

In the end what you describe is all just a symptom of the interior mess.

If you don't fix the interior the exterior can never get straightened-out from its distortions.

However, you insist you want to fix all exteriors, without ever examining if that is possible, through government.

It isn't.

Every human has to fix their own interior, individually, and on their own, otherwise the exterior can never sort itself out.

They may be convinced that there was manual intervention, but in fact manual intervention may have been the one thing that wasn’t involved in the incident. It may have been that the computer systems aboard the aircraft decided to commandeer the aircraft in such a way that the pilots could not retake control. It sounds insane, yes, but as a matter of fact the Boeing Airplane Company has developed and patented a system to do exactly that.

According to an article published back on 3 March 2007 in the London Evening Standard, New autopilot will make another 9/11 impossible:

Scientists at aircraft giant Boeing are testing the tamper-proof autopilot system which uses state-of-the-art computer and satellite technology.

It will be activated by the pilot flicking a simple switch or by pressure sensors fitted to the cockpit door that will respond to any excessive force as terrorists try to break into the flight deck.

Once triggered, no one on board will be able to deactivate the system. Currently, all autopilots are manually switched on and off at the discretion of pilots.

The so-called ‘uninterruptible autopilot system’ – patented secretly by Boeing in the US last week – will connect ground controllers and security services with the aircraft using radio waves and global satellite positioning systems.

You watch a video of the World Trade Center Building 7 collapse (you know the one untouched by the planes) and note:

1)The top floor falls at the rate of free fall (the same time a brick thrown off the roof would take to reach the ground)

2)The building forms a symmetrical debris pile.

What can explain such observations?

Timed demolition of explosives starting at the bottom floor and working its way up to the top, allowing each floor to collapse without impedence (momentum transfer) from the floor below slowing it down.

China has developed more secure operating software for its tens of millions of computers and is already installing it on government and military systems, hoping to make Beijing's networks impenetrable to U.S. military and intelligence agencies.

The secure operating system, known as Kylin, was disclosed to Congress during recent hearings that provided new details on how China's government is preparing to wage cyberwarfare with the United States.

"We are in the early stages of a cyber arms race and need to respond accordingly," said Kevin G. Coleman, a private security specialist who advises the government on cybersecurity. He discussed Kylin during a hearing of the U.S. China Economic and Security Review Commission on April 30.

The deployment of Kylin is significant, Mr. Coleman said, because the system has "hardened" key Chinese servers. U.S. offensive cyberwar capabilities have been focused on getting into Chinese government and military computers outfitted with less secure operating systems like those made by Microsoft Corp.

"This action also made our offensive cybercapabilities ineffective against them, given the cyberweapons were designed to be used against Linux, UNIX and Windows," he said.

A Malaysian official involved in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has contradicted public claims from the Malaysian government by saying that its military knowingly and continuously tracked the plane on radar for more than an hour after communication with ground control was severed in the early hours of March 8.

The anonymous air force official told Chinese web portal Tencent that despite initial claims that they could not be certain, the Malaysian military knew very well that the plane they were tracking on radar was flight MH370 and followed it as it climbed above the Boeing 777's approved altitude of 45,000ft and took a sharp turn to the west before descending unevenly to 23,000ft on the approach to the island of Penang. The plane then climbed back to 35,000ft and headed northwest towards the Indian Ocean, with the final reading showing it above the tiny island of Pulau Perak in the Strait of Malacca at around 2.40am.

Though they had known this all along, Malaysian authorities did not reveal this crucial information until March 15, a week after the plane's disappearance, the official said. It also meant that Malaysia knew from the beginning that the plane — if it had crashed — was likely in the Strait of Malacca region on the west side of the country as opposed to the South China Sea on the east side, where dozens of ships and aircraft from other countries searched fruitlessly for days, the official added.

The first public announcement made by Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya on Saturday morning was that the plane had remained in contact until 2:40am, but the timing was subsequently changed to 1:20am, just as communications was being handed over from Malaysian air traffic controllers to their counterparts in Vietnam.

It has since been revealed that the plane's transponder was "deliberately" switched off at 1:21am and that it had completely vanished off Malaysian civilian radar screens at roughly 1:30am. But if the official's claims are to be believed, then Malaysian authorities knew exactly where the plane was and what it was doing for another 70 minutes.

The official's revelations about Malaysia's knowledge about the flight's true last point of contact are also consistent with why Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, director-general of the Malaysia's Department of Civil Aviation, said "there are some things that I can tell you and some things that I can't" when explaining why the search was being expanded to the Strait of Malacca on March 11. In fact, the official said, Malaysia had been secretly searching that region all along.

Meanwhile, the number of countries involved in the search, as it enters its ninth day, has expanded from 14 to 25 and will take in large tracts of land crossing 11 countries as well as deep and remote areas of ocean. The new focus comes after the Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak, declared Saturday that satellite "pings" received nearly seven hours after takeoff placed flight MH370 in two possible flight corridors: one between Thailand and Kazakhstan, and another between Indonesia and the southern Indian Ocean.

Another Malaysian air force official told Tencent that flight MH370 could have flown west as far as Somalia or north past Thailand and Myanmar to the southern part of Mongolia. The chosen flight path would have been close to the borders of several countries, where radar detection is relatively weak, the official added.

Whoever among the 239 people on board that hijacked MH370 must have been very familiar with the geography near Malaysia as well the capabilities of both civilian and military radar, the official said, adding that it is common knowledge in the aviation industry that both Somalia and southern Mongolia are places that do not require government permission to perform a landing. Somalia is effectively in a state of anarchy due to civil war, while Mongolia has several secret airports providing safe landing strips for smugglers, the official added.
