German Vice Chancellor Warns 'No Alternative To Russian Gas'

'No Alternative to Russian Gas'

Even Germany's vice chancellor Sigmar Gabriel realizes that there is no alternative to Russian gas for Germany, at least not in the near future. It should be noted to this that Germany's energy policy has driven energy prices to the very edge of what the population and industry can still handle.

On the one hand, there is the vast subsidization of 'green energy', which is not only thoroughly uneconomic and blighting the landscape, but the costs of which have been off-loaded on consumers, who pay a special 'ecological fee' on top of their already far too high bills.

On the other hand, after the Fukujima accident, Germany's government quickly gave in to pressure from the Greens and decided to completely phase out nuclear energy (as if Germany were in danger of being hit by a tsunami). This is of course a completely futile gesture, as the country is surrounded by other countries brimming with nuclear reactors over which it has no control whatsoever (admittedly, even one nuclear accident would be one too many). However, this hasty step has once again made electricity more expensive.

Fracking also remains forever stuck in the 'debating stage' in Europe, with resistance organized by various NGOs growing steadily.

As Gabriel remarked:

“In the debate over Europe's dependence on Russian natural gas it is often falsely pretended that there are many other possibilities. This is incorrect.”

Moreover he warned of scaremongering and misplaced fears that Russia would stop its  deliveries, arguing that “even in the dark times of the Cold War, Russia has always fulfilled its contractual obligations.”

This insightful observation was followed by a succession of hollow phrases about how EU foreign policy must 'not be guided exclusively by economic interests'. Right. Still no alternative to Russian gas though. Tough titty, as they say. Moreover, as Gabriel rightly points out, it isn't a problem anyway.

We have come across a neat infographic published by RIA Novosti on the countries harboring large oil and gas reserves – all data are per capita and in USD terms.

Germany's future lies with Russia and always has - the Eurasian landmass is key to Germany and links to China via Russia. The Berlin-Baghdad Railway was just the start of opening up the Middle East and frightening the British as German goods entered Iraq and The Levant.

Germany burns a lot of Braunkohle but really the windmill lobby has been a lucrative deal for investors and a disaster for consumers. Once the ECJ struck down the cross-subsidisation of heavy industrial users by consumers the energy policy was dead......Europe forgets its wealth was built on cheap energy and after 1973 different countries had different responses - the UK tried credit expansion (as always) and Germany pushed energy efficiency.

Nordstream is Gerd Schroeder's baby and Poland wanted a tap off that pipeline. The problem has been Ukraine not Russia.........it is Ukraine that steals gas when it cannot pay for it......

"Russia is silent, that is not a good sign."...

Depends on your perspective and whether or not you are a Russian.  If I had to pick who will be getting the ass kicking of a lifetime that will be reminiscent of what happened to Georgia circa 2008 my money is definitely on the non-Greystone managed crowd!

just think of all those (re)construction jobs! Then interior decorating .... Long IKEA.

Besides, new borders need to be drawn. Just look at how many are asking for it.

Most of the former Iron Curtain countries, should have been placed into a neutral block, and all would have been better off. All.

Poland is built on the Silesian coalfields and they should build huge generating sets there and wheel power. As for Germany it is going to drive petrochemicals to Russia and every enegy-intensive business just as tyremaking moved to Romania.

Politicians used to be the creatures of Steel Barons like Thyssen, Krupp, Flick, Stinnes who knew what industry needed now it is academics like Merkel and teachers like Gabriel and a whole raft of lawyers who think the Green Voter being middle class, urban and swayed by sentiment rather than logic feels thrilled to take 2+ ecologically-sound long-haul flights each year to tan theuir pasty vegetarian bodies.

The stupidity of decadent Germany and Europe overall makes our forebears look like giants

(uh)  by definition,  IF the majority of (pansy) Europeans are as you state then it IS logical for Merkel and Gabriel to think that voters would be "thrilled to take 2+ ecologically-sound long-haul flights each year to tan theuir pasty vegetarian bodies".  I know I like looking at their "pasty vegetarian bodies"; beats looking at the near-food eating lard-butts.

Been burning it for 100+ yrs.

Did you think it would last forever?

Not to worry, when the middle class find they are spending more on their power bills than on food, nuclear power stations over windmills will not seem so bad.

Um, did Germany take all their nuc plants off line?    Just curious.

And how about windmills and solar power, I'm sure that's making just a whopping huge contribution to Germany's energy needs. (not)

If I was Merkel I would start meeting Germany's energy needs by lighting a bonfire of representatives of the Alliance 90/Green party.

Putin is going to keep selling all the gas any of his customers have the dough to buy. The infrastructure is in place so its e-z money.  It would be utter economic folly not to do so.  He is not a a dumb ass, like some people we know.

There are no short term immediate solutions but long term yes importing LNG will lessen the dependence. People seem to keep forgeting about Canada or the Norwegian Sea. Greenland or Iceland anyone they are only starting the exploration for oil and gas fields over there.
