An Iowa City With A Population Of 7,000 Will Receive Armored Military Vehicle

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

I’ve covered the militarization of the domestic police force on several occasions on this website. For those of you who need a refresher, I suggest reading the following:

There are Over 50,000 SWAT Team Raids Annually in America

Retired Marine Colonel to New Hampshire City Council: “We’re Building a Domestic Army”

Video of the Day – Thuggish Militarized Police Terrorize and SWAT Team Iowa Family.

Moving along to the subject of today’s absurdity, the tiny city of Washington, Iowa with a population of 7,000 and 11 police officers, will be receiving a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. Yes, they will be employing one of these in the field:

These things normally cosy $500,000, but will be given to Washington, Iowa for free under a Defense Department program that gives surplus military equipment to domestic law enforcement.

Matthew Byrd writes in the Daily Iowan that:

Sometimes the news is just so drearily awful that you have to sit back and almost appreciate the pure comedy induced by it.

Take this item from Washington, Iowa, where the local police have recently acquired an MRAP vehicle (short for Mine Resistance Ambush Protected) through a Defense Department program that donates excess vehicles originally produced for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to local police departments across the United States, including other Iowa towns such as Mason City and Storm Lake.

The MRAP weighs an impressive 49,000 pounds, stands 10-feet tall, and possesses a whopping six-wheel drive. Originally designed to resist landmines and IEDs, it sure seems like the MRAP will come in handy for the notorious war zone otherwise known as Washington County, Iowa.

If you’re having a bad day, I highly recommend watching a video produced by the Des Moines Register in which Washington police officials try to justify the possession of a vehicle it clearly has no use for. The excuses range from school shootings (which are an actual concern but an MRAP seems like overkill) to a terrorist attack happening in central Iowa (because if there’s any place that seems ripe for a high-profile terrorist attack it’s Washington, Iowa, population 7,000).

As Radley Balko, the author of the book The Rise of the Warrior Cop, an expose of the police militarization of the last decade, found, in 2006 alone the Pentagon, “distributed vehicles worth $15.4 million, aircraft worth $8.9 million, boats worth $6.7 million, weapons worth $1 million and “other” items worth $110.6 million to local police agencies.”

The effects of cops moving from handguns to assault rifles and being equipped with tanks, bazookas, and Kevlar has been twofold. First, civil liberties have absolutely been eroded, with police-brutality rates skyrocketing in last decade according to the Justice Department. Not only that, but, with the influx of military gear into local police forces, cops begin to view themselves as soldiers whose main job is combat rather than keeping the peace. How else can you explain the rise in police shootings since 9/11?

USA! USA! USA!

Keep chanting like idiots until one of these rolls up to your doorstep.

My nephew served in Iraq and he said those things are hideously expensive to maintain!  They'll bankrupt themselves trying to keep it running and like most SWAT vehicles, they'll rarely get out of the compound (err, Police Station) and that means they'll detoriate as well.

Fortunatly, those things are fuel hogs and have expensive maintenance requirements.  They're also fucking top heavy.  We'll see how long PDs run them when they get the bill for actually using them.  Oh, and fire suppression system or not, I seriously doubt they're resistant to large mass of thermite wrapped in a piece of cloth and slathered with something sticky, such as axle grease.  Get that over either the engine compartment or the driver, and it's game over.

Just FYI.

polystyrene, finely ground sand, aluminium powder and gasoline, with a kids sparkler for ignition.

The sand provides silicon dioxide, which when mixed with aluminium powder is a very cheap and readily available form of thermite. The polystyrene mixed with gasoline makes a very sticky napalm type substance, Create a mix of the 4 ingredients which is sticky and mostly solid, The thermite needs to hit 1500°C to ignite so gasoline alone won't do it. It will light a sparkler though and that will ignite thermite.

Yes. Given the amount of storage memory devloped over the past 15 years, and the amount of money invested in facial recognition software, they don't need human eyes to identify people. They can now also identify license plates, too.  Completing the array are motion, heat and light sensors. A lot of what you will see was tested at outposts in Iraq during our last scrimmage game.

You are going to be very surprised at first. Then people will relaize that at the core of all this technology is a human mind. The weak spot for all of this bullshit. The alpha and omega.

In Canada the police state is also proceeding according to plan.

30 years ago my small, Ontario town had a grand total of 2 police cars, maybe a dozen officers and a smallish police station. Now, I would estimate there are 25 police vehicles of all descriptions, more police officers than I can count and a police station so large that it dwarfs the old one.

At one time it was a rare occurence to be pulled over by the police. Now, it's so common as to hardly rate a mention.

Maybe some of these MRAPS need to start being permanently disabled while they are not in use. Though I suspect the cost of up keep will bankrupt these small little towns first that truely do not need this sort of stuff. That is what your national guard armory is for. By giving these things to Barney Fife's you are undercutting individual states national guard units by arming these local cops. It makes it that much easier for those weapons and items to fall into the wrong hands if things go south. All it takes is one group knowing what they are doing to take out Barney Fife and steal his toys and in turn multiply that into more toys. 5 guns will get you 20 plus ammo if you know what you are doing.

Does the motor pool have a lift that can handle it? Or mechanics trained to fix it? It'll be impressive in the 4th of July parade, but unless the 7,000 residents of Washington, Iowa are infected with some kind of bio-terror agent that makes them turn into atavistic, flesh-eating superhuman psychopaths just as a trainload of ordnance breaks down nearby I think Crown Vics and Glocks fit the bill just fine.

I was a tiny tot in Iowa City where my mother was getting her MFA in the early '60s. She had no car, and would often tote me around on the back or her (Raleigh, I believe) bicycle. One day it had rained, the bricks were wet, and we went down. Luckily I was unscathed (no helmet, of course).

If that happens in the coming months in this little town, at least they'll have the appropriate vehicle with which to respond to the 10-17*.

it's the continued militarization of America's law enforcement.  Like obombya said in the beginning:

http://www.redstate.com/diary/barrypopik/2010/01/12/obamas-civilian-national-security-force-just-as-strong-just-as-well-funded-as-our-military/

But it's not just him.  He's only the latest douche bag to play the puppet for the M.I.C.

This has been going on for decades...slow, creeping, tyranny.  Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke of it in his farewell address 53 years ago.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y06NSBBRtY

And the problem isn't that technology is bad...but it seems that all technology is developed by or falls into the hands of some evil mother fuckers, and the first things they want to do with it is use it against us.  They give us the small stuff that seems to make our lives better in some ways...but behind the scenes they're creating some evil big shit with the purpose to try and wipe the rest of us out with.  Or at least to control us and dominate us under their evil and violent tyranny.

Like I always say...these fuckers in control of everything are sociopaths and psychopaths.  People are so fixated on zombies these days, but I tell them that zombies aren't real.  It's the M.U.T.A.N.T.S. we have to worry about because they're very real and they're fucking insane.

Being from Iowa, I'm guessing this is a piece of the payback for Gov. Branstad's work on getting the Obamacare exchange implemented, along with his work on getting other programs (Common Core is the most recent one) through. Getting the libertarian Republicans thrown out of his party leadership is also a "plus," since we took the party from the neocons in 2012.

LOL, but in reality...

1) There are more guns than people in Iowa. Even my libtard friends have AKs.

2) There's a pretty strong drug trade. Don't wander into abandoned houses.

3) Some of the kids get wild. In Ames, there was an incident where the cops tried to bust up a rave, but the ravers beat a cop and tased him with his own taser. Now, no matter how small the incident is, it's either full riot gear or guns drawn.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD91hm57y_U

Note that the cop was told to back off the chase. Ames cops are notoriously excessive.

1033 program National Defense Authorization Act all the was back to 1997 has provided local municipalities with 165 MRAPs with outstanding requests for 731 more as of December 2013. $4.2 billion dollars worth of military equipment has been doled out to municipal police forces and rapidly prolifetating SWAT teams in rural areas. Department of Defense and Homeland Security are the only two unaudited government agencies.

"Tanks, grenade launchers, armored vehicles, and assault rifles are just a few of the itemsthat have been transferred from military control to municipal police forces. Law enforcement agencies need only to arrange and pay for shipment in order to receive the items of their choice (pdf). One particularly egregious example is found in South Carolina, where Richland County's sheriff acquired a tank with 360-degree rotating machine gun turrets. Sardonically, the vehicle has been named "the Peacemaker."http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-shank/pentagons-militarization_b_4...

Here's how surplus works:

1) Estimate that you actually need 5 MRAPs for an operation.

2) Bump the number up to 50 just to be on the safe side.

3) Collect 5% customer appreciation fee on the other 45.

4) PROFIT! (No ??? meme on this one!)
