Russia has no choice but to support Putin until they had enough and get rid of him. Putin is maybe the richest man in Russia, like the czars before him. I feel sorry for Russians who are stuck in this rut of neverending oppression. If it's not the czars, it's the communists, then it's the Putin band.
People are people. In Europe and North America, it's basically Live and let Live. All nationalities are heard from. Everyone wants an opportunity to prosper and enjoy life. If Putin can deliver that, the Russians will support him. If he can't he will be gone.
Russia needs their economy to grow. Germany is the obvious partner in all of this. A German/Russian partnership gives German firms a foot in the EU and a foot outside the EU. There is value in that.
I suspect the current activities will die down. It would not suprise me to know that Putin and Merkel, and/or Obama have a generalized understanding how all this will play out. It makes sense that markets not be roiled too much over a spat of land in the Ukraine. I suspect if the Ukrainians straighten out and fly right, no one will have a problem with them keeping the eastern part of their country. If they screw around too much, I suspect the upcoming elections will seal the deal and Putin will absorb the eastern part of the Ukraine.
Todays actions are in response to yesterdays actions. Tomorrow will be more of the same. Was the buzzing of the American destroyer a sign of weakness? Can you imagine the Americans doing that? I suspect the buzzing of the destroyer showed lack of discipline in the chain of command. That prompted today's probe to see where Putin stands. Putin is too smart to take the bait and be drawn into a serious fight at this time. I suspect there will be an internal review within Russian leadership to determine if they have the discipline to really go to war.
Depending on the path Putin takes, time is either on his side, or it is not. If he truly feels he "needs" eastern Ukraine, now is the time to take it. If this is simply a side show, it's time to move along.

When the Red Army came in they purged. Then there was the atrocious guerilla warfare of Whites Blacks Greens and Reds including plenty of massacres. Then forced collectivization, deportations, resettlements, and Holodomor. Then it was the Nazi Wehrmacht invading and again massacring and purging. Similar stories for every eastern European nation, though Ukraine got the worst of it.

Literally in last year...same block to a good hospital hub (two majors) with recent expansions.
They now have a 24-hour Subway sandwhich and a heavily used Dollar store. These have actually upsized the street corner nicely, and the hospital workers and visiting guests use these all the time now.
My suggestion going forward...live near a major hospital, and try and land an IT or Medical related job supporting the hospital. Consult or job-shop into the field.
I'm trying to angle myself that way and family members.
I'm very bullish on major hospitals going forward (and especially near major cities or large wealth hubs). Follow the money (even if its our ACA tax dollars at work).

*To deny airport to Russians, but there are other airports available to Russians and many more on Russian side of border.
*To use as as an air resupply base augmenting any ground action.
*To use in an air operation against any Russian tank deployment---air power very effective against tanks. However, more than one airfield would be required with defensive capability. Watch for more airfield takeovers.
*To use for evacuation of Kiev loyalists in case of Russian invasion and surrounding of East Ukraine.
*To use as airport for Pres. Obama to land and proclaim " Mission Accomplished "
There may be other possibilities, but Svetlansk airport takeover coinciding with Brennan visit is an escalation of tensions.
