Tanks Flying Russian Flag Enter East Ukraine City

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: UKRAINE DEFENCE MINISTRY CONFIRMS THAT SIX ARMOURED PERSONEL CARRIERS SEIZED BY PRO-RUSSIAN FORCES ON WEDNESDAY... so, defected?

The latest development in the ongoing Ukraine escalation are reports that in the aftermath of yesterday's crackdown by Ukraine special forces against "separatists" in Krematorsk and other occupied eastern cities, in an operation which involved fighter jets and helicopters, that an armored column of military vehicles flying a Russian flag and carrying dozens of heavily armed fighters motored into the city of Slavyansk early Wednesday.

Clip summarizing the situation from AP:

The WSJ adds that "it wasn't immediately clear whether the men were Russian soldiers or local militants who had gotten their hands on military vehicles." Curiously a soldier on one said the unit was part of the 25th brigade of Ukraine's airborne forces that had switched sides and was joining the pro-Russian forces, but that couldn't be immediately confirmed."

Additional photos of the Russian-flag bearing tanks:

More from the WSJ:

All of the men appeared to be wearing military uniforms without insignia, similar to the heavily armed uniformed men who have seized government building around the region.

Six vehicles took up positions in the center of the city outside the city council building, and dozens of men in fatigues, balaclava masks and carrying automatic weapons milled around. A crowd of about 200 locals gathered around the vehicles and began cheering when one of them showed off by driving in tight circles.

While it is unknown if Russia troops are actually operating in Ukraine - something we doubt as it would give the west far greater ammo in the campaign to demonize the "Russian invasion" - it appears that the next standoff between Ukraine soldiers and separatists will be violent and quite bloody, and explains why earlier today Russia's foreign minister said:

  • LAVROV SAYS UKRAINE ESSENTIALLY NO LONGER UNITARY STATE

I don't want to see it continue.

It means civil war.  There is a real anti-Russian streak in the Western Ukraine.  The west didn't build that.  The west just reinforced it with promises and money in return for the use of pipelines.

No amount of schadenfreude is worth the suffering the Ukrainian people will feel.

What does it matter that an unelected president is there for the next 30 days?  The rest of the government were elected, with only a handful temporarily filling empty positions that Yanukovich's people left behind.

In 30 days there will be new elections.  Why the rush to Civil War?  What does it accomplish that cannot be accomplished in 30 days? This is serious cause for worry.

I worry that some regions have not heard from their deputies.  It indicates those deputies are being controlled.   And there are many different factions who may be attempting the control.

I don't trust anyone involved, not the West, not Putin, not the Ukrainian government.  Just because one person in a struggle is clearly bad, does not mean the other one is good.  They both can be - and more than likely ARE - bad guys.

It is all very sad.

Temujin - Agree with you on many points on this thread but not that being a Slave will make any sort of real difference in outcome. Minorities are enslaved or killed depending on who is ruling and what led to the ruling. How did the Slavs do under Stalin? Short memory? Putin isn't Stalin (yet time will tell), he is very shrewd but don't expect me to join the Putin dick sucking competition. Think you will feel this way as you see Russian nuke heading toward your home?

Don't feel bad our American inside leaders sold us out for 30 pieces of silver so perhaps they are a shade worse than Putin.

Putin is not a liberator, he is an opportunist. But I do believe after the West's particularly the United States involvement in the Orange Revolution in 2004 we should have backed off the Bear. Who knows what secret alliances lay under the table and which direction they will go?

In 30 days there will be new elections.

Not if the civil war hots up. And this is precisely the reason the Kiev faction has launched their assault. If you are operating as part of a western sponsored coup why would you believe that the armed forces would act on your behalf and gun down their own relatives in support of your illegal acts?

What you likely would do is seek to initiate a conflict that gives you a reason to suspend all elections and therefore retain your grip on power. This also gives the west a reason to intervene. My hunch is that this gameplan was laid out by Brennan during his recent visit to Kiev. Ask yourself: "How often does the head of the CIA travel to a failed state to meet with those who conducted an illegal coup? Why would he do this?"

What is working for O, Valerie, Victoria and Brennan et al, is to provoke Putin into military intervention necessary to protect and save Ukrainian Russians from Kiev stooge 'government' military threats and attacks: our shameful incompetent leaders want war, and more of their paid provocations suggest they shall have it.

"There’s no sense talking to people who don’t want peace. It just makes them look like they are being sincere, when they’re not. Obama and Co. don’t want peace. They want regime change. They want to weaken and dismember Russia. They want to reduce Moscow’s influence over energy-dependent states in Europe by disrupting the flow of gas through Ukraine. And they want to create a justification for carrying out their imperial agenda, which means they need to make Putin look like a dangerous aggressor. The coup government’s crackdown on ethnic Russians in Donetsk and Kharkiv could lead to a Russian intervention which would provide the justification that Washington is looking for. However painful it is for Putin to watch Russian speaking Ukrainians get beaten and perhaps killed by Nazi thugs and foreign mercenaries dressed up as Ukrainian Security Forces, he should avoid sending in the troops. It’s a trap."

When it is a straight line on the drop side, they are putting serious resources into price suppression.

When it looks like a plateau followed by a cliff, followed by a lower plateau, then the suppression scheme is working.

When it looks like a plateau followed by a cliff, followed by something that looks like a heartbeat, there is serious support at the lower price level.

When it looks like uneven ground with a sharp spike downward, followed by an immediate bounce - then the suppression scheme has failed at least for the day.

Correct. Here's how it unfolded this morning in Kramatorsk:

And this is the saga the Kiev junta made up:

11:32 GMT:

The Russian flags on Ukrainian Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) were a stratagem, Kiev says. According to the acting head of the Batkivshchina Party, Sergey Sobolev, the Ukrainian military raised Russian flags on their vehicles on purpose, to fool the Donetsk region’s self-defense squads and thus be able to get into areas under the control of protesters.

Those were our military units using guerilla methods of intervention,” Sobolev said, citing the acting Defense Minister. “Very soon, in two to three hours this maneuver is going to be disclosed and you’ll understand that it was actually a breakthrough, which our units thus carried out.

After defecting, the troops traveled in armored personnel carriers together with Kremlin-backed soldiers with no military insignia to Sloviansk, which is 15 kilometers north of Kramatorsk. A video shows a tank also in the city of Kramatorsk together with the APCs.

The Nobel Prize Winner is getting the war that he could not get in Syria with all his lies about sarin.  Is it payback to Putin for stopping his war in Syria or for giving asylum to Snowden or both?

US and European support for the crackdown makes clear that their intervention in Ukraine is not motivated by concerns for Ukrainians’ democratic rights. From the outset it has been aimed at inciting a civil war in Ukraine and producing a confrontation with Russia. Having organized a fascist-led coup in Kiev, Washington, Berlin and Brussels are now denouncing the inevitable opposition of people in eastern Ukraine as a Russian plot, and using this lie to escalate the violence.

Typical of the warmongering of the West was the demand by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier that Russia distance itself “from the violent and unlawful actions of pro-Russian demonstrators.”

Standing reality on its head, NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen provocatively called on Russia to “de-escalate the crisis, to pull back its troops… to stop destabilizing the situation and make clear it does not support the violent actions of pro-Russian separatists.”

US and European officials have produced no evidence to back up their claims that Russia is orchestrating the protests in eastern Ukraine. Asked by reporters if he had evidence of Russian involvement in eastern Ukraine, Rasmussen declared: “We never… comment on intelligence, but I think from what is visible, it is very clear that Russia’s hand is deeply engaged in this.”

NATO announced they will increase their forces in the east. What the west does not realize is that Putin is transforming this into a guerrilla war, where conventional forces/military strategies don't work. It will end like Vietnam. What the west must do, is what guerrilla tactics recommend: Ensure that there is a small but easily defensible poisition that really is a thorn in the enemy's eye and which really becomes the red line. It worked in West Berlin in the '60s, in the 38 parallel in the Koreas, in Israel, in Guantanamo, in Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Anything else is doomed to fail.

One thing can be counted on, the duplicity, the moral myopia, the pretenses of US politicians and media.

A flash insurrection takes over government of Ukraine, so naturally it enjoys wide support? Would anyone be surprised if a poll were taken of support, oppose, don't support either new or old government were taken, that either of the last two options would achieve a plurality?

I'd be surprised if the current Kiev cabal had majority support if all options were open. To pretend Ukraine isn't seriously divided and the current borders make sense anymore than Yugoslavia did is just more imperialism 2.0.

Yes, let's find the most violent proxies and use private, less accountable mercenaries to continue perpetual war.

And so, it begins...

Remember, nothing is as it seems in this chess game. Ukraine is on track for a full fledged civil war and seems nothing can stop it now. This scenario will be played out before the May elections.

The Kiev Gov is in a precarious position - they know they screwed up and went too far, therefore, they only have one direction to go, complete control of the country or the people will hand them by their balls for lying. That is why they will not stop this madness and Putin, the grand chest master, will take advantage of this situation regardless the cost. So whats a few lives against such sweet strategic and political gains.

I agree that is the end result. These Ukrainian soldiers won't see it that way. In many ways, they are like the BLM twits sent to take Cliven Bundy's cattle.

These well meaning Ukrainian soldiers have changed sides. Once their paychecks stop and/or others from their unit show up, these "soldiers" will change sides again. There is no honor here. Only confusion.

Naturally these "soldiers" will say they are only doing their job.

Everyone on the Pro-Russian side expects Putin to ride in any day now. I don't expect that will happen. Putin expects discipline, not indecision and lack of resolve.

Back in 1947, congress delivered a historically noble service to the american people. The american populace was being conditioned, indeed propagandized by hollywood and its big influential players for a trotsky style communist takeover. The participants were rooted out, exposed and blacklisted, and rightfully so. Didnt matter. The grand plan was just stalled for some time. As it stands now, they have achieved their end. They are irrevocably entrenched in the political system, they own all media (we are owned), and more whitewashed forms of agitprop have been working on us for decades, and here most americans find themselves dumbed down, entertained with filth and perversion, subservient to the whims of a system that is wisking us along to a socialist state. Fast forward to my point; its so ironic that im rooting for russias success in this crisis when they are supposedly socialist and we purportedly are a democracy. something really wrong must be afoot.

"The american populace was being conditioned, indeed propagandized by hollywood and its big influential players for a trotsky style communist takeover."

This story about our history is persistent, because it is not just wrong, but completely wrong.  It's anchored in reality because the exact opposite of the truth bears a relationship to the truth.

The roots of the American people's appalling ignorance about how power works in America, about what is going on in the world and what is being done in our name were sowed deliberately by the corporate elite and their agents, of whom McCarthy was one.  And don't forget, they already owned Hollywood and the MSM, and they staffed the Boards of Trustees of all the major universities and colleges.

My Dad worked in the Television Industry from 1945 to 1948, when he quit in disgust and went to a major university to study and teach about communications. He talked about how in 1946 or 1947 a wealthy and well connected relative warned him laughingly that McCarthyism was coming.  It was about Communists, yes, but it was much, much broader and reached into every corner of American life.  The full story has stil not been told.  But its targets were:

1)  Anyone who argued that America has a predatory ruling class whose interests are in conflict with those of the people.

2)  Anyone who opposed American foreign policy of foreign intervention and threatening massive nuclear (i.e. genocidal) warfare to dominate the world.

3)  Anyone who argued for unity of the American people against that ruling class and its projects.

The purging and reordering of American institutions, thought, history, economics, language and popular music was profound.  The methods they used were truly Orwellian.

The ZH conversation is part of a great awakening of the American people from a kind of induced 60-year coma. The System that was in its hayday in 1947 is breaking down, becoming increasingly oppressive, erratic and threatening to our survival.  By good fortune, this coincides with the era of the WorldWide Web.  Yet while we are  starting to see far more clearly what is, who's who and what they're up to, we still live in our stories from the past, many of which inevitably will turn out to be myths prepared for us to induce and preserve that very comatose state.

We need to  go back and reexamine everything we thought we knew, especially from the period of 1945-1965 when the corporate elite was consolidating its world hegemony, and tease apart the reality from the brainwashing.

It's no accident that Orwell's 1984 was written in 1948.

Great post. Indeed the communist fearmongering is a great divide and conquer strategy. People forget that in socialism many of the tactics for keeping people in line involved isolation, 'that they were not socialist enough'. The easiest method, at first, was often to suggest that the other person was a capitalist. And later this became more abstract and absurd in trials questioning the socialist activism of politicians themselves. They were not conforming to the party.

McCarthyism was much the same, 'You are not capitalist enough' was its basic premise. Strangely, this also meant that 'You're not capitalist at all.' The paradox is that capitalism attempts to be an open system and many people who were accused of being communists were either too experimental, too open, or participating in a form of capitalism which appeared dangerous to the powers that be. Or perhaps some felt that the old version of capitalism had to give way to psychological and economic manipulation due to there being other spheres of competition. While this certainly had similarities to socialist show trials it was not the same in every way, and certainly did not result in communism. Instead we've grown up in this vast experimental militarised space of psychological operations and intelligence training.

It seems we have no real name for this, just general dystopia (much as many of the dystopian novels were used as manuals by the intelligence operations).

TALKING ABOUT ISRAEL, HOW ABOUT SOME PROPAGANDA FROM PRESS.TV:

An international humanitarian convoy known as “Miles of Smiles 26” has headed toward the besieged Gaza Strip to break the blockade imposed on Palestinians by the Israeli regime.

According to a government committee in charge of breaking the siege in Gaza, the human rights solidarity convoy is scheduled to reach the coastal strip on Sunday, April 20, through the Rafah crossing.

The convoy includes over 30 activists from Arab and European countries.

The deputy chairman of the committee, Aladdin al-Battah, said the convoy will be taking humanitarian aid and medical materials to hospitals in Gaza.

On January 8, the "Miles of Smiles 24" arrived in the besieged area through the Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt. Only seven of the 127 activists were allowed into Gaza.

Over the past few years, the Miles of Smiles convoy has delivered humanitarian supplies to Palestinians in the impoverished region, defying the Israeli blockade.

Since the December 2008-January 2009 war that Israel imposed on Gaza, several convoys have successfully managed to break the Israeli blockade.

The Gaza Strip has been suffering under an all-out land, aerial, and naval blockade imposed by the Israeli regime since 2007.

The siege has had a disastrous impact on the humanitarian and economic situation in the enclave, turning the territory into the world’s largest open-air prison.

Tel Aviv denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights such as freedom of movement, access to jobs that pay proper wages, adequate healthcare, and education.

I still maintain it doesn't matter to the Kissinger/Brzezinski/Wolfowitz strategy whether any of this "works" or not.  The stated objectives are not the true goals.  The goal is to create violent, bloody chaos all around the borders of Russia and China, to sap the strength of those potential rivals putting out brush fires.  The EU might be in the crosshairs, too.  Additionally, the same application of brutality on top of reserves of strategic resources, and the transshipment routes.

It's the same strategy for Banderastan/Ukraine as we've seen in Afghanistan, Iraq, planned for Iran, Libya, the Sahel region, Georgia, Chechnya, etc.  If the Kiev puppet-regime falls, that's OK too.  We've got the gold and we can use the debt as a cause for stirring up more trouble, whether or not it ever gets repaid.  The Banderastanis will do well in the Al-Quaeda role.  They're utterly vicious and adamant, and they know they will be killed if caught so they will do their worst going forward to make any stability in Ukraine impossible.

The key point right now is whether or not we come up with a good enough excuse to antagonize Russia in an ongoing way.  If not right now, we'll wait until the Pravy Sektor types commit enough atrocities as guerrillas that Russia or Russians retaliate, and then we'll be calling the Fascist terrorists "Freedom Fighters" and we'll arm, train and augment their forces for as long as possible, further bleeding Russia.  Meanwhile, we're making a very clear case to the EU as to their vulnerability, which we will further exploit.

These guys haven't made a secret of the plan over the years.  Kissinger, Brzezinski, Wolfowitz and all their acolytes are quite forthcoming when asked.  And it's their proteges running State and Defense and the alphabet-soup agencies.

I agree that it's a continuation of the US strategy of underhanded tactics and chaos, but this time it's different.  Russia has already struck a fatal blow to the dollar with its recent trade deals with China and Iran, what happens in Ukraine is mostly inconsequential.  And I think the chaos strategy in Ukraine isn't going to work very well, its citizens are too smart to be manipulated.  The US will have to run continuous mercs and special ops to keep the tensions turned up.

The US is in desperation mode, I think they're hoping that interruptions to natgas supply will force the EU and other members of NATO to act.  But they won't like how things shake out, I suspect that there are many members of NATO (Germany in particular) that are sick of EU and US bullshit and will be changing sides.  The deck of worldwide allegiances is about to be shuffled, and the US is all but guaranteed a losing hand.

What would be interesting (from a US elite point of view), figure out how to start a war between the EU & Russia and China & Japan/Korea over petrochemical resources.    4 'empires' fighting and the US committing small levels of resources (by comparison) that allows us to come in at the end and maintain an industrial base that doesn't get impacted by the fighting.  Oh AND it prevents anyone from unifying the World Island against the USA.

Hmmm .... looks like they are well on their way to getting that done.

The West can bullshit all it wants to, but I remember watching the invasion of Iraq, the tanks and personnel carriers crossing a border without checking with the Iraqi border patrol for permission first and how many died after that?

Cruise missiles flying at eye level in Baghdad also made an impression.

Say what you will, but the Russians seem to be very restrained in their so called quest to take over Ukraine.

Maybe the west can learn a lesson from what is going on here instead of ballyhooing bullshit.

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 14:39 | 4666106 general ambivalent

Not really. Russia is between the East and West both politically and geographically. While being partly in Europe it is not European. Western civilisation is very much divided along ancient lines through the transition away from Greece. While Ancient Greece remains influential through philosophy it is at the same time distancing itself from those traditions. The West is defined more by its collapse of these civilisations than their continuation (the East is much more concerned with continuation of its old civilisation, and Russia is between the two, it is uniquely Northern).

This is most clear in the divide within Christianity. Eastern Orthodox, especially Russian Orthodox, separated from Catholicism and Protestantism. In many ways this isolated Russia, and the development of its philosophy and literature illustrates this very well. Its development, while clearly European influenced in its western part, was much like a bastard son. Russia engaged with Europe but Europe never engaged with it.

This contradiction is important in much of Russian history, it is both Western and not.

12:36 GMT: Around 60 soldiers manning Ukrainian armored vehicles sent to Kramatorsk to carry out military operations against anti-government protesters have switched sides and joined the local self-defense forces, RIA Novosti reports, citing the self-defense forces.

“We’ve seen here that these are neither separatists nor terrorists, but ordinary local residents, with whom we are not going to go into battle,” one of the defecting soldiers said.

Putin now has his land path to rich Crimean oil and ports and the rest of the Ukraine (which has nothing to offer) will be abandoned to starve a la Stalin progroms of the 1930's. Serious miscalculation by the West. Ukraines don't appear to be in a hurry to start killing each other on orders from a coup/putsch installed government. Love how MSM calls them "transitional government". Transitional my arse!

But of course?

What were you expecting from people with a soul?

Just ask yourselves if the ladies and gents in the U.S. Armed Forces will do the same when the time comes in our own Country, or take the salary increase instead???

Artificial intelligence cannot compute deception.

Machines cannot lie like humans.

This is their weakness.

The Armed Rebellion on a Nevada Cattle Ranch Could Be Just the Start

Go Ukraine. Go Nevada.

Hopefully the entire Ukrainian army will defect...then they, together with the Russian army, will go to Kiev, and remove those zio-backed fags from office.

Slovyansk

Ukraine's 'Baghdad Bob' comes forth - these are ukranian troops using Trojan Horse tactics to get into Slovyansk.

Ukraine ministry of defense, in no mood to jest, confirms take over of the APVs. However, another source claims that Ministry denies.

- It does appear to be a capture of the APVs, not a defection, though it could have been a mixure. Occured in... Kramotorsk (already supposedly captured by Ukraine military)

- Over 300 of Ukranian soldiers and additional APVs sent to Slavyansk lay down arms and go home, some defect. If you recall the total infantry force was about 500 men.

BONUS - video of the APC's showing off. Roads Repair Depo will not be happy

Ukraine

- Odessa federalists have declared creation of a [to be federal] Odessa Republic.

- Donetsk sets May 11 for a referendum on creation of a Donetsk Republic and whether it should join Russia or Ukraine.

- in Russian speaking blogosphere massive defections of the Elite Infantry Units are reported

Outside Ukraine

Transnistria (a wanna be breakaway from Moldovia) is asking to join Russia

CAUTION please DO NOT take these articles for granted, some may come out to be Fog of War.

These are the news articles that are not easily available in English world from Russian and Ukranian sources. I don't make them. Neither do I claim them as true.

I just head a BBC radio report on this incident. I won't waste your time repeating it. It is enough to say it is a total manufactured lie. If I ever happened to meet someone at a function or party and they say they work for the BBC, I think I will punk their fucking lights out for being war mongering fucking liars. It would feel so good to deck the liar cunt.
