De-Escalation Off: US Deploys Troops To Poland

Tyler Durden's picture

So what part of "All sides must refrain from any violence, intimidation or provocative actions," did the US not understand when they decided that deploying troops to Poland was in keeping with the four-party deal? As WaPo reports, Poland and the United States will announce next week the deployment of U.S. ground forces to Poland as part of an expansion of NATO presence in Central and Eastern Europe in response to events in Ukraine.

Via The Washington Post,

Poland and the United States will announce next week the deployment of U.S. ground forces to Poland as part of an expansion of NATO presence in Central and Eastern Europe in response to events in Ukraine.

That was the word from Poland’s defense minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, who visited The Post Friday after meeting with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon on Thursday.

Siemoniak said the decision has been made on a political level and that military planners are working out details.

There will also be intensified cooperation in air defense, special forces, cyberdefense and other areas. Poland will play a leading regional role, “under U.S. patronage,” he said.

So is that an escalation? or a de-escalation? or is it different when the US moves troops towards another nation's borders?

As a reminder, we noted in December, Russia's placement of tactical nuclear-capable weapons near the Polish border which at the time sent a very clear message of escalation (despite the, at the time, lack of New Cold War headlines). We wrote at the time,

Russia quietly has come through on its threat issued in April 2012, when it warned it would deploy Iskander missiles that could target US missile defense systems in Poland. From RIA at the time:

Moscow reiterated on Tuesday it may deploy Iskander theater ballistic missiles in the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad that will be capable of effectively engaging elements of the U.S. missile defense system in Poland.

NATO members agreed to create a missile shield over Europe to protect it against ballistic missiles launched by so-called rogue states, for example Iran and North Korea, at a summit in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2010.

The missile defense system in Poland does not jeopardize Russia’s nuclear forces, Army General Nikolai Makarov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, said.

“However, if it is modernized…it could affect our nuclear capability and in that case a political decision may be made to deploy Iskander systems in the Kaliningrad region,” he said in an interview with RT television.

But that will be a political decision,” he stressed. “So far there is no such need.”

Looks like a little over a year later, the "political decision" was taken as the need is there. But why does Russia need to send a very clear message of escalation at a time when the Cold War is long over, when globalization and free trade, promote game theoretic world peace (or "piece" as the Obama administration wouldsay), oh, and when Russia quietly has decided to reestablish the former USSR starting with the Ukraine.

We'll leave the rhetorical question logically unanswered.

Learn your history to get a good grasp of what the ultimate goal is:

In 1949, the prospect of further Communist expansion prompted the United States and 11 other Western nations to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Soviet Union and its affiliated Communist nations in Eastern Europe founded a rival alliance, the Warsaw Pact, in 1955. The alignment of nearly every European nation into one of the two opposing camps formalized the political division of the European continent that had taken place since World War II (1939-45). This alignment provided the framework for the military standoff that continued throughout the Cold War (1945-91).
NATO continued its existence beyond the Cold War era and gained new member nations in Eastern Europe during the late 1990s. That development was not well received by leaders of the Russian Federation and became a source of post-Cold War tension between the East and the West.
Warsaw Pact members: Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Soviet Union, Albania.

Guess which one is the only country left?  After Ukraine (part of Russia at the time), they will surely attack Russia.  That will be the end of the Warsaw Pact and Nato can finally claim victory.
Why go after Russia?  China and North Korea were not members of the Warsaw Pact.

You are absolutely right.  This has been going on for the past 500 years (or longer?).  I am reading a book about the Medici banking family (Florence, 15th. century Renaissance in Italy) and whenever their little Banking empire was under threat they started a war, either against allies or enemies - it didn't matter, because they could not only protect their interests, they also could issue new, huge debt to either side (often they provided financial "aid" to both sides, therefore profiting no matter who won, they even didn't care who would win).

Classic hedging strategy!

It is starting to look like Ukraine is moving towards a civil war. What is happening in Ukraine and the unrest in many areas in the world brings into focus the many conflicts that develop when a region decides to change governments often outside the recognized democratic system of voting. Lets hope Obama does not get us or NATO further involved in the middle of this!  More about the issue of borders and the ugly spill back that can occur in the article below.

A Ukrainian civil war is the USA fallback position.
Not quite as good as a puppet state with NATO on Russia's
doorstep, also depriving them of their only warm water port,
but it will work in stopping Europe joining a eurasian trade bloc.I feel sorry for the Ukrainian people at this point, they
were going to be shafted either way.
I'm not even sure a nuclear exchange is avoidable anymore.

Thats right, a threat to the US global hegemony by Russia has started this. The response though by the US is something out of a school yard, rather than fight through trade, competition, technology, and innoviation to be the global leader to keep the reserve status alive, they defect to bullying and threats.

Truely pathetic, and although i doubt Russia is no saint, i have already witnessed the policies the US has for there own people:-

  • Totalitarion police state
  • Outsourcing the entire middle class to asia for profit to the 1%
  • NSA Global spying
  • GMO hegemony
  • Millions of homeless on food stamps
  • Shit healthcare
  • Energy policies that a destroying water for consumption
  • Crazy monetary policies which destroy savers and pensioners

i could go on and on, who wants a one world government controlled by criminals in the US Empire when they are inacapable of ruling there own country.

Putin and the East are fed up of this bullshit and hegemony and they are making a stand, i dont blame then, but the consequences could be huge for all of us.

Build an honest morality and let the system show ordinary people the dangers of the tribe and their mechanisms, do it tastefully, no need for lampshades and soap. Maybe some of the tribes top movers can find themselves in unfortunate circumstances. Keep your nuclear defensive capabilities well within the realm of MAD so they dear not invade, stay internally strong, line up successors to Putin, and wait. It will work itself out. America will have to clean up her house and become a world citizen and not the tribes useful idiot bully.

I am sorry but did I miss the vote in Congress on this?  So Obama follows Bush et all and leads us into another war without Congressional approval.

The Reason US troops are going to Poland is because they can.

Where do BRIC stand in all of this? There was all this talk of replacing the USD with something. Russia is stepping up to the plate and Brazil, India, and China are suspiciously silent.

If BRIC truly wants to cause the world to question the use of the USD, now is the time. Ukraine is the place.

What you hear from BRIC is "crickets".

So... has a deal been arranged to keep Brazil, India, and China quiet? Has money talked and Russia now finds itself alone? Do Brazil, India and China expect Russia to do the heavy lifting alone? Do Brazil, India and China plan to step in and pick up the pieces?

Watch Germany. I expect Russia is talking to Germany and the US is following the German lead on this. After all, this is a European concern.

Why stop the USA from over exerting itself all over the world in a time of fiscal problems.  You want your enemy out there making a fool of itself etc.  Just think of how all the leaked conversations of events on the ground, have damaged US prestige around the world.  Everyone now has had a documented account of the USA overthrowing a democratic regime while threatening it if it fought back against the radicals and then calling the coup a pro democracy movement.  That very same movement that is calling for violence against its own people by sending in the military.

Let's admit what we all know... Talk is Cheap. Look for Pro-Action and Re-Action.

Putin has Russia in a very good position. With that, you think he would gain something of a chorus of like-minded nations. After all, you said the US has damaged it's prestige around the world. Obama is the biggest disaster of a President that the USA has ever had.

Nations are sitting on a fence for reasons of self-interest. There is no mystery in that. What would Russia need to do get those fence sitters to side with Russia? I expect the nations of the world want Putin to steer Russia so it is more like the USA. The USA has lost a lot of trust under the presidency of Obama. Can Russia gain a lot of trust under Putin?

The world wants to see Russia's plan for the future. With that in mind, I don't think the smart play is to move militarily.

The smart move is to let Ukraine play out and let internal Ukrainian politics and their competing self-interests swamp common sense. Look how stupid Tymoshenko handled things. We all should agree there is no future for her and her ilk in Ukrainian leadership. In any true democratic nation, she would be in jail. If the Ukraine turns to Tymoshenko, the world should wash their hands and let the eastern part of the Ukraine decide their future democratically.

The strength of the USA is told in the old adage about the coolie and the rickshaw. Citizens of Imperial powers will ride a rickshaw and display regal splendor. Odds are an American (or Australian) will be pulling the rickshaw with the coolie in the back. The American (or Australian) would want to know what it is like to be a coolie. A right wing American would be contemplating franchise opportunities while a left wing American would be considering possiblities of union membership.

Why Poland would have anything to do with the U.S. or any other major power is beyond me. Poland was absolutely screwed and left to hang in the breeze before, during and after WWII by all the major players.

I listened to Obama talking about the deal and how it was up to Russia, he sounded disappointed. I guess every president needs a good war and a decent body count to define his presidency. I suspect this deal had a lot more to do with Europe and Russia than with the US which appears always happy to spill other countries blood. The sending of additional troops to Poland in response to the Ukraine crisis will of course have to be cancelled in order for the US to uphhold its part of the deal.

Great News for Germany. All the US and UK troops and spooks are now leaving Germany and do move to Poland, together with their nuclear, biological nd chemical arsenal.

Just as it was the case when the Russians left East Germany, the Germans are going to pay the all the moving costs including building new barracks and housing for the US troops in Poland.

This is how it should have been the whole time already. Poland is then savely protected from the Russian and German imperialist and the US troops are there where they like it most. Deep in the rural hinterland of Poland close to the Wolfsschanze, Maybe the Wolfsschanze can be reactivated. Im sure the Germans are willing to assist.

The first wave of US troops left Germany when the first Gulf war started. Now with WWIII on the horizon the rest is moving out. Lucky Germany - poor Poland.  Soon the bulk of the trrops is leaving Afghanistan too moving to Romania which is neighboring Ukraine. Then the new Iron Curtain is completed shielding Western Europe from the Russkies and the Mongol hordes which want the establish a Eurasian business zone spanning from Vladivostok to Euroland, including India and China. This has to be stopped.

Very clever, that Vlad fellow.

Every time he speaks the USA insanely responds on a manner that punches a billion dollar hole in the federal budget, a cost similar to twenty F-16s or a couple of Freedom class ships.

All he has to do to maintain a continuous string of victories is keep flexing his (many) muscles.

Mess with the Russians to create a mess. Obama should go back to what he does well, community organizing.

In 1939 Poland smuggled their gold (aprox. 70t) out to London where it has been stored to protect it from the Nazis and later, the communists. Recently they asked for it to be returned.

Of course, this could all just be a coincidence.
