This Means War: US To Target Putin's Personal $40 Billion Stash

Tyler Durden's picture

While the White House has continually threatened further sanctions against Russia for non-de-escalation (even as it un-de-escalates itself), the specifics of the additional sanctions have been sparse. German CEO warnings over blowback from economic sanctions... the "nonsense" of replacing Russian gas with US gas... the Russian warnings of "interdependence" and "boomerangs"... all reduce the West's arsenal of financial sanctions. But, as The Times of London reports, perhaps the US has found a crucial pain point for Putin - a sanctions regime that would target Putin's personal wealth, which includes a reported $40 billion stashed in Swiss bank accounts.

As The Hill reports,

The White House on Friday refused to comment on reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin's personal wealth could be targeted if the West were to move ahead with additional sanctions over Ukraine.

"I'm not going to get into foreshadowing particular individuals or entities that the United States may target," national security adviser Susan Rice told reporters at the White House. "But let me just say we've been clear that there are additional individuals, officials, close associates of senior leadership, oligarchs and those entities that they are associated with that remain very much potential targets of additional sanctions."

...

The Times of London reported Friday that the U.S. was preparing a sanctions regime that would target Putin's personal wealth, which includes a reported $40 billion stashed in Swiss bank accounts.

Putin's actual holdings are a tightly held secret, and the extent of his holdings are difficult to estimate. But a threat of trying to freeze the Russian president's personal assets could have played a role in a deal brokered Thursday by foreign ministers from the U.S., Ukraine, Russia and European Union.

Perhaps it is worth remembering Putin's response from last week's Q&A...

Putin was asked why the US can do whatever it wants and no one punishes them, while attempts are being made to punish Russia.

“The US is certainly one of the world’s leaders. At some point it seemed that it was the only leader and a uni-polar system was in place. Today it appears that is not the case. Everything in the world is interdependent and once you try to punish someone, in the end you will cut off your nose to spite your face,” he said.

Though we are sure Obama and his team have considered all the intended and unintended consequences of any such actions.

When they killed the rule of law, I was basically done with them.

We, ladies & gentlemen, have arrived at a place where government can be caught red handed running guns to Mexico and no one goes to jail, yet they lock Joe Sixpack up daily across the nation for the very same thing. Arrived at a place, where our consent to be governed is contorted (by them) into spying on our every communication and prying into our bank accounts (which I freely admit in public now, I have and maintain, forty bucks in on average and keep it that way for a reason...fuck em). A place where Jon fucking Corzine (of all people) is a free man and yet a common thief (doing the same thing thrice) is locked up for life.

We've finally gotten to the place where THEY tell you what you're at liberty to do or say or read or think or buy or believe...you must conform, you must reform yourself, you are not an individual you see, you are the property of the state, of the idiot masses as well and if you don't...you're a razzzist or a terrrrist or a malcontent...possibly dangerous, someone to watch carefully.

Yeah, I'd say I'm done trying to deal with people who think I must bend my wants & desires to them, when it costs them nothing and they lose zero liberty as a result of my actions.

I've come to realize some people just can't handle freedom & liberty...and therefore I can no longer deal with them or "their laws".

+1 with a bullet my friend

Many of the libertards mistake my support of a raising of the minimum wage through a negative income tax and other measures to help people as statist.  Total cognitive dissonance.  When you fight a battle you use the weapons at hand.  Outside of trying to get the corpratists in Washington to give SOME redress to the working class what weapon do we have?  The libertards freely admit the corpratocracy has destroyed small business opportunity.  At this point (unless it's Rand Paul) I'll take a populist Democrat like Kucinich over a statist GOPer everyday and 13 times on Easter!

The desire of these libertarian wannabe's to join "The Big Club" is laughable and embarrassing.  Most of these keyboard commandos have never ran a business nor faced the grinding journey out of institutional poverty.  I've done both.  And I'll tell you I've got a hell of a lot more sympathy for the working class who've been under .gov boot since 1980 than my fellow business owners who often rail against them.

The Russian Oligarchs were all in the right place at the right time , taking the righjt risks. That is how they became rich overnight. Putin was Yeltsins pick to take the helm. The oligarchs supported him. It was the oligarchs that were getting greedy and stripping assets and making deals with western scum. Putin stood up and put an end to it. And if you watched the video I posted, you would see that he did at grave risk of losing his life.

Putin stopped the asset stripping. Sure , he got rich in the process but his policies directly revalued the Ruble higher. His policies put the Russian governments books in balance so that they could keep taxes low in the country.

By what metric has Putins policies been bad for the Russian people ?  Show me one... Just one

"Sure , he got rich in the process but his policies directly revalued the Ruble higher."

As the resident authority in confirming Putin's wealth, he got rich by doing what, exactly?

I'll tell you right now, the oligarchs always had control of Russia's wealth. Oligarchs don't give a flying fuck about being defined as communists or socialists or nationalists or capitalists. That is the bone for the dogs underneath the table to fight over while they laugh and bet on the outcome of the show.

So, you really don't have a problem with him enriching himself to the level of an oligarch simply because it was within his power to do it? No ethical or moral concerns of someone doing that, at all?

Voucher privatization is a privatization method where citizens are given or can inexpensively buy a book of vouchers that represent potential shares in any state-owned company. Voucher privatization has mainly been used in the early to mid-1990s in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe - countries such as Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Czechoslovakia.

A great deal of assets did fall into private ownership remarkably quickly and worked to provide some basis for market competition. Voucher privatization took place between 1992-1994 and roughly 98 percent of the population participated. The vouchers, each corresponding to a share in the national wealth, were distributed equally among the population, including minors. They could be exchanged for shares in the enterprises to be privatized. Because most people were not well-informed about the nature of the program or were very poor, they were quick to sell their vouchers for money, unprepared or unwilling to invest. Some Russain people got Gazprom vouchers and still have them to this day.

These billionaires were buying up peoples vouchers and securing external financing for industry. They were willing to invest and take the risk. Its called capitalism.

Good observasion.  It would probably be very hard to delineate homogenous NWOs.  It's like there is one big team (like say management at a big corporation).  It breaks down by title and department and lord knows how they all interact.  It's not any kind of insane conspiracy.  It's just the fruition of human nature (power and money hungry rise to the top).

Walter Block on Lew Rockwell today, very smart -

“How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin issued a warning against the BLM for violating the homesteading rights of Cliven Bundy? How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin boycotted Nevada Senator Harry Reid for castigating as ‘terrorists’ those who rose to the defense of Cliven Bundy? How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin placed a few Russian warships off the coast of California in case their help was needed in defending Cliven Bundy’s land rights? How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin froze Barack Obama’s financial resources in Russia? How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin shipped a few hundred head of cattle to Cliven Bundy to make up for those destroyed by the BLM? How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin threatened to go to war with the U.S. over its miserable treatment of Cliven Bundy? How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin actually landed Russian troops in Canada or Mexico in order the ‘send a message’ to Americans? How would people in the United States feel if Vladimir Putin set himself up as the protector of the tortoise, many of which have been killed by the BLM.”

I do not know why this set of remarks gets so many upvotes.

This American would love to see all of O'bama assets in Russia confiscated, would be real happy to see Harry Reid actually called out as the fraud he is.

I've got no problem with anyone shipping cattle to replace those thoughtlessly destroyed.

As to the rest, are we to make equivalency between voting residents of Crimea and turtles?

As to warships, I'm sure everyone has subs posted everywhere, and they all know, about each other, exactly where and how many.

I just don't get it.

Unfortunately, Zero-Hedge readers do not understand that Putin is a low-life gangster and a thief.  Russia's zionist-controlled oligarchy put Putin in his chair because he is utterly corrupt and greedy.

Putin hates and, at the same time, is  afraid of Russian Slavic people. This is why his children live outside of Russia. This is why he keeps most of his money outside of Russia. He is very much like Mubarak of Egypt who also was a zionist-controlled Egyptian dictator.

This Ukrainian fight is not about money for Putin but rather about his own survival because Ukrainian nationalists (do not mix them up with Zionist Junta in Kiev) want to be united with Russian people and drive Zionist-controlled mafia out of Russia and Ukraine.

Well, its a fool's dream. No government anywhere gives a flying fuck at a rolling donut about Cliven Bundy, his ranch, his cattle or his rights. Certainly not the barebreasted bullshit artist who runs Russia. The only people who give a fuck about Cliven Bundy's rights are those of us who understand what's at stake when the BLM and the entire Dept. of the Interior become the hand that does the bidding of the criminals running the government. It used to be that we had some insurance against petty tyranny that was elected to high office-the bureaucracy didn't change as fast as the prez and his goons in the Capitol. Bush changed all that when he fired all the lawyers and judges and stacked the courts against any valid interpretations of the Constitution. Vast numbers of law-abiding bureaucrats were put on the street during the Bush-Cheney years, replaced by neocons and apparatchiks whose job is to destroy the US from within.

It was not Putin or any member of any government that rode to the Bundy ranch. It was armed citizens. We are the only ones who give a damn.

That's what I've been screamin', Nihilist.  I teach lots of Russian students and they all say that Putin is one of the richest men in the world, perhaps the richest man in Russia.  They know that - whether they like him or not - he is both very powerful and very corrupt.

So, while I completely agree with the sentiment that the US should not be meddling in the Ukraine, it's funny to see so many here and in similar alternative media sites talking as if Putin was any more reasonable than TBTB in the west.  He's no different.  If there are any doubts about that, just ask the Chechens or Anna Politkovskaya, the independent Russian journalist murdered on Putin's birthday.

No hard feelings to anyone who sees it differently, but personally, I'm not up for a lap on the rah-rah Putin bandwagon.

An unlikely scenario.  He owns most of Russia, from Gazprom on down.

I would be afraid if MSM will start to like Putin.

40 B in dollars in Swiss banks? Do they think we are stupid? If he is really rich, swiss dollar accounts will be the last place for his money.

Actually he is much more rich than that, he does not need any money at all.
He is first person in Russia, this is galactic ways above paper fortunes of western politicos and bankers.

But when zios use this money card, you can be sure, that they are in terminal status.

So far it's been a lot of talk and little action from the US; and a lot of action and a little talk from Putin. I see no reason for this trend to change. The US can run it's mouth all it wants. The reason a bitch runs his mouth is because that's all he can do.

It's even harder to believe the Swiss would go along with any attempt to freeze his account if it exists.  Every despot in the world would withdraw their money as the Swiss banking system could not be trusted.  Somehow I don't think the Swiss would let that happen.

I am sure we only have a decent share of those billions, Putin is an intelligent man.

If this scenario realizes, I can certainly foresee tremendous pressure as well as threaths from the US on our government, however I can't see them folding on this one. Most of the threaths would materialize in impediments to our export industries. That would not be enough, and probably attackable under the WTO setting.

Putin only has to squeeze the EU balls via gas and we will see how things play then, how the USA came to think that they can expand into Ukraine is beyond belief. The problem for the US is if they gun for Putin directly he will in all lightlyhood respond by dumping the US debt of which he holds quite a bit and we will see if the giant has feet of clay.

Personally I don't care a fig for Putin, but the American approach has been a joke from the begining from Nuland onwards, and people who are broke (The USA) should be more careful who they piss off.

To plunder, to slaughter, to steal, these things they misname empire; and where they make a wilderness, they call it peace.

U.S. officials angry: Israel doesn’t back stance on Russia Amid tension, Netanyahu backs out of event he was invited to personally by Putin. By Barak Ravid Published 02:49 13.04.14 http://www.haaretz.com/mobile/.premium-1.585333?v=D97A0B2854A04B94D98D82... . ..."
Adding more fuel to the flames in Washington were public remarks by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in which they maintained their "neutrality" and failed to back up the United States."
"We have good and trusting relations with the Americans and the Russians, and our experience has been very positive with both sides. So I don't understand the idea that Israel has to get mired in this," Lieberman told Israel's Channel 9 television when asked about the Ukraine crisis. When White House and State Department officials read these comments, they nearly went crazy. They were particularly incensed by Lieberman's mentioning Israel's relations with the United States and with Russia in the same breath, giving them equal weight. The United States gives Israel $3 billion a year in military aid, in addition to its constant diplomatic support in the UN and other international forums. Russia, on the other hand, supplies arms to Israel's enemies and votes against it regularly in the UN." ...b.r.

The overthrow of Ukraine by armed racist anti-semetic thugs and bullies openlty flaunting their Nazi identification and roots must be very awkward for Netanyahu and Lieberman.  Any observer would have to wonder if it was a factor in their distancing themselves from the US on Ukraine. Amazingly there is no mention of this issue in the Haaretz article. I went back and looked again, sure I must have missed it. Unreal.

(and that is the entire point of the exercise).

so - does he own facebook stock?  or citibank stock?  or las vegas mcmansions?  or gold?  or exxon stock?  or euros?  or us treasurys?

wow - $40 billion.  could be anything.  diamonds?  shares in hooters?  rare picassos?  bit coin?

does he have controlling shares in a corporation that keeps the pipes from freezing and bursting across most of northen europe?

or maybe some health care company associated with obamacare?  maybe in home rentals to h1b visa employees in ussa?

and while on that - maybe in companies offshoring north america jobs to india?

you decide.  but - i will bet he's not a stupid investor.  the day's of 'warren' loving ketchup might be over.

Well, I don't care if Putin is a 'good guy' or if he's a corrupt and greedy devil. It doesn't matter one damn bit. What matters is that they're going after him personally and he's going to retaliate. The U.S. is stuck in the over-reach rut. It takes a good deal of arrogance and shortsighted stupidity to get stuck there - and there's no lack of such in DC.

So it is a boomerang and they are going to cut their own big noses off to spite their faces. Putin's just the guy to handle it too. I only wonder what forms it will take. Putin's not going to get careless with the military option - that's the last resort. He has plenty of other much lower-cost, lower-risk options he can employ, some of them in unison with his Eastern partners. I'd say the petrodollar is quivering in its 'boots' now.

re: "... Putin's personal wealth, which includes a reported $40 billion stashed in Swiss bank accounts."

Proof?

If true, it puts Putin in an altogether different light.

But I've seen this repeated over and over without proof.  Where is the evidence?

And if it's not true, how would he disprove it?

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I take it as strong negative circumstantial evidence that no one has leaked Putin's Swiss bank account records.  The big players, who are willing to risk world nuclear war to defeat Russia, would certainly be able and willing to out Putin if he's guilty of corruption on such a grand scale.

When someone does leak such "evidence" I for one will be skeptical.  Too late.  If it's real it would already have happened.

All these distractions and all in the name of spinning the ponzi plates and taking over other nations and their resources to preserve our reserve currency status. If you wanna preserve the currency status just fucking do something positive instead of trying to FORCE EVERY NATION UNDER THE SUN TO TAKE OUR WORTHLESS PAPER paid for by deaths of citizens globally and citizens extraction of their purchasing power through the inflation you pretend is not occuring.

Otherwise your nothing but a band of thieves undeserving of holding any public office or involvement in our government..because if you are doing nothing but self serving acts for your own do the detriment of others financially and in many cases their outright DEATH than you are nothing but what we have seen throughout history a fucking ILLEGAL MAFIA CARTEL using government as your guise.

No need to show us, Tony. Nobody believes that 6 million propaganda nonsense any more. Well, maybe a few such as those who fell for the Kuwait baby incubator tale or the Belgium boy's arms story or the Gulf of Tonkin lie or the Pearl Harbor story or the rest of the wartime propaganda barfed out by the same old oligarchs as always in order to justify their cruelty.

Why not double down on your numbers even more, tony boy? Putin is worth a measly 320 billion? Make it 640 billion. 6 million jews killed? Pfft.. make it 12 million, or 24 million! RISK ON, wilson! Double down!

Don't let TW get under your skin, intrc8. He's like Karl Marx - a Hebrew who couldn't get it up and blames his mom. People like him are why we have hate crimes.

TW - the world, in particular the left, hates the truth about such things.

Stop voting for the leftists who always eventually start their mass murder - for the good of the people of course.

Yeah, my old man just made up the stories of the death camps he took part in liberating during WWII. All that film footage was just so much Hollywood propo. And you fucking shhitheads on the right, who drove at least as much of the world off the cliff as the left, are just as stupid, blind and fucked up as the Nazi motherfuckers and Commie fucks who pulled the stunt last time.

Keep spouting your anti-Semitic bullshit. The lot of you seem to forget that it could just be your kind that go down into the pits en masse next time. I just wonder...is it genocide to kill right-wing thugs and left-wingnuts? Maybe the sensible on the planet need to start culling the herd of shithead sheep who go around spouting John Birch Bullshit, or just those who make up 'facts' to support their intolerance and hate of all that is different from their Gestapo-worshipping fantasies.

The world doesn't hate the truth - it hates ideologue motherfuckers like Tony Wilson and his scum sucking cretinous crowd of parasitic shitheads. You stupid fucks won't recognize history even when it runs you over.

A. Who is speaking for the US and who is directing them to take such actions?

B. Why is the US completely out of control and not listening to its people?

C. What is the urgency? What is the purpose? Why the intensity?

D. The map tell me that Switzerland is an independent country and not the US. A deal for Swiss banks to steal Vlad's fiats could only be made through the banks.

Maybe Vlad is smart enough to realize the real enemy that is jerking the US around on a chain and threatening him is the banking empire and not the US Republic. I wonder if that makes a difference to him or if he is also being jerked around by the banking empire. Maybe the US and Russia should join together against the banking empire!?!

... and why do it at the same time that you remove all of your tanks from Europe?

I have to ask myself, Who are the Swiss bank gnomes more afraid of, Obama and the Fed, or Putin and the FSS (formerly known as the KGB)?

I can see problems for Obama if both the Swiss and the Russian become his enemies.

The guy spend his whole life the resurrect Russia from the Jelstin chaos, and now they think they can pressure him with some paper claims. I am sure there is no oligarch in Russia who dare to waver for a little paper stashed in some insolvent bank.

It sounds somebody has completely lost contact with reality.

If Putin has $40 billion in Switzerland it means he has $100 billion somewhere else.

I see some on ZH do not believe Putin would put any of his money where the US could reach it. The problem is Putin lives in  a country that can change power structure quickly which could require him to flee overnight. Putin's background has taught him to always be prepared for the unexpected. Even China would give up Putin's money if it was not politically profitable for them.

The horseshit Anti-jew false flag flopped on it's face... now this?  Shit, Obunga... if Vlad really comes after YOU, you will be in deep shit... cut the goebbels propaganda bullshit and just shut up for once!  Just cause Mike is leaving you... grow a pair, fool!!  Looks like this is forcing the alliance of Russia, China, India and the rest of the emerging markets... the craven Sauds will join too... Nice move by BathHouse Barry in his efforts to radically weaken the USA.
