No pre-election campaign is possible when the central powers have occupied the whole regions using force. The whole election process boiled down to a long list of candidates, but there is no one there the United States could rely on. How could a «democratic» victory be guaranteed when the majority of population has no wish to express its will at all? But Vice-President Biden told Kiev to go on with the mission.

To achieve air superiority, you need to control the ground (in modern, symmetrical warfare).
To supply troops, you need to control the sea. Or at the least, have 'interior lines', which Russia has.
To control the ground, you need APCs and mechanized infantry. These are usually countered with artillery, aerial bombardment. They all support each other. Modern warfare, though, means packing your troops too close together is tantamount to murder. Then of course there are Special Ops, Engineering, ECM, Intelligence...
. . . and to control the minds, you only need the me-duh.

They tried to take control of the "bread basket" and fuel resources of Russia twice, and failed both times - largely because of the west though. Russia has real grievances...but those grievances involve the crimes of the former Soviet Union and the current economic unfairness of their society. But now more recently, they have a new and unfamiliar problem: the taking away of their fledgling civil society in favor of an Authoritarian Strongman/Cult-of-Personality figure.
For this the Russian people are nervous and fearful. They may not know what it is to live in a truly democratic society but they remember the horror of living under a bureaucracy run by thugs and hypocrites. This is a step in that direction and they feel it.
So now they have their new Princess Putin describing the old Imperium and territory of Catherine the Great as being the rightful legacy of the "Russian People"...and some say, "great" but the wiser and older folks are saying"hold on a minute there!". Russians as a whole do not want to be the oppressors of the past...only the lie of Russians being set upon is allowing this littlest Czarist Princess to pull any of these stunts we see today...but for HOW LONG can Putin keep this up? And what is the end plan?
If this little Czarina invades Ukraine and manages to do so with measurable success and with no loss of significant Russian forces or Russian cities (dirty bombs) then how long does he think he can lord it over mixed populations that include sometimes majorities of NON-Russians? How long can he employ troops to defend the new Empire?
And how then will he afford to update his rusty military? The budget will be enormous in order to keep the troops in place in Eastern Ukraine. And I suspect that the war of sabotage and dirty bombs and insurgency will not be isolated to the Ukraine. Picture the angry, vengeful Chechens x 100. Picture Ukrainians ever more angry at their Russian occupiers ("hey, why are we so poor!") and willing to exact spiteful revenge on the Russian people.

A good analogy of the bigger picture is to see Obama racing around the world trying to co-opt nations into the TIPP and TPP as soon as possible to try to keep the EU/ Japan etc in a $ based economic walled garden, where these nations will have to sink or swim together. The man is like a headless chicken and the central banking families and their sycophants on Wall Stret and in the City of London are having a complete nervous breakdown trying every stunt in the book to keep the shell game going.
Russia and China have told them to Foxtrot Oscar in no uncertain terms, that much is painfully obvious to see. The Russians have learnt many lessons since the fall of the Soviet Union in how the game will be played and China has taken over a century to recover from the Opium Wars and Japanese brutality. They will never yield economically to the west or allow any other states to step into their territories ever again.
