Isolated Russia Makes Friends: To Hold Military Drill With China; Strikes Multi-Billion Deals Qatar And Iran

Tyler Durden's picture

The G-8 may be no more as the G-7 throws every possible case of harsh language known to man at the Kremlin, which obstinately refuses to back down, while re-escalating sanctions against a Russia which merely has done what the US does every single time its national interest abroad is threatened, but one thing is becoming ever clearer: while the west isolates Russia with ever stricter measures, Russia has decided to make some new friends.

Such as China:

China and Russia will hold a "maritime cooperation-2014" drill in East China Sea at end-May, Voice of Russia reports on its Chinese-language website yesterday.

China and Russia will conduct reconnaissance in the area within 3 days to prepare for the drill, the report says, citing an unidentified representative from Russian navy.

Earlier, the Russian military delegation of the Russian Navy, led by Viktor Karamazov Couchepi, arrived in Shanghai. Naval officials and representatives of the General Command of the Pacific Fleet met the Russian military delegation.

Such as Iran:

Iran and Russia are negotiating a power deal worth up to $10 billion in the face of increasing US financial alienation. The construction of new thermal and hydroelectric plants and a transmission network are in the works. Iran’s Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian met his Russian counterpart Aleksandr Novak in Tehran on Sunday in order to discuss the potential power deals, according to Iran’s Mehr news agency.

“[Expansion of] Iran-Russia relations are not only to the benefit of the two nations, but also are beneficial to entire region,” Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, stated in a meeting with Novak in Tehran on Sunday, reported Iran’s FARS news agency.

Plans include the construction of hydroelectric and thermal generating plants and a new transmission network. The possibility of Russia exporting 500 megawatts of electricity to Iran is also on the cards, said Mehr.

The strengthening of economic ties between the two countries is of heightened significance given both economic sanctions on Iran, imposed with the aim of encouraging Iran to cut its uranium stockpiles, and new economic sanctions on Russian officials imposed on Monday.

On Sunday, Chitchian reportedly stressed “the need for further expansion of economic ties between Tehran and Moscow, particularly in the energy and commerce spheres,” stated Mehr.

Moscow has additionally been discussing the trade of 500,000 barrels a day of Iranian oil for Russian goods with Tehran. The protracted deal, first reported at the beginning of April could be worth as much as $20 billion, and has rattled Washington because it could bring Iran's crude exports above one million barrels a day - the threshold agreed upon in the nuclear deal between the P5+1 powers - US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – and Iran.

And such as Bahrain:

The governments of Bahrain and Russia have signed a deal to cooperate on investments, at a time when U.S. and European governments are imposing economic sanctions on Russia over the crisis in Ukraine.

Bahrain is a U.S. diplomatic ally in the Gulf, and its decision suggests Western sanctions may not deter other countries from continuing to expand business ties with Russia.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Bahraini sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat to identify and work together on investment opportunities in their countries. Mumtalakat chief executive Mahmood al-Kooheji will join the RDIF's international advisory board, helping to formulate its strategic direction, the statement added.

The Bahraini fund is one of the smaller sovereign funds in the Gulf, with $7.1 billion of assets as of last September. The RDIF is a $10 billion fund created by Russia's government to make equity investments, mainly in the Russian economy.

If nothing else, at least it shows just how seriously the rest of the world (away from those G-7 members who are as insolvent as the US of course) is taking US sanctions and threats of retaliation. Meanwhile, back in the US, rigged stocks hit intraday highs on what we would otherwise call BTFWWWIIID... if only there was a D.

This is unbelieveable. To hold joint exercises with a month lead time means two (2) things -

1. This was planned well in advance and the protocols have been reviewed and approved by the participants.

2. This is not planned, but the participating parties understand that the situation is dire. Russia has a real navy, China sucks doog shit. Synergysically thi means wha?

Roll the dice. Long term, short term this is a VERY bad thing. Just like Japan getting their military groove on, I think it's too little and way too late.

I think it's safe to say this was not planned in advance.

By their actions, the Chinese and Russians have decided to play the global diplomatic two-step... and show the world what wild and crazy guys they can be.  If China and Russia have a great deal of fun at these exercises, the rest of the world will notice and want to join the party.

I'm thinking Johnny Onions and the Liver Eaters will want to play at this gig...

he is a political right wing hack but he brings up some good points especially about racism in america. unfortunately he only dwells on black/white racism and has so far ignored growing racism against white people in communities with majority nonwhite or nonanglo communities(one of buchanan's favorite, albeit veiled, topics). i like his observations because they are the conclusions i came to after living in the south for 20+ years. essentially he posits that black neighborhoods were vibrant wealthy communities pre civil rights movement because they went across the tracks to make money from white people and could only spend their money in the black community in black owned stores, with black doctors and lawyers and black tradesmen so the the money stayed in the community and grew. civil rights gave them the "freedom" to move out of the community(physically and monetarily) so all the blacks with money did so, leaving behind a permanently poor community. he actually scolds the black community for abandoning their neighborhood when all other minorities consciously made efforts to strengthen their historical communities with investments in the future of "their people".

this follows an argument i bring up that just can't get past the indoctrination of civil rights and racism. i argue that the civil rights movement took the position of labor when they should have taken the position of management/investor. in other words they should have fought specifically for the right to open a restaurant next door to the whites only restaurant instead of the right to sit at the counter of the whites only restaurant. they should have fought for the right to borrow and invest money to build palaces in their neighborhood instead of the right to buy into another neoighborhood. they should have fought to make their neighborhood the envy of other communities rather than the right to join the other communities. they should have turned spellman and other black universities into schools that rivaled the ivy league. in short, they should have taken the winners' trail instead of fighting for a more sophisticated slave relationship.

Not really.

http://dohanews.co/qatar-foreign-minister-gulf-differences-come-end/

In Qatar’s first public remarks about a GCC-wide agreement signed last week, a senior official has said a dispute between his country and three of its neighbors has been resolved.

...

Thursday’s accord involved adopting mechanisms to insure the security, stability and interests of each Gulf state, without compromising their sovereignty, according to a statement released by GCC nations.

The agreement apparently resolved an ongoing dispute between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE, who last month withdrew their ambassadors from Doha.

The three countries said Qatar was not upholding its part of a Gulf security pact. At the time, officials in Doha suggested that the dispute was more likely over the nation’s foreign policy – namely, its support of the Muslim Brotherhood.

...

Bahrain doing deals with Russia would be going against this and the GCC, no? Saudi Arabia is the head price manipulator for oil through OPEC in the Petrodollar monetary system? Unless not really and it does serve their security pact. Which means...

Buffett: Huge gain for mom & pop investors

The biggest change over the past 25 years in terms of investing is that it's less expensive for the little guy, billionaire Warren Buffett told CNBC on Tuesday. Buyers of stocks incur little in the way of trading costs compared to other investments like real estate, he said on "Squawk Box" after being named No. 6 on the CNBC 25 list of the most influential people in business over the past quarter century. "Commissions are a lot lower than they were 25 years ago. Spreads between the bid and ask are less."

edit:  Oh, the title is fudged up...

Qatar is definitely on EU's side:

As a result, Qatar — the world’s number-one provider of liquefied natural gas (LNG) — is well positioned to play a more influential role in Europe’s energy landscape. Although unlikely to replace Russia as Europe’s top natural gas provider, Qatar could assist in significantly decreasing the EU’s reliance on Russian energy resources...

Syria and Crimea were necessary to Russia because of their naval bases.  Putin has finally made a counter-move.

The deal goes beyond what's described here, too: the Bahrainians made an arms deal with Rosboronexport, Russia's friendly neighborhood arms exporter that, magically, isn't even under sanctions.

LMAO!  Russia goes out and makes "friends" with the scum of the earth and Putin thinks they have improved their situation.  Iran, China, etc. are the same kind of shit countries that Hitler made friends with: A fascist Italy and a bunch of militarized Japanese who were all doomed to get the shit beat out of them when the rest of the world decided it had had enough with the lies, stealing other people's lands and economic threats.  Pick your source----a good history book, the Bible or just rely on common sense; when a country is being isolated for invading its neighbors and reaches out to new "friends" to support their motives the end result is the destruction of the inital aggressor AND their new friends.  Happens every time.  But don't tell the Russian glee club that because they have convinced themselves that this time it will be different.......Vladimir Putin has this all shit figured out.  LMAO!  There will be hell to pay for the whole world before this thing completely plays itself out but Putin will sign his own death warrant if he hangs his future on countries like China and Iran.

Veterans of ZH are very welcome to correct me if I'm wrong, but you appear to be a fucking idiot.

Do you have any idea how many people the United States has killed since the end of world war two in wars and military interventions of election?  How many democracies it has overthrown for US corporations, and the Bretton Woods/petrodollar regime?

Russia is declining.

The US is declining more, and will kill tens of thousands of innocent people, and squander the lives of hundreds or thousands of American soldiers, Marines and SFs, just to delay the inevitable, and so the wealthy and the banks can take just a little more of whatever real assets remain.

You are a fuckin' rat, richsob, and no matter how much you squeak and squeal - you're still going down with the ship.

Drown accordingly.

Real classy there, MD. I never defended the U.S. and it's inane actions over the past 15 years as it launched one ridiculous war after another. But since you brought it up I'll play along. The U.S. ALSO made new "friends" and got its ass handed to it time and time again for the same reasons Russia is going to fail when they try it. Aggressors have a poor track record in history. Two wrongs don't make a right. The U.S. and Russia are two peas in the same pod. Now calm down and go study some history.

You say "Russia is not aggressing".  That's not even being intellectually honest.  If you want to defend Russia invading Ukraine then that's your perogative.  But Ukraine is NOT preparing to invade Russia.....it's the other way around.  If Mexico "decided" on a policy that the U.S. didn't like and the 101 Airborne was preparing to drop into Mexico City would you call Mexico the aggressor?  Of course not.  Russia's pissed at Ukraine and just itching to pull them firmly back into the Russian orbit.  And they'll try to use their military to do that unless wiser heads decide otherwise.  They're both wrong.  But the aggressor in this case is Russia if they deploy Russian forces inside Ukraine....for whatever reason.

Bzzzt..wrong.  The US staged a coup that overthrew the legitimate government of Ukraine in order to make it another NATO puppet state, and thus be able to park missiles on Russia's doorstep. The Russians are simply making it clear that there is no way in hell that is going to happen.

But hey, we support any Oligarch who can wrestle bears,

and we reject any Oligarch Puppet who is married to a bear.

Therefore we have to support Putin over Michelle's arranged husband.

(Freely substitue "deranged" for "arranged".)

How long did Putin wrestle that bear?

Now that i think about it, Obama is the tougher guy for being married to a bear for so long.

Probably not, Israel will lead them to victory, after sucking another gallon of blood out of their good friends, Israel led them in, Israel will see them through. Clearly a new world order being constructed: 1) those within the US sphere of influence, and 2) those outside of the US sphere of influence.

The arrogance of imperial US is that they believe they can dictate their terms to the world.  No longer true.  The reality is the anti-US camp has grown so large, it is a viable economic competitor to the Empire --  Russia, China, Brazil, India, Iran, Venezuela ...

The "Five Eyes" share a blood oath: US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia. They will ALWAYS back the Empire.

The "old" cold war was largely a military proposition.  The "new" cold war is asymetrical economic.  Guns, boots and WMDs are less important than currency, sovereign debt and trade imbalances.  The US is HIGHLY vulnerable to financial warfare.  1) They need to sustain the US$ as a reserve currency and, 2) because of their debt, to sustain a low yield on UST bills.  If either of these collapse, the US is screwed.

Market forces are clearly working against the US.  Yields on USTs are unnaturally low due to QE and now Belgium purchases.  Once this stops, interest rates will jack up and the house of cards will collapse.

Timing is everything, however.  I have no idea how long this can go on.

Bit simplistic earle.  Australia was selling iron ore, coal and now natural gas to Japan and Korea before the emergence of China.  There are always buyers for quality resources, though certainly China boosted price and volume for a period.  And of course Australia has been selling agricultural produce to the world for a long, long time.

On the other hand, where would the US be without China to provide all those manufactured goods in exchange for essentially worthless Bennybucks and equally worthless Treasuries?

More interesting on the Bahrain front to go with this.

http://dt.bh/bahrain-russia-relax-visa-rules/

Bahrain, Russia relax visa rules

...

Commenting on the deal, Transportation Minister and Acting Chief Executive of the EDB, Kamal Ahmed, said “The agreements to be signed this week build on Russia and Bahrain’s already valued economic relationship and put in place the foundations that will enable us to work together more closely in the future.”

“Russia and the GCC are both leading growth markets with extensive expertise and opportunities in industries from oil and gas to financial services – there are strong prospects for more investment in the future,” the minister added.

...

End Syrian war: Crown Prince

Prince Salman yesterday held discussions with key Russian leaders and officials including former Russian Prime Minister, and current Middle East advisor to President Putin, Yevgeny Primakov, and Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.

The discussions focused on the need to bring an end to the Syrian conflict and to establish a sustainable political solution that prioritises the safety and interests of the Syrian people. The meeting also underscored the importance of the strategic dialogue between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Russian Federation.

Later in the day, Prince Salman visited the Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow where he toured several sites associated with Russia’s history and cultural heritage, including the Kremlin’s Armoury Museum.

...

Looks like the GCC is trying to cut a deal with Assad and Putin to get the gas flowing. Not good for O'Muslim Brotherhood and his boys since he has officially become expendable if that is the case. They don't need him to run cold war 2.0 to isolate the US further and start up the final stage of Petrodollar destruction in Ukraine.

Just need to watch the Bahrain infomercial channel aka CNN International and see if they change their story to know how serious of a threat they see this as.

This is old news bitchez. Russia has been hooking up the ay-rabs at least since the '50s. With weapons of all types: T-62s, T-90s, Migs, scuds, sukhois, AKs, rpgs and other things I'm not aware of. Hell, that's why the Egyptians couldn't break Israeli defenses in Sinai in '73. T-62s were designed wrong for fighting over dunes, but I digress. This knowledge is online on YouTube. Since this began, I have scrutinized all the photos I saw just here on ZH. The Russkies have what appears to be export- restricted sights, and some rifle parts.

I read a story somewhere (maybe the link was on here) about their new body armour and their helmets- able to stop a 5.56X45mm NATO SS109 steel-core round.

I am thinking they got into the G4 supplies in central asia where we have warehouses for re-supply into Afghanistan.  The body armour appears to be made by Russian factories.

Putin has placed a high value on acquiring excellent equipment, at least for his career-staffed elite units.  Remember, their guys are not so much made to produce at gunpoint anymore. They can make money! I would be careful about engaging with them.

Its not a good sign that countries are lining up and taking sides. More troubling is some of these relationships have been growing for some time.

Back in the middle of 2012  Putin pledged to strengthen Russia’s economic and political ties with China after skipping a Group of Eight summit in the U.S. the month before. This unholy alliance between Russia and China may create major problems for America going forward. For more about this meeting and the implications see the article below.
