It's all the Russians' fault? This does not exactly look like de-escalation to us...

thats enough firepower to wipe out the entire russian airforce i assure you they are no match for western fighters.

62 NATO fighters

4 AWACS

1 kc-135

vs

Russian Air Superiority Fighters

225 Su-27 (comparable to the F-16)

25 Su-30

34 Su-35S

254 MiG 29

134 MiG 31

672 aircraft in inventory

50% estimate available to theatre

336 aircraft

60% available to sortie (not all planes are available each day)

201 available aircraft

201 vs 62

hmmm.

Russia has some very long range AA missiles. The strategy is to take out the AWACs and leave the balance of the fighters flying blind. You don't need that much air time to point a missile and let it rip.

Russian air strategy is to salvo missiles using a mix of seeker heads. The theory is that any attempt to avoid one type of seeker head will leave the defending aircraft exposed to the second or third or fourth missile in the same salvo.

Granted there may be additional NATO aircraft available but if they are required then this conflict will heat up very quickly and each side will be left flinging stones at the other.

Plus all those NATO birds require gas. Guess where that comes from?

As for qualitiative superiority that is something very difficult to judge.

On one side you have folks defending the motherland.

On the other you have folks defending the reputation of the fudgepacker.

Not bad, sushi.

FYI jet fuel is closest to kerosene as a middle distillate of crude.  Not all crude is as richly endowed with jet fuel as some other crude.

Russia's crude has plenty of it.  Eagleford shale, not particularly.

Now the rebuttal will be EF shale "oil" is indeed as loaded with kerosene as Russian oil, but that's a dodge because EF shale is crude plus condensate and substantially condensate, so only after they separate out the weak stuff they can claim their residual good stuff has lots of kerosene.  Bogus.

Tue, 04/29/2014 - 19:41 | 4709950 post turtle saver
post turtle saver's picture

interesting, since Valero just pumped three quarter of a billion dollars into refinery upgrades to process the light crude coming out of Eagle Ford, specifically for diesel and kerosene production... go on, ask me how I know... oh wait, I'm not supposed to be an expert on that

as for kerosene itself, people have been extracting kerosene from shale oil since the 9th century... here's a hint, there's a reason another name for it is 'coal oil'

Tue, 04/29/2014 - 22:37 | 4710610 CrashisOptimistic
CrashisOptimistic's picture

I think you have this part right and part wrong.

The recent Port Arthur refinery upgrade was done for diesel/kerosene, but the feed source for its crude is Canada.

The 750 million upgrade project for EagleFord is to process the near condensate quality EF "oil" . It is very light on diesel/kerosene and that's not the focus of the upgrade.  They simply need a refinery that can deal with oil they don't see much of, ultra light, nearly condensate.

So you're half right, that big investment is to process EF "oil", because it's nearly not oil (high API).  But the focus is not middle distillates.

sorry, but your information is incorrect

http://www.ogj.com/articles/2014/02/eagle-ford-crude-prompts-upgrades-at...

again, news articles aside, I've posted my background before so I stand by my information

edit: for the record... you can distill kerosone from just about any feedstock imaginable... they've been doing it for centuries, as I mentioned previously

second edit: the better word is "derive"... lots of focus on fractional distillation but everyone forgets about the other chemical processes that are used in modern refineries... to get kerosenes you're working with a mix of alkanes (10 to 18 carbons in the chain) and aromatics... these can be derived from straight distillation or via chemical processing (cracking / unification / alteration)...

executive summary... you can't assume a nation like the US with the largest and most modern refinery capacity by far can be left in the lurch when it comes to processing needed fuels for the military... you give these guys crude stocks and they'll get you the resulting product you need, guaranteed

The latest F-18 would probably be a closer comparison, with the SU-27/30 having an edge. That is if their pilots can utilize the superior platform (training). Where the Russians really hold the advantage is their SAM tech. While the US has spent trillions on F-22s and F-35s, and various other cancelled "superweapons", the Russians have spent their money on missile systems to defeat "superweapons".

"latest F-18 " is no match for Su-27M3, Su-35S or Su-30M2 in ANY aspect.

Yes they did, but to put it all together, it's interesting point to start with basics... there are only two schools of piloting in the world french and russian. As an axample:  Airwar by germans during WWII was conducted compleetly differently from russians, russians won. US adopted german lecals (french school) enreached by it's own expiriences... russians staying with their own. Advanced capabilities of airframes and airborn weapon platforms at this point are clearly on russian side.

Well first we have to figure out which version of the F-16 we are discussing.

Then we have to define the nature of the combat and the tactics to be employed.

As for numbers, I don't think anyone has anything beyond conjecture at this point.

We will have to wait for someone to write the history in order to obtain the right numbers.

I doubt many of us will be around to read that history.

"which version of the F-16 we are discussing" - any one of them.

F-16 is very old light fighter-bomber, not used or even considered for air to air missions for some time now, Su-27 (Su-35, Su-30)and it's variants is heavy air-dominance fighter with large radar, large payload, unmatched air to air and dog fighting capabilities, from short range weapons guided by pilot's eye to long range, radar assisted, intercept documented by Guinness book of records, target destroyed at range of 280 km.(o was it Mig-31?)

Tue, 04/29/2014 - 21:04 | 4710248 sushi

What you are saying is that NATO has moved 62 targets within range of roughly 3 times as many RF air superiority fighters.

This is not a defensive deployment.

It's an invitation.

---

As for range, the Novator K-100 is a dedicated AWACs killer with a reported 300 to 400 km effective range.

My bet is that that is an understated range figure as no one wants to put the real numbers up too early.

Time to stock up on popcorn.

"NATO has moved 62 targets within range" - there is no need...) to move any one of airforce assets that could be requested for such mission are right there...) Note that none of them need KC-135-s or permanent fixture of all western superplains fuelpods...))))

And Yeah, Su-27 family carries 8-12 air to air weapons of different range so 15 Su-27M3 that are now based in Belorus is plenty for all NATO birds...;-) Air base at Khotilovo with it's Mig-31BM, Monchegorsk airbase, Ostrov airbase e.t.c. will assist if needed.

"Novator K-100' - I was talking about R-37 or K-37... weapon of Su-27,35 and Mig-31 family.

Let me explain one simple little thing. It doesn't fucking matter who has the best planes, the best pilots, the best missiles or any of this other self mastubatory bullshit.

What matters is the Constitution of the United States of America which states quite clearly that the Congress must vote on a declaration of war.

There's a reason Russia isn't doing dick even when they have all this "superiority". It's because they don't have"superiority" in any theatre - air, land or water. The US does all the blustering the Russians need, because they need a plausible enemy. No one buys Russian hardware unless they are in the WalMart of arms deals.

The Russian "air force" is the equivalent of the Chinese "navy". Very pretty.

My cousin was in the United States Army for 23 years. Started as a private, ended as a Major. Infantry, Intelligence, Special Forces along the way. Did 2 deployments to Afganistan.

He QUIT after returning home. Was totally disillusioned and pissed off.

He told me that most Afghans were basically blind as a result of Vitamin A deficiency during childhoold. They couldn't see and couldn't be taught to shoot a rifle. They also had trouble learning to use a toilet.

He told me that when you saw a Taliban with a Lee Enfield then you needed to watch the fuck out because that guy could actually see.

He came home weighing 140 pounds. Had to carry 70 pounds of armor and gear in the mountains. Watched Afghan parents feed their babies opium balls during the winter to quell their hunger pangs, resulting in babies that were addicts from the cradle.

I have another cousin that joined the Marines. Went to Afghanistan. Was forced to drive down the road in a HumVee. Came home missing most of his lower body. He requires care for life and will never live independently.

Yeah Team America. Let's go kick some more ass. It's fun. We have better stuff.

Now ask yourself, how much air power would be needed to defeat and prep the battlefield of a modernized military power, with historical military creditionals?

Reading the whole background the Mayor victim was vascillating between both sides for the last few months.  So the Ribbon picture was when he supported Russia.  I guess he pissed off both sides and so was seen as not 'controllable', so was too independent for TPTB...so either side could have done this.   The scrambled politics in East Ukraine are nearly complete for the final Omlette and buffet.

Agree, since before WWI Russia has been trying to get it out of the ground and across to Europe (via Turkey or any other means).  It is free and cheap (and subsidised by Russia) until it isn't.  Everybody who's been getting good/cheap stuff riots for freebees when they go away.

The Russians (and Western funding) fully worked their fields and built-out the Russian (and Ukraine) infrastructure, which Germany and EU benefit from directly.

This is all end-game...just getting ready for the credits.   And then the China movie starts.

When water stops flowing into their house or apartment because the water company guys fled, shelter in place will become "where is the government".

Then they will die and feed flies.

You conspiracy wackos just don't get it.

There is no victory.  For anyone.

Oil scarcity is an equal opportunity killer.  The joos aren't going to survive. The blacks aren't.  The whites aren't.

There is no requirement that there be a victor.

Those planes won't fly well without fuel.  And Russia won't be allowed to just refuse to export oil and instead "hold it for future generation Russians".

When you have no fuel for conventional forces, you use non conventional forces.  That is, ICBMs.

Yes, CIO, No clue why the downarrows.  If you have 7 billion people, and 30 years of oil supply, and then cut the population to 700 million, you suddenly have 300 years of oil supply.  And probably more than that, since most of those 700 million will be killing themselves for food, instead of driving to work and to the mall.

It's an uncomfortable topic.

But the problem with turning 30 years into 300 years this way is that there will be fallout, which doesn't give a shit if you are an oligarch or a bum, not all bunkers are good enough, and somebody has to get the oil out of the ground.  I suspect that the Bakken would become an irritated fallout zone, or at least significant parts of it would.  There are a lot of missile silos (i.e. targets) just to the west of it.  And a lot of the equipment that you need to get the oil is made by people who would likely die in facilities that would likely fall into ruin if not near one of the many ground zeros.

Another 'american' hero. With 'americans', it never misses. It is always as surprising as ever when 'americans' apply their idea of equality.

'Americans' can go long to explain how people are not equal, especially when they are.

Then, suddenly, when they are not equal, 'americans' tell you they are equal.

At this stage, in the world, there are something like 3 billions people that are out of the use of oil.

They consume nil. But guess what? As an oil consumer, they are equal to 'americans' though because people for certain things must be equal.

3 billions, that is roughly half of humanity. So let kill them and from 30 supply, you suddenly jump to 60 years of supply.

Aint life good in an 'american' world? Overcoming the environment and stuff? Multiply zero by something and you get more than that something.

'Americans' are the ones making the bulk of consumption.

There is roughly one billion 'americans' around the world. If by any chance, the 700 billions remaining are 'americans', the oil supply expectancy is not increased.

By the way, by eliminating 'americans', the other six billions will see the oil supply expectancy jump to the roof.

If 'americans' are that humanity lovers they enjoy depicting themselves as, they know what options they are left with. For the sake of humanity.

But over in Asia might get hot if there is real aggression, and defense.

Woe is us, for the American Empire will not go down without a fight.  All it takes is one small miscalculation, and you have an all out war.  Prescient how we stand 100 years from 1914.  While history does not literally repeat itself, it certainly rhymes.  So far, when you have resurgent or rising revisionist powers that threaten the pie of the established block of gangsters, you're going to get large conflagrations.  Over the last 300-400 years, during the beginning of each century, there has been a large conflagration.  Perhaps we are doomed to a Nietzschean eternal recurrence after all.

Played golf yesterday with a (somewhat) liberalized pal who said the "NY Times is reporting that the US is going after Putin's money..." Blah, blah, blah.

I pointed out that the stories are all innuendo and fabrication, nothing proven and that if he gets his news from the NY Times, his views are going to be warped.

His response was that he was more well-read than anyone he knows and most of the people he knows are scholars.

I decided to talk about golf instead of world politics. We had a few (many) drinks on the course and a generally nice round.

I am still amazed that intelligent people - this guy is at least 130 IQ - don't understand the US propaganda machine and are completely bamboozled by it. His comment on scholarly friends really made me change the subject as I would normally say something along the lines of "most scholars are idiots."

The robot brings back the best martini ever and says to the man, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "168." The robot then proceeds to talk about physics, space exploration and medical technology.

The guy leaves, but he is curious, so he goes back into the bar. The robot bartender says, "What will you have?" The guy says, "Martini". Again, the robot makes a great martini, gives it to the man and says, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "100." The robot then starts to talk about Nascar, Budweiser and John Deere tractors.

The guy leaves, but finds it very interesting, so he thinks he will try it one more time. He goes back into the bar. The robot says, "What will you have?" The guy says, "Martini", and the robot brings him another great martini. The robot then says, "What's your IQ?" The guy says, "Uh, about 50." The robot leans in real close and says, "So... you people still happy you voted for Obama?"

The word liberal, in the European sense, means low government, free market, pro-capitalism, pro-competition.

It's what liberalism means to europeans, who invented the concept.

How the fuck the concept of liberalism got to mean socialism, pro-gay, uber-state-government in the US is beyond me.

But I'm not surprised. You americanians, put minced meat between two bread buns and lots and lots ot vinegar tomato sauce, and call it tasty food. Anything goes in the US.
