It's all the Russians' fault? This does not exactly look like de-escalation to us...

This is probably one of the best summations of U.S. foreign policy and the banks that pull their strings.

"It's all the Russians' fault"?...

So we are blaming you for more than 50 years of our own reckless behavior that's exploited every Country we've ever done business with and created a path of devastation on anyone that didn't capitulate and follow our rules!   Your land and the natural resources in it?...It's not fucking yours It's all ours until "we" say otherwise...

So what are you gonna do about it?  Huh???...

Would not want to be the NATO pilots and "escorts" right about now.

Sure hope the Air Force and Navy pilots are starting to see the "cracks" in their own edifice before it's too late for them?  You would have to be one arrogant stupid motherfucker to continue drinking the Kool-Aid if your career in the military has spanned just the last 10 years!

When they shoot your ass out of the sky I hope you're packing cyanide cause I sure as hell wouldn't want to be a NATO pilot facing capture over Russia or Ukraine!!!

If Russa were to see its airforce destroyed and come under direct attack I would expect them to unleash holy hell. It that started how and when would it end?

The idea of America getting involved or jumping into a war in Ukraine would have been hard to imagine a  few years ago. As I write this we are engaged in a war of words but the potential for this to escalate into a shooting war is real. Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is becoming a reality. As insane as it appears this could become the final outcome.

The location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. It is silly to think Putin and Russia will back down. This means poking the bear is not a smart move. It cannot be emphasized enough this government was not elected by the people and that the military of Ukraine is divided and extremely weak. More about this subject in the article below.

Any NATO country is 'safe', and Putin fully knows it.  However, Belarus should be very worried now (especially once Ukraine falls to Russia). On the other hand there is nothing in Belarus that Putin or Russia wants.  The only interesting thing is Estonia being 100 miles from Saint Petersburg, and there being many Russian higher-ups today who lived/worked/work there.

And the only other interest is how China will respond to all these Western posing and puffery.

Russia and China have a ping-pong game now.

So what point ?   Does Belarus go to EU or Russia (silly question)...I would bet Belarus goes to Russia in a heartbeat, especially since they have been intertwined since their independence.

(but would the West see that as a provocation?)

Tue, 04/29/2014 - 22:57 | 4710694 HardlyZero

I'd say its not nearly as bad as Ukraine, and last year the EU inerest has worn off quite a bit.

Personally have not been to Minsk (or older Pinsk)...my 104 year old Aunt (RIP) came across to Brooklyn in 1899 when she was few years old.

Followed changes over there and take interest when possible.   WWII took out much of the Father's side of the family in the 1940's.

Anyway all the non-NATO countries are probably figuring out what to do now that things may be freed-up and in-motion.

I don't think anyone expects war.

Tue, 04/29/2014 - 23:09 | 4710739 sushi

So you are saying that the folks in Minsk have less interest in an association with the EU than they had previously?

Is there any sense of the reason for that change in attitude?

I would have thought that EU association would be very attractive due to the labour mobilty it confers so that people are able to seek opportunity in the core EU states.

Are they as afraid of Putin and the RF as Kerry would have us believe?

Cyprus last year.   And a lot of their own Belarus corruption, soured many (across Eastern Europe) on the EU.

The whole debt/IMF/fiat banking issues have turned many away.  In addition, there are those in the EU that don't need or desire more debtors.

Of course, the IMF lives on debt.   But the people of Europe don't want to take on any more problems (sorry).

But I'm not the expert.

Seems like Belarus and Ukraine are on very similar glidepaths to Russia.

Both countries are Russian breadbaskets, relying upon Russia for nearly all of their exports, finance, and energy needs.

Thanks for the insight.

It is an interesting contrast to the Kerry, Obama, western media blaming Putin for the unrest whereas your information supports the public of both Belarus and Ukraine becoming disenchanted with the EU (for all the same reasons continually voiced here on ZH).

Maybe we are about to enter a "Global Spring" in which the oppressed of the world unite and throw off the chains of their reserve currency.

Sensible comment.  Should mention fuel supplies.  Also, don't forget about production.  Can we damage theirs enough?  Can ours keep up or be brought up to speed fast enough?  A long war would be bad for us.  A really long war would probably be worse.

I think any fighting would be limited to Ukrianian battlespace and to NATO air and Ukrainian ground vs Russian ground and air.  No bases would be hit on either side as long as they are outside Ukraine.  A limited exhibition for both sides sales efforts.

This is mainly an economic war and at the center of this war is gold.  Curiously absent in this war is any direct mention of gold as a weapon by Putin even though it is a very effective weapon.  This leads me to believe that Putin is complicit with the West and the plan is to create a great distraction with a new Cold War.

Putin aint on the Socialist debasement team side (bean there done that), we're waging economic warfare against Russia by supressing gold prices while they're selling gold to meet dollar obligations.

Avoid gold, the cold war is over, we surrendered and joined the losing side, Russia joined the free market liberty side.

Scorecard: briefly America is the broke looter bad guys printing paper like Zimbabwe (actually we print them to shame, literally) , Putin the Patriot for private property and sovereignty rights.

This is all about sovereignty, Ukraine & Russia's sovereignty versus the non-sovereignty chaos of the EU, which is now a permanent mob-rule debtors prison.

Joining the EU is a permenent and irreversable obliteration of national sovereignty, and ultimately over time and demographics a submission to Islam, or constant war forever.

A sale of Russian S-300 to Iran was considered by Israel to be an act of war by Iran and Israel promised to attack if that sale went through. Because S-300 is one of the best anti aircarft missiles systems on earth. Do not point to it's introduction date, the entire system is upgraded as new electronics and new missiles are added. Russia upped their game with S-400, this added a whole range of medium and long range missiles allowing S-400 to operate against most targets, for protection the mobile launchers will have TOR M2U with it's brand new missile, proven against smart bombs, cruise missile and aircraft targets at medium and shorter ranges. All systems are mobile, presenting no static targets to attack. TOR M2U can fire on the move, S-300 and S-400 can take a few minutes to set up fire and move. S-500 anti missile system is nearing it's deployment. Nothing is static. Also, Russia uses a whole range of non radar detection, passive systems that rely on targets electronic and heat emissions to track and target. That's right, they leave a strong signature that is tracked by multiple integrated passive detectors. This ain't the USSR, this is a state that now has had 20 years of high technology, you can't just hide High tech in 2014.

Anyone who missed that NATO's steady build up around Russia's western flanks has been gathering momentum for years and "was" to include Ukraine & Crimea to the south, is not paying attention and is missing what this Ukraine fracas is about. As always, timing is difficult to predict but surrounding Russia to pick it off has been a long time plan of NATO's masters. That plan is now being put into effect to hide the collapsing western economies.

I cannot recall a geo-political dispute that is more false or more manufactured than this one and it has nothing to do Ukraine at all; they're just the inconvenient battleground.

The risks are huge and I predict that if the West & NATO start a war with Russia, millions will be out on the streets across America, Britain and Europe. Hopefully, the maniacs running our countries will finally be held to account. This will be the tipping point. Enough is Enough.

It is all about the drive on Moscow, and Inded, it is NOW because the clock is ticking of the fiat dollar hegemony. Look for the west to play this right to the brink of a nuclear war. Agreed. But methinks it's more than just the dollar crises, albeit that's one of the big 'uns.

Disastrous economic policy interventions to contain the multiple crises that emerged in the 2008 crash are now seen to have failed and the US/global economy continues to worsen with sovereign debt levels still out of control. The consequences are unfolding.

Starting foreign wars has long been a political tactic of distraction to rally the people round the flag and limit unrest at home. Argentina did exactly that in 1982 when their economy collapsed. The USG is doing the same with its wholly manufactured Ukraine crises to face-off Russia. Britain, Europe and Oz will ride on the coattails.

Smacker -

I agree with your analysis that we are seeing is really a continuation of the 2008 financial crisis.

Lax US banking regulation led the the creation of new financial products sold to global rubes seeking higher returns.

Collapse of US housing market revealed the ponzi for what it was but governments and central banks were unable to address the issues as they were too enmeshed in trying to keep the global economy afloat.

The attempted solution of money printing in an attempt to recapitalize the banks was no solution at all. Plus the Washington elite have no wish to understand the problem or resolve it. So they tinker round the margins with Syria, Libya, Ukraine in the belief that these are meaningful undertakings.

Meanwhile the system totters forward, increasingly top heavy, increasingly subject to internal contradictions, and increasingly unable to respond to new challenges, and increasingly seeking to place the blame on external "enemies" such as Putin.

China is also with RUSSIA,

That essentially leave the USA standing alone, and when I say USA, we're really talking about the ZIO-NEO-CON's that put OBAMA in power.

The reset is coming the US-MIL is inches away from
a COUP.

The ONLY support OBAMA get's is because his NEO-ZIO-CON controls the NSA, and they have a microscope up everyones ass, you all think the US-MIL likes this scenario?

They DON'T open your eyes.

Even Jim Rogers said today that the USA has never been closer to a violent revolution and COUP since the CIVIL WAR.

The US-MIL is sick and tired of being a sock-puppet for the NEO-ZIO-CON's, the Troops are tired, broke, and
de-moralized.

NEO-ZIO-CON McCAIN or LURCH don't speak for the
Troops.

I love it when all these Tom Clancy types come out of the woodwork.

The Serbs brought down an F-16 over Bosnia by twinkling a radar at it from miles away, just strong enough to get data, then sent this data over microwave link to the SAM battery underneath the jet.Fire the missle blind, then the seeker turns on about 500 meters from target,no time for evasive or jamming countermeasures. There was an AWACs flying around which probably was unhelpful as it designated the far radar as no threat, and the SAM batteries are mobile and change location.

One old SAM missle vs. One very expensive F-16 and complicated but successful retrieval of the pilot.

The Blackhawks over Mogadishu were brought down by RPG's fired at the tail boom, fitted with proximity fuses.

People shouldn't fixate on technology.Simple stuff and methods work too.

personally, I don't think either side is going to waste to much time or effort on conventional warfare.

to expensive, to messy and to time consuming as it would take years, maybe decades to sort this out "in the trenches" so to speak.

no, my guess is the nukes will come out pretty damn quick in the event this goes hot with one side hoping for the quick victory, the ultimate shock and awe. of course this isn't the cold war anymore, so there won't be any "day after" scenario where all the buttons get pushed at once and we end up with about thirty minutes or so to reflect on how things could have so wrong, so fast.

this is the new age of tactical global first strike, anywhere, anytime and so damn fast you won't know it happened until after it happened. disable, disrupt and destroy in five minutes or less all without a single boot on the ground. now what self respecting community organizer could pass that up? I don't imagine nuclear weapons have been this attractive as a problem solving tool to the power elite since, well, world war II.

so on the subject of aircraft does anybody know where the B-2's or the Strats have been making the rounds lately? now that's something to keep an eye out for.

No "Conventional Warfare" was Sadam's thinking process, too.

Regarding nukes, when you are the aggressor, Russia, you cannot very well play that card.

On the other hand, once we have destroyed his Navy and Airforce over the first week of conflict, decimated his ground forces and armor with air strikes and over the horizon targeted missile strikes... then you will see the Russian cowards pull out the Nuke Threat card.

It will be a moment of predictable Russian Disgrace.

Some debate over current status of system but the concept fits in with well with the game theory underlying MAD.

My thoughts? Apparently the F-8 Crusader/post top gun school had the highest kill ratio against Migs at 9:1.
---
This is what I found on Wiki answers:

What was the aircraft kill ratio during Vietnam between migs and American aircraft?
In: Vietnam War [Edit categories]
Answer:
A conservative estimate was about 2 to 1 in favor of the NVAF who were flyng MiG-17's up thru Rolling Thunder ('65-'68).
In 1969, after the USN's Top Gun school opened in California, the air kills reversed; and US airmen were being credited with 3 & 4 to 1 kills in favor of the US.

The best aerial kill ratio for a single jet fighter type, may have been accomplished by the USN's F8 Crusader (the last gunfighter) with a possible ratio of 19 to 1. Although most historians don't like to admit it, the MiG-21 was favored over the MiG-17 by NVAF pilots (and not the other way around). Most of the North Vietnamese pilots scored their aerial kills while flying the MiG-21.

The North's MiG-17's may have gotten their favorite "status" from the early war years, when that was the only jet that US fighter pilots encountered on a regular basis.

The North Vietnamese AF received their MiG-19's (J6 versions) strictly from Communist China in 1969, and their MiG-21's came strictly from the USSR. MiG-17's came from both super powers.

The MiG-19 was an excellent jet, but because it had twin engines, it was a maintenance headache for the ground crews.

Russian Navy Ships Take Part in Anti-Drug Drills in Caribbean

MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) – Two Russian navy ships, together with forces from Nicaragua and Honduras, have taken part in anti-narcotics naval exercises in the Caribbean, a spokesman for Russia’s Northern Fleet said Tuesday.

“The exercises focused on joint efforts to stop organized criminal groups and cut drug smuggling channels in territorial waters of Latin American states,” Northern Fleet spokesman Capt. 2nd Rank Yevgeny Kirillov said.

Russia sent a Vishnya-class intelligence ship, the Viktor Leonov, and the Nikolay Chiker support vessel to the exercises.

Police forces from Nicaragua and special police units from Honduras also took part.

Russia has started reviving its navy and strategic aviation since the mid-2000s, seeing them as a tool to project Russia’s image abroad and to protect the country’s interests around the globe.

May 11 there may be a vote to join Russia in Donetsk.

little is known about Pushilin. He has interviewed with a small number of media outlets only to give a confusing portrayal of a possible referendum in Donetsk. The vote is  reportedly planned for May 11, 2014, just two weeks before the presidential election for Ukraine. When asked how the vote would take place, he said, “There could be a vote of the people’s council [or] a public vote. It hasn’t been decided.”

Additionally, Pushilin said the vote would not be whether to join Russia, but rather to vote yes or no to the sovereignty of Donetsk. “It could mean federation or confederation with Russia…Ukraine, or even another country,” said Pushilin. “It could [also] mean full independence.”
