Pentagon Admits "No Solution" To Replace Russian Rockets To Launch US Military Satellites
While the US is quick to demand the rest of the world turn its economic back on Russia - especially the Europeans, it appears they are discovering - just as Putin warned, the world is considerably more inter-dependent than they thought. Following Chuck Hagel's orders to review the Air Force reliance on Russian rocket engines used to launch US military satellites, Bloomberg reports the Pentagon admits it "has no great solution" to reduce its dependence on the Russian-made engine.
As Bloomberg reports,
The Pentagon has no “great solution” to reduce its dependence on a Russian-made engine that powers the rocket used to launch U.S. military satellites, the Defense Department’s top weapons buyer said.
“We don’t have a great solution,” Frank Kendall, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, said yesterday after testifying before a Senate committee. “We haven’t made any decisions yet.”
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered the Air Force to review its reliance on the rocket engine after tensions over Russia’s takeover of Ukraine’s Crimea region prompted questions from lawmakers about that long-time supply connection.
United Launch Alliance LLC, a partnership of Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co., uses the Russian-made RD-180 engine on Atlas V rockets.
As Putin warned - apparently correctly...
“The US is certainly one of the world’s leaders. At some point it seemed that it was the only leader and a uni-polar system was in place. Today it appears that is not the case. Everything in the world is interdependent and once you try to punish someone, in the end you will cut off your nose to spite your face,” he said.

I don't know if you've ever experienced a live lift off ( something my kids will never see), but there is nothing like it. It's an amazing experience. As far as the Hubble goes, as an amature astronomer, the Hubble was a disappointment, but the fact we sent the shuttle up to fix it was incredible and the pictures it transmitted back are stunning.
I saw one of the last night launches across the water. It was absolutely breathtaking. Stone silence punctuated by a collective gasp in the crowd followed by cheers. I'll never forget it.
Glad you got to experience it. Cherish that memory, we will probably never experience anything like it again.

Oh, hell yeah. I was at the Cape for one of the lauches in the early 90s. My brother was going to Embry Riddle back then and we drove down for it in my old 69 GTO. I've also watched the Daytona 500 from the rooftop of an Embry Riddle dormatory (yes, you can still do that).
I got a LOT of shit checked off my bucket list and most of them never cost me a penny.
If my wife was in the room I'd tell you that the greatest experience of my life was watching my children being born. But, in reality, that's a tie with going up with the one of the guys in the Blue Angels. Going into space would be, hands down, #1.

When I was 16 my best friend and I were watching an old war movie (sadly the name escapes me) anyway there were a lot of dog fights and we started talking about how cool it would be to fly. Well neither one of us had ever flown so we scraped every penny we had together, 35 bucks, and we took it to a small local airfield were we went up to a guy who had a small Cessna and offered our 35 bucks for a ride. He looked at us like we were nuts, but we were persistent and we explained that we have never flown before. Well he finally relented and took us up for about an hour. My friend and I were grinning ear to ear with our faces plastered against the window. I'll never forget how cool that was. A kid couldn't do that these days, you would be branded a terrorist. This fucking country has gone to shit.
I saw the last mission, the Atlantis, take off in 2011 while standing on the shoulder of US1 at Titusville. There were low clouds that day and they wern't certain if it would get the go ahead. But at the last minute it was cleared for launch. It was only visible a few seconds before disappearing into the clouds. I had never seen a large rocket launch before, I happened to be in Orlando at the time and decided to take a chance and drive over to see. This was about 12 miles away I was told (from US1). It must be truly awesome from the viewing area from ~4miles.

When the organization was converted into a private company in 1999, the business was split into two parts: The bulk of the organization was converted into the commercial company, Inmarsat PLC, and a small group became the regulatory body, IMSO. In 2005 Apax Partners and Permira bought shares in the company. The company was also first listed on the London Stock Exchange in that year. In March 2008 it was disclosed that U.S. Hedge Fund Harbinger Capital owned 28% of the company. In July 2009, Inmarsat completed the acquisition of a 19-per-cent stake in SkyWave Mobile Communications Inc., a provider of Inmarsat D+/IsatM2M network services, which in turn purchased the GlobalWave business from TransCore.[ On 15 April 2009, Inmarsat completed the acquisition of satellite communications provider Stratos Global Corporation (Stratos)

Harbinger Capital
Harbinger was founded by its Senior Managing Director Philip Falcone and Harbert Management Corporation, a Birmingham, Alabama-based investment company that provided much of the original funding. Harbinger had funds under management of $26.5 billion (£13.4 billion) as of the end of June 2008. In 2009, Harbinger acquired the ownership of its funds from Harbert, although Harbert handled administrative functions for Harbinger for a short transitional period. Also in 2009, Harbinger acquired controlling stock of the Zapata Corporation and changed its name to The Harbinger Group Inc.
Harbinger has owned large stakes in The New York Times Company, Cleveland-Cliffs, and 28% stock ownership of satellite communications company Inmarsat. The company has also owned stakes in rival satellite operators SkyTerra and Terrestar.
Harbinger Capital, which owned Russell Hobbs, merged it with Spectrum Brands on June 16, 2010 for $661 million and now controls approximately 64% of the appliance maker, Spectrum.

Putin approves sale of newest S-400 air defense system to China

Moscow says this will give Beijing an edge in the airspace over the Taiwan Strait and the Diaoyutai islands disputed between China and Japan. China voiced strong opposition to Obama’s pledge a week ago in Tokyo to come to Japan’s defense in any conflict with China over the islands.
Russia willing to share this technology with China is a big move.

1) they didn't outsource their jobs abroad
2) they didn't get bogged down in endless costly wars of choice
3) they don't spend oodles of money on endless social/welfare programs
