On The Edge Of War: The Latest Russian And Ukraine Troop Movements
If Putin needed a pretext to finally drive across the Ukraine border, he got it today following first the death of nearly 40 pro-Russian protesters in Odessa during a confrontation between pro-Russia and pro-Kiev forces, and then, what appears to be a storming in progress right now by the Ukraine national guard of yet another separatist-controlled city in east Ukraine: Kramatorsk.
According to RT, Ukraine’s National Guard is storming the eastern town of Kramatorsk even as it has also resumed its special operation in Slavyansk, where two soldiers have been killed.
“The assault is starting now,” a Kramatorsk self-defense activist has told RIA Novosti by phone. Another activist told the news agency that the National Guard opened fire on self-defense forces.
Dozens have been killed or injured in Kramatorsk, a doctor told RIA Novosti. The medic added that the fighting has now stopped and all of those injured have been taken to hospitals in Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. At least two died on the way to the hospital, she said.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military’s special operation has resumed in the nearby town of Slavyansk. The headquarters of the people’s self-defense is under snipers’ fire, according to Itar-Tass. There are reports of injuries among protesters.
Recall that Putin has made it very clear that all the Kremlin needs to green light an operation in Ukraine is a pretext of "self-defense" for the pro-Russian citizens currently there being attacked by the local military, something which if the tables were turned, would have been classified as a civil war by the impartial western media.
So what does the theater of operations look like should Russia finally get involved?
The Washington Post is publishing a new map that shows, using information from the Royal United Services Institute, recent troop movements in the region. The graphic illustrates how military exercises conducted by Russia have left a big build-up of troops on Ukraine's border. It also shows Ukraine's own military moves to its borders with Russia and Moldova's Russian-dominated enclave, Transnistria.
It may be a long weekend.

I think the issue is a little different.
The problem with NG is that you need significant capital investment to move and store the stuff. When they first wildcatted in Pennsylvania they just dug earthen pits to hold the crude until they got a hold of enough old whiskey barrels to move the stuff to market by rail. Works OK for crude. Doesn't work at all for NG which just takes off into the atmosphere.
The result is that you could have a significant NG find in your backyard but if you are not adjacent to transport infrastructure then that gas is stranded gas. Building the necessary infrastruture is expensive. For smaller fields the capital investment compared to the productive life of the field renders the development uneconomic.
So Crash is correct in that Quatar is a major source of NG. I believe they have the world's large proven NG reserves at present. But having the NG means nothing if you lack the infrastruture to get it to market. Gas in Quatar - market in EU.
There was talk of running a pipeline north thrrough KSA, Syria, Turkey to the EU. Hence the reason for the conflict in Syria to topple the regime that stood in the way of this project. And also the reason Russia had a vested interest in propping up the Syrian regime. As along as Bashar al-Assad is in place then that pipeline is unlikely to get built and the Quatari NG does not make it to EU via pipeline which gives Russia a monopoly on the EU market.
But NG does not require pipelines to ship. You can create NGL processing units (called "trains") that take the gas and condense it into a liquid that can be transpoted by special ships able to maintain the cold liguid state. On arrival at destination the NGL is then sent ashore to another faciilty where it is re-gasified and then placed in storage for later delivery to customers via domestic pipeline.
Exxon has a major investment in NGL processing trains in Quatar. Given sufficent shipping capacity Exxon would profit if the EU sought to identify an alternate source to Russian NG. Shipping NGL from the US to EU would cost about $6 per mcf for a landed price of around $11 to $12 per mcf. I have no idea what the EU pays Russia for its gas but my bet is that it is less than that especially with Nordstream where the required pipeline infrastruture is already in place. Given the distance via ship transport I would expect the transport cost would be around $6 landed in the UK, perhaps half that if the NGL were landed in Italy.
I know the UK has been building facilities to land NGL due to the drop in domestic production from the North Sea. The UK is also tied into the continental pipeline system so NGL from Quatar could move by ship to the UK and from there into the pipeline system on the continent. I do not have details on French NG demand (they depend on a lot of nuke plants while Deutschland has closed its nuke plants in favour of alternatives). The major continental supplier is the Netherlands with the Groningen field but the Dutch are being careful with field production to ensure they do not damage the fields through over-production.
If Russia does move into Ukraine I wouldn't be suprised to see that followed by a western move on Syria / Iran. Russia gets entagled in its own backyard and while it is busy there the west rumbles Syria and takes out Iran. This would make Israel, KSA and Turkey very happy and allow Obummer to claim a strategic masterstroke. Then a pipeline gets built, Exxon makes lots of money, the Euros stay warm in winter, and everyone except the dead live happily ever after.
IIRC, Iran and Russia were also working on another Pipeline via IRQ, SYR, and TUR - which is what Mr. Assad has favored.
Hence the UKR Conflict may have tie-ins with SYR's Situation.
It would appear that New American Century''s (and other Profiteers') Targets stopped falling like Dominoes; and we're being able to see how FUBAR'd their Deep Seated Greed runs in their Veins.
Has anyone considered Negotiating Deals? Seems to me that if SYR had BOTH Systems in place, there wouldn't be much of a problem. Too bad someone thought of Regime Change as a required element to Pipeline Laying...

A former now retired colleague (who resides in "the wealthy end" of Cherkassy) was quite excited by the imminent prospect of Military Conscription.
His view is that, of all the locals of "Conscription age", well past 80% would immediately defect to the Russian side should they be involved in any action.
If this statistic is reflected throughout Ukraine, "Conscription" might be an effective way of providing troops and materials to "The Invading Force"

And that wave of Russian sentiment for war could come as soon as tomorrow morning, Moscow Time.

Will "go for the jugular". While reassembling Greater Russia Putin also wants to keep the destruction of valuable real estate to a minimum. He knows there will be some upfront costs, but in the long term he comes out a winner.

Funny how these days, the war starts, sides are delineated into simple red team/blue team arguments (capitalists vs commie, christians vs muslims, etc), then the groups they are really after are targeted for extinction. This isn't something that is easily recognizable to anyone who is not a believer but it is true nonetheless.
