On The Edge Of War: The Latest Russian And Ukraine Troop Movements

Tyler Durden's picture

If Putin needed a pretext to finally drive across the Ukraine border, he got it today following first the death of nearly 40 pro-Russian protesters in Odessa during a confrontation between pro-Russia and pro-Kiev forces, and then, what appears to be a storming in progress right now by the Ukraine national guard of yet another separatist-controlled city in east Ukraine: Kramatorsk.

According to RT, Ukraine’s National Guard is storming the eastern town of Kramatorsk even as it has also resumed its special operation in Slavyansk, where two soldiers have been killed.

“The assault is starting now,” a Kramatorsk self-defense activist has told RIA Novosti by phone. Another activist told the news agency that the National Guard opened fire on self-defense forces.

Dozens have been killed or injured in Kramatorsk, a doctor told RIA Novosti. The medic added that the fighting has now stopped and all of those injured have been taken to hospitals in Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. At least two died on the way to the hospital, she said.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military’s special operation has resumed in the nearby town of Slavyansk. The headquarters of the people’s self-defense is under snipers’ fire, according to Itar-Tass. There are reports of injuries among protesters.

Recall that Putin has made it very clear that all the Kremlin needs to green light an operation in Ukraine is a pretext of "self-defense" for the pro-Russian citizens currently there being attacked by the local military, something which if the tables were turned, would have been classified as a civil war by the impartial western media.

So what does the theater of operations look like should Russia finally get involved?

The Washington Post is publishing a new map that shows, using information from the Royal United Services Institute, recent troop movements in the region. The graphic illustrates how military exercises conducted by Russia have left a big build-up of troops on Ukraine's border. It also shows Ukraine's own military moves to its borders with Russia and Moldova's Russian-dominated enclave, Transnistria.

It may be a long weekend.

Well, with Joseph Goebbels as your source... how could anyone possibly argue with your contention.

However, I give you this..... from a Jew....

Putin is not invading. He knows it would be a wrong move. It would give a pretext for USSA to finally bring democracy and freedom to Syria. He knows, everybody who thinks knowz, that W.Ukraine is fucked and done. Just wait and it will fall to pieces and places it belongs. Or maybe not. No one really knows.

I've never been one for the punch-up.
But look, I really hate those nazis (nazis)
A certain something starts to wind me up;
I feel I hate it all so violently

When two swords slashing at each other
Only sharpen one another
And in the long run even he's your brother
Said even though that cunt's a nazi (nazi)

Always attack those things in someone else,
Reflections that you can't face in yourself,
To kill fascists because you see his gun
It makes you turn into a bigger one
Because...

Two swords slashing at each other
Only sharpen one another
And in the long run even he's your brother
Said even though that cunt's a nazi (nazi)

Are you fighting the Front,
or just fronting a fight
Sometimes it's hard to see your left from your right
Are we in anger, are we looking for peace
Or just tryin' to win the war...
...by killing all the enemy off
Just to kill the enemy off
Just to kill the enemy off
Just to kill the enemy off

And that happens between culturally and ethnically very similar nations. And also all the other artificial multicultural states like the USSR, Cechoslovakia or Yugoslavia are gone.

Even the Israelis have used the justification of "you can't keep standing armies on standby forever".It is expensive and bad for morale.Putin can move forward or he will have to watch his back, politically.Once his troops smash the Ukes it will be obvious why everyone has been wearing ski-masks.Someone should open up a cold-beer kiosk at the Kiev airport for all the thirsty Blackwater merc's jogging for their planes. If however Vlad drops an airborne division as a blocking force on the roads leading out Kiev, westbound, things could get interesting.

I am just going to give an opinion on this one, that's all it is is an opinion based on what facts I can get. I believe today is the official opening of the Ukrainian civil war. There has already been conflict, but a certain level of conflict that is too deep to be stepped back from easily has to be reached for a real civil war to be underway. I think today that level was reached. Odessa is not going to be forgotten and it sends a clear message that the Right Sector is going to begin to kill at an advanced level. Also, the Russian Ukrainian side showed it too is not going to stand by as Kiev's coup army moves east. Downing the helicopters was a message to Kiev that your going to be resisted at a new level. You almost have to conclude that we are now in open civil war. If Kiev continues massacres of their opponents, then Right Sector's supporters are likely to be targets who can expect the same treatment. I think East Ukraine will need 24 hours to digest the news and pictures from Odessa before they conclude that they are now marked for death. That ups the game.

Now we have reached the condition that the USA set as it's goal when it stage managed and funded the Right Sector Coup in Kiev. Push it to Civil War and get Russia to step in, this allows the USA to seperate Russia from the EU entity and prevent their former economic growth and cooperation and social contacts and mutual cooperation. This was too big of a threat to America's design on total domination. The EU Russia connection needed a wedge issue, Ukraine was taken down using paid nazis because these West Ukrainian Nazis were the only ones willing to work for the CIA for 40-50 Euros a day.

Odessa is probably the start of all out civil war.

Thoughts on your thesis:

1) Not sure about the helicopters being downed. Given that two days ago the Ukrainian;s blew up one of their own helicopters while attempting to arm it (and then blamed that on a Russian RPG) I suspect the helicopter crashes were due to pilot incompetence, bad maintenace or both.

2) If the helos were brough down by manpads or RPGs , both of which are fairly sophisticated weapons, how come the rest of the democratic resistance is armed with little more than flags and baseball bats? If resistance has access to RPGs I would expect they would also have access to significant amounts fo small arms. But this does not appear to be the case in any of the videos or reports from the scene.

3) I cannot see Putin delivering small arms (or any other arms) to the resistance. A man with a rifle and no training is simply a waste of a good rifle. Plus there is the problem of flooding an area with weapons and then having those same weapons turned against you. If you need to use force of arms then better they be arms in the hands of your own trusted troops.

4) The west appears deliberately intent on provoking Putin. Putin appears equally intent on demonstrating restraint and statecraft and seeking to avoid further bloodshed and escalation. To date it has been the junta who has disregarded the Geneva Accords while Kerry et al hurtle blame at Putin.

5) If Putin does intervene militarily then I bet we see illicit supplies of western arms to the Banderistas. The west provided arms and support to this same group in the yeara immediately following WWII and I think it likely thed do so again. The west will attemp to do in Ukraine what they did in Afghanistan following Russian intervention in that state.

6) Putin may have strong domestic support but I think he is smart enough to realize that if he lacks tacit support from the non-aligned nations and the other members of the BRICS then Russia ends up loosing resource markets, becoming isolates and being saddled with providing all the financial goodies expected by the resistance. If I thought I could double my salary and pension by occupying the local post office I would likely be in there like flynn. Putin likely knows this and is looking at the hit on his budget at the same time resource revenues are likely to contract and war spending increases coupled with capital flight or the loss of tech savy western partners and MNCs.

For 2), there is some recent video of Ukrainian troops defecting in the Slovyansk region with some weapons.  I have no idea how many of what weapons they defected with, but it is a possible explanation.

Hilarious!  Watching C-Span2 just now.  US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was asked by some Russian lady claiming to be a retired historian:

"Why, Mr. Hagel, after WW2 where the US and USSR were allies and friends, after these 69 years is it that the USA no longer sees Russia as a friend?"

Too funny!

Hey lady, the reason was Czechoslovakia, Romania, Poland, East Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Belarus...did I miss anybody...oh, that is right...Ukraine!  When you brutally invade a large number of free peoples under the pretext of some bullshit Communist Ideology, friendship tends to END!

The Russian leadership of today looks back with nostalgia on the former USSR.  And you people admire PUTIN, a man who is in direct pedigree to the former Soviet Checka!!  Are you people without shame?  What animals.

Perhaps you need to be reminded that the USSR did not invade these countries without prior agreement with Churchil and Roosevelt at Yalta, where Europe was divided by the Great Powers.  Stalin took not one inch more than was agreed to at Yalta.  Yes, these countries were invaded but it was the Allies who planned it, not just the USSR, and it is the Allies who must share responsibility for what was to come.

Indeed, you might even say more specifically it was collaboration between Roosevelt and Stalin (who were very friendly and of one mind about the conduct of the war) that was really responsible for the gift of Eastern Europe to the USSR.  Churchill did not approve, but went along in the end.  As I understand it, he wanted to pursue a path along the Russian border to prevent Moscow's taking of any part of Eastern Europe.

victor999...

The 'percentages agreement' or 'naughty document' was an agreement between Stalin and Churchill about the division of Eastern Europe... This agreement was made at the 4th Moscow conference and Roosevelt knew nothing about it (or, maybe Roosevelt did know about it but wanted plausable deniability). imo, Roosevelt did not know about the agreement.

" Churchill suggested that the Soviet Union should have 90 percent influence in Romania and 75 percent in Bulgaria; the United Kingdom should have 90 percent in Greece; in Hungary and Yugoslavia, Churchill suggested that they should have 50 percent each. Churchill wrote it on a piece of paper which he pushed across to Stalin, who ticked it off and passed it back.

"Might it not be thought rather cynical if it seemed we had disposed of these issues so fateful to millions of people, in such an offhand manner? Let us burn the paper", said Churchill.
"No, you keep it", replied Stalin."

MH-370 & OBAMACARE? Just a few days ago OBAMA was down in Malaysia, closing loose ends.

What was telling is the very company SERCO-GROUP that made the BUAP ( Boeing-Autopilot ) was SERCO-HONEYWELL, But what blows my brain is that SERCO also developed OBAMA-CARE ..

In July 2013 Serco was awarded a $1.25 billion contract to manage the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

>>> Early reports were that the FREESCALE KL-02 CHIP was to be the OBAMA-CARE chip, .e.g. every american to be 'tagged' for health reasons, best of all tracked in real-time by INMARSAT satellites owned by HW-BUSH.

Over in the UK SERCO is putting 'tagging' devices in every criminal, and down in Austrailia SERCO is running the prisons.

MY the BUSH/CIA family is busy. When they're not making new HITLERs, they're trying to take care of our health.

Sat, 05/03/2014 - 02:38 | 4723132 james.connolly
james.connolly's picture

SERCO HISTORY was RCA  (RADIO CORPORATION AMERICA) from USA, Another NAZI BUSH Holding company in UK going back to 1920's.

RCA UK, became SERCO the largest secret MI-6 company you never heard of,... Radio Corporation of America ( RCA) ... Nazi interests in the Silesian-American Corporation, long managed by ... Harriman, Bush and the others in the cabal had financed the buildup of Nazi war ... and not one word has been heard over any of the big commercial radio stations." ..

>>>

Sometimes described as the "biggest company you've never heard of", Serco was in celebratory mood just over a year ago, with profits surging after it had won a record number of contracts ranging from community healthcare in Suffolk to retaining the joint running of Britain's nuclear warheads store at Aldermaston.

But everything changed for the giant outsourcing conglomerate when it became mired in a series of scandals, saw its stock market value slump and was ignominiously ejected from the FTSE 100 index.

Nevertheless, it still employs 120,000 people in more than 30 countries, and, once you start looking, you will see its logo everywhere.

In Britain the group runs a huge range of government and other services, from rail franchises including Merseyrail, Northern Rail and London's Docklands Light Railway, to immigration removal centres and prisons – including the Thameside prison in south-east London that was criticised last year by the Howard League for conditions that were "truly alarming".

It has won a number of healthcare contracts as private involvement in the NHS increases, such as out of hours GPs in Cornwall – damned in a report by the House Of Commons public accounts committee that was prompted by reports in the Guardian and found Serco had replaced clinicians' on out-of-hours GP services in Cornwall with call-handlers without medical training.

It looks after school inspections in the Midlands and east of England. It manages the UK's ballistic missile early warning system on the Yorkshire moors and is in charge of traffic monitoring on England's motorways. In London it runs the "Boris bikes" cycle hire scheme. It also operates the National Nuclear Laboratory.

Around the world, Serco has hoovered up government and private contracts ranging from air traffic control in 11 states of the US and in the United Arab Emirates to parking-meter services in Chicago and driving tests in Ontario. In Australia it runs Great Southern Railways as well as ports, patrol boats and immigration services including an immigration centre on Christmas Island. Other big transport contracts include toll tunnels in Hong Kong and the metro in Dubai.

It provides IT support for the European Commission, the European Space Agency and Italian regional and central government; and engineering services at the European Particle Physics Laboratory (CERN) close to Geneva.

Serco began life in 1929 as a UK subsidiary of US electronics company Radio Corporation of America, providing services to Britain's burgeoning cinema industry. In the 1960s it won a maintenance contract from the Royal Air Force base at Fylingdales, which expanded into a bigger support contract with the RAF. Following a management buyout in 1987, RCA Services Limited was renamed Serco and a year later, it listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Read the BOOK "CHarlie Wilsons War", a story about how a little nobody Texas Congressman on his own got Stinger Missiles to Usama-Bin-Laden in early 1980's and brought RUSSIAN down.

RM, get the real book, its required reading by US State Department, it tells exactly HOW Alzheimer RAYGUN destroyed the Soviet EMPIRE.

Now jump  ahead today and the USA empire will soon collapse, and probably lose all colony's; Japan, Germany, ... PI, Hawaii, Alaska, ...

Does PUTIN want to get even? Fuck yes.

A gal I know in US State Department turned me on this book when it was first written, and I even met Charlie Wilson a few times at Soldier of Fortune in Vegas. Truth is all that is overrated..even the stinger..

Soviet was already downhill for a brick wall..and certain KGB predicted it to themselves over 10 year before...

At the time Soviet withdrew, they held far more territory than amerikans ever dared to think about getting close to..

Truth is nothing like amerikans were led to believe..

Result was huge number more innocents have died because of interferences there..

Real fucking big achievement....

author of this book also had a heart.

Charlie Wilson was running un-bridled, and of course all the while they were running Stingers to Afghan they were runing COCAINE to MENA-ARKANSAS, and gun's back to Nicaragua.

This CIA 'insiders' version of history, ... and if its NOT meant for the the ameriKKKan public.

I know you don't care, but some people do care, and SERCO is about to come to the USA and run FEMA camps. So you should care.

Serco-run Yarl's Wood has been subjected to heavy criticism by human rights campaigners amid reports of sexual misconduct by staff, women being detained for long periods of time and pregnant detainees being held without justification.

SERCO has done such a good job for OBAMACARE that OBAMA is going reward them at let them run US prisons. Right out of "V for Vendetta", it is truth is stranger than fiction.

Remember SERCO GROUP, is/was created by the SAME BUSH in 1920 that brougth HITLER to power, and passed on along with INMARSAT to HW-BUSH, and someday to VP Jeb Bush.

Aren't all Multinational, stock holder owned companies "Sociopathic" when it comes right down to their system for decision making?

Apparently there are 13 major share holders of SERCO who hold 63% of the stock:

Remember that "R", James! It's important.

But you make a coherent point when you say we no longer can "know the truth". James, propaganda is not the day to day news, usually, but is the editorial comment and the spin put on the facts. (When I say "USUALLY" I give a nod to the Russian' false claims some weeks ago of Ethnic Russians being singled out and attacked...those events are manufactured from whole cloth, of course, and in a ham-fisted manner, I might add.)

But the editorializing is the standard method of propaganda these days. So, James, if you can remember events, if you can grasp the context on your own, then propaganda and "spin" will really become obvious to you. Manipulation requires its victims to have no memory and no means of understanding historical context.

Like casting Russia as a good guy. Russia has never played the role of Good Guy, ever! Its frightening to think that propaganda could get folks to even give them the benefit of the doubt after all they have done as a people.

Now get that prescription filled, buddy.

What bothers me more than the situation in Ukraine is how certain all the basement dwelling posters here of one conspiracy or another.

I suggest that no one knows how this goes down or what all the visible and invisible forces are. There is a sort of insufferable arrogance in many of these posts that reflects an actual intellectual weakness or rational deficit.

I wish the people of the Ukraine well and in the end I hope that some sort of liberty and decency prevails.

1.) Nuland, Hillary, Kerry pay $5B USD for a coup

2.) Install new NEO-ZIO-CON leadership in KIEV

3.) Ukraine money collapses in value

4.) Cops go unpaid, and go home

5.) Everything turns to shit and free-loaders start stealing and burning down police stations

6.) nobody gives a fuck, and its every man for himself,

7.) NEO-NAZI groups with CIA gun's go wild in streets and kill innocent russian speaking business owners, ... looting pillaging.

8.) PUTIN step's in to PROTECT Russian Financial interest.

Where did it start? #1 is the correct answer, where will it end? When everyboy is dead, or WW3 has begun, or the MSM changes the subject to the CHINA/USA war, and UKRAINE is forgotten, but the anarchy will continue for years.

What part don't you fucking understand?

The EU/UN follows the BROKEN beer bottle option, if I can't have your beer, then nobody get's it, ... EU (CIA/MOSSAD) tried to STEAL UKRAINE, ... it didn't work out as planned, so now engineer a civil war, and destroy it, it was always about stealing the GAZPROM pipelines, if the CIA can't steal them intact, then destory them.

Now that push has gone to shove the Odessa port becomes a major strategic goal. As without Crimea and Odessa, the Ukraine -- of Kiev regime-- is without a port on Black Sea. That will be an awesome weakening of truncated Ukrainian state after the shooting match--whose outcome seems pretty clear today given the way the cards are stacked-- plays out. Putin will come out stronger "geo politically". It remains to see what clout the West can muster financially. Even there Obama and Merkel are not on same page. As for spill over into Asia and Middle East it stills remains to be seen; especially in Syria where the embers are burning hot!

Al Jazeera:

In the midst of the Ukrainian conflict, Sergey Lavrov has embarked on a Latin American diplomatic tour. After visiting Cuba earlier this week and Nicaragua on May 1, the Russian foreign minister headed to Peru and later Santiago de Chile to meet with newly elected Chilean president Michelle Bachelet.

This journey across the Atlantic, far away from the growing unrest [in Ukraine], might have surprised some. Yet, the choice of each country visited by Lavrov and the timing of such bilateral talks obey clear foreign policy logic.

While the change of regime in Kiev was viewed by Moscow as an illegitimate attempt from NATO forces to step onto Russia's traditional sphere of influence, Lavrov is keen on reminding the World that the Kremlin also possesses its own allies at the heart of what Washington considers its "backyard".

Consider the following potential change agents:

1) Russian primitive payment system arrives, with an asset backed Ruble currency

2) Saudis accept non-USD for oil payments, actually any major currency

3) Yuan full convertibility hits the scene, to occur in Shanghai Free Trade Zone

4) Indications of a new Dollar in the United States, with fraudulent backing

5) Significant shutdown of global mining industry, from lack of profitability

6) One major giant Western bank goes into failure, with three prime candidates

7) Major US retail (product, food) chains show empty shelves from interruptions

8 ) USFed revealed to huge QE volume through proxies, the hidden side revealed

9) COMEX & LBMA show no gold price, from lack of inventory

10) High ranking US or London banker is murdered, with no possible cover-up

Gemany has strong ties to both Russia and China and will not back Obama with more than words. The idea of America getting involved or jumping into a war in Ukraine would have been hard to imagine a  few years ago. As I write this we are engaged in a war of words but the potential for this to escalate into a shooting war is real. Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is becoming a reality.

As insane as it appears this could become the final outcome. The location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. It is silly to think Putin and Russia will back down. This means poking the bear is not a smart move. It should be noted the military of Ukraine is divided and extremely weak. I have often found it interesting that North Dakota was spared some of the subprime stuff because they have their own State Bank and like it that way.

Sometimes government does work.I once lived in WA where they have State liquor stores and those profits go back to the taxpayer and I never heard of a State liquor store being held up.

What America needs is for one state to say enough and secede.DC would have to make an example out of them (think Waco scenario). The problem here is that people would get a good glimpse of the man behind the curtain. That is why the Bundy ranch issue became important.People stick together, and they know that is the only way out of this mess is helping eachother. Sheriffs all over America are refusing to enforce these crappy laws coming from DC.

If the ethnic groups of the Ukraine region want independence, that is their own affair, enshrined in the UN charter (self determination). What Putin would like is a conventional conflict (after diplomacy has failed, and it has) where large numbers of civilians are spared.Sadly, the efforts of the Kiev mob make this an unlikely outcome.Generally, the brits were better at this diplomacy stuff,Partition here and there.Messy usually but sometimes unavoidable.Perhaps UN Peacekeepers on the ground? Worked so well in Bosnia (Srbrenica?).

Strange that the Kiev junta hasn't mentioned UN observers? And the world media? Strangely silent on any non-violent measures.

The Ukrainian currency is almost at toilet paper status, the Gold is gone I expect, and now they are bringing in conscription.

Somehow I am reminded of the old F Troop comedy series, where everyone lines up and takes one step backward when "Volunteers" are asked for.

Explain again, how many wars has Obama gotten us into?   And this is bad because???
