ECB's Mario Draghi Explains Why "Low-Flation" Means QE Is Coming Soon (He Promises, Maybe) - Live Press Conference

Tyler Durden's picture

The looming threat of a non-inflationary scenario for a group of nations that now have more debt-to-GDP leverage than ever before, more unemployed people that ever before, and more delinquent loans than ever before is indeed a worry for the ex-Goldman Sachs banker, but - so far - Draghi has been "all mouth and no trousers" in the local vernacular. Will he re-promise QE? Negative rates? OMT? Jawbone the EUR down as yet another set of algos buying his bullshit? We'll see...

Conference highlights:

  • DRAGHI SAYS MODERATE RECOVERY PROCEEDING AS EXPECTED
  • DRAGHI SPEAKS IN BRUSSELS AT MONTHLY PRESS CONFERENCE
  • DRAGHI SEES PROLONGED PERIOD OF LOW INFLATION
  • DRAGHI SAYS INFLATION TO RISE GRADUALLY THEREAFTER
  • DRAGHI SAYS UNDERLYING PRICE PRESSURES SUBDUED
  • DRAGHI SAYS SUDUED INFLATION OUTLOOK EXTENDING INTO MEDIUM TERM
  • DRAGHI CITES LOW INFLATION, HIGH DEGREE OF UNUTILIZED CAPACITY
  • DRAGHI SAYS UNUTILIZED CAPACITY IS SIZEABLE

But the punchlines:

  • DRAGHI: ECB READY TO ACT SWIFTLY WITH FURTHER EASING IF NEEDED

By act, he of course means talk.

  • DRAGHI SAYS ECB READY TO CONSIDER UNCONVENTIONAL INSTRUMENTS

Like... talking even more. It's odd how "whatever it takes" to talk the Euro down no longer seems to work...

He also loves to use the word "protracted". Add that to your list and it will be even more fun.

The Euro is going to rise soon very strong compared to the US Dollar since China is not anymore intervening to keep the Euro atound 1.35.   China has devalued its Currency against the USD but not against the Euro.  So its now the problem of Euroland. Chinas advice ist let the US Dollar go down to 5.0 for 1 Euro. That is going to boost the Euroland economy because oil and gas is then dirt cheap. That is going to harm Russia and this is what the US is looking for. So evreybody gets his beating. Merry Christmas.

Depends on where you eat.  If you actually have to make food, prices are going up and portions are getting smaller.

But if you eat at nothing but 5 stars, the prices have held pretty steady lately.

What is so amazing to see is that the money of an economic dodo zone is climbing High... Why?

Answer : 'Cos the unlimited printing of rival monetary zones, aka FED/UK/JAP/CHina creates a state of permanent turbulence and currency wars for the hot money getting hotter in Zirp carry trades generating "paper" profits that have to be skimmed off and parked somewhere.

What better place than in a calm, rich, seeming nirvana land where German might pulls the peripheral rabble of sovereigns and over indebted banks; these last being the nexus of current problem and thus pervasively prevalent like syphilis all over the world; where the financial armies piss their derivative soup.

Euro sovereigns look juicy in these meager times even if by buying them you kill the real growth as the Euro currency points further North!

Can Eurozone take all this influx of hot HFT generated money that kills the real economy of Club Med?

Thats why Draghi is there like the Monetary Pope to decide during battle who God calls his own !

Inflation may begin to take hold before he gets the chance foe more QE. Never before has mankind diverted such a large percentage of wealth into intangible products or goods.  I contend this is the primary reason that inflation has not become a major economic issue.

The modern economy is loaded with interwoven contracts reeking of contagion. If faith drops in these intangible "promises" and  money suddenly flows into tangible goods seeking a safe haven inflation could soar even as debts go unpaid and promises are left unfilled. This could really shake up the world, more on this subject in the article below.
