US Holds Massive Nuclear Weapons Exercise "To Deter And Detect Strategic Attacks" Days After Russian Drill

Tyler Durden's picture

Late last week, in what should not have been a surprise to anyone (because supposedly it was announced "far in advance") but was a major shock due to its intensity and expansiveness, Russia held a massive "simulated massive nuclear attack" drill, coming at a time just ahead of the Donetsk referendum, which may have been pre-scheduled and for foreign policy reasons was hailed as a "non-event", but judging by the amount of production that went into the accompanying video clip, this particular drill was dripping with symbolism aimed squarely at NATO and the US.

So now it is America's turn to retaliate. As the U.S. Strategic Command reported earlier, the US will conduct Exercise Global Lightning 14 from May 12-16 in coordination with other combatant commands, services, and appropriate U.S. government agencies "to deter and detect strategic attacks against the U.S. and its allies."

Stratcom was quick to point out that Exercise Global Lightning 14 has been planned for more than a year and is based on a notional scenario.  It also added that the "timing of the exercise is unrelated to real-world events" but only those who believed that Russia massive nuclear drill was also unrelated to world will fall for this particular embellishment. As Defense One observes, according to Mark Schneider, a former U.S. Defense Department nuclear strategy official, told the Washington Free Beacon that Russia’s drill last week seemed aimed at sending a message of “nuclear intimidation” to the United States and NATO over Ukraine. He noted that Moscow typically stages its atomic exercises in the fall.

Meanwhile, Romania on Saturday sought clarification from Russia on its official policy following a tweet from a high-profile Russian minister that warned he might try to enter Romanian air space in a heavy bomber, Reuters reported.

After a plane he was a traveling in was blocked from entering Romanian air space, Russian Deputy Prime Minister  Dmitry Rogozin sent out a tweet that stated, “Upon U.S. request, Romania has closed its air space for my plane. Ukraine doesn’t allow me to pass through again. Next time I’ll fly on board Tu-160.” Rogozin, who supervises his country’s large weapons industry, is under U.S. and European Union sanctions.

The Romanian foreign ministry requested that Russia specify whether the deputy prime minister’s tweet represented “the Russian Federation’s official position.”

Romania “believes the threat of using a Russian strategic bomber plane by a Russian deputy prime minister is a very grave statement under the current regional context,” the ministry said

However, Russia was last week - now it's America's turn: the units included in the US exercise are bomber wings that will fly approximately 10 B-52 Stratofortresses and up to six B-2 Spirit bombers "to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness in the training scenarios throughout the continental U.S."

So if you see a massive nuclear bomber flying overhead with a full nuclear armament, don't panic - tis but a drill.

“This exercise provides unique training opportunities to incorporate the most current technology and techniques in support of our mission.  Continued focus and investment in our strategic capabilities allow USSTRATCOM to deter, dissuade, and defeat current and future threats to the U.S. and our allies,” said Adm. Cecil Haney, commander, U.S. Strategic Command.

Those curious can find more information at USSTRATCOM Public Affairs, (402) 294-4130, or via email: pa@stratcom.mil.

We, on the other hand, will await the YouTube clip that goes with Global Lightning 14 and grade it on content, difficulty, and artistic creativity. After all we already have the Russians as a benchmark.

Germany had surrendered to Russia 4 months prior to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The war was over. Japanese naval fleet was completely decimated. The country was done. Conventional bombing had leveled them to the point where there were no strategic targets left, hence the atomic bombings targeting civilian population - the areas where people concentrated to be safe from all the deadly action. There was nothing else left to bomb. But don't tell that to Manhattan project team, who had just finished 2 bombs few months behind schedule. Don't tell it to scientiests curious to compare effects of Uranium and refined Plutonium detonation at different altitudes. Don't tell it to the Navy who had been practicing runs since Nov 1943 and had B-series bombers modified exclusively for the task.

The war ain't done until we say so!

BORING. Russian military 'exercise'. American Military 'exercise', it's so played out. It's all a great show put on to scare the people and drum up a little nationalistic support. Russia isn't going to launch a first strike and neither are we. There will be no nukes, and no hot war either.

Instead, Russia will get a large swath of Ukraine and the West will get a large swath of Syria. The west will build a pipeline through Syria to get oil and gas into Europe, Russia will sell to China. Everyone wins.

Follow the money and power play here. Russia wins with a pipeline to China because China pays it's bills. Russia won't have to subsidize oil/gas sales to them like it does to Ukraine and several other eastern block nations. They also get a better warm water port, one that's attached to Russia. Russia wins in these areas.

The West and the Saudi's get Syria. Iran is weakened if Syria falls. The west gets a pipeline of cheap Arab oil and gas pumped straight into the EU. And the petro dollar lives another another day. The west wins in these areas.

Don't think for a second that the people in charge (the people making the deals/money) are stupid enough to let a hot war get started over something as silly as ideals....

The actual history of the Cold War records several times when war almost got started by an "accidental" series of events. Twice in the history of the Cold War, only the decision of one Russian officer stopped that war from going hot. There are a couple thousand atomic bombs kept ready to use within a moment's notice, and tens of thousands more held in reserve. The problem of "use it before you lose it" constantly haunts the military strategies.

I wish that I could believe your view, InvalidID. However, I think you are naive about the degree to which the ruling classes have become criminally insane, and the degree to which the basic background problems are getting worse, faster.

OF COURSE, starting a world war using weapons of mass destruction would be utterly irrational and insane. However, in my view, that is a correct description of how our "civilization" actually behaves!

P.S.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEL45ffs2x4

Thirteen Days (2000)

A dramatization of President Kennedy's administration's struggle to contain the Cuban Missile Crisis in October of 1962.

In order to appreciate my point of view, it is necessary to seriously consider that the assassination of Kennedy was then deliberately covered up. I am not sure who actually did what, nor why. However, I have no doubt that the official story was absurd, and, for sure, there was a deliberate official layer of lies which stopped more truth from being discovered. Therefore, today we are looking at a situation where there is NO Kennedy, nor anybody else like him, but rather a Quisling political puppet as President.

Furthermore, the official story about what happened on 9/11/2001 is absurd, and there has obviously been an official effort to prevent proper investigations of that inside job, false flag attack, from ever happening, so that we may never be able to discover the truth regarding 9/11.

The problematic conclusion is that the people controlling the government of the USA now are far worse than President Kennedy was. That the real world is now controlled by much more severe criminal insanities than during the Cold War era is the conclusion that necessarily follows from believing that President Kennedy's assassination was never properly investigated, and that the events on 9/11/2001 were never properly investigated, because in both cases the criminals were able to control the investigations of their crimes, and therefore, were able to get away with committing those crimes, and all of the consequences which followed from having been able to get away with doing that.

On the basis of that belief, the real world today is far more criminally insane than it was during the Cold War era between the USA and the USSR. Any optimism based on still presuming that the people that control the people that control the governments of NATO are rationally sane does not appear to me to be justified.

P.P.S

Only on Web sites like Zero Hedge do I find that the majority of people say things that make sense to me. When I look at the mass media "news" in the North America, that appears to me to be NUTS! Of course, that also supports my view that we are actually living in a criminally insane civilization. The ruling classes and those they rule over are components of one social system. They are like bookends, or mirror images that reflect back at each other. That is why I find the mass media "news" being NUTS is another strong indication that an utterly irrational and insane world war could start, and go out of control. I do not think that there is anything I could do to prevent that, nor anything that I could really do to prepare for that either.  I assume that I would not survive long ... Writing useless comments about it seems to be nothing more than a kind of psychological therapy, to try to cope with what actually can not be coped with!

War is a consumer whose necessities are so imperative that they become superior to all questions of legal and

 financial restriction.

legalists and financiers, although their existing systems tend inevitably to produce wars,

are so afraid of them, and why war, terrible in itself, has so often released humanity from

bonds which threaten to strangle it. As a result of this situation, the bounds which are

placed upon production for war purposes are defined by intrinsic forces and not by

artificial limitations. That is to say, in order to maintain a connection between finance and

production, finance has to follow production instead of, as in the normal case, production

having to follow finance. The extension of production to its utmost intrinsic limits,

therefore, involves an extension of finance at a rate out of all proportion to that which

obtains in the normal course of events, and this extension at once reveals the artificial

character of normal finance. It has been pointed out at some length, and probably

sufficiently, that the Gold Standard, on which British finance was supposed to be based,

broke down within a few hours of the outbreak of war. That is important; but it is only

the first step, just as the Gold Standard itself is only one aspect of a system of finance in

which currency is the basis of credit. What is more fundamentally important, is to

observe that immediately production is expanded at

anything like its possible rate,

the idea that the financial costs of that expansion can be recovered in prices is seen in itsfull absurdity

This is a short version of the scenaio used in the 1979 documentary film, FIRST STRIKE, which examined how the Soviet SS-18 missile force together with submarine launched missiles might be used to destroy our strategic forces in a surprise, preemptive attack."

The "madmen theory of war" has been fully realized by the development of weapons of mass destruction, which have resulted in precariously balanced ways to barely cope with their existence, being appropriately called MAD: Mutual Assured Destruction. That MAD militarism operates in conjunction with the MAD monetary system. The combined money/murder systems that exist today are two kinds of MADness, that everyone has no other choice but to be stuck inside. The first is the MADness of weapons of mass destruction, and the second is the MADness of Money As Debt.

The MADness of Money As Debt automatically gets worse, faster, driving numbers which have become debt insanities. That debt slavery system is based on enforced frauds, which finally depend upon the military powers of governments (that are actually dominated by the banksters), which is again another form of MADness, that of Mutual Assured Destruction, which constantly threatens to cause death insanities.

DOUBLE WHAMMY MADNESS:

DEBT SLAVERY, BACKED BY WARS BASED ON DECEITS.

The REAL world operates through globalized electronic frauds, in the form of Money As Debt, while that is backed up by atomic bombs, by Mutual Assured Destruction. Those combined money/murder systems developed through thousands of years of history, while, within one human lifespan, the technologies which enable those systems have become trillions of times more capable and powerful, yet nothing else has happened than those systems have continued to grow their exponentially accelerating MADness. Both the ruling classes, and those they rule over, can be mostly counted on to continue to deliberate ignore their runaway MADness!

CIVILIZATION IS NOW CRIMINALLY INSANE!

I remember when every other building was marked as a fall out shelter, the drills at school and the term MAD being the inevitable end of the world.

then the 90's hit and everything changed, we kind of breathed a sigh of relief, of course not long after we got aircraft being highjacked with box cutters and being flow into buildings by terrorists who apparently couldn't even pilot Cessna's. thus began the never ending "war on terror", but still at least it wasn't Russian nukes raining down on the WTC...

and there is the rub, we all forgot about the most important part, sure the cold war ended but everybody kept thier nukes. in fact, we never really stopped pointing them at each other, all that really changed in the last 25 years is that we can now deliver them in ways that were not possible back when MAD was first coined...now instead of land based silos and 30 minutes to get right with your maker, it's five minutes from a sub or a bomber and you won't even know it happened until after it's over.

there was maybe a brief but golden opportunity to eliminate the possibility of this ever occurring but the PTB's just waved as that moment passed by, and now here they are playing with fire again.

so long as the weapons exist somebody, sooner or later, is going to use them.

To those of us who would rather not have a nuclear was it is not all that reassuring to hear how busy we are practicing to get ready to destroy life as we know it. The idea of America getting involved or jumping into a war in Ukraine would have been hard to imagine a  few years ago.

As I write this we are engaged in a war of words but the potential for this to escalate into a shooting war is real. Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is becoming a reality. As insane as it appears this could become the final outcome.

The location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. It is silly to think Putin and Russia will back down. This means poking the bear is not a smart move. It should be noted the military of Ukraine is divided and extremely weak. More about this subject in the article below.

I have often wondered why a Russian plumber would want to kill me an American plumber.

We are both busy with work and family, any spare time either of us have we go fishing, hunting or anything that ends in an “ing”,

It reminds me of a quote a French speaking Vietnam vet said about meeting an NVA prisoner who spoke French,  “so your countries farmers are over here fighting our countries farmers”

There won't be a nuke war this time but there will be someone crossing the line

or should I say trapped into crossing the line, mistakes will be made

irrigardless, Russia will take all of Ukraine and after that some more of the Eastern block

This may be the time that Russia embarrases the US, perhaps willing to go where the US won't

It seems like now Russia and China are ready to make their big move

Seems like there is no way out. I guess we fell into our own trap.

Well, I remember that the chow in SAC alert facilities was top notch - great omelets. The crews had to stay there when on alert rotation, so they had everything inside the wire. My last base was SAC KC-135 refuelers - always kept a couple on alert. Buffs had enough fuel to get aloft with a bomb bay full of goodies (less fuel = more goodies), then tankers top it off for the sortie.

Thanks Gen. LeMay, wherever you are.

Billions of dollars wasted on a dick swinging contest, lol, fortunately the money can just be printed and tossed on top of the US peoples debt to pay back sometime in the future so no worries there.

Old John McCain is probably getting a stiffie over all of this nuclear dick-swinging.  This is probaby the first one he's had since he was strafing children working in Vietnamese rice paddies.  I just hope old Johnny's effeminate man crush, Lindsey Grahan, is there to service him if WW3 starts and he shoots a wad.

I had the strangest experience on Saturday, at a ladies' tea I went to.  A close friend of mine, a 66 y.o. grandmother who is an utter political ignoramus, beyond imagining in her ignorance, and also no sort of cynic at all, told me that she thought that the media was treating Putin badly.  That she could see that he had arguably legitimate interests, but that the media were just making it all look one-sided.  I told her that all the mainstream media pieces that I was reading, read just like propaganda  -  I mean like cheap, obvious propaganda  -  and she agreed.  I nearly fell out of my chair.

I loathe Putin, but I don't appreciate being fed kiddy-level propaganda that even my friend can see though.

And why do you "loathe Putin" ?

Because the MSM had told you to.

Wow, what a bizarre assertion.  Here I am reading and posting on ZH; I assert that the MSM is a veritable tissue of propaganda, and you infer that I must be a real MSM-lover and follower.  I guess you didn't actually read my post.

‘We kill people based on Cellphone Metadata’ – Former CIA Director

“Of course knowing the content of a call can be crucial to establishing a particular threat. But metadata alone can provide an extremely detailed picture of a person’s most intimate associations and interests, and it’s actually much easier as a technological matter to search huge amounts of metadata than to listen to millions of phone calls. As NSA General Counsel Stewart Baker has said, ‘metadata absolutely tells you everything about somebody’s life. If you have enough metadata, you don’t really need content.’

“When I quoted Baker at a recent debate at Johns Hopkins University, my opponent, General Michael Hayden, former director of the NSA and the CIA, called Baker’s comment ‘absolutely correct,’ and raised him one, asserting,‘We kill people based on metadata.’

The politicians and bankers are absolutely crazy to let things escalate to this extent. They must have some fantasy that they will be taken safely underground during a nuclear war. That ain't how it will work. The people really in charge of the military aren't going to be needing any politicians from societies that no longer exist. They are not going to need them breathing their air and eating their food and drinking their water. If I were a Washington D.C. politician I would presume that if the SHTF I would have a very short future. They are choosing their own fate by not enforcing the Constitution of the United States of America. How could judges and people that are not stupid people be such idiots?
