Russia Retaliates: Blocks GPS, Bans US Use Of Its Rocket Engines

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as Russia had promised, sanctions were not effective and so they went straight to targeted bans. On the heels of The Pentagon admitting that they had "no solution" to replacing Russian rocket engines in the launch systems for US military satellites (as we have covered extensively), Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin this morning announced:

  • *ROGOZIN: RUSSIA TO HALT U.S. GPS BASES IN RUSSIA ON JUNE 1:IFX
  • *RUSSIAN BAN ON ROCKET USE FOR US MILITARY SATELLITE LAUNCHES: IFX

He further added that Russia will not extend its partnership in the International Space Station beyond 2020 (which suggests Russia does not expect a quick resolution to the current tensions).

As RT reports,

Moscow is banning Washington from using Russian-made rocket engines, which the US has used to deliver its military satellites into orbit, said Russia’s Deputy PM, Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of space and defense industries.

According to Rogozin, Russia is also halting the operation of all American GPS stations on its territory from June 1.

Russia currently hosts 11 ground-based GPS stations, the Deputy PM said.

The move comes after the US refused to place a signal correction station for Russia’s own space-based satellite navigation system, GLONASS, on American territory, he explained.

This is a major problem for the US military because (as Bloomberg reports),

The Pentagon has no “great solution” to reduce its dependence on a Russian-made engine that powers the rocket used to launch U.S. military satellites, the Defense Department’s top weapons buyer said.

“We don’t have a great solution,” Frank Kendall, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, said yesterday after testifying before a Senate committee. “We haven’t made any decisions yet.”

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered the Air Force to review its reliance on the rocket engine after tensions over Russia’s takeover of Ukraine’s Crimea region prompted questions from lawmakers about that long-time supply connection.

United Launch Alliance LLC, a partnership of Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co., uses the Russian-made RD-180 engine on Atlas V rockets.

As Putin warned - apparently correctly...

“The US is certainly one of the world’s leaders. At some point it seemed that it was the only leader and a uni-polar system was in place. Today it appears that is not the case. Everything in the world is interdependent and once you try to punish someone, in the end you will cut off your nose to spite your face,” he said.

How is it that the US does not have it's own rocket engines and we need to rely on the russians?  Whoever thought this was a good idea should be strung up.. At one time we were leaders in space technology.. now all we make is Angry Birds and Facebook..

This is from the wiki and is indicative of everything that is jacked about this:

"The military planned to close the M1 Abrams factory in Ohio from 2013 to 2016 to save over US$1 billion. In 2017 the plant would reopen to upgrade existing tanks. The downside to the three-year plant closing is the loss of the skilled human capital required to build the M1. These types of job skills must be learned on the job as the building is too unique to offer any type of educational program in a trade school environment.[40]"

I was not making a comment on when the program was shut down.  It was a comment about the stupidity of shutting and reopening the facility to do the next series of block updates.  Short term thinking at it's finest.  Save a billion by shutting it down, spend 1.5 in reopening costs.

Those stupid Russkies, GPS isn't important cuz everyone knows the world is flat and the sun revolves around the United States of America.  As for the rockets, the US can just pull space shuttle Discovery out of the Smithsonian and strap on some surplus warp drives from the Star Trek prop department.  These pointless Commie sanctions will have no effect on American plans to drill the moon for cheese.

Space exploration is no laughing matter.  Based on analysis of Moon rocks, there is strong evidence of Havarti just below the Moon's moldy exterior.  The US could have made drilling efforts much easier by creating a wormhole, but that would pose a perception problem when marketing the cheese for export.

NASA scientists were able to make Mars exploration feasible with a few simple revisions to their calculations.  Previous estimates placed Mars at approximately 34 million miles from Earth.  Fortunately, mathematicians on loan from the Bureau of Labor Statistics were able to pull Mars within a few thousand kilometers by converting to the metric system.

As everyone knows, Mars has been baking in the hot sun for 5999 years because the Earth borrowed its atmosphere.  That means the crackers just below its surface are ready for extraction, US scientists are anxious to test for water because they could be in danger of going stale.  The Mars Rover is busy rooting out the best mining sites, much like a pig sniffing for truffles.

Moon cheese and Mars crackers are the best hopes of pulling the US economy out of its slight recession.

I don't think it is BHO's fault. The deterioration of the U.S.-Russian Federation relationship has been going on for a while, e. g. NATO's attack on Yugoslavia, Georgian invasion of South Ossetia, etc. Imho, it has to do with the 'Deep State' rather than the President of the U.S.

Vlad is too cool headed and smart to make a dumb move like that.  He and the Chinese know the US is self destructing fast enough.  All he has to do is wait it out.

They can keep pushing for a new reserve currency.  They can build their own swift system.  Eventually the debt and decay will bury the US.

Perhaps  - but I don't buy it.

getting back to the Delta IV - the production plant for its core engines can produce 50 ~ a year at max production.

However as a result of labour arbitrage or the stripping of the former Soviet union of its spare parts this production plant does not operate at anything like its full capacity......this results in a much higher rocket engine unit cost........etc etc.

We may be seeing a reversion back to some sort of new Fordism in the US of A.

Think of it this way. It would be little difficulty to encase the circuitry for rocket-control in plastic, or some insulator, then encase that in any other number of metals.
The purpose: now you can't easily x-ray it and if you try to take it apart, you'll ruin it completely.
That nixes reverse-engineering perhaps except for the most cautious & determined. Add reservoirs for corrosive chemicals opened only on cutting/grinding to reverse engineer and you're done.
Then combine this with a low-cost offer so Murrikinz get lazy and forget how to make such things while buying from their Russian provider and suddenly after enough years you have no engineers left with practical experience making the damn things.

As for global warming, if you buy into the hoax that it's a hoax, you can't read a thermometer.
