"Political Earthquake" - Nigel Farage "Big Winner" In Local Elections

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday we highlighted the European people's growing 'revulsion' against Europe and overnight we got yet another confirmation that the status quo - despite record low bond yields and record high stock and real estate prices - are losing their grip on control. Having taken the lead in the polls last week, UKIP's Nigel Farage has scored a major victory in local elections in England with early results pointing to considerable gains for the euro-skeptic party:

  • UKIP GAINS 20 SEATS IN EARLY ENGLISH LOCAL-ELECTION RESULTS
  • U.K. TORIES LOSE 20 SEATS IN EARLY LOCAL-ELECTION RESULTS

As Reuters reports, one MP noted "I think Nigel Farage for quite a lot of those people is just a big sort of two fingers stuck up at what they feel is a sort of hectoring, out-of-touch elite."

As Reuters reports,

Britain's anti-EU party UKIP made strong gains in local elections in England, siphoning support from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives as it capitalised on discontent about immigration and mainstream politics.

The gains by the UK Independence Party, which wants Britain to leave the EU, will pile pressure on Cameron to toughen his approach to Europe and alarm some in his party who worry UKIP could scupper the Conservatives hopes of winning next year's national election.

The strong support for UKIP indicated by early local council results suggests the party could also do well in elections to the European Parliament, also held on Thursday.

...

Farage told reporters he was cheered by the early results and thought they were a good platform to challenge for seats in the 2015 national election.

"Looking at the average vote shares across the country, and without wishing to count any chickens before they're hatched, it looks pretty good," he told reporters.

...

"I think Nigel Farage for quite a lot of those people is just a big sort of two fingers stuck up at what they feel is a sort of hectoring, out-of-touch elite," Jeremy Browne, a Liberal Democrat lawmaker

...

The European elections were held on the same day, but the results will not be announced until Sunday evening, in line with the rest of the EU. They will determine the political persuasion of Britain's 73 lawmakers in the 751-seat European Parliament.

...

"There's been a vote for UKIP and that sends us a very clear message that people have concerns about immigration, about welfare, about schools and skills of course," said Michael Gove, the Conservative education minister.

"We will pay attention to those concerns."

Change - it appears - is coming.

Go Nigel Go!

Nigel's lacin' the 'skates, pads and jersey' to go play right guard in the professionals versus the EU bush league.  Can't wait to watch him on the ice.

Protip:  Don't forget to pass to the left and keep the stick tight and down.  If you feel heat on you, come back in the fence and the defense will drop whatever is chasing you to put it the box.  Try to get their star players over the line.  Spit, name call, talk about their mother; doesn't matter.  Get them to chase you so D can break their star roster like dry twigs and give their owner a stroke.

By game seven all they've got are professional bench warmer wearing double bladed skates and the rest are double fisting rye on the beach on medical leave watching bikini's.

Game on!

That's because The Netherlands already had their "Farage Moment" twice (Pim Fortuyn, Geert Wilders).

When you figure out that your protest vote will only make another nutjob rich you won't do it a third time.

My condolences to the UK people: if you really think that your vote - no matter who you vote for - has ANY effect then you still did NOT wake up.

You discount the possibility of the no-vote, refraining from voting as a act of no confidence in the electoral system which has the premise that one must vote for one, or more,  of the given options.

I will pass on the given opportunity to call you stupid.

A lot of people don't vote because they simply don't care and their lives aren't all that bad so.. The Dutch have seen their protest votes go to waste, most people enjoy a decent wage, and they aren't all that scared of muslims anymore, hence the no vote/liberal vote.

Stop calling people stupid. Trolls do that, and no-one wants to be seen as a troll.

In 'american' societies, that kind of motive for absence of voting is so feeble, you can sweep it away, in a vast 'american' move of hand, it does not exist.

'Americans' usually cease to vote when they are forced to admit they are no longer part of the winning sides, when no matter the vote they cast, they are thrown in the side of the loser.

That is when 'americans' no longer vote, when, no matter the vote they cast, they no longer see their personal situation improve when being on the winning side.

Loser even when casting the winner vote.

Ron Paul struck a chord with many but Farage has the charisma and oratory skills required to break through the dunderheads of the masses.  Actually, he's quite entertaining as well as being right on much of the time.   Look at Obama (well, that's painful I know), but he was an empty suit with oratory skills and it worked.

Results keep rolling in.  UKIP has now picked up 115 local council seats with less than 50% counted.  They had hoped for 90.   I imagine they've won the European Parliament elections in Britain by these results but tallies on that not released until Sunday.

The British establishment is so pissed off.  You should see the coverage on the MSM there.   The Farage guy is treated even worse than Ron Paul.  At least they've exposed themselves of being mouthpieces for the establishment and a good segment of the population isn't going along with the brainwashing.   They continue using the "racist" meme for those opposing open door immigration policies -- just like here in the USSA.  At least in Britain it has ceased to work.

The best part of the UKIP surge was watching the faces of the acolytes and suckups of the three main gangs (parties) i.e. Members of Parliiament as UKIP became all the media were talking about.

They were shocked. They knew there would be some statement made, but not that loudly.

The leaders of the three main gangs (parties) were being asked about UKIP first, then about how they did.

Watching the faces of those suckups, Euro-sluts and sellouts as UKIP owned the night made this election night, even though this isn't for the big prize (Westminster) the most satisfying in a very long while.

Yep, the other party's bigwigs see their future gravy train roll out of the station. When the politicians become unpopular or are tired and pass there sell by date, the parties ship them off to Europe AKA the Kinnocks ( retired with £10 million each and a nice pensions) and Ms Ashton ( yep the one talking about the snipers shooting both sides in the Ukrainian dispute in the Back). If you stab any of the party leadership in the back you are sent to Europe as punishment.

The best people to ask about 'european development' are the youth in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland.

But that would entail their Eurocrat overlords like Mr Barroso giving a single hoot about their lives.

Another 'jobs summit' please, Mr Barroso, and quick!

That's true, and don't forget the youth in Italy. But on the other hand there are youth in Germany, Finland, Netherlands, Austria and others that are in a much better shape. Maybe the problems in the peripherical countries are not only the eurocrats but mostly their own governments.

Of course the eurocrats like these ones don't help at all.

But instead to flee the EU project i prefer to try to fix it. Call me utopic if you like.

That would be the Brits who saved Europe from Napolean and then saved Europe from Hitler.

I appreciate that ultimately it was Russia and the US that overwhelmed Hitler, but had Britain not held out there would have been no platform for an invasion by the US and Hitler would have won a one-front war with Russia.

European dictators always consider Britain to be "not european", which is why Barroso, et al are of that opinion.  tato is obviously in thrall to the European dictators of the EU.

In the '60s it was the french president De Gaulle who vetoed the admission of the UK in the EU and I don't remember anyone calling him a dictator. London is out of most of the european treaties: Euro, Schengen, fiscal compact, european social charter. They are just uninterested in a better european integration. I love UK and I admire the UK people. I will spend my holiday in England next summer. I just say that they don't feel european at all. Ask anyone in continental Europe and most of the people will tell that brits are not european, at least in the EU meaning of the word. If they want to leave the EU is their business. But why they would like that other countries should follow their path? Just leave and leave us in peace.

1. Nigel has been banging on about the sovereign debt thing and other issues for some time now.Everything he predicted has occurred. He literally has become the little kid who points and says "The Emperor has no clothes".He objects to the waste of UK taxpayers money as contributions to the Brussels hookers and blow economy.

2.Were the EU area booming along at 20% per annum growth, then the UK would have nothing to fear from a tidal wave of legal immigrants. This growth has not happened and figures show that much of the boom era (2000-2005) was due to construction in the Spanish residential housing sector, funded by cheap American currency being borrowed and re-injected into this area (a very large bubble).

As with Ireland, the mantra seems to have been "If you build it they will come".

3.I find it tiresome that the hon. Mr.Farage has been tarred with the extremist, racist, scumbag, etc. brush. His local townhall orations have well attended and he articulates the fears and insecurities of his constituents. Is he not doing his job by representing them? I keep reading the word "fringe" but certainly now it should be mainstream? I think alarm bells are ringing all over Fleet Street,if it still exists.

4.I remember a few years ago they were having a pass the hat (not the first!) party for some southern Europe basketcase and then Finland raises her hand and says "Sure, but I want collateral for the Bonds".Then everyone says"I want collateral too!!" And this was before the Cyprus bail-in happened. This EU wide Bank insolvency issue is not going to disappear by itself. The EU area Banks bought alot of crap securities during the Bull market era and now the EU taxpayer has to pay up.Nigel points this fact out repeatedly.Does this make him a fringe extremist?

5.Nigel very courageously went to Scotland even though he expected a hostile reception. He was barracaded in a Pub in Edinburgh by an unruly mob which it took the police some time to disperse. This was NOT a spontaneous event but was planned and organized.Although I respect the rights of free speech of the common man,it seems clear the objective was to keep him from meeting any supporters or ordinary Scots who wished to hear a non-standard viewpoint.Shame on the Scots who participated in this "rent a mob" thuggery.

No doubt they would be screaming holy murder if the situation were reversed.

6.Almost every time I watch his videos in the Europarliament I am reminded of  the old story about the cocktail party going on with a 2000 pound elephant in the middle of the room, everyone walking past as if it is invisible.

Nigel is representing common sense. That is why he is so successful.

He does not need to be great, just has to be better than the status quo. Consider!
Arrayed against Farage is the ideological coalition responsible for destroying the middle class:

1) Standard "We are the World", Kumbaya, Left Wing politics that would gladly starve your children through economic neglect if it would also aid the anonymous "huddled masses" of the world

---AND---

2) Mainstream Economic Conservatives and Libertarian/Free Marketeers who applaud any policy that leads to an endless supply of 3rd world unskilled labor and 2nd World Skilled Labor.

These two ideological factions are in league across the entire Western World and they have authored an endless recipe for harm to working people. The most astonishing thing is that the oligarchs have (finally!) lost some measure of control over the message, at least in a few regions.

Like clockwork, expect the mainstream, oligarch-controlled media to diligently assassinate reform figures like Nigel Farage.
