President Obama Defends His Foreign Policy In West Point Speech - Live Webcast

Tyler Durden's picture

The West Point Military Academy Commencement address short hand: "Enjoy it now... and don't retire or get injured..." As NYTimes notes, President Obama plans to use a speech at the West Point military academy on Wednesday to lay out a foreign policy vision for his final two-and-a-half years in office, defending his approach against a wave of criticism that he has been too passive on the world stage.

As NYTimes concludes,

The West Point speech comes just days before Mr. Obama heads overseas again, this time to Europe where his international leadership will be tested as he tries to pressure Russia to stop disrupting a new pro-European government in neighboring Ukraine. He will leave Washington on Monday night headed for Warsaw, where he will reassure Poles and other Eastern Europeans that the United States will stand by its NATO allies against any potential Russian aggression.

From there, he will head to Brussels to meet with other leaders of the major industrial powers known as the Group of 7 for its first annual summit meeting since suspending Russia, which was to have host the gathering. Mr. Obama has strained to coordinate the American response to Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine with European allies who have been more reluctant to take action that could jeopardize their economic ties with Russia.

Mr. Obama will end his trip in Normandy, France, to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, which turned the tide in World War II. That may be the most awkward stop because among the leaders planning to attend is President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

You know what lie really bugs me? That D-Day turned the tide in WWII. By June 1944, the Germans had already lost, because the Russians were grinding them up on the Eastern Front. If the D-Day invasion fleet had sunk to the bottom of the Channel, WWII still would have ended in 1945.

How brutal.  Consider the grads at West Point and the irony is that their ultimate reward is to have to listen to this guy demonstrate that all that leadership and accountability training they've learned over the last 4 years is all bullshit in that they can be "all that they can be" and still have to answer to a political hack with no substance.

Bay of Pigs, if you dont know what Big words mean dont use them.  From Wikipedia

The term "neoconservative" refers to those who made the ideological journey from the anti-Stalinist left to the camp of American conservatism.[2] Neoconservatives frequently advocate the "assertive" promotion of democracy and promotion of "American national interest" in international affairs including by means of military force.[3][4] The movement had its intellectual roots in the Jewish[5] monthly review magazine Commentary.[6][7] C. Bradley Thompson, a professor at Clemson University, claims that most influential neoconservatives refer explicitly to the theoretical ideas in the philosophy of Leo Strauss (1899–1973).[8]

Obozo is neither conservative, nor promotes american national interest.  Rather he is to be kind an Communist that promotes a one world agenda by destroying America.

A true Neo-con would have bombed Syria consequenes be damned, would have bombed Iran, would have never pissed off the Saudi's and Israel, would never let Benghazi happen, or the Islamic Spring occur.  Not saying that any of those positions would have been correct, but Obozo is hardly a Neo-con.

The one thing that I thought would take and turn some neoconservatives around would be how Obama has unilaterally launched American troops into more foreign conflicts than Bush did and has openly been arming the groups that American troops are supposedly fighting against.  I thought that might make the average neoconservative, not the ones in power, see the folly of intervening into every other countries' affairs.  Instead, I hear average citizen neocons as saying Obama's stance on foeign policy as not being tough enough.

Same as it ever was...

Speaking of Jordan, why not turn that country into an independent Palestine?  Most of the people there are palestinian and ruled by a minority monarchy US-puppet regime.  The Hashemite monarchy is a joke.  One of their "kings" married some American blonde a few decades ago.  I guess she was "queen".  The Gaza Strip is just a desert shithole with no resources.  Of course, that would mean a loss of a military staging location for the US.

That's right, let them pitch their tents right next to Bravo Company, go on patrol as designated water-toters or something, ride along with supply convoys through IED-land, etc. No substitutions, deferals, or exceptions congressman....get yer ass on that cargo plane/ship.

...defending his approach against a wave of criticism that he has been too passive on the world stage.

Who says Obama has been too passive on the world stage? Who says that he needs to kill more innocent villagers? Who says that he needs to push NATO to occupy and take over more sovereign nations?

Answer: The New York Times which now hopes that the tough talk at West Point will materialize to make the world safe for its new world order.

When Bill Clinton was elected president, Hillary bragged that she would be so powerful that you actually got two for one for president. Apparently, Michelle is feeling the heat as she tries to give the Obamas double whammy impact.

While Barack makes war in Ukraine, Michelle makes war at home with her latest suggestions for thought control.

Here’s Michelle, the government, speaking to graduating high school students from five area high schools at the Topeka, Kan. Senior Recognition Day on May 16 on the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, urging high schoolers to monitor their families' politically incorrect thoughts:

“Maybe that starts simply in your own family, when grandpa tells that off-colored joke at Thanksgiving, or you’ve got an aunt talks about ‘those people’. Well, you can politely inform them that they’re talking about your friends,” Obama continued. “Because this issue is so sensitive, is so complicated, so bound up with a painful history. And we need your generation to help us break through. We need all of you to ask the hard questions and have the honest conversations, because that is the only way we will heal the wounds of the past and move forward to a better future.”

Cheryl Chumley, a reporter for The Washington Times and the author of “Police State USA,” believes the first lady’s remarks as an overreach, and a way to attack people for politically incorrect thinking. “Michelle Obama’s push for kids around the nation to monitor their family members for perceived racist comments is just another way the government seeks to inject itself into an area it doesn’t really belong — the American home,” she told The Daily Caller.

"Operation Overlord." Been true since Day One.

Putin's response for his plans for the defense of Moscow should be instructive as well.

All I have to say is Von Monstein was never a Nazi (in fact the Nazi's hated him.). Talk about being promoted on merit.

Even Winston Churchill needed him...and of course he was ready for that when the time came as well. "Straight from prison to creating the Germany you see today."

There really sad and disturbing part of this whole Obamadisaster is that these cadets are going to serve under an illegal Commander and Chief, a "man" with no allegiance or attachment to America. Obama is not a natural born Citizen, eligible to be POTUS (ONE BORN FREE OF ALL FOREIGN ALLEGIANCE. I.E BORN IN THE US OF 2 US CITIZEN PARENTS--OR A SINGLE US CITIZEN MOTHER), since he was born British, of a British subject father.

Young men are dying under the "leadership" of an illegal commander, and dying in many more numbers than under Bush, yet Obama is given a pass by the useful idiot media. Add that to the number of innocent women and children killed in drone strikes, and one realizes that these cadets are listening to a mass murderer, and that the "media" are accessories.

at least obama didn't advocate pre-emptive warfare as did bush during the 2002 usma graduation:

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2002/06/bush-j04.html

In a speech delivered June 1 to graduating cadets at the US Military Academy at West Point, George W. Bush asserted his administration’s intention to carry out preemptive military attacks wherever it perceives a challenge to America’s global interests.

“Our security will require transforming the military you will lead. A military that must be ready to strike at a moment’s notice in any dark corner of the world,” Bush told the newly minted army officers. “And our security will require all Americans to be forward looking and resolute, to be ready for preemptive action when necessary to defend our liberty and to defend our lives.”

He went on to state that Washington is currently investigating 60 countries that could be attacked without warning because of the alleged existence of terrorist cells.

The policy spelled out before the army’s corps of cadets goes even further than that enunciated by Bush in his State of the Union speech last January, when he vowed unrelenting and permanent war against a so-called “axis of evil.”

In its most immediate implications, the speech pointed to the administration’s determination to proceed with plans for an invasion of Iraq. The remarks at West Point constituted the first major address by the US president since his return from a European tour in which he faced unconcealed skepticism about US aims. The speech had the character of a slap in the face to European governments that questioned Washington’s militarist agenda, and, in particular, the preparations for a military intervention to remove the regime in Baghdad.

The implications of the speech, however, go much further, signaling a historic shift in US foreign policy that is pregnant with catastrophic implications for the people of the United States and the entire world.

For weeks, administration officials have sounded a drumbeat of warnings that further terrorist attacks are inevitable, threatening a massive loss of life on US soil. Even if one accepts these lurid warnings as legitimate and discounts the obvious connection between their issuance and the administration’s desire to divert attention from mounting revelations of government lies concerning September 11, it does not follow that the only possible response is preemptive military action. Rather, the path being taken by the administration is the culmination of a protracted turn by the US ruling elite toward reliance on military force as the solution to all challenges it confronts on the world arena.

...

on the other hand, here's obama's (sensible) bottom line:

But to say that we have an interest in pursuing peace and freedom beyond our borders is not to say that every problem has a military solution. Since World War II, some of our most costly mistakes came not from our restraint but from our willingness to rush into military adventures without thinking through the consequences, without building international support and legitimacy for our action, without leveling with the American people about the sacrifices required. Tough talk often draws headlines, but war rarely conforms to slogans. As General Eisenhower, someone with hard-earned knowledge on this subject, said at this ceremony in 1947, “War is mankind’s most tragic and stupid folly; to seek or advise its deliberate provocation is a black crime against all men.”

Like Eisenhower, this generation of men and women in uniform know all too well the wages of war, and that includes those of you here at West Point. Four of the service members who stood in the audience when I announced the surge of our forces in Afghanistan gave their lives in that effort. A lot more were wounded.

I believe America’s security demanded those deployments. But I am haunted by those deaths. I am haunted by those wounds. And I would betray my duty to you, and to the country we love, if I sent you into harm’s way simply because I saw a problem somewhere in the world that needed to be fixed, or because I was worried about critics who think military intervention is the only way for America to avoid looking weak.

Here’s my bottom line: America must always lead on the world stage. If we don’t, no one else will. The military that you have joined is, and always will be, the backbone of that leadership. But U.S. military action cannot be the only, or even primary, component of our leadership in every instance. Just because we have the best hammer does not mean that every problem is a nail.

i haven't yet seen any holistic strategy that addresses root cause(s).  in order to address terrorism, you need to ask at least 5 whys starting with:

  • why do people engage in terrorism and violence?
