Snowden Says "Stranded In Russia By State Department"; Kerry Blasts "Man-Up And Come Back To US"

Tyler Durden's picture

This evening's interview between Edward Snowden and NBC's Brian Williams is already stirring up controversy. In one excerpt, Snowden blames the State Department for "stranding him" in Russia, saying he "never intended" to wind up there. John Kerry has been quick to react to this "For a supposedly smart guy, that’s a pretty dumb answer, frankly," Kerry said. "If Mr. Snowden wants to come back to the United States today, we'll have him on a flight today." In an interview with Chuck Todd on MSNBC, Kerry called Snowden a "coward" and a "traitor," adding that "he should man up and come back to the United States," the secretary of state said. There is a live special at 11ET (below) after the televised interview.

As NBC reports,Snowden was "stranded" in Russia by the State Department...

"I personally am surprised that I ended up here," Snowden said in the interview, an excerpt of which aired on TODAY on Wednesday morning.

Snowden's comments about his new home came in an extended, wide-ranging interview with Williams, his first with a U.S. television network, airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.

"The reality is I never intended to end up in Russia," he said. "I had a flight booked to Cuba onwards to Latin America and I was stopped because the United States government decided to revoke my passport and trap me in Moscow Airport.

"So when people ask why are you in Russia, I say, 'Please ask the State Department."

To which John Kerry responded...

"For a supposedly smart guy, that’s a pretty dumb answer, frankly," Kerry said. "If Mr. Snowden wants to come back to the United States today, we'll have him on a flight today.

"We'd be delighted for him to come back. He should come back. That's what a patriot would do. A patriot would not run away and look for refuge in Russia or Cuba or some other country. A patriot would stand up in the United States and make his case to the American people," Kerry added.

"He can come home but he’s a fugitive from justice which is why he is not being permitted to fly around the world," he said.

Asked whether he had changed his mind about the nature of Snowden's actions, Kerry said Snowden "stole" information and did "great damage" to the United States.

"The fact is if he cares so much about America and he believes in America, he should trust in the American system of justice," Kerry said.

"But to be hiding in Russia, an authoritarian country, and to have just admitted he was really just trying to get to Cuba — what does that tell you?" he added. "I think he's confused. I think it's very sad."

In an interview with Chuck Todd on MSNBC, Kerry called Snowden a "coward" and a "traitor."

...

"He should man up and come back to the United States," the secretary of state said.

Snowden also fought back against critics who dismissed him as a low-level hacker — saying he was “trained as a spy” and offered technical expertise to high levels of government.

At 11pm ET Brian Williams will be hosting a live special analysis of what was said...

Secretary of State John Kerry, talking about someone, anyone let alone Mr Snowden, being "cowardly" a "traitor","pretty dumb" and about"manning up", and most importantly about being a patriot.  Now that's a real laugh.

It's sad that a Senator who became that way by coming out against the Vietnam War the way he did appears to not be able to find it in his heart where this kid is coming from.

If I were Secretary of State I would be meeting him at the airport to
give him a hug. He'd still be going to prison! But this kid stood
up for what he believed in.

That is honorable indeed.

oh boy i see where this is going now. 9/11 happened the way the narrative said  it happened. Snowden admits that. They got that out of the way early.

So now it's a matter of whether we are willing to give up our freedom in exchange for security, and obviously we all are. Poor Snowden's heart is in the right place, but he does not get to decide for all of us that we should not trade our freedom in exchange for the security that .gov provides. His decision put all us sheeple at risk. Poor Eddie is fighting a losing battle now.

If Snowden's last name were Joyce, we'd be poking through Finnigans Wake searching for clues.  And we'd find them too, because Joyce put them there.  Likewise, Heller left clues that at some future point would correlate with one or another important event.  Good writer's understand this, and do it on purpose.

The irony here is that the Snowden name is just a coincidence.

The clue that Heller wants you to Catch is the number 22.

Investigate that sucker and see where it leads...

but be careful Taylor...

If Snowden is legit or not is besides the point. Unlike Kerry, he is not a government official, he does not wield the power from the people. Kerry uses that power to arm heart-eating Wahhabis and neo-nazi thugs, with your dime.

So Snowden is, at worst, an actor and, at best, a hero. Kerry is at best a petty war criminal and, at worst, an enemy of mankind.

Remember who your enemy is.

The Edward Snowden revelations create a great litmus test for all Americans.  It is simple.  Those who brand Snowden a traitor are traitors themselves.

I am sure that Snowden "knows" 9-11 and the Boston Marathon bombing amongst others were  false flags. But, he is smart enough not to verbalize that.  As long as he does not make a comment considered racist he should be home scott free.

John Kerry,  you like some many of your ilk are an "AINO" (American in name only).

These are some nasty times. Americans fleeing to Russia? There was also that French comedian who fled to Russia to escape ridiculously high taxes. This is looking an awful lot like the 1930s. Remember when guys like Oppenheimer, Einstein, and wealthy Jews fled Germany? I think a lot of people see the writing on the wall and know what's next. It's only a matter of time before we start confiscating wealth and imposing capital controls, just like we did the 1930s. There was a time when it was illegal for Americans to own gold; it all had to be handed over to the government. This time will probably be pensions  and bank accounts. The number of Americans cancelling their American citizenship is growing at an alarming rate. Doug Casey and Jim Rogers have already left the country. Guys like Simon Black and Jeff Berwick are encouraging others to do the same. Rather than admit fault, the government doubles down and calls these people cowards. That might be true, but running is smarter than fighting if it's a fight you can't possibly win.

Snowden's first stop, the one he made even before the administration realized he was the source of the leaks, was that bastion of Internet freedom, the PRC.  Did he have a smug explanation for that itinerary too?

His asylum in Russia is temporary of course.  He's going to be on the first plane back once Putin gets sick of him.  I doubt an ex-KGB agent has any respect for a squealer.

I certainly wouldn't say he's a "traitor" and agree that the US govt is going way overboard trying to hunt him down (we let that child rapist director live large in France for God's sake), but you can't deny that he broke his word about keeping things secret, lied about his intentions in order to get a clearance, and has since assisted in the propaganda of an unfriendly world power.  "Patriot" sure as hell doesn't apply either.

Surveying every communication, collecting and compiling it for use at a later day.  Political arena in a democracy is useless under this program.  Corporate edge is neutered comfuckingpletely.  How do you expect us to talk with one another?  A statement, purchase, communication, event could be misconstrued to paint a person as someone he is not simply by a connection on a cell phone call to a person who called a person who knows a person who once visited Pakistan.  Turning someone into a criminal will be a cinch.  Differences of political or religious views is a whole other arena that will be soiled when you realize the "other" team/side/ones are deciding your fate.

Tulpa, I will take your comments seriously. Consider this, if you worked for the world's top spook agency (KGB was pretty close) and knew the methods and disinformation techniques what would you do, walk to the nearest local police station to report NSA/CIA spying? What do you suppose would happen? Do you think we would have ever heard from him at all? I doubt it, myself.

To me...and I am not one of the innumerable deep conspiracy theorists, going to an "enemy" or hostile nation is the rational choice. You have to go somewhere that is hostile or at least unsympathetic to the USA and it's spy agencies. Go to Britain and they turn you over in a half heartbeat for waterboarding debriefings back in the USA. Moscow will not. Beijing would weigh things out because the USA is a huge trading partner so they could break either way.

While I have no love for the places he was headed it did make sense to me.

That would be my logical counterpoint...with no insults.

I agree with you.

But that doesn't mean Snowden is a real whistleblower.

I think, just my personal opinion, is that he is part of  a revenge operation perpetrated by some group against some other group of the shadow government.

Or some sort of mesaaging operation, where one group tells the other to keep calm and carry on or else... or is sending the message that things need to be put on high gear real fast.

He fails to pass the biggest test of them all: Who the fuck did 9/11?

IF NSA is so "know-it-all", and he was such a high level access guy, surely he must have had some access to the 9/11 stuf.

But see, not one yota comes out of his releases about 9/11.

The fact that him brought to light the NSA shit is just that he gave some credence to the conspiracy theorists that saidf that NSA is monitoring all Internet traffic.

It was a known fact that the main job of the NSA is to monitor communications worldwide. Known fact it was.

Do you think that info is new to the Russians or Chinese? You think they are stupid and know nothing about what NSA does?

He simply was made to be a hero  initially, by --The Guardian/Washington Post-- brigade and then other MSM outlets. This should really be a sign.

I'm not saying that he is a wiling actor. a deceiver in this. I'm saying he was prepared, maybe without him even knowing what part he will play.

Say the CIA wants to do this kind of shit. Hires a slim, nice looking guy, intelligent --- which the masses will like and believe----, who is articulate.

But naive a bit. Makes him part of some sort of "European team doing some high level stuff in Switzerland" just so that he feels his job is the real deal. Just to make him think he is part of some high level intelligence operations.

And then slowly, they make sure it is possible to him to get access to some NSA shit. And since they picked the right guy, decent guy, with morals, but naive with no clue to the real operations, he maybe is encouraged to "whistleblow" or directed in such a way that he's only option is to "whistleblow".

I think he is used and a pawn in a much bigger game.

And I repeat: 9/11. What does he have to say about it?

Thu, 05/29/2014 - 18:35 | 4807707 Tulpa
Tulpa's picture

He's not a whistleblower as nothing he reported was illegal under existing laws.  He's at best an informant.

To put it mildly, the KGB operated in a different environment than the NSA does.  I know ZH-chic demands that the US be equivalenced to Nazi Germany and the USSR but I'll risk being unfashionable.  Disappearing a US citizen would be a pretty huge leap in tyranny from anything we've seen.  Didn't happen to Jose Padilla or Bradley (or whatever the new name is) Manning, so I seriously doubt it would happen to Snowden.  Nothing's happened to Greenwald, the guy who actually published the material.

And don't give me the crap about the 4th Amendment.  Full-blown warrantless wiretapping was considered perfectly constitutional for the first 90 years after the telephone was invented, and the stuff Snowden revealed doesn't come close to that.

I actually knew a military spook long ago. The military and CIA cross over. This was still in the old USSR days and what you say rings true from his stories.

Spies and agency guys could disappear but even back then they preferred to trade people versus execute.

Most of what I have seen about Snowdens revelations are not real security burners in the sense of nuclear launch codes. They are more like info on "Do you know what your government is up to?"

Left to its own I believe government gets worse and does more of this stuff so I credit Snowden with a bit of a reset.

I think this is where you run a foul of people posting here. No one in their right mind would agree in anything other than a technicality.

So as I've said before on this thread, if America was founded partly on dissent, what could be more 'American' than what he has done?

Holding that information may be why these boys are still alive.  When they do release it, there will be a day of reckoning.  Military members will rise up and extinguish the perps from the map.  If anything happens to any of them, te documents will be released, Greenwald stated.  But, like with Karen Hudes, I reserve final judgment until when the fat lady sings, as one commentator stated about the situation here on the ground.

"Come on back and trust in the American Justice System Snowden.  Be a "real Patriot" and put yourself at the mercy of a government, whom you've witnessed first hand, is corrupt to its core."

To be honest, Snowden has exercised an amazing amount of restraint constantly limiting his comments to his status and the issue of mass surveillance.  If I were in his shoes my retorts about our government would be considerably less tactful. As in, "Hey Kerry, suck my cock and balls you gold-digging, horse-faced, mouthbreathing Lurch motherfucker."

NSA? AussieKiwi what is Australia doing? The 5 Eyes?

Why are Aussie not pissed off at their own government? What about the Brits? Swedes? NZ?.........

Every nation is spying on its people and we're all up in arms about the USA? The Snowden discourse is blinding us to the fact that each government is doing this shit, not just the USA, its unacceptable by every nation yet we're only looking at the USA. Plus each of our governments is colluding/sponsoring Google etc to further the fascist state spying on each of us.

How many war crimes has Australia participated in through the 5 Eyes and other programs???  Are Aussie's loving the increasing use of drones (eg G20 meeting) and license plate recognition tech, etc, etc on ourselves; we're a fascist surveillence state and we're doing the same to our neighbours!

"Julia Gillard has become only the second Australian prime minister to visit the top secret Defence Signals Directorate facility in Canberra, as she formally announced the establishment of a new cyber security centre."

Shamelessly going ot and quoting myself as I want opinion of people here that are either French or have been living in France for a long while. I post this in "dead" news (as far as comment are concerned):

IT would not surprise me, a French, if France was in fact the European with the greatest amount of debt, above the PIGS.

There are 2 things that are obvious in France:

How beautiful the country is as a whole, take a car go in different parts of France and you will understand what I mean.

The incredible amount of governemental spending, I don't have exhausitve knowledge of what available else in Europe but it is insane: the state (~) helps with loans, rents, runs appartment offices, pay for gruesome amount of useless associations, number of employees in local governement has exploded, there shit ton of people taking of the street gardening even in poor cities. People with kids (so around everyone) benefit from massive cuts when it comes to paying taxe income (one may wonder how it is fund...) and the list goes on forever.

Shortly put when the time is "right", for now the country is all too necessary in many regards (~primary US ally recent military operations, critical to EU advancements), but yes when the time comes I would be surprised if the real accounting of the country is any better than say Japan., it is a question French should ask themselves how could it be better? I mean tourism is profitable, Japanese entreprises have massive difficulties but look at France and explain me how it could be any better than Japan?

I wish my wife (not French) were not that insistant in wanting to stay as I would get the fuck out of here no matter my sincere opinion that France should be one of best place to live on this earth... potential is there to say the least.

---------------------------------

What are other French thinking about it, I suspect there are quite a few here reading.

Many people would say that Governments spying on their citizens appears to have become a global phenomena, but is it? It sounds like many of the countries in Europe find the revelations of the America government collecting and sifting through "metadata" as somewhat distasteful.

It should be pointed out that Europe also shares many of the same problems with terrorist attacks that we in America face. It is generally thought that the countries engaged is such covert and Orwellian actions are generally paranoid states with totalitarian rulers or the non-democrat systems that exist in countries such as China, North Korea, Iran, and a host of other places. 'Man Up'???

Snowden is "his own man"!!! which none of these government/corporate 'straw men' could understand, nor could they attempt to even fake thoughts, comments, deductions, nor actions of Snowden who is a 'true' Patriot!

Idioms of 'man up' (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/man+up)

be one's own man:

to be free from restrictions, control, or dictatorial influence; be independent.

U.S.A. Government = Cronny Capital Corporate U.S.A. Government = 'Straw Man'

straw man (noun):

a mass of straw formed to resemble a man, as for a doll or scarecrow.

  • a person whose importance or function is only nominal, as to cover another's activities; front.
  • a fabricated or conveniently weak or innocuous person, object, matter, etc., used as a seeming adversary or argument: The issue she railed about was no more than a straw man.

Origin: 1585–95

SNOWDEN IS A PATRIOT!!!

pa·tri·ot (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/patriot?s=t)
[pey-tree-uht, -ot or, esp. British, pa-tree-uht]
noun

  • a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion.
  • a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.

Maybe this is all an issue of idiots in positions of power within the threre arms of the U.S.A. government!

As my latin friend says, 'this country is cracked!'

Just because credit, interest on money, has worked quite well for you 'murikans in the last 100 years or so, doesn't mean it's a good thing in the historical sense.

So to get back to limited hangout Ed SnowDEN.

Just because he says things which are probably true about what the NSA is doing, doesn't mean his intentions are good towards you, or he's just a naive useful idiot, but weirdly enough way too slick, sexy and fit and articulate for decent folks. Decent folk have been soo ass raped the last 100 years, that they don't really have time to learn proper English, look fit, and work for the CIA/NSA.

Decent folk are farmers and workers, earning very little money and trying to survive, and not being highshool dropouts hired on 200k+ USD salary a year by the fucking CIA.

The devil is a evil fuck. He knows how to deceive people.

What if Snowden were to run for president by some "independent party" as a "stick it to the man" operation.

I bet the gays, the blacks, the republicans, the democrats, the gold hoarders, the tea partiers, the Ron Paulistas, the lesbians, the ugly whales of women that nobody wnats to fuck, would vote for him.

But what do we know about him? About the man? What if he's a deceiver just like Obamao?

The Illuminati or the Reptilians or the Queen of England or Merkel or the Martians or the choosenitzes or who ever the fuck runs this Planet, they are not stupid.

They know people are starting to see through the duality of Demo/Rep theatrics.

And so they proceed to build up "believable opposition". "new alternatives that are young fresh and speak perfectly good English".

But, the US is supposed to be a Constitutional Republic, not a criminal organization. When I took my secret clearances and I have had many, my pledge was to keep secret vital national programs, not to hide crimes. I didn't join the Mafia, when I pledged secrecy or so I thought.

I think Ed Snowden knows what the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution is. Holding on to the last slender thread of a society governed by laws and not by caprice, secrecy cannot be a veil for hiding crimes.

It's pretty funny that a metrosexual like Kerry would use the term "man up".  HAHAHAHAHA!

The 'conservative' host of the radio talk show I listen to on the way into work has been bashing Snowden pretty much nonstop, also calling him a coward for fleeing the US.  I honestly don't know what choice Snowden had.  Yeah, he could have stayed here and took his chances with the legal system but considering the info he leaked I don't know how any reasonable person could think the NSA wouldn't have made him vanish off the face of the earth.  The guy was a nobody.  If he had been locked up or off'd, there would have been very few people that even would have known about it and the media sure as hell wouldn't have covered it.  I think by doing what he did, he basically ensured that the story was big, sensational and got the cover it deserved.

"The fact is if he cares so much about America and he believes in America, he should trust in the American system of justice," Kerry said."..

I'm assuming he means the system of justice that has allowed thousands of bankers to swindle and defraud the world without any investigation and not a single indictment.
