Over A Thousand Soldiers Killed As Ukraine Fighting Escalates, Russian Media Reports

Tyler Durden's picture

While one should take locally sourced news on the volatile situation in Ukraine, reported by media that is ideologically close to the source, with a grain of salt, Russian press agency RIA has generally had a good track record in reporting news regarding the Ukraine civil war. In which case if the following report of what may have happened overnight during the latest escalation of fighting in the eastern Ukraine city of Slavyansk, and which certainly doesn't paint the Ukraine army in a favorable light, is even partially correct one can see why suddenly western media news coverage of the civil war in Ukraine has become somewhat sparse.

According to RIA, quoting Slaviansk people's mayor Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, about 1,200 Ukrainian army soldiers have been killed during a special operation in Slaviansk, and eight helicopters and 15 armored vehicles were destroyed. Supposedly this includes the 1 helicopter whose crash was reported previously.

"According to our information, the Ukrainian army has the following losses and damages: 1,200-1,300 people were killed, eight helicopters, 15 armored transport vehicles, and three [artillery] weapons destroyed. They are suffering huge losses. I’m speaking only about Slaviansk," Ponomaryov said in an interview with the Latvian radio station Baltkom.

Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov confirmed Thursday the downing of a military helicopter had killed 14 Ukrainian servicemen, including a general. Soon after that, the Ukrainian National Guard clarified that 12, not 14 people were killed in the Mi-8 helicopter crash near Slaviansk.

The people’s mayor also noted that the self-defense forces of Slaviansk had lost about 200 people.

"About 200 were killed and 300 wounded," Ponomaryov specified.

Ponomaryov also mentioned that several civilians died and eight people were wounded yesterday.

Meanwhile, as the media curtain descends, the fighting on the ground is escalating:

The troops involved in the military operation in southeastern Ukraine began firing mortars at Slaviansk Tuesday at around noon local time. Several private homes were razed, including houses in the villages of Andreevka and Sergeevka in the city’s suburbs. Several dozen people were killed.

Alexei Pushkov, the head of the Russian Duma’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, wrote Wednesday that the Kiev interim authorities are lying when they claim the residential areas in eastern Ukraine are not being targeted by troops.

The active phase of the military operation has now been suspended, Ukraine's UNIAN news agency reported Thursday.

Perhaps the best indicator of how accurate this report is will come from the Kremlin itself: if indeed the fighting is as extensive as reported, Russia's previous suggestion for humanitarian intervention will morph from a polite offer to a stern warning about what the Russians will do, if not outright border-crossing action.

What joyous news!

Let's hope Zbigs Polack "brothers" were among the dead in abundance along with Erik Prince' and John Kerry's "DOS" folk...

The only thing that would top the cake is if news came in that Hunter Biden was in the neighborhood and gotsent home to Daddy in a rubber bag along with his contingent from "Royal Dutch Shell"...

Ukraine and Ukrainians will not forgive Russia for what it has done.

Strange. roberto.  I think that an acknowledgement that the USA, Russia, China are all owned and run by and for Oligarchs might be the more accurate position.  And by extension, foreign policy will be for the oligarchs.

The US-backed assault on eastern Ukraine makes one wonder what the American government would have in mind for its own citizens. The answer comes in today’s revelation on Zero Hedge from a Washington Times article on measures approved in 2010 of Directive 3025.15 attempting to make legal the government’s authority to attack American citizens on American soil.

Would this then fit the plan to fold America’s government into a world government authority?

Detroit received a lot more than $5 bills over the last 25 years.  Too bad they wasted it.  Handing out foreign aid in $$$ is as much about helping as it is about encouraging the dollar's use as a global reserve currency (IMO).  Unfortunately, in the case of Ukraine much of it probably ended up in the pockets of the former pres and his son.

Always fun to read what Tokyo Rose has to say, but yeah, ZH's reporting on the Ukraine crisis has been little more than lightly camouflaged propaganda. Sad because questions could be answered by finding out who is paying Chechnyans and other foreign mercenaries to fight. The toll of foreign mercenary deaths earlier in the week (if it's to be believed) suggests Russia is either complicit in sponsoring terrorism or at the very least conveniently looking the other way.

"...who is paying Chechnyans and other foreign mercenaries to fight" depends on which Chechyans. It appears the U.S. is supporting any group in any country that is against the Russian Federation. For instance:

British And American Covert Operations
OIL AND THE BATTLE FOR CHECHNYA :

A Caucasian Republic On An Oil Transit Corridor
Between The Caspian And Black Seas

QUOTE: (2012)

"The shootings and bombings in Ingushetia and Dagestan this week rekindled a long-standing, brutal campaign of violence and terrorism in Russia’s Caucasus region – one that has seen more than its share of terror stretching back to the Chechen 'rebellion' of the 1990s. .... The complex network of terrorist organizations that operate under the banners of 'separatism' and 'independence' for the Caucasus region, has been at the center of the destabilization of Russia for the last two decades. Within hours of the deadly attacks, the Kavkaz Center – an organization known to be the propaganda mouthpiece of terrorist leader Doku Umarov – released an article characterizing the attacks as heroic acts and referring to the dead as 'Russian puppets.' Though this would seem to be not in keeping with the Center’s stated mission 'to provide reporting of events…and assistance of journalistic work in the Caucasus,' this is, in fact, very much par for the course for an organization that is funded by the US State Department and Finland’s Foreign Ministry. Kavkaz Center has a long track record of supporting and legitimizing terrorist actions throughout the region, rationalizing atrocities committed in the name of 'resistance.' In fact, Kavkaz engages in perpetual upside-down logic, referring to Russians as 'terrorists' and terrorists as 'heroes.' ....  it is essential to note that Emarat Kavkaz (Umarov’s terrorist organization translated as 'Caucasus Emirate') has been listed by the United Nations as an organization associated with Al-Qaida. Kavkaz Center has been described by Umarov himself as 'the official information organ of the Emarat Kavkaz.' This, of course, supports the claims made repeatedly by Moscow of the connection between Chechen and other extremists in the region and Al Qaida, a claim which, until recently, Kavkaz Center continued to deny. Despite the fact that organs such as Kavkaz Center operate in the service of terrorists who advocate the destruction of Russia, their activity alone is not altogether significant if seen in a vacuum. Rather, it is the association of these types of individuals and organizations with the US State Department and US intelligence that makes them particularly insidious. One such entity that bears scrutiny is the American Committee for Peace in the Caucasus (ACPC), previously known as the American Committee for Peace in Chechnya. As reported by Right Web at the Institute for Policy Studies, 'The ACPC was founded in 1999 by Freedom House, a neoconservative organization that has worked closely with the U.S. government, receiving funds from the National Endowment for Democracy and other U.S. democratization initiatives.' This intimate relationship between the ACPC and the US State Department indicates not merely a confluence of interests, but rather a direct relationship .... The ACPC has taken the lead in championing the cause of separatism and terrorism directed toward Russia, both tacitly and overtly. After having championed the cause of former Chechen Foreign Minister Ilyas Akhmadov in his quest for asylum in the United States – subsequently granted along with a generous taxpayer-funded stipend – ACPC member Zbigniew Brzezinski went so far as to write the foreward to Akhmadov’s book "The Chechen Struggle."

You're reaching and forgetting to ask who benefits most.  Whoever controls Chechnya will still want to sell any oil or gas it has.  Whether the profits go to Grozny or Moscow makes little difference to the West.  However, the methods chosen by Russia to control Chechnya are an embarassement to the West.  That does not mean the West wants to see the destruction of Russia.

You are either a blind fool, or a shill.  Gee, which could it be.

Even former Secretary of State Kissinger is aghast that his own neo-con legacy has led to a near total disdain in the DoS, CIA, and Whitehouse for the crucial balance of east-west national interests as regards Russia, as any sane analyitic human would hope from the only two nuclear powers capable of destroying the planet.  Russia is no longer the Soviet Union, has been materially halved since its collapse, and has made seriously intentioned strides to integrate itself into the dollar-run world economy over the last 20 years, despite Gorbachev's being betrayed by America's non-expansion-of-Nato promise.  But no, this is not enough to ask.  We must now extend our democratic exceptionalism to the Ukraine, the cradle of Russian civilization.  What extraordinary arrogance!

And why?  Because of America's and the West's betrayal of their own citizenry at the behest of an international banking cabal that is on the verge of blowing up the debt ravaged world economy now has no choice but to seek the most notorious distraction possible, one that even exceeds an interminable "war on (sic) terrorism", and in its mad necessity to control global energy production, must now demonize Russia. And if they could pull it off, yes, even the destruction of Russia.  And if, in so doing, that should lead to a deliberate or accidental nuclear exchange, so be it.

This is the legacy you wish upon your children and mine?

Every sane and moral person in the world should pray day and night that Russia (and Putin) find the self-control to (without total capitulation) walk the knife-edge of doing the honorable measure of not ignobly betraying 10 million ethnic Russians in the Eastern Ukraine, and successfuly parrying with the West to arrive at an outcome in Ukraine not militarily detrimental to its own future.

The danger to human survival on the planet is not emanating from Moscow, it is unequivocably sourced only from Washington, D.C. and its minions, and it leaves us all with the most unsettling question: and that is whether our illustrious leaders are truly willing to gamble your life, my life, and perhaps all life in the solar system, on the premise that a first-strike nuclear assault is a winnable.

So which is it "IF"?   Are you a blind fool?  Or an arrogant nihilist?

Free propaganda? Have you read Reuters?

The media, particularly Reuters, is editorializing in its “news” articles so extensively now in its coverage of Ukraine West that one has to cherrypick through its Kiev-support opinion just to uncover the facts it propagandizes. Never mind that newsmen in the good old days reported and investigated the purported facts to arrive at the truth... and God help the liar.

Reuters’ mouthpiece, Alexei Anishchuk, tells us today that Sergei Glazyev, an economic adviser to President Vladimir Putin with responsibility for ties with Ukraine, told reporters in the Kazakh capital, Astana, that the United States “are unfurling a war in Ukraine, after organizing a coup and putting their own people in charge, to use Ukraine as a detonator against Russia and Europe."

And, according to Glazyev just before Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan signed a treaty creating a new trading bloc : "There is growing chaos in Ukraine, and the chaos is increasingly acquiring the traits of a global catastrophe.”

Reuter’s Anishchuk then tries to set the record straight, not mentioning US mercanaires on the ground in Ukraine,, the Kiev coup of an elected government, the referendum vote in Crimea to secede, the Kiev bombings and killings in eastern Ukraine of Ukrainians… Says Anishchuk:

Glazyer's “comments were characteristically confrontational for an adviser who has regularly staked out more radical positions than the Russian government or the Kremlin, which at times has distanced itself from his remarks.

“The crisis in Ukraine, from which Russia has annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, has caused the worst tensions in relations with the West since the Cold War ended.”

And get this, from a so-called news organization: “The United States has denied instigating events which forced the removal of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, described by Moscow as a coup d'etat, and says it wants a peaceful resolution to the crisis. Washington has denied reports about U.S. mercenaries operating in Ukraine and says there is evidence of Russian support for the rebels there.” No sources, of course, or investigative fact.

And there you have it, MSM North-Coreeean news agency reporting in from Ukraine.

"Meanwhile, as the media curtain descends, the fighting on the ground is escalating."  This quote is the truth. As Ukraine's forces from the west have closed in to crush the resistance to the coup government in the east, western media coverage has pretty much gone into a black hole. The may pass along the odd press release from Kiev's acting coup government, but little else is said.

We all know why! If the operation to crush the east and impose Kiev's coup upon those cities was successful, then the media would be blaring the good news of the spread of freedom and democracy to the east. "PBS "Frontline" had a hald hour show on the Ukraine two days ago. I watched in order to get what Washington thought we should learn about the situation. It was transparent and badly done little piece of propaganda work, though it did admit the fascist nature of much of the coup supporters. They presented only one east Ukrainian supporter of federation. He was masked, and said he was paid by Moscow, and so were the east's fighters. He said Russian troops and agents cross the border to fight and to command the resistance. eyc. etc. Pretty much followed the NATO line, and remained secret, we never were allowed to know who he was. So that makes you wonder.

Anyways, nobody knows, these numbers sound very high. Maybe 1/4 of that might be true. But we can't know, information comes only from the interested parties. So we just wait to see, but if you recall, Kiev has been taking these same two towns for almost two months. Two small towns, they have't been taken yet? That is a telling fact!

Fox, who seems to be one of the few news outlets with actual reporters in the area reports that not only are there Chechen fighters there but they have taken weapons from the local Donetsk fighters. This would seem to imply that the Chechens are now in charge of the local defense.

These Chechens to which Fox refers are freedom fighters, pro-separatist.

According to Fox: “Chechnya's regional leader said Wednesday that he hasn't sent any troops to fight alongside pro-Russia insurgents, but he says some Chechens may have gone there on their own.”

Also: “Fighters who looked like residents of the Caucasus have been seen among pro-Russia rebels, where they have seized government buildings and fought with Ukrainian forces, according to the Associated Press.” Fox then adds this bit of when-did-you-stop-beating-your-wife editorializing:  “Ukraine and the West have accused Moscow of fomenting the unrest, but it has denied the claim.”

It must be remembered that there is a secret war going on, with the U.S. using mercenaries, al-Quaeda, anybody that will push the Empire’s interests. The point is, there are public wars where the U.S. military is involved. But these public wars are only a small part of the war that the U.S. is waging throughout the world - using CIA operatives, mercenaries, government turncoats, anybody within those countries that will help.

And the Neocons have been front and center in making this War of Empire possible.

Its actually quite difficult to kill soldiers in war.   Maim and batter them, hell yes, but tougher to kill; give soldiers enough of a battering and they simply withdraw the worse for wear and tear.

On the other hand, equipment, which is absolutely necessary, can and does break down with alacrity.    A much better of combat intensity is to count the helicopters shot down, isn't the MI-8 supposed to be a virtual armored troop carrier, and will be impossible to replace (without NATO).

I guess that General thought everything was under control.  It obviously wasn't.  That is an expensive lesson to learn.

That being said, time will tell whether there is any truth to this story.  I suspect this is a last gasp by the Russian Ukrainian mafia terrorists.  Tomorrow, few Russian Ukrainian defenders will believe what they are being told by their superiors.  The smart ones will simply packup and move along.

I believe it is basically over.  The General thought so and didn't take enough precautions.  Lesson learned.

+1000, Volkodav.

And this:

European Politics Will Be Different From Today On

The European Parliament election made Eurosceptics big winners. The never relenting obsession to make Ukraine break up with Russia has started to undermine the fragile basis of European security allowing nationalists and isolationists make significant gains. The Petro Poroshenko’s victory in Ukraine with ultra right and nationalists gaining more seats in parliament changes the correlation of forces inside the European Union and affects the EU-Kiev-Moscow relationship. Ukraine became consolidated around an oligarch while the European parliament has internal divisions exacerbated. «European politics will be different from today on», said Doru Frantescu, policy director and co-founder of VoteWatch Europe, an independent Brussels-based organization that tracked opinion polls in the run-up to the elections...

As prior military, I'm having a problem believing that 1200 dead count. This would be almost 2 infantry battalions lost...  a shit load of troops regardless how you count 'em. Any media source on the ground would notice 2 Battalions gone and report it regardless of political loyalty. Man, you just can't hide 2 freaking battalions...  it don't smell right.

most is not military..is so called "National Guard" which is quick formed mostly extreme gang types and ignorant peasants for some pay.

as far as numbers remember there were two thousand minimum rode bus to odessa for attacks. since they trained for two weeks, given arms and set upon the Donbass citizens.

Word is there was more than five thousand of these amateurs sent by Kyiv.

these found out they can't walk in and murder unarmed like in odessa and maripol but strolled into ambushes and encircled is the story from on the ground reports.

The General dead in shootdown was commander of "Nat Guard" not regular army unit

There isn't much ground army left and there is surrender/defect regularly, especially last days again. What is left is finding ways to miss out on action...

Internet information “researched” by Google is researched by a rigged search engine. Yours is a question that demands an answer and a solution in an allegedly free country.

Google is suppressing the news and editorializing by prioritizing first the information that supports its opinions and leftist agenda; items prioritized in its search are often diametrically opposed to the intent of the information request (maybe for several pages) if that request challenges Google’s mindset.

For instance, the search American Founders Christian will pull up first such nonsense as “the Christian nation myth.”

This bias has a massive negative impact on truth -  both historically, culturally and educationally, particularly on young, uninformed minds seeking information, say, regarding America’s founding and founders, or evolution vs. creation, or Christianity, or capitalism vs.socialism, or the Pilgrims, American Indians or Snowden, Ukraine, European culture… whatever.

Follow the money to find out what happened in America; the demise of her freedom and the right of men to regulate their own affairs to assure the greatest good to the greatest number, i.e., a voice in their government, can be traced directly to the steps of the Federal Reserve.

The idea of America getting involved or jumping into a war in Ukraine would have been hard to imagine a few years ago. As I write this the potential for this to escalate is real. Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is becoming a reality.

As insane as it appears this could become the final outcome. The location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. It is silly to think Putin and Russia will back down. This means poking the bear is not a smart move. More on this subject in the article below.
