The Death And Decay Of Detroit, As Seen From The Streets

Tyler Durden's picture

With the stock market hitting record highs day after day, it is easy to move on and forget that one of American's once premier cities, Detroit, has been bankrupt for nearly a year. But out of mind doesn't mean out of sight, especially now that Google has launched its street view Time Machine, which provides for 7 years worth of street images, showing the time shift of the tumultuous period period starting in 2007. One blogger who decided to take this time lapse data and apply it to the city of Detroit is GooBing Detroit who, as the following time-lapse photos demonstrate, has captured Detoit's unprecedented slow-motion collapse into death and decay in what is the closest we have to "real time."

Perhaps what is most stunning about the following series of photos is not the ultimate fate of the bankrupt city, but how quickly a once vibrant metropolis has succumbed to blight and sheer desperation.

Hopefully not coming to a street near you.

All photos from the Goobingdetroit tumblr depict various areas and streets in Detroit, then and now.

Northwest, near Grand River

West Golden Gate, Detroit

Southwest Detroit

East side, near Alter Road

Patton Street, NW Detroit

Feel like you can kind of see how this scene unfolded:

In the top photo, the tree is blocking the view of that yellow house in the middle — that house isn’t in great shape, but it’s ok. The house to the left has neatly trimmed hedges and a chair on the porch. The house on the right has been gutted by fire.

I imagine that middle house - since it’s been demo’d by 2012 - caught on fire and caused the further damage to the house at the right. Whoever had been living in the nicely maintained house on the left, moved out, and that house was gutted.

In the last photo — with the nicely maintained house farthest to the right — you see another nice house on the left, with a boarded up, but fairly stable, house in the middle. By 2012, both nice houses are gutted, as is the boarded up one in the middle.

Springwells Village

Near City Airport. Wonder why they didn’t take down the one next door while they were at it…

From top to bottom: 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013. Hickory Street between Manning and Pinewood, northeast Detroit.

Of the 12,093 properties in this Detroit neighborhood, 1,037 are owned by the City of Detroit, mostly due to tax foreclosure. Another ~4,500 are either subject to tax foreclosure right now, or will be in the next year or two.

Eastwood between Queen and MacCray, Northwest Detroit. Just east of Osborn, in “Burbank”… if anyone actually calls it that.  Of the 34 properties on this block, 24 have been tax foreclosed, 13 are at risk of foreclosure, and precisely 1 property is in good tax standing.

Corner of Thaddeus and S. Leigh Street, Southwest Detroit. That’s a lotta washing machines…

Hazelridge between Celestine and MacCray, Northeast Detroit

This block is incredible. Still pretty dense with housing, but only one of them is occupied. If you go a block to the west, the housing stock changes to brick and the neighborhood looks pretty stable.

The New York Times visited this block during the Motor City Mapping survey:

"Blight, as Karl Baker, one Detroit resident, has seen, tends to spread. Along his block of Hazelridge Street on the East Side, he is the only remaining tenant. “Everyone went bye-bye,” Mr. Baker said the other day as he walked up the center of the silent street to get to his house since no sidewalks had been shoveled.

Most of the houses nearby are standing but abandoned, and visitors have clearly passed through — empty liquor bottles lie along debris-covered floors near broken windows and doors, every memory of a metal appliance or gutter seems to be gone from some of the homes, and two old couches that were dumped along a lawn are now blanketed by a thick layer of snow.

The last neighbor left six months ago, he said, and the single streetlight overhead has not worked for months. “I love the quiet, but if something went wrong, the city isn’t going to come,” Mr. Baker said. “They don’t do anything.”

Hoyt between Liberal and Pinewood, Northeast Detroit

Arndt between Elmwood and Ellery, East Side, Detroit

Lady waving to the street view car in the first image, c. 2009. Nearby the Heidelberg Project, and in the style, though not sure if a Tyree or not.

You have to give credit to Eric Holder for undermining rule of law so comprehensively that political opposition in the land of the free is perilous to one's assets, friends, pursuits, freedoms etc. just like in the run up to the American revolution, but with wiretapping and comprehensive pervasive systems of control at the ready, shore to shore and offshore too.

the "city is resisting" because the Agenda is to move "other nationals" in as a part of "globalising" the nationstates.

nothing to see here, move along. . .

in places like BC or Seattle, West Coast cities, "chinese" money continues to shop for houses, real estate is booming. . .

place like Detroit, are merely being "backdoored" to a different type of developer-shopper, Special Economic Zones for "future factory cities" while the "coasts" stay relatively less polluted by "industry".

look at any third-world "nation" for a hint at what's going down. . .same gig going forward, just more variety in the appearances.

No foreign power has ever done as much damage to the US as we have done to ourselves.

We would be outraged and calling for war if another nation had done this to us but the corporate executives and financers - with the connivance of our own politicians - are the ones that have destroyed this nation's economic base.

This is what happens when you have the endless pursuit of the cheapest possible labor (withthe resulting 'savings' and 'productivity improvements' going to a very few at the top). 'Free Trade' - supported by BOTH political parties on behalf of their corporate overlords - has destroyed the jobs base in this nation.  The Oligarchs have won - the Republic is dead but the Empire is crumbling fast.

This is what happened when the focus is on 'capital' alone - when more money is to be made simply from money instead of earned through labor.

Some saw it coming - Perot for one (he was right on this for all his other 'issues').  Watch below for a prescient look:

Substitute in "unions" for "we" and you would be getting somewhere. Eschew union made products. Demand right to work laws. Demand public service unions be banned, or else end public service sector job security. Subcontract their asses. They vote 90% socialist, and grow their numbers. They are sucking away your present now, not just your future.

The fed and all central banks are controlled by the faux-Hebrew/Babylonian/Khazarian/progressive/fascist Tribes of Benjamin and Judah.

The same fractional reserve Babylonian money creation fraud is in the process of confiscationg the wealth of all nations who have fallen prey to the maleficent system.

It is unquestioningly a foreign power, with the corruption of our politicians and courts with their limitless money supply, that has brought this moral and economic destruction upon us.

While the Joos will deny it vociferously, the whole plan is laid out in the "Protocols of The Learned Elders of Zion".  If you think that what has happened in the past 100 years is just coincidence, you are either brain-dead or a willing participant in the great destruction......it is planned and intentional.

Only the Joos and their appointed, morally devolved, dupes are allowed, even temporarily into positions where they can control the creation or dissemination of the world money supply.

As the American empire is brought to its knees, China will be brought forth, for a very short time, as the political instrument through which they will effect the final takeover of the world monetary system.  The seeds of economic chaos in China were cast in mathematical inevitability with the establishment of the PBOC and the Babylonian system of national economic disintergration inherent in the fractional reserve fraud.

With an excess population of two hundred million young men, as a consequence of their "one-child policy" of attempted population control, Beijing knows that many millions of their excess male population must be assigned as fodder for foreign adventurism before any significant downturn in employment or business opportunities brings chaos and rebellion and implosion of central control by the politburo.

For years now, due to the shortage of Chinese women, roving bands of young chinese males have been invading surrounding nations and kidnapping young women to be taken back to China as wives.

We must remember, China is a agglomeration of many dissimilar Cantons, With many, many, more different spoken languages from village to village, with the residents of one village many times unable to even speak the language of another village just a few miles away.  It is error to perceive China as a monolithic nation, with one spoken language and a culturally or theistically homogenous population.

China will spend its short-term regional economic and military advantage on ever-more far-flung delusional, aggressive, oppressive, hegemonic thrusts into asia, the middle east, Africa, and oceania.  With this aggressive external international posture, the Chinese politburo will bring about the collapse and implosion of its internal control and withdraw into internal conflict.

It is all part of the plan extolled in the "Protocols"......and it is all to be effected through the implementation of the Babylonian fractional reserve money creation fraud which it has installed in the nations, which is designed to confiscate all wealth without the populations even understanding what has happened to them.

China's rise will be short-lived and will end in calamity for the ruling crimnals in the politburo.  China will ultimately devolve into the many Cantonistic regions from which it was assembled.

The U.S. May well also devolve into regional political entities to overcome the maleficent legal and political edictatory excretions being imposed by the morally and ethically corrupted oppressive Establishment seated.there.

Your overall post is on the button apart from this: If you think that what has happened in the past 100 years is just coincidence, you are either brain-dead or a willing participant in the great destruction.

I consider myself well-read and am educated to post-doctoral level but, despite avidly reading history and politics I never realized the truth until a few years ago.  That's because my information all came from 'approved outlets'.  Once you begin to see the cracks in the Official Narrative you begin an unorthodox line of investigation and then the whole house of lies come crashing down.

My point is that most people are too engaged in other things to make the required effort (and that's what the destroyers are banking on). But it doesn't mean they're brain-dead or a willing participant in the great destruction. Our job is to let the light in on the truth.

This was done by those who embraced Globalization. Most favored national status for China, NAFTA, ALL free trade agreements, Unrestricted Open Borders Illegal "immigration." Ross Perot was right in the early 1990's, but the majority listened to slick Willie instead.

"all the advantages a new comer has"... Such as?

Sure they don't have the pensions and high-priced 60 year olds shuffling around. They may get a break on property taxes, but they had to buy land, erect factories, build infrastructure, set up supply chains, forge relationships here. I would think that all of the big 3 factories and land would have been paid off years ago.

Sun, 06/08/2014 - 09:51 | 4834027 Everybodys All ...
Everybodys All American's picture

I worked at Honda of America as a contractor so I have a little bit of insight as to how and why they were successful in competing in the US car market while GM and other legacy US auto mfgrs were failing.

No labor unions.

No big city demographic issues (never ever set up a plant or supply chain near a big city).

Multi-year deals (10 years and more) with no state and local taxes on factory plant operations.

No legacy health care or pensions was obvious but not the major contributor to their success.

These are huge advantages that can't be dismissed and is why Detroit is in the condition it's in today. Americans bought foreign designed and made automobiles because they were made at a price point that Detroit could not compete with. That's why Detroit is closing plants and opening them overseas.

I drank that koolaid and bought a honda once.

After 3 yrs that "quality" had a rusted out gas tank(the sheet metal stampings were so thin they had soldered patches on all the corners), totally rusted A member (caused the front wheels to go in different directions) and burned oil like Saddam.

All during the time I lived on Patton St. in the D.

I could take similar pictures in almost any neighborhood over that same period, where a house is abandoned and boarded up for even a few months.  However since 2012 a lot of my California neighborhoods have seen such an (unjustified) upsurge, most houses were quickly bought, modestly cleaned up, and flipped to new owners.

The real damage in Detroit doesn't even show in pictures.  The real damage in California, neither.  Northern California still has Silicon Valley, but Southern California is right on the edge of losing its last major industry, entertainment.  We both share an influx of Chinese and other foreign money.  There are regions of some activity still, some high-value medical technology firms in particular it seems, but these will follow the trend soon enough and then, friends, I just don't know.  We used to have aerospace, but that's mostly gone now.  There's a port that can't really be moved, and some big old refineries still chugging along somehow.  There's agriculture, but even if the drought ends that won't economically support a population like Los Angeles.  Thirty years ago there was an active computer industry down here, even twenty years ago there was still a lot of small-scale manufacturing and even apparel tucked away in odd corners, and I guess there still is some, here and there, but only old stuff or small stuff, new stuff goes elsewhere and if something small grows, it moves out.  And we have Governator Jerry Brown, senile and fully corrupted shadow of the goofball he used to be, running for reimmaculation on a platform that everything is fixed and wonderful.  Against a shaved-head Hindu Goldman Sachs alumnus - who I will vote for!  Ain't we got fun.

There never really was a Los Angeles.  That was just a name tacked on to huge piece of Real Estate with a lot of widely divergent 'islands' of cultural, linguistic, income levels, social caste, and myriad other factors that operated to make it not one city but many cities. It would  be like calling the 51 states, The United States.

Being no more united than bill and hilary. sharing little to nothing, and if you ain't in the Movie industry you don't really exist.

But voting for a G-S alumnus for anything but the death penalty is a serious mistake.

your post points out the obvious,

a name tacked on to huge piece of Real Estate with a lot of widely divergent 'islands' of cultural, linguistic, income levels, social caste, and myriad other factor

that should be applied to ALL pockets of "humanity" that exist today - there "never really was" any One Thing that ties everyone together, but "death & taxes" - ie, the nationstate model, which is raise 'em up, pair 'em off, work, breed, shop, die -

rinse, repeat, profit.

and yes, "voting" is an unnecessary indulgence of fantasy.

Honestly, how much of this is simply due to urban black culture?  Sure, foreclosures happen but apparently as soon as somebody moves out, the "neighborhood" guts it, burns it down, and destroys the housing stock.   This isn't long-term decay but criminal destruction.   Some of those blocks had beautiful small, almost historic type, homes.   A real community keeps those protected or at least doesn't gut and burn them.

Sorry, this isn't all on the banksters and politicians.

You're right. It's only about 99%. This happens when good people (BTW, the 1%?) just give up on the continuously losing battle against bankers, bureaucrats, inefficient police, defense lawyers and liberal politicians and just decide to go live elsewhere in search of what used to be called the American dream. The only question I have is since Detroit is close to Canada how many went across the border and emigrated permanently?

Just in case you didn't see my earlier response:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_V8_engine

428[edit]

In 1967 the 421 was bored to 4.120. this gave a displacement of 426.61 CID or a 427. The 428 had the same 4.000" stroke as the 421, and was produced from 1967 to 1969. this engine produced 360 hp and 376 hp in 1967, 375 hp and 390 hp in 1968 and 360 hp, 370 hp and 390 hp in 1969. The crankshaft in the 428 also had a "N" cast on them as opposed to the 421's Armasteel. In 1969, Pontiac also used a revised crankshaft out of a Pearlitic malleable-iron, although it still used the "N" casting letter. This new material had stronger alloys in the iron. All 428 engines were factory install in large cars only. However, there were a few dealers that would install a 428 in a customers GTO or Firebird for higher power levels.

It was replaced by the 455 for the 1970 model year.

The pattern seems to be one or two houses get foreclosed to sit empty which makes it impossible for anyone to sell. Then there might be a fire but most of the decay shown is the result of the houses being stripped of windows, doors, siding and who knows from on the inside. They ought to just raze entire neighborhoods rather then let them sit there and rot. It would be cheaper for the taxpayer, fend off crime and help salvage value to healthier neighborhoods currently being sucked down that shithole vortex.
