The Death And Decay Of Detroit, As Seen From The Streets

Tyler Durden's picture

With the stock market hitting record highs day after day, it is easy to move on and forget that one of American's once premier cities, Detroit, has been bankrupt for nearly a year. But out of mind doesn't mean out of sight, especially now that Google has launched its street view Time Machine, which provides for 7 years worth of street images, showing the time shift of the tumultuous period period starting in 2007. One blogger who decided to take this time lapse data and apply it to the city of Detroit is GooBing Detroit who, as the following time-lapse photos demonstrate, has captured Detoit's unprecedented slow-motion collapse into death and decay in what is the closest we have to "real time."

Perhaps what is most stunning about the following series of photos is not the ultimate fate of the bankrupt city, but how quickly a once vibrant metropolis has succumbed to blight and sheer desperation.

Hopefully not coming to a street near you.

All photos from the Goobingdetroit tumblr depict various areas and streets in Detroit, then and now.

Chene between Palmer and Ferry. 15 of the 20 properties on this block have been, or are subject to, tax foreclosure. Looked like a nice bakery.

Exeter between 7 Mile and Penrose, Northern Detroit.

Brightmoor neighborhood.

Around 7 Mile, West Side

Northwest, near Grand River

West Golden Gate, Detroit

Southwest Detroit

East side, near Alter Road

Patton Street, NW Detroit

Feel like you can kind of see how this scene unfolded:

In the top photo, the tree is blocking the view of that yellow house in the middle — that house isn’t in great shape, but it’s ok. The house to the left has neatly trimmed hedges and a chair on the porch. The house on the right has been gutted by fire.

I imagine that middle house - since it’s been demo’d by 2012 - caught on fire and caused the further damage to the house at the right. Whoever had been living in the nicely maintained house on the left, moved out, and that house was gutted.

In the last photo — with the nicely maintained house farthest to the right — you see another nice house on the left, with a boarded up, but fairly stable, house in the middle. By 2012, both nice houses are gutted, as is the boarded up one in the middle.

Springwells Village

Near City Airport. Wonder why they didn’t take down the one next door while they were at it…

From top to bottom: 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013. Hickory Street between Manning and Pinewood, northeast Detroit.

Of the 12,093 properties in this Detroit neighborhood, 1,037 are owned by the City of Detroit, mostly due to tax foreclosure. Another ~4,500 are either subject to tax foreclosure right now, or will be in the next year or two.

Eastwood between Queen and MacCray, Northwest Detroit. Just east of Osborn, in “Burbank”… if anyone actually calls it that.  Of the 34 properties on this block, 24 have been tax foreclosed, 13 are at risk of foreclosure, and precisely 1 property is in good tax standing.

Corner of Thaddeus and S. Leigh Street, Southwest Detroit. That’s a lotta washing machines…

Hazelridge between Celestine and MacCray, Northeast Detroit

This block is incredible. Still pretty dense with housing, but only one of them is occupied. If you go a block to the west, the housing stock changes to brick and the neighborhood looks pretty stable.

The New York Times visited this block during the Motor City Mapping survey:

"Blight, as Karl Baker, one Detroit resident, has seen, tends to spread. Along his block of Hazelridge Street on the East Side, he is the only remaining tenant. “Everyone went bye-bye,” Mr. Baker said the other day as he walked up the center of the silent street to get to his house since no sidewalks had been shoveled.

Most of the houses nearby are standing but abandoned, and visitors have clearly passed through — empty liquor bottles lie along debris-covered floors near broken windows and doors, every memory of a metal appliance or gutter seems to be gone from some of the homes, and two old couches that were dumped along a lawn are now blanketed by a thick layer of snow.

The last neighbor left six months ago, he said, and the single streetlight overhead has not worked for months. “I love the quiet, but if something went wrong, the city isn’t going to come,” Mr. Baker said. “They don’t do anything.”

Hoyt between Liberal and Pinewood, Northeast Detroit

Arndt between Elmwood and Ellery, East Side, Detroit

Lady waving to the street view car in the first image, c. 2009. Nearby the Heidelberg Project, and in the style, though not sure if a Tyree or not.

Riddle me this. If the problem is simply progressive policies then why did Detroit fall to ruin while San Francisco hasn't?

I'll answer that.

Most progressive cities are located in naturally beautiful areas.

Try the same shit is Nebraska, and see what happens.

Millionaire Chinese and others are swarmed into Frisco. But go an hour outside of Frisco, to your progressive paradises like Stockton, and see what liberalism combined with not-so-nice setting gets you. It's the same everywhere in Cali. Nice coastal communities, but go a few miles inland, and see what liberals have done with their insane policies. The fed propping the housing bubble helps places like Frisco and LA the most. When you live in an area where land is not anywhere near constrained, the only liberal bastions you are going to see are quaint college towns that are recession proof do to the fed propping the college bubble too.

BTW, the unions are hurting Frisco, so that is false. Chicago is almost completely feral (except for the gold coast, and even that's getting bad). New York is full of Fed cash, so you can't use them as an example. I've lived everywhere, and seen it all.

Nope. If you want to what liberals can really do when they are motivated, go to Detroit. See what happens when you pay people to breed indiscriminantly, replace the family unit with Uncle Sam, and personal responsibility is considered an insulting, hateful phrase.

The blood is on their hands. They created it. And there is no solving it, except for nonsensical promises of hope, change and other bullshit.

SF is one of the most segregated cities in the ole decaying union.  Family demographics are about the lowest of any US city.  Further, it does have at least a harbour where imports and exports drive a not so small amount of economic activity.  Without silicon valley, napa valley, and the harbor, SF would look about as poor as its neighbor Oakland.  Oh, that's right....that's where the modern "trail of tears" leds, Oakland.  Only the most economically viable are permitted to live in SF.

Why haven't the super Nubians in Detroit(or anywhere they are a majority) built something majestic, along the lines of the pyramids and the sphinx, as they like to claim they were responsible for in Egypt, maybe something with grand palaces and new housing that exceeds all other civilzations? Or even just kept a clean lawn and a simply maintained house and sidewalk for that matter. Hell, that isn't beyond a 5th grade mental ability.

I know, they are too busy attacking women and the elderly, cuz you knows, muh dik, muh dik, muh dik.

We evolve as populations, not individuals. The evolutionary signals for the African-American are no longer useful for him. His environment is now the world of parasiting off productive society and trivial passtimes. Thousands of years of his evolution are being undone. His best specimens are lost in a sea of mediocrity and the sickly who were once pruned from the tree of life.

We are all going backward except for the single race who outlaw the discussion of race. Jared Diamond is famous for saying "race is a social construct." But in his nations private publications he welcomed genetic testing which can now tell who is Jewish. There are dozens of organisations which encourge Jewish people to marry other Jewish people. In Israel it isn't even legal for a Jewish person to marry a non-Jewish person.

By 2025, signs like this will be common:

You are entering a safe neighborhood
Inner-city residents will be shot on sight
THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING

I'd love to have a chat with a typical history-impaired young person in 2100:

"Did you know that Africans used to live in North America?"
"No way! Did they live in zoos, like chimps?"
"No, they lived in houses and roamed freely."
"Then how come America doesn't look like Africa?"
"Where Africans lived, it did."

Either that, or whites adopt a nomadic lifestyle, rolling up their tents and moving on when the old neighborhood gets too "vibrant". Which is sort of what we do already -- buy a cornfield, cover it with flimsy houses, and abandon it twenty years later when diversity creeps in.

Much of Detroit was made of brick, built to last. We won't make that mistake again.

rural murder rates are lower across the board. white trash crime rates in the same socioeconomic situation as black trash are comparable.

from an asianamerican perspective white trash and black trash are all the same. we know that because we faced much of the same prejudice black people have. the black community reaction, as orchastrated by their leaders, was the role of victim, the role of the perpetual loser. the asian response was/is "fuck you. i'll kick your ass." today, white students avoid asian dominated high schools because they are afraid of the competition and curiously claim asians don't compete fairly because they (we) work too hard. we work too hard! lol! what a loser excuse! white trash has become to mean more than just socioeconomic status. it is a pervasive culture of proud ignorance. dumb fucks.

as gm goes so goes the nation. indeed, that adage has proven to be true. detroit is coming to a city near you.

the perspective on these photos has to include the consideration that these photos can be taken in almost every small rural town in the usa, especially the towns that are not near the interstate highway system. these decrepit towns were the canary in the coalmine. the adirondack park(the largest environmental park in the usa, bigger than yellowstone) in new york is a great example of the phenomenon. the area was once a thriving economic zone supported by mining, farming and logging. the restrictions on the use of the park have effectively killed the mining and logging industries. farming does not employ enough people to support a community alone. the economy is suppose to survive on tourism but the 6 weeks of the summer season is the only time there are enough people to support the locals. who, in their right mind, would start a business knowing one bad summer means they are out of business? so people like me(i grew up there)leave as soon as possible because a future is much more important than preserving the north country way of life, broke and poor but very resourceful and friendly. soon there will not be enough people to support the summer tourist trade and the environmentalists willl get their wish for a vast people free wilderness area in the middle of the most populated areas in the country.

REVREX has a point.

Detroit looks the way it does, after the Riots, White Flight, Loss of Tax Base, and Capital Flight.

But Detroit Eerily seems to be what is happening to the Whole USA under the Reign of TBTF/TBTJ Bankers who send their capital to gamble in London or to Invest Overseas Eschewing US People & healthy US Capital Formation.

Does anybody REALLY think the Fed, The Treasury, President, or Congress give a rat's ass about where the money goes, if the money is stagnant, if the capital flies to gambling purposes, if US Corporations are Looted by executive perks and compensation packages, or if US Jobs are SYSTEMATICALLY cut in the USA.

I know we need jobs, consumption, & stimulus, so "okay" we'll provide more money to the big bank dealers!! Brilliant. Original. Next, Negative Interest Rates!!

Tepid article. The photos are devastating though.

Underneath the Article's Sterile approach are strong emotions of real people that have come to know how to salvage pipes, copper, appliances, wiring, freon, and people that have been ignored for 30 years. Insurance money finally becomes the source of Envy.

But at one time many of those people and well today even their kids are very talented. Detroit changed, but probably still has smart, talented, people that could make cars or operate machine shops. Good opportunity for the Chinese.

Sorry Tongue in Cheek humor. But heard the Chinese were really buying up Detroit (Rumor only).

But I don't have to worry about how congress, the president, or DOJ feels about Chinese buying our weapons, technology, ports, farm land, or corporations. USA is very pro-Sell it all, Loot it all.

What happened to the Military Patriots from the 1960s that would have done anything to save the USA from Chinese ownership??? Seems like we had a generation that was "Silent" as described by a book called "The Forth Turning."

Reading a book from 2005, wow we were still the world biggest exporter. Not cars of course. We exported a lot of agricultural produce, waste & scrap, and transistors back then.

The official line is the Detroit is one-off, due to some special circumstance like being dependent on making cars.   The implication is "it can't happen here".

But Detroit is merely cutting edge.  As more cities go bankrupt they will follow this path.  The city no longer protects property rights so gangs and vandals have free reign.

We need The Collapse in order to cleanse the socialist mindset from Americans.  Bring it on.

Isn't the first step Discovery?

I hear it is not just cities, counties, towns, but also Universities, and even Harvard. The bought into zombie hedge funds with operating trust funds.

I mean debt is north of $60 Trillion, federal government, local governments, businesses of all kinds, households. Student Loans, Real Estate, Leveraged Businesses.

Foreign Assets owned in the USA = $26 Trillion, more than US owns in other countries.

tom waits, " house where nobody lives "
.
There's a house on my block
That's abandoned and cold
Folks moved out of it a
Long time ago
And they took all their things
And they never came back
Looks like it's haunted
With the windows all cracked
And everyone calls it
The house, the house where
Nobody lives

Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?

Well the paint was all cracked
It was peeled off of the wood
Papers were stacked on the porch
Where I stood
And the weeds had grown up
Just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney
And an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever
Come back to the
House were nobody lives

Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?
.
So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold
Don't trade it for silver
oh Don't trade it for gold
I have all of life's treasures
And they are fine and they are good
They remind me that houses
Are just made of wood
What makes a house grand
oh Ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house
It's a palace for sure
Without love...
It ain't nothin but a house
A house where nobody lives
Without love it ain't nothin
But a house, a house where
Nobody lives.

"Machine Gun"

"Happy new year first of all. I hope we'll have
A million or two million more of them... if we
Can get over this summer, he he he. right I'd
Like to dedicate this one to the draggin' scene
That's goin' on all the soldiers that are fightin'
In chicago, milwaukee and new york... oh yeas, and
All the soldiers fightin' in vietnam. like to do
A thing called 'machine gun'."

Machine gun
Tearing my body all apart

Machine gun
Tearing my body all apart

Evil man make me kill ya
Evil man make you kill me
Evil man make me kill you
Even though we're only families apart

Well I pick up my axe and fight lik a bomber
(you know what I mean)
Hey and your bullets keep knocking me down

Hey I pick up my axe and fight like a bomber now
Yeah but you still blast me down to the ground

The same way you shoot me down baby
You'll be going just the same
Three times the pain
And your own self to blame
Hey machine gun

Oooooooooo

I ain't afraid of your mess no more, babe
I ain't afraid no more
After a while your your cheap talk don't evern cause me pain
So let your bullets fly like rain

'cause I know all the time you're wrong baby
And you'll be goin' just the same
Yeah machine gun
Tearing my family apart
Yeah yeah alright
Tearing my family apart

Don't you shoot him down
He's about to leave here
Don't you shoot him down
He's got to stay here
He ain't going nowhere
He's been shot down to the ground
Oh where he can't survive no no

Yeah that's what we don't wanna hear any more, alright
No bullets
At least here, huh huh
No guns, no bombs
Huh huh
No nothin', just let's all live and live
You know instead of killin'

I spent 47 years working in the Auto industry in the Detroit area and throughout the mid west before I retired. I have witnessed firsthand the gutted manufacturing in the rust belt and the blight it brought upon millions of people.

If you look closely you will see that this urban blight is also happening all over the rust belt in Mid-America. As I travelled in my working years I took these same types of photos in Chicago, Cleveland and most other rust belt cities. Photos like the ones above have been circulating for more than 50 years in the Midwest but most of the rest of America never noticed.

This really started big time in the 1970s and slammed Detroit hard in the 80’s when the unions broke the back of one auto plant after another for putting in automation. To survive the Detroit auto plants one by one moved south or to Mexico where unions did not dominate or closed forever. It’s well documented that in the 1980 to 1989 manufacturing bust in the mid west more than 40,000 ex-auto workers lost their jobs in the Detroit area and most moved away. The joke for many years thereafter, in Detroit, was Houston then had more Detroiter’s than Texans.

In total I heard a report in published by the Detroit Free Press during the auto crisis of 2008 to 2010 that the big three had eliminated close to 375,000 direct and indirect auto jobs in the Detroit area area since the 1970s and the trend was still going strong.

But that is not all. The real shame in this were the state and city officials (democrats) and unions in that with each wave of destruction promised a new era of rebuilding, restoration and new jobs…that never came. Many, many auto workers tried to maintain Detroit properties throughout this debacle…but in the end they too packed up, moved, not even bothering to try to sell homes they had kept in good order because of the ocean of abandoned homes in Detroit had driven down prices next to nothing…

Thanks for sharing. I grew up in NE Ohio in the 1970's...the rust belt. A neighbor worked at an auto plant in Lordstown and drove a Honda to work. That was probably a crazy thing to do.

I went off to college and made a life outside of that area. Many of my old HS friends stayed to eek out a living.

Everything is so political in US. So much false information is spread around on the left & the right, as memes.

Your story rings true having lived near Detroit for years. NE Ohio & Chicago also have decapitalized auto shops/machine shops. I didn't know about the Detroiters Moving to Huston. Huston is sort of an Oil Boom town.

US Worker Rights & OSHA passed in 1970 make US Work force expensive. So the Auto Executives saw all this coming at least from 1970. But maybe as you say, people play politics and really don't solve city problems or take them head on like previous generations.

Neil Howe and William Strauss seem to say we had a "Silent Generation". The boomers are rebels. The Post WWII Generation before the boomers followed rules, worked together, and was silent about government. Today we must have a generation that really shakes up the USA. It cycles in this theory. 4 Generations then repeat.

Evolution doesn't always move forward to improve a species ability to alter their environment. Devolution is just as active working to make species adaptability extinct as well. External changes may overcome their ability to adapt to new conditions and they slowly die off.

The human ability to devise strategies to forestall these events doesn't mean they will use the correct ones and the the inevitable occurs. Their environment simply can't sustain the population because the resources that drew them there no longer exist and the choice is to migrate or perish.

Perhaps there some cycles there are beyond our ability to change quick enough and the hive dies.

The death of economic America started during Nixons and Kissingers trip to China. Nothing has been the same since then. They were just the first travelers, followed by the New World Thinkers, Bankers and Business Globalists.

Chicago has lost so much diversified manufacturing, with little to replace it. Gone are Western Electric, GTE, Bell and Howell, Searle and a multitude of others. To what end? Destruction of labor competition, embracing cheap manufacturing abroad and growing government dependence for the ignorant masses.

What we had is not coming back - as there is little cultural memory left in the remaining population. We are traveling through the looking glass and many will not survive the journey.

Hydraulic fracturing in Michigan: Waiting for the boom
Low natural gas prices, export ban delay ignition
By Jay Greene
...."
"We are measuring to see how much gas is coming back," Ford said. "It is too early to know if it is economically viable to produce the gas, have enough to put it on the market."

Ford said Michigan has large reserves of wet gas, which includes propane and butane, and the production of liquified petroleum gas, or petrol, for vehicles.

"Liquid gas is more valuable than dry gas," she said. "Our plan is to continue a one-rig program (exploration) in Michigan through 2013."

Chip Minty, manager of media relations for Devon Energy Corp., said the company completed several exploratory wells last fall. The Oklahoma City-based company holds leases for about 240,000 acres in Michigan.

"We don't have any projects planned going forward. We are still evaluating our test results," said Minty, adding that he was not sure when the analysis would be completed.

Last year, Devon received $2.5 billion from Sinopec, a Chinese oil company, to pay for drilling in several areas, including the A-1 and Collingwood formations in Gladwin, Clare and Ogemaw counties in Michigan.

Schwank said it doesn't make economic sense for drilling companies to go into full production now when gas prices are low at about $3 per thousand cubic feet. He estimated that natural gas prices would need to hit around $8 per thousand cubic feet before companies started drilling.

"The industry follows the spot price in such a huge way," said Roland Zullo, a professor at UM's Institute for Research on Labor, Employment and the Economy.

But if Congress eliminates the current ban on gas exportation, Cote said, Michigan could be well-positioned for a boom. Production also is expected to increase over the next decade as more coal-fired plants and vehicles are converted to less-expensive and lower polluting natural gas, he said.

"It is just a matter of time before the federal government realizes we have so much of it and there is no risk of a rise in prices by exporting gas," Cote said. "

I sell to homeowners in South Chicago.  I eat in black restaurants and neighborhoods.  I get glares,  stares and various looks of hatred.  See,  I am not black.  I am making a living and feeding my family and feeding the beast that is federal, state and local government.  I am feeding the State Police that have 5 cruisers at a freeway off ramp looking for seat belt violators so that in addition to their salaries and pensions until they die they can milk a few more dollars from my wallet.  Cell phone use tickets are 75 dolars first offense.  There are no police guarding me when I walk back to my car after a sales call to find it broken in to yet again.  There are no cops there when 4 or 5 natives try to intimidate me with their jeers and stares and curses.  This is America.  This is diversity.  This is a Democrat city but that matters not.  This is a big municipal unions and school board town but that matters not.  There is blowing an ill wind.  What is coming is not the 68 riots which I witnessed.  What is coming will put that to shame.  I do not know the spark but I do know the tinder is very, very dry.   There is an ill wind blowing.  Know your neighbors as someday soon you may be wishing you had treated them better.  America,  I harldy know you any more.  Sad,  really really sad.

It is not suicidal if you work only during day light hours. I worked in many of Detroit’s poorest neighborhoods that after dark had a murder on average every 10 days. In these places you do not wander off more than 5 yards from the businesses surveillance cameras. The population there understood you don’t commit crimes in daylight while cameras are watching or your going up the river for a long time. And yes CC is a good backup…

The Chicago  that was, from 1960 to 1990 is no more. The downtown glitz is better and brighter. The Cubs, Bears and Sox are supported as much by the suburbs as the city residents. People rave about the bars and food and the shopping, while black on black crime is unstoppable. The school system, except for the Charter Schools is a cesspool of ignorance.

Yet most city and suburban residents only see the political games. They do not want to see what you are describing. A week without food, a month without the EBT cards and you will not have any Police presence on the streets - yet residents believe they are safe.

Your best bet is to have a place in a rural county. Illinois, Michigan or Wisconsin are good bets. At least you will be a long walking distance away from those searching for food and other life essentials.

Stay safe and careful. Your best defense is to not be in that environment, but we can all respect your ability to make a living.

deerhunter,

When you said, Know your neighbors as someday soon you may be wishing you had treated them better, that struck a nerve with me.

Both of my neighbors are black. I'm white and semi-retired, work from home, have enough to get by in suburban Rochester, NY (Irondequoit). My neighbors RESENT me and my lifestyle. Why? Well, they're working and I'm pretty much not. They're debt-slaves and I'm not. There's a shopping plaza about 1/4 mile down the street from my house, which is the very same house I grew up in (1958 forward).

Until the mid-1970s there were virtually no blacks in Irondequoit and the plaza was 100% white. The county planners widened a road from the city to the plaza and now the place looks like a mix between Soweto and Rio. Often, I am the only white person in the whole plaza, and, the seagull population has flourished thanks to Little Caesar's. The fucking niggers (yeah, I'm using the N word because it applies) eat the pizza and wings in their cars and throw the crusts and bones into the parking lots. Tons of seagulls enjoying the new-found food source.

In the city of Rochester (population 212,000) there are 46,000 properties that are 3 or more years behind on taxes. I put that in bold for a reason. 46-fucking-thousand. Do. The. Math.

Rochester, NY is the next Detroit, complete with our second black mayor, Lovely Warren (I kid you not, that's her name), as corrupt and aloof as they come. Nothing is being done to change the culture of decay. Some say they're actually making it worse (probably true).

I'm about 2 miles from one shithole part of the city, but it is rapidly moving my way, thanks to politicians and banksters (tons of vacant foreclosures around here). The city and county and towns will not do anything to lower the abysmal property tax burden which is close to the highest in the country. They will not cut budgets, staff or pensions. I plan on living here about another 2-3 years before it becomes unbearable. I have a place in the country which I am developing and there I will move.

Rochester, NY is nearly bankrupt, but the city leaders carry on as if the economy is flourishing. It's a dead end, a huge dead end, with broken promises for hundreds of thousands of government pensioners (cops, teachers, etc.) who will get what they deserve... about 1/4 of what they were promised.

I'm not certain, but many other NE cities are in the same situation. Keep an eye on Rochester, NY, once one of the richest areas of the country, soon to be Detroit II. I give it three years, tops, before the whole thing burns.

46,000 properties not paying taxes. Yeah. That'll work.

That's nothing.

You should read this. It's for the American people.

http://www.countercurrents.org/ghista140108.htm

Come and see our overflowing morgues and find our little ones for us . . .
You may find them in this corner or the other, a little hand poking out, pointing out at you . . .
Come and search for them in the rubble of your "surgical" air raids, you may find a little leg or a little head . . . pleading for your attention.
Come and see them amassed in the garbage dumps, scavenging morsels of food . . .

Well over half of our little ones are under-nourished or dying from disease. Cholera, dysentery, infections of all sorts. . . .
Under-nourished does not mean on a diet like your fat little kids. . . . . It means starved.

Come and see, come. . . ." [“Flying Kites” Layla Anwar]

In 2008, TARP funds should have been used to stop foreclosures, the original purpose of TARP.  Detroit should have suspended real estate tax collections for the first $100,000 assessed value of homes.  Instead, the government under Bush and Obama bailed out Wall Street with $700 billion in TARP money (borrowed on the United States' credit card, the National Debt), the ZIRP and the discount window opened wide to big banks (whom were busy foreclosing homes using forged  documents).  In 2014, the war on the middle class continues, as the Obama administration ignores US Bakruptcy Court judges' actions in wiping out corporate pension and health plans for employees, such as at American Airlines.  And for individuals getting coverage under the Affordable Care Act, the health insurance premiums for unsubsidized plans are skyrocketing, another economic blow to the middle class.

We see it in Karakas in Venezuela. We see it in Thailand. We saw it in the Soviet Union back in the 1990’es. We saw it in Yugoslavia back in the 1990’es. I've got an idea.

Let's develop a culture based on the automobile fueled by cheap oil we steal from the east through a worthless petrodollar, and then, once everyone has two gas guzzling cars in every garage, let's create a false scarcity in oil and cause the automotive industry to shift to consuming Japanese fuel efficient automobiles.  Then, once everyone has cheap fuel efficient automobiles, and all nations around the world have accepted the worthless petrodollar and we have stolen all their wealth and left them in debt, let's inflate a huge derivatives bubble and insure it for collapse, and then we can rake in even more money.

So what if this causes the demise of the working class, their homes, their equity, their savings, and their very lives.  Where do you think the money will come from to pay off our derivatives bets?  We have to steal it back from the workling man!

Unpaid debt is another under rater way to steal. Looking at Detroit we see this once again confirmed. A mirage is a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays are bent to produce a displaced image of distant objects. Joining the idea of a mirage and contagion with the reality of collapsing debt forms an interesting subject.

It is important to remember all debts and obligations do not come due at the same time. Also, it must be noted when a bill is not paid or defaults it often starts a long and drawn out legal battle, this collection process that may extend years without harsh consequences. This my friends is the reality of modern life in America and much of the world. More on this subject in the article below.

Let's do Detroit Accounting: who among the Federal Reserve and the bank shitheads had deals in Detroit and money ended up in a Cayman Island account?

How can the banks and their financial instruments be screwed now? Each person in Detroit can document a way, and send the Excel spreadsheet to their US Senate or House Representative. With 10 financial lobbyists for every Member of Congress, word will be circulated back fast enough.

Detroit represents a middle class testing ground for screwing bankers at their own game: how many mortgages belly-up? how many student loans refused (my child absolutely does not have a student loan). How many credit cards defaulted on? Then proceed with making Detroit sustainable and renewable, and total the amount denied to bankers.

This article on Detroit throws reality directly in our face. What do stock markets around the world have in common with "girls gone wild" the video of college girls on spring break? The answer is both are crazy out of control. We have grown very complacent as money around the world has continued to flow into intangibles and promises.

Currently the market is all a twitter and locked in a "greed and stupidity loop." The loop can be explained as follows, stocks are rising so why get out, not getting out is causing the stocks to rise. When stocks do pullback it is a buying opportunity. Yes, we are indeed experiencing a double down and let it ride mentality. I don't have to explain the greed part. More on this subject in the article below.

China will probably buy it all up and build a solar farm.

They can use all the tall abandoned skyscrappers as solar collectors for mirror arrays.

;p

I wonder how much the GM building will sell for, gota sell for atleast the scrap value of the steel.

This is what socialism money printing and regulation (only against the little guy because the big guys are always immune from regulation anyway) creates, poverty and distress.

People need to be free to do whatever the fuck they need/want to do, or nothing gets done, because if you are not free to do whatever it is that you want to do, you dont want to do anything, because then the only shit you are left with that you can do, is the stuff you dont wana do, and who wants to do that?

From the looks of a lot of the pictures, investors or whoever is dumb enough to buy this land, are just buying a bunch of houses next to eachother, and destroying 3 /4  houses they own to make a parking lot for the one house they left.

I guess they are trying to increase land value, by destroying the supply of homes and getting rid of the junk houses (even though the ones they left are pretty much shit anyway also).

Best thing to do, would be to get rid of it all, and make it farm land or solar farms or just use it as weapons test range for the military (atleast get some use out of it)?

Why it happened is quite simple: people thinking they have a right to stuff they didn't earn. That is not how the USA became great - quite the opposite.

You are exactly right on that point. I never forgot the big stink when I was working at GM in Detroit’s Rencen and GM was closing plants in the Midwest and building new ones down south.

In the middle of the discussion Crains Detroit defended GM said it had to be done. The pointed out a GM worker in Michigan has about $45 in wages and benefits per hour. The same job for a Toyota worker in Alabama in the new start up plant was making $17 in wages and benefits per hour. How was GM going to compete?

The article caused such rage in the UAW I got a call that night and was told not to report to work until notified. It seems the streets in front of GM’s Detroit headquarters were mobbed with protesters. The word was all GM’s plants were going to have wild cat shut downs in the coming days.

Shortly after the Crains article, GM backed down on most of the planned plant closings. Many years later when GM finally went bankrupt I noticed that all of the plants listed by GM back in my day were now actually being closed.

It's because bankers are running the show. They're the best thinking they deserve (so they grab) stuff they didn't earn. Lots of stuff.

Plus, prestigious universities teach precisely how to do that.
