Al-Qaeda Jihadis Loot Over $400 Million From Mosul Central Bank, Seize Saddam's Hometown

Tyler Durden's picture

As reported yesterday, in yet another humiliating blow to US foreign policy and the State Department, Al Qaeda-linked ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham) militants took over the key northern town of Mosul, where an unknown number of US-made Black Hawk helicopters were parked and have been captured by Al Qaeda (potentially the same forces that have been trained by the US across the border in Syria).

Adding insult to injury the Al Qaeda militants also appear to have looted some $429 million from local banks. From IBtimes:

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (Isis) has become the richest terror group ever after looting 500 billion Iraqi dinars - the equivalent of $429m (£256m) - from Mosul's central bank, according to the regional governor.

Nineveh governor Atheel al-Nujaifi confirmed Kurdish televison reports that Isis militants had stolen millions from numerous banks across Mosul. A large quantity of gold bullion is also believed to have been stolen.

Following the siege of the country's second city, the bounty collected by the group has left it richer than al-Qaeda itself and as wealthy as small nations such as Tonga, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and the Falkland Islands.

The financial assets that Isis now possess are likely to worsen the Iraqi governement's struggle to defeat the insurgency, which is aimed at creating an Islamic state across the Syrian-Iraqi border.

In other words, now that it is armed with US-made weapons, this particular al-Qaeda group also happens to be the world's richest terror force!

And so with all disposable cash it needs for a long time and armed to the teeth, what is Al Qaeda to do? Why continue expanding of course. Moments ago, via Reuters, we got confirmation that the "insurgents" have just captured yet another symbolic Iraqi town, Tikrit: the birthplace of none other than Saddam.

Sunni insurgents overran parts of the Iraqi city of Tikrit on Wednesday, security sources said.

Tikrit, which is located 150 km (95 miles) north of Baghdad, is the hometown of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein

And on the map:

Will they stop here? Of course not. Expect the ISIS force to continue south until finally it overruns Baghdad itself and until all of Iraq, courtesy of a crippled army, officially belongs to Al Qaeda. America's job is done here.

One can't wait until Al Qaeda is also in charge of all the other countries recently liberated by the US and/or CIA.

We were in it from the Iran-Iraq War when we reflagged Kuwaiti Tankers with our Ensigns to defend their and others' Shipping Routes.  (Operation Earnest Will)

Kinda hard to look the other way when we defended them recently - even more so when the Iraqis mowed them down w/o much armed provocations.

It would be funny to see what would have happened if Saddam actually rushed Saudi Arabia after overrunning Kuwait. Talk about the diffuculty of doing a 6 Month Build-up elsewhere (don't think UAE or Yemen would oblige) while Oil Fields and Rigs were taken over, pumping up the Px.  We didn't have Carriers in the Gulf during Operation Earnest Will.  We probably would have had to fight from the Sea and from Qatar, Oman, and/or Egypt.

I'm sorry, what side was Al Quaeda on?  Do they still have problems with the Royal House of Saud?  Can they buy enough Tanks, Missiles,  and Planes w/Cheap Iraqi Oil traded in non-USD to do pull this off?

I can't help but remember the classic "Mission Accomplished" banner.

The only mission is of course to give meaning to the MIC, and for thirteen years, they have managed, in a list of countries now so long that I can't even remember them all, to provide enough war to keep the machine chugging along, providing loot for the owners and jobs for the minions of the companies that benefit.  The only thing that truly shocks me at this point is that there remain ANY people who believe that there is any purpose to these wars other than to feed the war machine.  The terrorism excuse is an absurdity, and yet I guess it goes to show that there are some truly thick people born into the world.  I'm no longer angry at this point, but every day I grow sadder that our species continues in this pattern of self-destruction.  We are indeed limited by our biology, I guess. :(

This is Barack Hussein Obama's foreign policy on full display. There can be no glossing over it. Just how long will it be to put the most extreme Islamists back in control of Iraq? Why was there no US forces left behind to keep this from happening? A little over a year maybe before Al Qaeda overran the third largest city which just so happens to control the largest oil region in Iraq.

In Egypt BHO supported the Muslim Brotherhood. In Syria BHO supports the most extreme Islamists which most believe are Al Qaeda.

This is truly insane that the American people put up with this president's policy.

However, having said that, the difference between the parties is not to be measured by the difference between Bush and Obama, but by the difference between their respective rank and file.

Seriously ... can anyone even imagine the Democrats doing to Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid or any of those other odious heaps of offal what the Republicans did to Eric Cantor? Mike Castle? Charlie Crist? Lisa Mukowski?

Etc. The only genuine change taking place in this country is comiing from the Republican rank and file.

DO you understand, Mr President?

Uh, err, yeah.

In return, we care not what kind of domestic policy you pursue in your own country. Marxism? Fascism? So be it. As long as it does not affect the Financial power. As long as it does not affect Control. Are we clear?

Err, uhhh, yessir.

We have plans within plans. You and I will never meet again. Can I count on you?

Err, Uhh, Yessir.

For some reason I had a hard time countering the arc of the 55gr and 62gr balls until I fired a tracer a few times. The visualization immediately helped me counter for the arc and hit dead center along a range to 300 yds. When I was younger I could pop them about 500 yds. For some reason that particular cartridge bedeviled me!

I love me some M4/M16. But, for a worst-case scenario, I am going with 7.62X39. I have a Russian rifle in that caliber that you can throw in a mud pile and still shoot.

Syria fizzled, Ukraine is slipping out of their grasp, so now this.

Just seems kinda like something fishy is being lined up...

Ted Cruz (goldman sachs ties) saying Israel could attack in the coming months.

Sounds like the banksters are looking to attempt another clusterfuck to escalate so they can blame/distract on the collapse.

Maybe this'll be an excuse for them. They'll say that they have to go after these highly funded terrorists. So the'll have to attack Iran and start up again in Iraq to protect Israel.

It is called The Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

I suggest it as a great read. The man who wrote it was probably killed for it.

As soon as the oilfields get captured, the U.S. will have no other alternative but to go back in to restore order.

Ok, to be honest, I'm actually quite surprised...

I had no idea that Banks actually kept stacks of hundreds of millions of dinars/dollars/currency in CASH lying around anywhere in the world.

I could sort of get it if this was NYC or London and several million People were all banging the atms for $20s all weekend long; but,...

IF $400M was lying around in a third world regional 'Central Bank' then the amounts stacked in the major regional Banks serving NYC or London or... must be of orders of magnitude larger?
