America's Record Political And Ideological Divide In Charts

Tyler Durden's picture

One hardly needs more charts to understand that over the past 6 years America has never become more ideologically and politically divided, but here, just to hammer that point, is the latest survey of 10,000 adults from Pew confirming just this.

In a nutshell, after some modest convergence to the center in the last decade of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st, Americans have radically polarized their views and have grown further apart politically and culturally to never before seen degrees. The "median democrat" has become more ideologically consistent with other liberals, while the "median republican", with other conservatives. Furthermore, both sides are more disapproving of those they disagree with.

Finally those at the extremes are most vocal, as the dwindling center has grown frustrated by both wings. And not helping matters is a Congress, which courtesy of the Fed's monetary policy which is now extensively used in lieu of a functioning fiscal process ("Get to work Mr. Chairman"), means that dissatisfaction with the broken legislative branch has never been higher, even if the stock market is at all time highs.

An animation of America's record polarization

NEW: How political polarization in America is affecting politics, compromise & everyday life http://pewrsr.ch/2014polarization

And in charts:

Democrats and Republicans More Ideologically Divided than in the Past

Republicans Shift to the Right, Democrats to the Left

More Democrats Take Liberal Positions, More Republicans Take Conservative Positions

Growing Minority Holds Consistent Ideological Views

Polarization Surges Among the Politically Engaged

Growth in Ideological Polarization Sharper among Politically Engaged

Growing Gaps between Republicans and Democrats

Ideological Self-Placement Mostly Corresponds to Political Values, With Some Exceptions

Compromise in the Eye of the Beholder

Liberals, Conservatives Want Their Side to Get More of What It Wants

"The Progressive Left and the Libertarian Right "

you meant the progressive left and the progressive right didn't you?  the libertarian right are the ones getting vilified as the anti-christ, terrorists, extremists, anti-Americans and assorted other bullshit by both progressives right now.

What the media has to say is important only in that it can effect opinion.

What I'm talking about is the left-right coalition that is coming together on the issues I noted.  The definition of progressive, libertarian, left, right are not the issue.  We have a populist consensus no matter what the media spin has to say.

Really, the consensus is in effect IN-SPITE of the media disinformation.

There is only one party worth belonging to: The Anti-Oligarchy Party. For the Iron Law of Oligarchy is what defines the corruption that befalls every other form of government. If you've got a good king, it's better to have him rule than the barons. If you've got a Republic, you're fine until the corporatocracy gets its grip firmly on the levers of power.

Focus first on the pocketbooks of the people being picked by those in power and put a stop to it as the Founding Fathers did.

Every other issue is a wedge issue meant to divide.

I think any poll can read wildly different depending on the wording used because many people are unaware of the dictionary definition of what a word means compared to the definition they may assume it to mean.

For example, picture an x axis sliding scale with values left to right of 1 to 10. I put 'individual rights" at 1 and 'State control' at 10. the subject is asked to pick a number which corresponds to his philosophy of where they feel a compromise point lies.

Now imagine the same but replace the left term with "Anarchy" and the right term with "Community responsibility."

In the first example I will expect to see the medium shift to the left and in the second, a shift to the right, simply because of the terminology used.

Pollsters can try to use neutral terms but only the respondents can determine what is neutral to them.

Add into the mix the insipid soundbite noise that most people get from MSM that gets reflected back in a poll and it's hard to see how any useful conclusions can be drawn from the data.

You do what you can with what you get and stick it out there with a theory of what you see and call it Sociology.

It's something all right. But hardly a science.

fuck this article and fuck pew research.

as long as people believe that 'the people' believe what is stated on these 'surveys' and 'graphs' , they still believe what they are being told to believe.

just use your eyes and ears  to look at primary sources, don't look at graphs.

A wonderful exercise in promulgating the false duality of "Republican and Democratic", "Liberal and Conservative", and the many other "fault lines" used to divide us, then conquer us.

I think a lot of this has to do with who is in the White House.

If your man is not willing to compromise than neither will you.

Some Presidents bring the country together - Obama is not one of them.

Yes, Thank You President Obama - for making a radically polarizing and segmenting every part of society so you can get 51% of the votes, by hook or by crook - mostly the later.  This fucking asshole, excuse my French, has a) destroyed the American Dream for the majority of Americans for the foreseeable future, b) upended any semblance of a consistent foreign policy (causing more Americans and allied lives to be imperiled than at any time in our history, d) producing hatred between groups that disagree, rather than simply having groups with different opinions agree to disagree, etc.

Obama, and that sleazebag, asshat, Axelrod, and well as Obama's butch of a beastly wife are responsible for making our country more divisive than at any time prior to the Civil War.

Fuck Him!  He should be impeached, convicted and (no, not given the Nixon treatment) put before a firing squad for the dozens of egregious, wanton and intentional acts committed against the good and the will of the American people and our Constitution.

He commits high crimes, misdemeanors and felonies on an hourly basis.

I was a moderate until this fuck-wad was in office for a week.  My political feelings have moved right in tandem with the graphs shown above.

Does it really matter which way the sheeple vote?  If they are voting, they are accepting the debt slavery and everything else that the status quo has hung around their necks.

Nothing new.

'American' societies are State societies.

'Americans' run a business of extorting the weak, farming the poor.

The State is the essential tool to run that business.

'American' societies are extremelly hostile.

Today, that is 'americans' vs 'americans'.

The best way to protect yourself from the hostility of an 'american' society is to get your hands on the major tool to inflict hostility, the State.

Those two 'american' factions are fighting for the control over the State. As resources get scarcer (even though the world remains an abundant place), control over the State is vital.

Nothing new. The usual for an 'american' society.
