As The Daily Mail reports, blood-thirsty jihadists are carrying out summary executions on civilians, Iraqi soldiers and police officers - including 17 in one street alone - on their warpath to Baghdad, the UN said today. As a shocking picture of the ISIS insurgency continues to develop, the Islamist group are posting barbaric videos online with the intent of showing the world they will stop at nothing to achieve their end game. The aim is to terrorise Sunnis in Iraq's army and police forces and deepen their already low morale. It appears to be working as that fear is one factor behind the stunning collapse of Iraqi security forces.

You are right. Like Einstein once said, the universe and human stupidity has its limits....but I am not sure about human stupidity.
It's not so much lunacy as it is desperation. I once thought that GW Bush's invasion of Iraq in the first place was that of a lunatic, but I later came to believe that it was done out of total desperation, out of total fear of losing control over global oil markets: sanctions were to run out on Saddam and that after these he would be able to exercise more nationalistic influence over the oil, which would in turn affect the global markets; Gulf War I was about setting in sanctions before all the old oil treaties were to run out, to buy time for the West to try and oust him and get in someone who would be more of an NWO player.
Things make a whole lot more sense when you understand the fact that ALL wars are about resources.
Every major action Obama has taken in the middle east has helped pave the way for this. If he had PLANNED to help launch the caliphate, he couldn't have done a better job.

This started with the purposeful disintegration of Libya. As we know, "militants" and weapons were moved from Libya to Syria via Turkey. They were used to begin the disintegration of Syria. All that has morphed into a variety of poorly defined groupings, lots of new recruits, probably some controlled by intelligence agencies, others going rogue. No doubt money and equipment support given to these people in Syria are now being used in Iraq. Add that to the Sunni/Shia issues in Iraq and it's goodnight Irene.
Iraq will never be Iraq again. Nor will Syria. What's now to rise will be interesting to watch. Iran will surely annex Shia southern Iraq with its oil and ocean access. That's probably already the case. What exactly will the land-locked Sunni jihad state have? The Kurds have the other major oil sector. They will be able to extort funds to keep the pipelines operating and open.
What a colossal mess.

You seem to forget the large American military presence there the first time. Also, the pretense of a mixed government in Baghdad, with Shia and Sunni, is long gone. Iraq was becoming a Shia/Iran colony and Sunnis, once dominate in Baghdad, were slaughtered and driven out. The Sunnis want Baghdad back. ISIS/ISIL is already trying to control its behavior in Mosul and have, according to an article here, increased the daily electric output in Mosul. So we shall have to await developments.
