Convoys Of Russian Tanks Heading For Ukraine Border Ahead Of 2amET Deadline
As the 'negotiations' between Europe, Ukraine, and Russia were taking place this afternoon, technically unconfirmed reports of convoys of Russian military vehicles moving towards the Ukraine border were growing. As the 2amET gas-cut-off deadline looms, it appears Putin is mobilizing a significant force ahead of what will likely mean retaliatory actions by either Ukraine military forces or Ukraine militants. As InfoResist reports, up to 200 units are moving towards Ukraine from Kaluga and in the Rostov region, Russia.
Multiple sources also confirm the movement of a large convoy of military vehicles in the Rostiv region towards the border of Ukraine...
And a column of military equipment near Novoshahtinsk...
We are sure this move will be denigrated in the West as an act of aggression... since not only did the Russians decline to play by the West's rules and take a sizable haircut ($300 vs $500) on their already-delivered debt but are now moving military into place to protect its borders...

Ukraine's new president, according to The FT, is already asking for the west to imopose fresh sanctions on Russia.

Since the Self Defense Forces in East Ukraine are winning hands down, I doubt these troop movements are about entering Ukraine proper. I think they are coming to secure the borders if and when the gas is shut off, and Kiev then has nothing to lose. Washington wants Russia to invade. and Putin knows this. I am guessing, but my guess is this is a show of force to tell Kiev, better act nice when the gas goes off, as we are fully prepared to deal with provocations. I do guess though, that a gas shut off is a real threat now, as the troops would not be moving if the gas shut down was not real.
As for prices, Kiev is getting a very good deal. The supplier is not going to give the gas away for free, as Kiev seems to expect. But remember this, Kiev makes no decisions, decisions are made in Washington. Whores like Nuland and apes like Obama do the deciding.

I figured there was another pipeline or this story would have been even bigger. Yes, we are glutted with nat gas, too bad it's not easily transported, but then again, that's why there is a bifurcated international market in price. Maybe long-term building LNG capacity makes business sense.
If the Ukrainians play nice, the gas gets metered on both sides of the Ukraine, and the EU gets charged for the missing gas.
If they don't play nice, then yea, a new pipeline will have to go through Slovakia or Poland.

It is easy to sympathize today with deires for less government and local government.
It is less easy to sympathize when people are willing to kill and die to trade one set of totalitarian Oligarch Overlords for another.
The Lugansk commander's strategy has not been one desiged to win on his own. He has been facing greater numbers and more capable equipment head-on in a way that will result in catastrophic loss without Russian intervention, rather than using the asymetrical techniques that could earn him a victory on Lugansk's own terms.
Unfortunately, it puts the lie to the freedom-loving propaganda. He isn't playing the way a freedom-lover would play. He is simply playing in to the arms of a different Oligarch.
Maybe he thinks he has no choice?
But a slave who wants freedom is more sympathetic than one who simply wants a different owner.
If Oligarchs wore masks they would be indistinguishable from one another.
Here are a couple of details on the tanks pictured.
- These tanks have skirts that partially cover the tracks. That means these are something newer than T62's. Six road wheels rather than five confirm it. (Older tank models have only 5 road wheels)
- These tanks have an IR Spotlight on the left side of the Gun (as viewed from outside) and the tank commander's port - the cuppola - on the opposite side. You can see the hatch to the cuppola clearly open on the first three tanks, with soldiers standing or sitting at the port. The hatch looks like a manhole cover standing on end. If these were T72's, T80s, or T90s the spotlight and the cuppola would be on the same side.
CONCLUSION:
These are T64s.
The T64 is an obsolete tank no longer in common use by Russian forces. They are stored in various places on either side of the Russian/Ukraine border and they are still in common use by Ukrainians.
The US State Department claims these are Russian tanks sent to help separatists within the borders of the Ukraine.
I don't believe it. But what I believe is less important than WHY I don't believe it.
Here's why I don't believe it:
See all those little squares on the tanks? That is "reactive" armor - basically explosives that disrupt the molten metal of an incoming tank round.
Reactive Armor was not commonly put on Soviet tanks until AFTER the sillicate armor in the turrets was shown to be ineffective against Western Tanks in Desert Storm in 1991. HOWEVER...the T64 was already not being used by Russia in 1991. In the poor Russian economy of the 1990s they didn't have the money to retrofit tanks that were not being used. They only retrofitted T72s and T80s in Russia (T90s already had reactive armor).
But, as I said, the T64 continues to be used by Ukraine. The T64 WAS retrofitted in the 1990s & 2000s by UKRAINE.
For the reasons I stated, I think there is a good chance these are Ukrainian tanks performing a demonstration for the purpose to present the false impression that Russia is intervening.
