Japan's Plan To Freeze Fukushima With An "Ice Wall" Is Melting Down
Who could have possibly foreseen this?
A year ago we wished TEPCO the best of luck with the construction of the "Game of Thrones"-esque 1.4km giant wall of ice that was designed to surround the exploded Fukushima power plant and slow the movement of irradiated water below the damaged reactors, preventing it from flowing over into the ocean and surrounding land. A plan so idiotic we were at a loss for words trying to list the ways it could go wrong (we didn't bother with how it could go right because it clearly couldn't).
And, as it turns out, making a project overly complicated and ridiculous doesn't assure it will be a success. Quite the contrary. As Japan JIJI reports, Tepco said the project, which remains in its early stages, is experiencing a problem with an inner ice wall designed to contain highly radioactive water that is draining from the basements of the wrecked reactors.
A Tepco spokesman added that "We have yet to form an ice plug because we can’t get the temperature low enough to freeze the water."
Oh, you mean to say that a he plan whose success relies on freezing water may fail because... it is impossible to get the water to freeze? Truly some of the smartest Japanese scientists must have been behind this brilliant strategy, or at least those who were not involved in the planning of the BOJ's QE program of course.
The underlying idea was simple enough... on paper.
Trenches are being dug for a huge network of pipes under the plant that will have refrigerant pumped through them. If successful, it would freeze the soil and form a physical barrier, significantly slowing the rate at which uncontaminated groundwater flows into the reactor basements and becomes contaminated.
The coolant used in the operation is an aqueous solution of calcium chloride, which is cooled to minus 30 degrees. The ice wall employs the same technology as the trench project and involves the same contractor, Kajima Corp.
Alas, the reality is proving to be far more complicated than theory - just ask the Fed:
The idea of freezing a section of the ground was proposed last year. Engineers have used the technique to build tunnels near watercourses. But scientists point out it has never been used on such a large scale, or for the length of time Tepco is proposing.
Coping with the huge amount of water at the plant is proving to be a major challenge for Tepco, as it tries to clean up the mess after the worst nuclear disaster in a generation.
As well as having to collect vast quantities of water used to cool the melted down reactors, Tepco has been pumping up and storing water that drains down from inland mountains to the sea.
Full decommissioning of the plant is expected to take several decades. An exclusion zone remains in place, and experts warn that some former residential areas may have to be abandoned as settlements because of persistently high levels of radiation.
May have to be abandoned? Can't Japan just raise the minimum safe radiation dosage as it did back in 2011. That way people can assume they are still safe. And after all the whole exercise is to boost confidence, isn't it.
In conclusion: “We are behind schedule, but have already taken additional measures, including putting in more pipes, so that we can remove contaminated water from the trench starting next month,” a spokesman said.
Wait, wasn't the issue the temperature of the water, not the number of pipes. Oh who cares anyway, as long as someone pretends to be doing some work to "fix" the world's worst nuclear accident in history, having long since surpassed Chernobyl in severity. One can't have the locals realize the government is hopeless and that the Fukushima situation was a complete disaster from the start, and what's worse, one which can not be fixed. Especially now that Abenomics has failed, and the Nikkei is still down for the year, thus not providing the required dose of distraction from an increasingly irradiated life.

As OPERATORS. Depends on the operational situation. And, as far as I am aware, The US Navy (isn't "USN Navy" redundant?) can relocate their reactors all over the place, as in "hide" or minimize problems. And, wasn't it the US military that helped externalize all these kinds of costs out on the civilian world? "GE, we bring good things to life"- for those who claim this is the fault of the Japanese ONLY, guess again, most major companies dealing with sensitive/complex things tend to closely monitor/supervise the application of those things, requiring certification etc.. And here we have GE just handing over extremely complex and dangerous shit to a bunch of hacks?

Well, it's all fun and games until they have a fuel storage pool meltdown, then the entire northern hemisphere dies. On a long enough timeline or until fukushima goes full fucktard, everyone will be glowing... and really dead.

The Youtube video, based around analysis of FOIA documents from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is a must watch. While the actual documents are even more interesting once you sift through the clutter.
The worse case scenario has already happened: 4 core meltdowns, zirconium fires, melt-throughs and possible melt outs. And of course the spent fuel rod pools of reactors 3 and 4 burnt down. This will kill hundreds of millions over the next one hundred years, but it is no extinction event- it just going to make life a misery for the Pacific, Japan and the West coast of the US.
p.s. It's unclear if the fuel rod storage pools in buildings 1 and 2 are intact, or have burnt down. These documents mainly concern buildings 3 and 4; particularly 4.
I apologize in advance for these ignorant questions : does not the pacific ocean have enough diluting capacity to absorb much of the pollutants? How does the tainted water eventually reach western USA? In my silly mind I picture a massive truck of dust falling into the Japanese sea, and remain baffled that it makes it beyond 20 miles. Be kind!
Now putting on my construction hat, I believe the containment idea is logistically impossible. There would be thousands if not tens of thousands of concrete trucks involved in the containment construction. They come in clean and leave unclean. Do you think the near by citizenry would put up with that? Not even bringing up the issue of who volunteers for the mission. Maybe a plant far enough away? You cant pump concrete past the safe zone. Again who volunteers? Helicopters? . . . . please
The radioactive dust, plus the dust particles of burnt out fuel rods has scattered throughout Japan, much of the Northern Pacific and across much of North America. The hydrogen explosions and fires enabled materials to be blown everywhere, but most of it has been absorbed by water vapour and particles in the atmosphere. It's due to water vapour that much of the material has travelled a long distance thanks to condensation and jet streams.
Even trace amounts are enough to greatly increase the chances of contracting acute blastic leukemia. But this leukemia may not happen for years after a significant exposure to radiation, it could be ten, twenty or even thirty years before this leukemia develops. But when it does, it starts in the white blood cells and then spreads everywhere else.
In Neveda, there are a group of people known as the Atomic Veterans- marines in the 50s and 60s who were placed in nuclear test sites so that scientists could study the effects of nuclear fallout. Most of them died from cancer either shortly after the tests, or many years later due to acute blastic leukemia. But the fallout as it spread also spiked cancer rates many hundreds of miles downwind from the test sites; and cancer and leukemia only increased.
As for the Pacific Ocean, well contaminated water from Fukushima has always poured into the sea. Sometimes in small amounts, sometimes in larger amounts when TEPCO needed more water to cool down the melted reactor cores. There's all these models which show a plume of radioactive water being generated from Fukushima immediately after the tsunami, but then the the plume's source 'dries up' so to speak after several weeks. But in reality there has always been a flow of contaminated water, TEPCO admitted this last year. Sure it dilutes but it is mainly going to stick around in the Northern Pacific due to gulf streams and ocean currents.
As for containing the situation. Well the best bet is a concrete sarcophagus, it needs to have an extremely thick base to stop the molten cores from sinking any further, and it needs to have a perimeter to block any water inside. This should have been done from day 1, as should have constant injections of lead and boric acid. But to my knowledge, TEPCO has not even attempted to construct an underground seal and given that three years have passed it may be too late. The molten cores have sunk too deep, and they're still burning several thousand degrees centigrade hot at least. Why else did the steel frames of buildings 1, 2 and 3 (plus the roof of building 4) sag inwards and distort? Extreme heat coming from the molten reactors.
This is still not an extinction level event, but if you travel to Japan and stay there for some years, then you are severely increasing the risks of contracting thyroid cancer or leukemia in the long run. Plus you run the risk of breathing in hot particles -- the remnants of burnt out nuclear fuel and spent fuel rods -- and once lodged in an area of the body, the cells quickly mutate and a cancerous growth will follow. That's why the 2020 Olympics in Japan should be boycotted- imagine hosting Olympic games two hundred miles away from Chernobyl, and imagine that Chernobyl had never been contained. That's Fukushima but even worse.

Tall Tom has already pointed out that this might be the WORST solution. His reasoning, and I agree with him on it (having initially though that this notion of encapsulating with concrete was a good idea), is that it will contain extremely hot water which will likely end up boiling and blowing up in a huge steam cloud, potentially being far worse than the initial blow-up. You see, the notion of trying to freeze it is pretty much an acknowledgement of this, but, they really don't want to spell it out lest it demonstrate the full horror. In short: the problem is dissipation of heat (the radiation cannot be contained).
Sometimes what is viewed as a bad solution is really only the only solution, and that solution really won't solve the problem BECAUSE sometimes problems are unsolveable.
Someone mentioned David Suzuki earlier (and then someone suggested he's an Agenda 21 [or whatever] agent- for fuck's sake people, let's look at the messages rather than the messenger), well, it was his daughter who uttered some very trenchant words at a UN conference concerning various economic ills: "If you [grownups] don't know how to fix problems then don't create them."

A concrete containment vessel and a concrete sarcophagus are very distinct. With a sarcophagus there is no circulation and hence no dissipation of heat. With a (albeit crude) concrete cooling tower one could condense, recapture and recycle irradiated water vapor for cooling thus slowing the growth of the ever increasing supply of irradiated waste water to store (in the Pacific Ocean) and reducing the escape of irradiated water vapor into the atmosphere.

It might work in the water below Fukushima, I thought if someone made a GMO taking the radiotropic abilities from black mold and putting it into Giant Pacific Kelp, it would sponge up everything radioactive pretty efficiently, then you just need a way to dilute it and sink it to the ocean floor for long term storage.

For a country that can't figure out that placing the emergency backup generators for its NUCLEAR REACTORS up on top of a hill high above said reactors rather than BELOW SEA LEVEL in the reactors' basements might have been a good idea, or which precariously placed each reactor's temporary spent fuel pool several stories up rather than solidly on ground level, this inability to freeze a huge wall of ice underground around the entire plant comes as some sort of surprise?? I'd mentioned above that GE should have been responsible for ensuring that their highly complex and DANGEROUS equipment was competently deployed. I know that many companies have, in comparison, fairly benign products and that even for these they require specific licensing and or certification for use/installation. Seems that the nuketards were so much in a hurry to prove to humanity that the massive sums of money spent on research and all the horrors unleashed ON Japan was worth it that they had to get this shit out and working PRONTO.

Its pretty arrogant to think you can freeze a nuclear meltdown, not a nuc engineer but I bet the math never added up.
If I were in charge I'd build a barge fill it with waste and dump it into the Marianas trench in an active sedimentary deposit zone along a subduction zone, Id use giant remote loaders and keep loading and dumping till its safe for humans then sink the whole lot to be buried by sediment and 10 mill years of geologic drift.
They'd be done by now.
The goal is to keep out ground water, I don't understand why they are trying to box the whole place in instead of just sealing off the uphill side where ground water keeps flowing in.
Yeah, you go deal with the deadly radiation to load up that barge full of water, then you sink that water to the bottom of the salt water ocean. What kind of containers can you use to store 300 tons of water per day, and be sure they will be secure for hundreds of years in the ocean?
Remote control does not work, the radiation messes up the radiowaves and the electronics. Maybe IR could work, or autonomous robots, but even then they would need several foot think steel to prevent their internals from degrading too fast. They should make some of those vehicles they designed for the nuclear powered bombers.
And they need a nuclear powerplant to power that thing of course. So they need to restart of one these reactors there if they haven't already.

Maybe they can send the water to China and label it drinkable if frozen.
They should build a wall in the sea with a 1km radius around the plant. That would make better containement. Anyway what they really need to do is find the melted core (hint, they went through the bottom long ago) and poor lead on them to stop the reaction (lead is just a guess, I think that's what they used at Chernobyle. Or was it boron?).

The Vogtle Nuclear plant was ground zero but whew no damage reported.
This will not be reported on major news channels, however Lake Strom Thurmond, also known as Clarks Hill Lake in Georgia, is a reservoir at the border between Georgia and South Carolina in the Savannah River Basin. It was built between 1946 and 1954 by the Army Corps of Engineers at the confluence of the Little River and Savannah River. At 71,000 acres (287 km²), it is the 2nd largest artificial lake east of the Mississippi River. It was a shallow quake about 3 miles deep (the worst kind as far as damage goes). And it is reported to be 5.4, not 4.4 in magnitude.
This lake encompasses 1200 miles of shoreline and 71,100 acres of water. It dams some 120 miles of smaller lakes. Should the dam have been effected by the recent earthquake a virtual tidal wave would have swept down the Savannah River over the Savannah River Nuclear power plant and large areas of the south would soon have resembled Fukushima. The dam is two miles up river from Augusta Georgia and should it go, there will be no more Augusta, Georgia. At present the report is no damage as usual. Nothing to worry about until the next eruption of the New Madrid which has occurred every 200 years and is … well overdue.
As posted earlier there were sonic booms, waves across floors and people reporting it felt like a train was roaring outside their homes. Bathroom tiles were reported cracked in Athens, Georgia. Should any unexpected problems crop up, I fully expect a suicide army of workers to come from Japan and make things right exactly as they are doing in Fukushima. Wait-Fukushima is still spewing plutonium all over the globe.
I don't understand how this ice wall was supposed to work even in theory. Consider this: Irradiated water from the cis-reactor side of the ice dam will be continuously freezing into the ice matrix, while the ice on the trans-reactor side will melt at the margins and revert to groundwater (actually, melting and thawing will each occur on both sides of the ice dam; but since groundwater is flowing from the reactor to the sea, there will be a slow net migration of water through the ice barrier from cis to trans).
However, this will not result in much radiation transiting through the ice. Instead, the radioactive isotopes will be squeezed out of the ice matrix on the cis-reactor side in the process known as brine rejection. This will result in an ever-concentrating "coffee stain ring" of water-soluble radioactive isotopes immediately abutting the ice barrier on the cis-reactor side. Any failure of the ice barrier at that point would be instantly catastrophic, as months if not years worth of radioactive seepage will be released all at once.
To all those who have recommended a concrete barrier or pylon, however, you should be able to see that that is not going to work either. When civil engineers are building bridges or tunnels under ordinary circumstances, they do not concern themselves with stopping the flow of water altogether, only with temporarily keeping it out of a certain area by shunting it around it. There is no way to prevent Fukushima groundwater from flowing into the sea unless you also prevent water from flowing into the site in the first place. Thus you would have to pour a concrete barrier all the way around the site, upstream and downstream. But then how wll you keep the radioactive cores and spent fuel pools cool? You would have to keep pumping water into the site and then pumping it out again, and then find some place to dispose of the radioactive water, which is what nature is currently doing anyway.
There is no way to contain Fukushima. The best thing to do may be just to rinse it all into the ocean as soon as possible, or bury the whole thing under 50 feet of dirt.
I would hazzard a guess that nothing will work, nothing. It's beyond human capability. I wiould have thought letting the corium fuel blobs to fission would mean they'd just go China syndrome style deeper into the ground and eventually going away. So maybe, conversely, stopping the cooling would allow the blobs to tunnel their way into the mantle. Otheres have proposed that this could set off some sort of volcanic explosion, I don't understand why.
We've played with fire and we've been burnt. The fact that the Japanese government is covering this up is a stunning insight into the human condition. Humans are a fialed species. There are 500 of these reactors scattered around the world. They can never, in our lifetimes, have an uniterrupted supply of electrical power. NEVER. Fukushima is bound to be repeated many times more and if a third world war breaks out guess what the most strategic target within the country is - yes, it's domestic nuclear power.
All reading this post will most likely see the extinction of the human race within this lifetime. We simply do not have the will to switch off all nuclear power plants and place the fuel in safe storage. I think Fukushima may be survivable (MAYBE, depends on what happens to the Pacific and what consequences this has on the global food chain) but for this to happen again once, twice, three times is inevitable. 100% guaranteed. I doubt we can even appreciate how quickly the global food chain can collapse as well. All species are dependent on the next in a dance that has existed for billions of years.
If another nuclear accident were to happen in an area with a higher density of nuclear reactors the domino effect would be breathtaking as sites have to be abandoned due to fallout from other disasters, rendering those reactors infernos and spreading the disaster faster than a wild fire.
In our life I firmly believe we will see the extinction of the human race.

I include wholeheartedly myself in the description of humans as a failed species. I am certain we wuill have other catastrophic nuclear accidents that render most life on earth unviable. Yet even with this realisation I am not compelled to do anything. I don't have it in me. Our survival instinct has been compromised for some reason. It may be that the tide is just too strong and the assumption that any action will be futile is too powerful. If you fall into the river above Niagra Falls and swim strongly upstream to escape your fate, you still go over the falls regardless of how strong you swim.
I urge everyone to park their cars on your cities streets and freeways at the most strategic point, turn the engine off and walk away. The worlds governments need to be brought to a stand still. The funds need to be cut off from the criminals that are running the place. A few poeple is all it takes to bring an entire city to a stand still, a few hundred or even few thousand would be impossible for any authority to counter. Day after day after day until commerce is no longer possible. And all you will have done is violate the local parking laws.

Well the fuel reportedly is already underground, likely more than 50 feet, and we still have a problem.

Not a slurry wall, or sheet pile wall, or soldier pile wall, but a secant pile wall.
Bridges and tunnels are completely different.
The goal with a drainage trench and cement barrier would be on the uphill side, to diverty groundwater from running through the site.
The spent fuel ponds only need to be kept cool until they are emptied and the waste is moved off-site.
As for cooling the cores, who knows. If the cores are boring through granite, is groundwater even cooling them at all anyways?
At the very least, restricting groundwater and only applying water as needed and desired, could help slow/prevent the buildings from being undermined, to keep them intact enough, long enough, to get the spent fuel ponds emptied before they completely collapse.

The technique of freezing the soil while building tunnels is not new or experimental. It was used on a very large scale on the Big Dig in Boston a few years ago. Japan needs to fly in a few of those engineers to show them how it was done.

And now, I will bite. This is what I did not want to publish, but I know it has to be true. Call this creative journalism, because I never called Netanyahu, but here is the most rational conclusion I can draw, based on all info gathered so far including the original not faked seismic data.
I honestly believe Japan is being held a nuclear hostage. It all makes sense.
1. Japan offers to enrich uranium for Israel's GREAT SATAN, Iran
2. Immediately, Israel sets up front companies masquerading as security companies, and one of them succeeds in getting a security contract at a Japanese nuclear facility. 4 months later the Dimona Dozen shows up, and under the cover of a security contract gets unlimited access to the heart of Fukushima. They plant the virus, install real cameras outside the facility, and functional poorly disguised nuke cameras inside the facility. In addition to this, they install an unauthorized data connection to allow control of all the guts of the facility via the virus. (they admitted to this connection, as discussed later on this page)
3. After installing Stuxnet and the nukes they scram
4. Israel waits for one of the many natural quakes in Japan to provide cover for a tsunami bomb, and they already have it at the bottom of the Japan trench. VLF communications are established with the bomb to penetrate the water. David in Dimona gets seismic reading from Japan. 6.67 in progress, BOOM. (new evidence shows the quake most likely was not natural)
Tsunami comes in, swamps stuxnet infected power plant, direct video feed from legitimate cameras security company installed gets to David via totally unauthorized channel, and David knows just when to cut the generators off. 6. David and his pals close ALL valves to the reactors via the remote data link they admitted to installing, and put them full throttle, to melt them down while the virus keeps control room readouts displaying false info, like nothing is going on even though the place is coming apart. After enough mayhem ensues to provide plausibility, they set off planted nukes and blow the place sky high.
And even if the quake was real, there are nukes that can reach an 8.4. Close enough. Though I have yet to work out the final details, I probably have enough to hang them because:
1. I got the real seismic data that proves beyond a doubt the quake is not what we were told and was in fact an inland 6.8, (calculated higher than the seismogram due to the triangulated true epicenter being a little higher) which would get noticed but not feared in quake ridden Japan.
2. Numerous referenced sources prove Stuxnet really was written by Israel
3. Japan really did offer to enrich Uranium for Iran, and Israel has been documented to have attempted to destroy the reactor in Iran, and probably did. Japan contributing to Iran's nuclear future would make them just as much an enemy to Israel as Iran. Israel would want them taken out.
4. It is documented that a team from Israel, with a history consisting only of working in Israeli defense, got unlimited access to a Japanese nuclear facility, which then went boom
5. Reactor 4 had been defueled and proven disassembled, and therefore no explosion there was possible. What should have happened at reactor 4, if anything at all? the fuel pools should have melted down and caught fire once the water boiled off from lack of recirculation AT Worst, and badly contaminated the containment structure, NOTHING ELSE. NO explosions, NOTHING ELSE. Reactor 4 is building 7, PERIOD. Why did an explosion there happen that was so severe it blew the outer containment walls (4 feet thick) and inner containment walls that were much thicker? Reactor 4 is reportedly now in danger of falling over. HOW?
6. The Japanese government is going along with the story of a scientifically proven false 9.0. There is a reason, and my guess is that Israel has made threats to wipe out Japanese coastal cities with additional tsunamis if the government of Japan speaks a word of what went on, there should be no reason for Japan to go along with this other than a continued threat.
Is it not interesting this "quake" reportedly happened at the bottom of the Japan trench, which would be perfect for hiding an atomic bomb blast?
Is the Department of Homeland Security trying to keep American industries (and nuclear facilities) in the dark about Stuxnet? After Fukushima fell victim to unwary operators, I would think such a conference would be a TOP priority here! The genie is out of the bottle. It is a fact that the writers of Stuxnet intend to use it. So cancelling a well researched conference about the vulnerabilities of the Siemens SCADA system to Stuxnet in the name of "keeping hackers from getting info" seems to me like an effort to keep the threat alive. Ignore the fluff at the beginning, and read the "About TakeDownCon" summary near the bottom so you know what they actually cancelled rather than settle for the no-panic fluff at the beginning. This is SERIOUS. I fear that by the time the Hacker Halted conference happens in October, the summer of disaster may have passed. And if it has not, I bet any discussion of Stuxnet at Hacker Halted will also be cancelled. Stuxnet is too good a toy for a very powerful group to let go of. Something is fishy here.
No evidence shows any tsunami or quake large enough to cause one is anything but natural.

Dr. Yasuhiro Iwamura of the Advanced Technology Research Center at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan recently presented groundbreaking successes at a conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His new process (see schematic below) uses a permeable palladium film to transmute radioactive cesium into praseodymium.
Praseodymium is a rare earth element used to produce high strength metal for aircraft engines; it is also used as a UV absorbing colorant in glass, and boosts the performance of neodymium in magnets, which are used in electric motors.
Does the Palladium film, in turn, become radioactive? Interesting concept, would be interesting to see independant review.

There was conspiracy theory going around (I never read the stuff. It was my first time. :) that the reason for the long delay for TEPCO to deal with the problem is Fukushima was the site of a secret Japanese nuclear bomb site, and they were trying to hide the evidence instead of cleaning up the radiation.
