Did Saddam Have WMDs After All: ISIS Overruns Iraq Chemical Weapons 'Mega-Facility'

Tyler Durden's picture

With all eyes firmly focused on what really matters (the oil refineries), The Telegraph reports that ISIS has over-run a Saddam Hussein-era chemical weapons (CW) complex. The al-Muhanna 'mega-facility', about 60 miles south of Baghdad, gives the jihadists access to disused stores of hundreds of tonnes of potentially deadly poisons including mustard gas and sarin. The US state department is 'concerned' but "do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value." However, as a former commander of Britain's chemical weapons regiment warned, "we have seen that ISIS has used chemicals in explosions in Iraq before and has carried out experiments in Syria." This is likely great for ISIS 2014 Annual Report; but, of course, the other awkward question is: does this mean Saddam did have WMDs (and ISIS found them) after all?

As The Telegraph reports, the jihadist group bringing terror to Iraq overran a Saddam Hussein chemical weapons complex on Thursday...

Isis invaded the al-Muthanna mega-facility 60 miles north of Baghdad in a rapid takeover that the US government said was a matter of concern.

The facility was notorious in the 1980s and 1990s as the locus of Saddam’s industrial scale efforts to develop a chemical weapons development programme.

During its peak in the late 1980s to early 1990s, Iraq produced bunkers full of chemical munitions.

A CIA report on the facility said that 150 tons of mustard were produced each year at the peak from 1983 and pilot-scale production of Sarin began in 1984.

Its most recent description of al-Muthanna in 2007 paints a disturbing picture of chemicals strewn throughout the area.

“Two wars, sanctions and UN oversight reduced Iraqi’s premier production facility to a stockpile of old damaged and contaminated chemical munitions (sealed in bunkers), a wasteland full of destroyed chemical munitions, razed structures, and unusable war-ravaged facilities,” it said.

“Some of the bunkers contained large quantities of unfilled chemical munitions, conventional munitions, one-ton shipping containers, old disabled production equipment and other hazardous industrial chemicals.”

Britain has previously acknowledgeded that the nature of the material contained in the two bunkers would make the destruction process difficult and technically challenging.

Should we be worried?

US officials revealed that the group had occupied the sprawling site which has two bunkers encased in a concrete seal. Much of the sarin is believed to be redundant.
“We remain concerned about the seizure of any military site by the [Isis],” Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman, said. “We do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to safely move the materials.

...

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commander of Britain’s chemical weapons regiment, said that al-Muthanna has large stores of weaponized and bulk mustard gas and sarin, most of which has been put beyond ready use in concrete stores.

It is doubtful that Isis have the expertise to use a fully functioning chemical munition but there are materials on site that could be used in an improvised explosive device,” he told the Telegraph.

“We have seen that Isis has used chemicals in explosions in Iraq before and has carried out experiments in Syria.”

One US official told the Wall Street Journal yesterday that Isis fighters could be contaminated by the chemicals at the site.

“The only people who would likely be harmed by these chemical materials would be the people who tried to use or move them,” the military officer said.

This asset growth is likely great for ISIS 2014 Annual Report...

Well, I had a whole thing about Uday & Qusay being the bastard prodigy of a psycho but at the end of the day, we can't be the worlds policeman, nor should we want to be.

These are things that people have to rise above and kill for (yes, kill) on their own, in order to gain their own freedom. If you come and "give them freedom" (or anything else) they have no way of associating the act with the cost in the third parties sacrifice for them. It becomes expected that someone else will do it for them.

What freedom & liberty means to me is a very hard thing to explain and relate to people on a host of levels.

But its right there, I think ;-)

The Iraqis actually provided the CIA with effectiveness reports when they used the US munitions against the Iranians in the 1980s. Sometimes they were quite effective, other times there was a 50-50 chance the Iraqis got dosed.

I call total BS on this story in general. How could there STILL be chemical weapons 15 years later? Especially after we didn't find any during the war? And why the hell would anyone leave them stockpiled there? This sounds like one of those "We better go to war quick to keep the people's mind off the shitty job we've done the last six years!, stories.

By CBSNewsAPJuly 5, 2008, 10:20 PM U.S. Secretly Takes Yellowcake From Iraq

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program - a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" - the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment - was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.

Wait a minute

Assad. The ruler of Syria is a very bad man.

He used chemical weapons on his subjects.

We supported the rebels who opposed Assad.

But wait the rebels apparently have United to form ISIS

the Islamic state of greater Syria. Which includes northern Iraq. And ISSA. is attacking our forces in Iraq

So our rebels are fighting US.

Northern Iraq is the ancient ASSYRIA . Whose capital was Nineva. Assyria conquered Babylonia(1) Egypt,Israel and anyone else that was around. They took the ten "lost" tribes of Israel away to captivity .Never to be heard of since. They were very bad people.

Southern Iraq is the ancient Babylonia.

Babylonia (2) lead by Nebudcadnezzer. Conquered Assyria. So they had to be very bad people too.

They captured the last 2 tribes of Israel

The Medes and Persians. Conquered Babylonia.

They freed the last 2 tribes of Israel.

The Persians were defeated by the Spartans a City in Greece. And they, the Persians, were eventually conquered by  Alexander the Great who came from Macedonia.

My point is the sooner we get Greece and Bulgaria involved fighting the ISSA.  The better off we will be.

And, no, John McCain does not have the solution.

did you not read the ZH disclaimer?

You should assume that at all times we are so totally just talking our book it would shock and awe you like the unexpected, early-morning arrival of a cluster of BGM-109C Tomahawks (were you a believer in the importance of "optics" that is).

...

We've always wondered this: Why would you want to read about a position so uncompelling that the author doesn't have the stones to put their money where their keyboard is?  Even if you elected to read such material for entertainment value (what else is there anymore?) why on earth would you ever consider it "more credible."

The reality is, critical readers should read analytic posts and the rest of Zero Hedge with the blanket assumption that the author is totally "conflicted."  (Phrased more logically, that the author stands to benefit from being right- imagine that).

...

If you still get something out of our writing with the assumption that we are invested in our position and stand to gain personally from you believing us, well, we've done our job.  If not, then our being "unconflicted" isn't going to change the fact that we have a weak argument or poorly reasoned prose.  At least, if you're not one of the "optics" idiots.

The Neocons are shameless.

We occupied Iraq for many years and "found nothing". Then two weeks after the ISIS incursion...all of a sudden...EUREKA???

Then the press expects the public to buy into this crock of shit?

Then the press responds, "Oh we did know."

But they failed to report it, widespread, and kept the public ignorant???

The unfortunate truth is that they will buy into this bullshit because they lack the ability to think critically.

No. 'Americans' usually remove their propaganda when they think they have reached a point of no return.

'Americans' love to report that they would have acted otherwise if they had known otherwise.
Stuff like what they call "white guilt" is part of that fantasy.

'Americans' revealed some time ago they knew or at least had the biggest doubts on the responsibles for the chemical attacks.

Telling it allows 'americans' to assert their domination.

It takes 'americans' to think that Putin push to get Syria (the 'friend' to Russia) to disarm is a splendid move.

The situation was that parties around the table knew that Syria's government was very unlikely to commit the chemical attacks. Yet Putin, through brilliance of mind, managed to cripple his syrian 'friend' by getting the Syrian government to disarm weaponry they did not use.
Putin managed to get Syria punished for nothing and gave 'americans' leverage on Syria as Putin led Syria to commit themselves to destroy their chemical arsenal. Any failure with compliance to execute the obligations is being used by 'americans' as a way to pressure Syria.

The best part: 'americans' nearly immediately after the agreement, revealed that the Syrian government was probably not involved.

Point of no return reached, they no longer needed to maintain their propaganda, they asserted their domination on Syria as both sides know now the punishment came out of the blue.

'Americans' have the seat they love so much: the bully with the illusion of justification.
All provided by Putin, that mastermind.

It's been some time now Putin has been doing the 'american' work.

That is probably why it takes an 'american' to tell that Putin is a smart chessplayer.
Guy has been working for them for a long time now.

HE DID NOT.

If you ever watch Football the vanquished team USES their Timeouts. As many coaches have said...You can't use them once the game is over.

If the US were being invaded and we did not use our Nuke Strike capabilities then that is TRAITOROUS. The Military Officers in charge should be shot if they refused to use them.

Saddam and his army was NO DIFFERENT. Their country was under invasion. It would have been TRAITOROUS to have not used any means possible to repel an invasion force. The Iraqis are also human. Their leaders were also PSYCHOPATHIC MONSTERS, as OUR LEADERS ARE.

They'd have used them, pal.

And fuck Tony Blair. A good friend of mine is a very senior lawyer and was one of the panel of top legal experts called upon by Bliar to advise on the legality of war, and who told him squarely it was illegal. As a result, he had to lean on the Attorney-General to provide a supportive opinion (itself very flawed legally and caveated). The whole 45 minutes debacle and the death of Dr Kelly ensued to ensure war. Even now, the eminences-gris are trying to hamstring  the Chilcot enquiry (which is in any event deliberately very limited in ambit) by preventing disclosure/publication of Blair's correspondence with Dubya.

ISIL found nothing.

True. Something can not be found if everyone has been aware of its location since the 1980s.

The article does not read anywhere that 'americans' did not know the site.

In fact it reads the opposite. CIA actually had annual production figures from the site in the 1980s. CIA advisors probably directed operation of the place back then when the mad man from the desert Saddam Hussein was still a staunchest US partner.

It also tells the British said destruction of the site would be difficult and challenging (read too expensive to justify). So it was concretized and left as someone else's problem.

ISIS invaded and took over a toxic waste dump. Sounds like the story line for a new Troma film: Toxic Jihadi Avenger.

If indeed, this site had anything that could resemble with WMDs, 'americans' would have revealed that info a long time ago to justify their previous invasion.

That is undeniably true. Not even 'americans' can deny it without vigorous exertions. Those 'mobile chemical labs' ring a bell?

Next: ISIL has taken over Hussein's former personal palace which is known to be the HQ from where he pulled all the strings.

Obama foreign policy.

1. Backed the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt while the Egyptian people firmly reject the radical group.

2. Removed Libyan leader Qaddafi under the guise of the Arab Spring which led to eventually Benghazi and likely the transfer of Libyan arms to Syrian Al Qaeda in a CIA operation.

3. Opposes Syrian dictator Assad and supports the Al Qaeda and ISIS.

4. Opposes intervening in Iraq militarily which undoubtedly gives ISIS free reign.

I believe in nearly every case the US and the Obama Administration is supporting the wrong side. I just wonder what this will eventually lead to ...

Inspected by UN, transformed into a CW agent destruction facility.

https://www.cia.gov/library/reports/general-reports-1/iraq_wmd_2004/chap...

Two damaged bunkers were sealed, deemed too unsafe to enter.  Other facilities repeatedly scavenged/looted. Brit Ministry of Defense was supposedly training Iraqi's to dispose of the remnants in 2012

https://www.dstl.gov.uk/downloads/Legacy%20Chemical%20Weapons.pdf

The Chemical Weapons Convention, which Iraq joined in 2009, requires that although the material is unusable and does not pose a significant security risk, it must be disposed of. The nature of the material contained in the two bunkers will make the destruction process difficult and technically challenging.

Does anyone have any idea of the ISIS numbers? (It doesn't appear so.) Geography was never my strong point but northern Iraq looks

like quite a large place. It's doesn't seem to add up that they could achieve such territorial gains so quickly without numbers in the tens

of thousands rather than the low thousands.

I would suspect that over the course of the last week or so they've had thousands of new recruits join their cause for a variety of

reasons. (Everyone wants to be on the winning side, Sunni political/religious grievances, when the highlight of your day is a bowl

of rice war is a step up, not down, for young men, strong religious beliefs in an afterlife mean you are less likely to avoid activities

that could result in your death, etc.)

Also, thinking about it now, no-one Western looking wants to get anywhere near these nutcases because they'll be executed

on the spot so no-one has any accurate intellegence as to what the fuck is going on at ground level until the sky is full of

reconnaissance drones.

In summary then, I think I've answered my own question.
