Did Saddam Have WMDs After All: ISIS Overruns Iraq Chemical Weapons 'Mega-Facility'

Tyler Durden's picture

With all eyes firmly focused on what really matters (the oil refineries), The Telegraph reports that ISIS has over-run a Saddam Hussein-era chemical weapons (CW) complex. The al-Muhanna 'mega-facility', about 60 miles south of Baghdad, gives the jihadists access to disused stores of hundreds of tonnes of potentially deadly poisons including mustard gas and sarin. The US state department is 'concerned' but "do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value." However, as a former commander of Britain's chemical weapons regiment warned, "we have seen that ISIS has used chemicals in explosions in Iraq before and has carried out experiments in Syria." This is likely great for ISIS 2014 Annual Report; but, of course, the other awkward question is: does this mean Saddam did have WMDs (and ISIS found them) after all?

As The Telegraph reports, the jihadist group bringing terror to Iraq overran a Saddam Hussein chemical weapons complex on Thursday...

Isis invaded the al-Muthanna mega-facility 60 miles north of Baghdad in a rapid takeover that the US government said was a matter of concern.

The facility was notorious in the 1980s and 1990s as the locus of Saddam’s industrial scale efforts to develop a chemical weapons development programme.

During its peak in the late 1980s to early 1990s, Iraq produced bunkers full of chemical munitions.

A CIA report on the facility said that 150 tons of mustard were produced each year at the peak from 1983 and pilot-scale production of Sarin began in 1984.

Its most recent description of al-Muthanna in 2007 paints a disturbing picture of chemicals strewn throughout the area.

“Two wars, sanctions and UN oversight reduced Iraqi’s premier production facility to a stockpile of old damaged and contaminated chemical munitions (sealed in bunkers), a wasteland full of destroyed chemical munitions, razed structures, and unusable war-ravaged facilities,” it said.

“Some of the bunkers contained large quantities of unfilled chemical munitions, conventional munitions, one-ton shipping containers, old disabled production equipment and other hazardous industrial chemicals.”

Britain has previously acknowledgeded that the nature of the material contained in the two bunkers would make the destruction process difficult and technically challenging.

Should we be worried?

US officials revealed that the group had occupied the sprawling site which has two bunkers encased in a concrete seal. Much of the sarin is believed to be redundant.
“We remain concerned about the seizure of any military site by the [Isis],” Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman, said. “We do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to safely move the materials.

...

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commander of Britain’s chemical weapons regiment, said that al-Muthanna has large stores of weaponized and bulk mustard gas and sarin, most of which has been put beyond ready use in concrete stores.

It is doubtful that Isis have the expertise to use a fully functioning chemical munition but there are materials on site that could be used in an improvised explosive device,” he told the Telegraph.

“We have seen that Isis has used chemicals in explosions in Iraq before and has carried out experiments in Syria.”

One US official told the Wall Street Journal yesterday that Isis fighters could be contaminated by the chemicals at the site.

“The only people who would likely be harmed by these chemical materials would be the people who tried to use or move them,” the military officer said.

This asset growth is likely great for ISIS 2014 Annual Report...

The chemical munitions and the associated facility (ies) is not just now being reported.  It was reported on several years ago, and if memory serves me (and it does), the response of the DemPerv party and their media Molls was that if was nothing but old munitions from an earlier era of Saddam's secular butchery.  Cheers to you Russophiles and Arab apologists.

PS:  Saddam held the UN Inspection team at bay for more than six months before even allowing them in country and then thwarted every attempt to conduct the inspections.  Who doesn't know that before the UN Resolution authorizing force against the Baathist Regime was implemented, that much of its most sensitive weaponry was secreted to Assad (Another Baathist Regime).  Hell, right up to the date of "shock and awe" Saddam even implored the Ayatollahs to take possession of its fighter jets. Iran rejected the offer. If memory serves me (and it does), eight months after the invasion, the 'crypto-Zio' forces discovered 20 or so buried Iraqi fighter jets.

Ya'll beginning to sound like bumper sticker intellects to which you feel sooo superior.  Weak and even a hint of your own particular tribal bleating.

Almost too good to be true if you wanted to put troops into the place.......

And if true how did they know to hit that complex and secondly it would mean the US had to have known weapons were there while the place was occupied.

And couple this with Syria gassing civilians again it like at first if your lie doesn't work double down on it the next round. Don't give these people too much credit.

This chem-war meme is being pushed out now because "they" are going to use gas in Shia areas in the coming weeks.

TPTB want a re-ignition of Iran-Iraq ('80-'88), which had limited chemical warfare.

The plan is to ramp up a Sunni chemical assault on Shia neighborhoods in Baghdad and otherwise get an Iranian incursion into Iraq.

Keep in mind that this facility is an hour south of Baghdad. Never mind the war-fighting capacity of these guys, think of the swiftness of their logistics to be this organized in their capacity to roam unimpeded across a region the size of the US New England+ and just within the last weeks.

It's not like they have satellite cover, JSTARS, or "advisers."

I cannot understand for a moment why the Bush administration didn't just plant chemical weapons or nukes in Iraq and then say "We found em - mission accomplished". Of all the lying, cheating and stealing US congress people undertake why the fuck did they not just plant the damned weapons. You see, all this talk of consipracy bullshit, of inside job this, inside job that, and something that would have been piss easy to pull off, WASN'T.

Does anyone see why I'm a bit skeptical of the whole 9/11 inside job theory. Fly a C-5 Galaxy load of chemical or biological weapons into Iraq, drive them to a warehouse, add a few bells and whistles like a laboratory, some caged rats and even some prison cells with dead, poisened  Iraq's and WALLAH, credible evidence for the attack on Iraq.

People are obsessed with concocting the most incredibly elaborate explanations and schemes for just about everything under the sun including HAARP induced earthquakes causing Fukushima when in fact the world is just slowly tending toward chaos and shit happens without some Lex Luther or Dr Evil type madman planning it all.

I sometimes think the world is actually slowly going insane. I was reading some bullshit last night about people seeing these flashing red, blue, green and yellow lights in the night sky and have somehow convinced themselves that the world is on the brink of an extraterrestial encounter. It seems like a mass delusion (beyond the religion thing) is taking hold. If you want a dose of absolute hysteria peruse beforeitsnews.com. Admittedly this site seems to be a evangelical christian based website so a hugh leveel of delusion is quite understandable.

For those who will down arrow me for the 9/11 skepticism just provide your explanation for why the Bush administration didn't plant the weapons in Iraq. And please don't say because they didn't feel like it or didn't think it was necessary.

Like I've said in other posts, it's within the realm of possibility that US authorities knew of the 9/11 plot and let it unfold, maybe in fact greased the wheels so it could. Under these circumstances it might also be possible that the WTC7 was imploded but ask yourself this. WHY ???????? If you wanted to destroy evidence of the investigation into the missing 2 trillion wouldn't it be easier to press the delete button on the files and the backups and use a shredder for the hard copies.

I do understand though the dilemma of building 7. No steel framed building in history has ever collapsed (so perfectly whats more) from fire. Maybe some crazy bastards did conccot and execute this. It's skeptics like you that allow the evil in plain sight to go unnoticed.  Open up your fucking eyes.  They don't lie.  Building 7 was clearly a controlled demolition.  There is no doubt about it.  It vaporizes in seconds and falls neatly and rapidly into its own footprint, just like you've seen dozens of times in videos of other controlled demolitions of buildings.  It wasn't hit by a plane.  And a fire can't do this.  So we can take that event as a FACT.

Now what does this FACT mean?  It means someone had to wire the building weeks in advance.  And what does that mean?  It means THERE WAS A FUCKING CONSPIRACY -- individuals reaching an agreement to engage in unlawful and criminal conduct.

Now, as to who did it and how, that remains to be investigated, because IT HAS NEVER BEEN INVESTIGATED.  But if you look at motive and opportunity, and the rest of the evidence that has been developed and written about extensively, there are answers if you're not afraid to learn the ugly and diabolical truth. There are some very evil people in this world who are highly motivated to hide the truth (so they don't end up in the electric chair), or would like to motivate people like you to do their dirty work, like fighting and dying for their causes, which usually involve their money or power. Wake the fuck up.  We don't need more sheeple.  We need more lions.  Lots of them.  People who are willing to fight for truth and justice.

First, just because a vocal segment of, well, okay, people thinks that Dubya was behind 911 doesn't mean there isn't controversy about 911. I, for one, would like to know why a difficult aerobatic maneuver was undertaken to crash into the very place where an investigation was underway to uncover a missing $2TN, in what one would think was the most heavily defended airspace in the U.S.

Mass delusion? When 90% of the fucktards in the world think that the 21st century started on January 1st, 2000, because they can't add 2000 to the year 1, that might just be a lapse in arithmetic. But when not only the media but the Queen of England goes along, is it delusion, or is it illusion?

The world isn't going insane, it is moving on, and the insanity is that the powers that be are trying to hold it back so they can continue running things.

I don't think history will be kind.

To me, the Iraq WMD fiasco is a simple case of a bunch of inept but gun-ho propagandists who ended up brainwashing themselves. Self-propagated brainwashing, if you were an alien watching from outer space you'd probably find it hilarious.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-18/china-s-yuan-to-start-direct-tr...

By clinching a deal allowing the direct exchange of the yuan for British pounds, the U.K. got the jump on European counterparts grappling to become a hub for the most-used currency in global trade after the U.S. dollar.

While four other nations had already signed such accords with China, the U.K.’s deal yesterday made it the first European country to do so. London has been competing with cities including Frankfurt to become Europe’s offshore yuan hub. Direct trading of the yuan-pound pair is scheduled to start today.

Bullshit!  If the Saddam had chem-weapons, the US would have made a huge deal out of it. If the US occupied the country and decided to keep them to play with later in, cough, syria, the US would have quietly removed them prior to hand-off with the new regime - that's the only plausible scenario.  But what's the benefit from doing it quietly???  This is fucking stupid.  They have them, bomb them, occupy them, then there's no evidence, then they have them again!!!!  Are you fucking crazy!?  They don't have shit. Chem weapons are as rare as rocking horse shit, because it doesn't exist.

A NBC bunker is not something to be trifled with, and necessitates a substantial EXPOSED structure, even if it's highly covert.  You don't just SURPRISE!  oh, we missed that shit... oops...  No fucking way.  Bullshit.  You need substantial ventilation and containment, and that's not something that is hidden from the fucking NRO or even the fucking US Army.  What a fucking line of shit.

So do any of you believe that there is anyone in the US Government that you will believe - about anything? This is like the Vietnam era talk about why we were there?

In conclusion radical Muslims killing other radical Muslims is a good thing - please do not stop it. "Radical" = no personal liberty, and no separation of church and state.

There is no reason for us to get involved. Besides, if the ISIL form a pseudo-state in between (or thereabouts) Syria and Irag many will join them - which is why weinvented nuclear weapons = trump chemical anyday.

So who out there argues that we should lose even one more GI in the name of not using our nukes to take care of these "radicals?"

The Iran-Iraq War (1980-88 / Chemical& Biological Weapons [WMD])         http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Iraq_War

"The Age of Deception" : 'Nuclear Diplomacy in Treacherous Times' c.2011  by Mohamed Elbaradei

Quotes & Excerpts pgs. 16[8], 27[19], 50-51, 65-71,118 and 211

"Iraq was known to have used chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War"

"Saddam had long been view as an asset of the U.S.,Europe, and the Arab States, who had encouraged, supported, and financed his 1980-88 war with Iran, as a way to contain the Iranian Revolution. This of cource led to Iran's distrust and resentment of the west, and is viewed by many as the genesis of the Iranian Nuclear Program, following Iraq's use of chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War."   *[Iran Contra & Ronnie's Ollie?]

"In early October 2002, before the vote on the final, reworked resolution, Hans Blix and I were invited to a meeting at the US State Deptartment. Colin Powell was our host. Condoleezza Rice, Paul Wolfowitz, and Lewis Libby [footnote 2] rounded out the group. I was just completing my first term as General Director of the IAEA. Blix had come out of retirement to become executive chairman of the successor organization to UNSCOM, UNMOVIC, which had been somewhat dormant since its creation because of the lack of access to Iraq. UNMOVIC would focus on chemical and biological weapons and missile technology.                                                          Rice even went so far as to suggest that the person manning intelligence in UNMOVIC should be an American. 'We trust our people,' she said. Blix balked, saying that a Canadian has been designated and would be in charge.                                                                       It was starting to feel like 1992 all over again."

"Chirac was astonishingly candid. 'You know why you don't get the information,' he declared. 'It is because they don't have any.'                                                         I explained, 'is that the focus on Iraq is not because of WMD's per se,but because Iraq is a Muslim and Arab country, and therefore is not allowed, like Israel, to have such weapons.' I echoed something Chirac had said: that the eagerness to take action on Iraq would not sell well in the face of doing nothing about the Israel-Palestinian conflict. I also mentioned the ctriicisms I had been hearing about the disparity in treatment between Iraq and North Korea.                                          It always seemed to be a one-way street, with the British acting as spokespersons or apologists for the US behavior.                                                                             With so little to make their case on the nuclear front--- other than the aluminum tubes allegations and the Niger Yellowcake fiasco--- many US officials nonetheless remained certain that Iraq had at least some chemical and biological weapons squirreled away.                                                                                                         Clearly, what Chirac had said was true: neither the United States nor other countries had much in the way of intelligence information to back their convictions about Iraq's development of WMD.                                                                     The The decision to go to war had already been taken in Washington. I had wanted him ([Blix] and I were a good team) to join me in requesting more time for the inspections to run their course, considering we had not found evidence of the existence of WMDs or any iminent threat, but he was unwilling to do so.                Also, Blix did not have seasoned technical advisers in chemical and biological issues or missile techology.                                                     In fairness to him (Blix?) and to UNMOVIC, it was easy for them, throughout the inspections, to reach clear verification conclusions because, despite past intelligence assertions to the contrary, the Iraqis had not kept accurate records of the chemical and biological weapons they had destroyed in the 1990s. Futhermore, Blix was not always supported with accurate data."

"Rafsanjani, whom I met at his palace ([6] the Palace of Mirrors, one of the shah's old palaces) and who seemed the savviest politician of the group, had spoken passionately: 'I have seen so many of our people killed with chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War. I cannot be the one advocating dialogue among civilization and at the same time developing nuclear weapons.' [cofidence deficit/ taqqiya?]"

"What do you really think--- is Iran trying to build a nuclear weapons program?'      My assessment is a gut feeling informed by historical context, First, elements of Iran's nuclear procurement and research programs began in the mid-1980s, in the middle of the Iran-Iraq War. Iran was at the time under dire threat from Iraq; more than one hundred thousand Iranians, including civilians, reportedly fell victim to Iraq's chemical weapons. Faced with this extreme sense of vulnerability, the Iranians might have originally intended to develope nuclear weapons. But at some point--- perhaps after the war had ended or in the mid-1990s, when records show abrupt adjustments to some of Iran's nuclear programs, or perhaps after the Agency began its investigations--- Iran may well have decided to limit its program to the nuclear fuel cycle, legitimately remaining a non-nuclear-weapon state party to the NPT.         In any case, my belief is that Iran has not revealed the whole truth about the beginning of its nuclear program. There might have been some military involvement in nuclear procurement and nuclear experiments. However, these skeletons in the closet are, in all probability, fairly insignificant; the body of evidence would otherwise be greater and harder to conceal."

End quotes

Ps. Iran quotes/excerpts on the final page explain how much Iran and Iraq have aligned since Saddam.

When I examine U.S. foreign policy, I always utimately come up against the simple question: incomptence or evil?  On the surface, launching a war in 2003 to stop Iraq from becoming a launching point of Islamic terror attacks with WMDs, and to see that country swarming with real Islamic terrorists who are aquiring real WMDs 10 years later appears to be the absolute height of incompetence. But then there is the "evil" argument that asks, "maybe this was the real plan all along??"

"An End to Al-Qaeda"  : Destroying Bin Laden's Jihad and Restoring America's Honor   c.2010  by Malcolm Nance

Quotes Pg49:  Part 1  "Crushed in in the Shadows" (In the absence of this popular support, the Islamic mujahed movement would be crushed in the shadows.-- Dr. Ayman Al-Zawahiri [    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayman_al-Zawahiri  ] )

"Syria becomes a gateway to instability in Iraq: Instead of seeking the cooperation of the Sryian government prior to the invasion of Iraq, America remained hostile to Syria, due to the perception that Syria is the principle client state of Hezbollah in Lebanon. This made Syria indifferent to extremist volunteers entering via Damascus. These volunteers provided the thousands of armed foreign fighters who infiltrated the border and joined al-Qaeda in Iraq, In addition, the Syrians allowed their Ba'athist Party peers from Saddam Hussein's regime to openly operate the armed resistance campaign from the Iraqi refugee-filled Damascus suburbs. The open pipeline, which could have been closed through diplomacy and cooperation, allowed suicide bombers and Iraqi extremists to flow in and out. The terrorists who plied these 'resistance routes' were directly responsible for thousands of deaths in Iraq."

"Turkey fights in Kurdish Northern Iraq: Kurdish extremist groups that operateed across the porous Turkish-Iraqi border find refuge in deep mountains. Without interference from the Hussein regime, they stepped up their cross-border infiltration and mounted combat operations into Turkey. In September 2004, Turkish forces warned Kurdish forces, then commenced combat operations against them. There are continuing clashes between this NATO member on the terrain of the newly liberated Iraqi Republic."

Begging the question:

If Saddam and the republican guard had access to chemical weapons and had the means to deploy them, why the fuck was Basra not a toxic smog cloud back in 2003?

IMHO it's more likely that the ISIS tools found a decrepit toxic waste dump.  I doubt that the Iraqis would have had the money or means to run an incineration or neutralisation facility, so the next best option for disposal would be to bury it under concrete or store it in a bunker.  I'm no chemist, but I know enough to realise that most CW have a limited 'shelf life' in which they can be used with efficacy.  It still remains toxic and you don't want the constituant chemicals leeching into the ground water or soil, so your only option is to use it before it expires, or store the waste.

If the report stated that ISIS had captured a fully functional industrial-scale laboratory, then I would be bleating along with the rest of the fuckwits.  As it stands though, this is just incendiary pro-war propoganda.

ex-Pentagon official Michael Ledeen:

Ledeen, however, is less frivolous. In The War Against the Terror Masters, he identifies the exact regimes America must destroy:

First and foremost, we must bring down the terror regimes, beginning with the Big Three: Iran, Iraq, and Syria. And then we have to come to grips with Saudi Arabia. … Once the tyrants in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia have been brought down, we will remain engaged. …We have to ensure the fulfillment of the democratic revolution. … Stability is an unworthy American mission, and a misleading concept to boot. We do not want stability in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and even Saudi Arabia; we want things to change. The real issue is not whether, but how to destabilize.

quoted excerpt above from Whose War? in 2003.

Also look up A "Clean Break: A New Strategy For Securing The Realm(1996)"  brought to you by the same people who four years later hatched The Project For A New American Century and it's RAD(Rebuilding America's Defenses) document which required a "new New Pearl Harbor" to get the backing and support of the American people. They weren't really concerned with defending America, but more with securing the realm.

Btw "the realm" does not refer to the United States. And here we are today...hell yeah there was a fucking plan, you betcha!
