Russia Reignites The Proxy War: Putin Offers "Complete Support" To Iraq Prime Minister Scorned By Obama

Tyler Durden's picture

Two days ago, before it was formalized that the US tacitly, if not explicitly, now supports the removal of the Iraqi Prime Minister whom it itself had helped elect, we summarized the geopolitical tensions and "national interests" in Iraq, which is shaping up to be a proxy war that makes last year's Syrian escapade pale by comparison, as follows:

The situation in Iraq, already a jumble of domestic sectarian violence, is now pitting virtually all major (and regional) international players against each other as well. There is:

  • US which tacitly supports Iran intervention in the region, but may have suddenly cooled in its support of Maliki despite sending naval and troop forces in the country after partially evacuating its embassy
  • Saudi Arabia which wants to remain friendly with the US but is antagonistic to the Iraq regime, is potentially aiding the ISIS forces, and clearly refuses to allow Iran entrance in Iraq
  • Iran, which has suddenly become America's best friend in the region, which is willing to enter Iraq and protect its holy sites
  • Syria, whose president is sitting back amused at last year's failed campaign by the US to remove him from power, and whose army is at a stalemate with the local US-armed and funded rebels
  • Qatar, which is supporting the Syrian rebels, but so far has not made its stance clear on Iraq. Like Saudi, it too may be indirectly backing ISIS
  • Jordan, which is a close friend the US, and which may have hosted ISIS in a secret base on its territory with the US instructing the jihadist group according to an unconfirmed report
  • Turkey, which is on constant alert to Kurdish escalation across the border, the same Kurds which now have far more leverage courtesy of ISIS crushing the Iraq army in the north and handing over Kurds access to oil fields in the north.
  • And of course Russia: because while Putin clearly benefits from rising crude prices, it is his Lukoil that is developing (and investing vast amounts of money in) the vast Iraqi West Qurna-2 oil field. It is not clear how he would feel about it falling into ISIS hands.

It was the bolded text that was of biggest interest because as we noted the next day, when discussing the next steps for ISIS, we said that "One wonders how long until the mercenary force finds its latest major backer, because for all the western, US-led intervention, both Russia and China are oddly missing from the scene. We expect that to change soon."

Because clearly one can't have a global proxy war without China, and certainly without Russia.

Well, we said we expected Russia's conspicuous absence to "change soon", and so it did: within just 24 hours. Because apparently all Putin was waiting for was for Obama to pick sides (i.e., not Maliki) before the Russian leader made it clear whom he sides with. US, helpfully obliged yesterday morning when we also reported that "US Slams Its Former Iraq Puppet: "The Maliki Government, Candidly, Has Got To Go"."

So what does Putin - who as a reminder is heavily invested in Iraq' massive West Qurna-2 oil field via Lukoil - do? Why announce his undying support for Maliki, of course, and as AP reported, the former KGB spy offered Iraqi premier Nuri al-Maliki Russia's total backing for the fight against fighters who have swept across the country, as well as his full support for the embattled prime minister.

More:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken by phone to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, expressing Moscow’s support for his action against the militant offensive.

The Kremlin said in a statement that al-Maliki informed Putin on Friday about his government’s steps to combat the “terrorist groups in the north of the country.” It added that the insurgency threatens security of the entire region.

Putin confirmed Russia’s “full support for the Iraqi government’s action to quickly free the territory of the republic from terrorists,” the Kremlin said, adding that Putin and al-Maliki also discussed bilateral cooperation.

Putin’s expression of support for the embattled Iraqi prime minister comes as al-Maliki’s rivals have mounted a campaign to force him out of office, with some angling for support from Western backers and regional heavyweights.

And just like in Syria from 2012 to 2013, the chessboard is once again set, with a regional middle-east conflict, this time in Iraq, merely serving as the proxy staging ground in which the Iraqi PM, once an obedient US puppet but now an enemy of Saudi Arabia and thus the US, "simply has to go" in the words of Dianne Feinstein, has suddenly become the fulcrum issue behind yet another soon to escalate conflict between Russia and the US.

One thing is certain: the more the US (and Saudi Arabia, and Qatar) pushes for Maliki's ouster, the more involved Russia will become with its offers of support and bilateral cooperation. And if the Syrian fiasco (for John Kerry) is any indication, Russia is about to expand its "national interest" sphere of influence by one more country.

With all of the events related to energy the last few years, this all seems to be a slow strategic setting up of the major oil producers to pull the plug on the petrodollar. Think about the events:

BP oil rig explosion

Fukashima

Ukraine

Russia/China gas deal

The attempted takedown of Assad in Syria

Libya/Egypt

Keystone Pipeline delayed forcing Canada to sell to China

I'm sure there are other events that don't specifically come to mind but my point is that this all seems to be setting up to something specific and not just a synchronicity of random happenings.  Perhaps it's a move toward natural gas on a larger scale.  Just a thought.

Read Enenews and skf-blogspot. You'll know everything worth knowing about Fukushima.

No government wants anyone to know the full horror of the end of all life on this planet within 100 years. The North Pacific is just about completely dead, death rates are climbing far beyond normal in Japan and North America, and we're only a little over three years into it. It will continue to pump lethal death for another five billion years, and it's only four NPP's. Soon more will fail, which will also be impossible to contain, and the nuclear dominos start to fall from there.

Hug your loved ones, we are entering the final Dark Ages.

I think we have two sets of games going on, with each of the two sides trying to outpace and outflank (front-run) the other:

1. The Petro-Dollar Empire and its bullied, bribed or blackmailed 'Friends' are trying to create a regional or world war, to prevent the collapse of the Dollar.  And with it, their wealth and lifestyle.  Proxies are being used as bait for Crisis, Escalation and War.

2. The Rebels (Russia,China, Iran...) are trying to crash the Dollar, rather than get sucked into War.  Proxies are being used as means to buy time.

Both sides are sophisticated enough to know that massive PR must be used to neutralize/freeze the Moderates and the Populace, lest they get sucked into one camp or the other.

p.s. IMO this situation/story does NOT have a Happy Ending, until a full Financial Reset has been reached.  Even then, it will take some time afterwards for things to stabilize and re-grow.

And ISIS!  Seriously where the fuck did they come from? Brand new toyota trucks, new arms, and ten thousand strong.  Who funded them, us, saudis, tehran?  This seems like using proxies to achieve what most people would be outraged by and that is to just give up all of our interests and any allies we ever had in that region.

I guess this is what is called flexibilty. Russia can only benefit from this by using Iran and Syrial to help garner control of the regions major oil supply to Europe and the US. The USA cannot keep pace with many players at hand working against them and a president who is willing to let that happen.  And he wants that to happen.

Israel to Get First Batch of Oil from Disputed Kurdish Pipeline Delivery signals growing trade between Israel, Kurdistan; comes despite US opposition to Kurdish oil exports.

SCF Altai tanker approaches Ashkelon port Reuters

Israel will receive its first delivery of oil from a disputed pipeline in Kurdistan, in a sign of growing relations between the Jewish state and the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq.

On Friday the SCF Altai tanker approached the city of Ashkelon in southern Israel, and is scheduled to dock sometime Saturday.

The oil delivery is from the KRG's new independent pipeline which bypasses the central Iraqi government by running directly to the Turkish port of Ceyhan, much to the chagrin of Baghdad's embattled government. The delivery to Israel comes at a crucial time for the KRG, which is looking to protect itself from the deteriorating situation in Iraq by being more independent economically.

The independent export of oil to Israel comes shortly after Kurdish Peshmerga forces - the KRG's independent army - seized the oil-rich town of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, along with swathes of territory near the Turkish border, as Iraqi troops abandoned their posts in response to the advance of Sunni Muslim rebels including the radical Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). KRG officials have already openly entertained the option of redirecting the flow of oil from Kirkuk through the Ceyhan pipeline, particularly after the regular Kirkuk pipeline was sabotaged after Kurdish forces took control of the city.

The United States opposes the KRG's oil pipeline, but Israeli officials told Reuters Jerusalem is keen to build relations with the Kurds, both in order to counter the growing influence of Iran and to generally broaden its options for energy supplies.

Unlike the US and many European countries, Israel does not buy oil from Iraq, and is therefore unruffled by the Iraqi government's staunch opposition to the Ceyhan pipeline.

Israel will not be Jewish by the time any gas transit facilities are built. They're dying out due to DU exposure. Roughly no more children after 2020.

The problem is, the Israelis are not the part of the tribe calling the shots. They're not even part of the 'real' tribe. They don't live in Israel and aren't breathing/eating DU. But they did make a shit tonne of money selling it to the Israelis, knowing full well what would happen.

A small group of 'neo-Jews' hates the real Jews with a passion, and are winning the war.

Iraq already has somebody taking care of the Iraqi government:

"When a senior Iraqi intelligence official traveled to Tehran in the summer of 2007 to meet with the Iranian leadership, he quickly figured out who was in charge of Iran’s policy toward its neighbor to the west.

It was not the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It was Qassim Suleimani, the shadowy commander of Iran’s paramilitary Quds Force, who calmly explained that he was the “sole authority for Iranian actions in Iraq,” according to an account the Iraqi official later provided to American officials in Baghdad."

Putin can then come and give extreme unction in an Orthodox mass : I buried those who buried Soviet Russia; in the rubble of Baghdad's renaissance singing my Euroasian song.

They're almost out of oil. I mean, what the hell do they bring to the table, other than family insulting Putin?

What happens when a country wants to switch sides, and no one wants them. SA is about as useless as tits on a halal boar. The US doesn't need them to run AQ. SA is only a conduit, and the world is running out of the need for middlemen. The manufacturers are taking control of final delivery.

If Russia/China take them onboard, it's going to be at a very painful price.

How do you know what America wants?  From a pure realpolitik Obama et al are being entirely consistent.  They wish to control oil and the dollar.  If that means spinning the mid east like a top, so be it, if it means having Russia engaging across multiple engagements, so be it.

I am not endorsing it, or judging the success, but to think there is no strategy here is simply naive.

Personally I am against it all as America is simply a puppet of the Euro elites, and have been since WWI.

Putin is being entirely concsistent with his foreign policy - just as China is.  They offer help to legitimate governments without making demands on them.  Legitimate governments deal with legitimate governmerts.  The internal affiars of those governments are the business of that country, not Russia.  The US could do with that lesson.

They operate differently but still unethically, the countries they acquire resources from may not prosper as a nation of people, but the dictators and vested interests sure do based on the deals made which in turn funds their continued dictatorship despite domestic opposition.

Just saying its not that clear cut, many ordinary people in Africa for example are shafted by the powers of the east and west. In so saying the USA, Canada, Australia etc could have managed very well without participating in the destruction of countless nations using the propaganda cry of "democracy" to disguise their true motives.

But when did our nations really have truly independent political systems? How many black swans have been played on us all to con us into the right-to-interfere and invade mentality? There is a lot of old history in this game being played today - e.g. Boar War to Afghanistan and beyond.

If our school texts followed the real money in our history lessons combined with historical gun boat "free-trade" and central banker ownership plus resource rights ownership we'd all see this quite differently, but then that would stop the masses of every nation deciding to participate in many of the wars we've had.

You might be surprised just how many strings are being pulled from outside the USA that have been using the USA's useful sociopaths as puppets for a very long time. He's had plenty of negative experiences from radical Muslims - enough to know they are better dead.

ISIS is like a loose cannon. Frankly there aren't that many of them in Iraq, so wiping them out is certainly within Russia's capabilities.
