"To My Fellow Filthy Rich Americans: Wake Up, People. The Pitchforks Are Coming"

Tyler Durden's picture

Excerpted from Nick Hanauer's OpEd in Politico (read more here),

Memo: From Nick Hanauer

To: My Fellow Zillionaires

You probably don’t know me, but like you I am one of those .01%ers, a proud and unapologetic capitalist. I have founded, co-founded and funded more than 30 companies across a range of industries—from itsy-bitsy ones like the night club I started in my 20s to giant ones like Amazon.com, for which I was the first nonfamily investor.

I tell you all this to demonstrate that in many ways I’m no different from you. Like you, I have a broad perspective on business and capitalism. And also like you, I have been rewarded obscenely for my success, with a life that the other 99.99 percent of Americans can’t even imagine.

...

But let’s speak frankly to each other. I’m not the smartest guy you’ve ever met, or the hardest-working. I was a mediocre student. I’m not technical at all—I can’t write a word of code. What sets me apart, I think, is a tolerance for risk and an intuition about what will happen in the future. Seeing where things are headed is the essence of entrepreneurship. And what do I see in our future now?

I see pitchforks.

At the same time that people like you and me are thriving beyond the dreams of any plutocrats in history, the rest of the country—the 99.99 percent—is lagging far behind. The divide between the haves and have-nots is getting worse really, really fast. In 1980, the top 1 percent controlled about 8 percent of U.S. national income. The bottom 50 percent shared about 18 percent. Today the top 1 percent share about 20 percent; the bottom 50 percent, just 12 percent.

But the problem isn’t that we have inequality. Some inequality is intrinsic to any high-functioning capitalist economy. The problem is that inequality is at historically high levels and getting worse every day. Our country is rapidly becoming less a capitalist society and more a feudal society. Unless our policies change dramatically, the middle class will disappear, and we will be back to late 18th-century France. Before the revolution.

And so I have a message for my fellow filthy rich, for all of us who live in our gated bubble worlds: Wake up, people. It won’t last.

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.

Many of us think we’re special because “this is America.” We think we’re immune to the same forces that started the Arab Spring—or the French and Russian revolutions, for that matter. I know you fellow .01%ers tend to dismiss this kind of argument; I’ve had many of you tell me to my face I’m completely bonkers. And yes, I know there are many of you who are convinced that because you saw a poor kid with an iPhone that one time, inequality is a fiction.

Here’s what I say to you: You’re living in a dream world. What everyone wants to believe is that when things reach a tipping point and go from being merely crappy for the masses to dangerous and socially destabilizing, that we’re somehow going to know about that shift ahead of time. Any student of history knows that’s not the way it happens. Revolutions, like bankruptcies, come gradually, and then suddenly. One day, somebody sets himself on fire, then thousands of people are in the streets, and before you know it, the country is burning. And then there’s no time for us to get to the airport and jump on our Gulfstream Vs and fly to New Zealand. That’s the way it always happens. If inequality keeps rising as it has been, eventually it will happen. We will not be able to predict when, and it will be terrible—for everybody. But especially for us.

Or that the pitchforks are the solution and that is why he named them specifically.

There truly are no solutions, because the only true solution is a ctrl/alt/del, and that's not going to happen any time soon because pitchforks, or even AK47s M16's or whatever ain't going to do shit against a tank, or worst, an invisible drone that can shoot a Hellfire missile up your ass. Unless some sort of high ranking military coup takes place (not holding my breath) nothing is going to change while the government controls the indus/military complex, and indus/military complex control the government. A truly evil Ying Yang.

There's a solution, but it involves destroying the banking elite who currently rule this nation state and many others.  That isn't going to happen though without a lot of blood being shed.

If money = power, why do we give it away so easily?

Disengage the thives' economy on all non-essential functions.

Not at all bloodlust, but I don't see the historical global aristocracy giving up reign over our lives without a fight to the death. Not after thousands of years (you think this is a recent event, even the past century?). History hath shown that you can't "put them in their place". They just slither into the shadows and immediately start plotting again, only with more legacy knowledge gained from each time they're driven into the shadows and allowed to remain there. You're talking about 100K people globally, at most, that need a good trial and good public hanging to save a humanity of 70,000 times greater. Would you try and hang every 70,000th person to save the others ? Particiularly if the former were guilty of horrendous crimes against humanity?

So what is he suggesting? Run for their jets now? The health of a system is preserved by competition. When you kill everything with roundup, the most immediate response is weeds. The corruption that has been enabled by the government and power elite has killed healthy competition and all that is left are those willing to feed off the flesh of the dead and dying.

People must believe in justice and equal opportunity for all if they are to expend effort to achieve. The mega rich could all go out and commit suicide today and it wouldn't change the structure of our economy. Until the rules are reinstated and justice confirmed, the economy will only degrade.

He says he is not particularly smart, yet he obviously thinks he is smarter than most, so where does that leave us?

Wealth inequality is not a problem of people with money, it is a symptom. The problem is not government dictating too low of minimum wage, it is that government dictates much of anything at all. There will always be inequality and as he suggests that will never change, but the disparity demonstrates that the rules are broken. Yes, wealth can influence or buy legislation that benefits them. Its not the wealth, it is the power that is afforded to people who can be bought. People always have and always will be susceptible to bribery and the lust for power.

We should work to ensure our system is not vulnerable to this kind of corruption rather than focus on killing the symptoms of it. What the super wealthy have is of no concern to me. The only thing important is how they got it and how that effects my ability to prosper. It is the system that is crushing us, not rich people.

Read this and see if any of it sounds familiar...the movement away from the small family-owned shops and trade guilds into the consolidated and aggregated environment that we find ourselves in now.

Raise the minimum wage and ensure a higher first rung on the ladder for the young, the uneducated, the untrained and unskilled and those with checkered work histories and create gpvernment induced subsitution of capital for labor effects, yeah that'll help.

Why stop there Nick? Since raising the minimum wage won't hurt businesses, let's just make it $25/hour?

Seriously, is this his only solution? What a dolt.

How about we get the hands of government out of our pockets so that everyone has more money to spend?

How about we reduce the size of government by 50%?

Eliminate crony capitalism, get money out of politics, term limits, pass a fair tax/flat tax, stop printing money, end the FED, return to a gold standard, stop fighting endless wars...

I have at least 100 solutions to promote economic growth before raising "the minimum wage"...one of which is eliminating the minimum wage!

People must believe in justice and equal opportunity for all

Exactly.  And this doesnt mean that there must be equality of outcome.  It means that there are rules and they apply equally to all.  That is manifestly not the case today.  I am not holding my breath though.  Politicians have now seen that the only sure way to get votes is to pay for them.  Appealing to principal in a country where the notion of principle has become a quaint anachronism is the way to lose.  Too many have come to prosper by cheating, after which everyone understands that if you play by the rules you are a chump.  So there is a regress.  It only ends I fear with a painful reset, though that could be pretty far off in time.

In any event, if this guys solution is more government rather than less, then he can be one of the first hoisted on the end of the fork.

Perhaps, but the Russian revolution tightened a few sphincters among the well-to-do...In the years following we got the 1930's labor movement, and social programs designed to pacify the masses.

If TSHTF again, I'm sure we'll see the same thing replayed as the wealthy, faced with the very real possibility of losing it all, decide it is better to let some of it go and calm the crowds before everything gets out of hand.

We may even see very wealthy folks DEMANDING "we" do something for all those poor folks. Trying to switch sides when they see their team is losing.

The existence of the Fed is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for the way things are today.  You also have to take into account regulatory capture (revolving doors with regulators and K Street,) and limitations on how much cheap energy can be produced.  We are on a decline anyway, and the Fed and the corruption is just making it worse, and We, The People have allowed it to come to this.  May we live in interesting times.  We deserve it.

I don't think he addresses the how anywhere. First there needs to be admission that things NEED to change. The how is the vehicle that gets us there. The vehicle must be the right one (like look how crappy QE turned out) but first the acknowledgement of the problem needs to happen.

Somehow, and here is a my gripe of have towards posters who advocate violence against the "banksters" I think that everyone of us who accepts a "highly" paid in fiat jobs, takes a mortgage and credit card and has a life that is vastly better than royalty of a 100 or so years ago (most probably everyone who reads and posts here) is actually part of the ponzi.  In other words the banking system is part of a vast machine powered by oil that gives a lifestyle that could only be dreamed about by the majority a mere hundred or so years ago.

I don't necessarily have a problem with people inheriting wealth as long as the original means to acquire and then keep it were legal, and without special privileges.  And that the inheritance was subject to rules that apply to all of us.  I have a problem when someone presents himself as a self-made man and isn't, like this guy.

The crash was supposed to bring cheaper everything from homes to farms. It was suppposed to free all the trapped capital in innefficient banks and transfer it to successful banks. This is natural stimulus that always works very well. But No. We didn't get that. We puffed up the values of banks, stocks, farms, and homes using printed money. Walking dead banks and companies have trapped capital with no plan to redeploy for efficient reasons. Profit motive has been replaced by government pork contracts. R & D is nowhere near as profitable as political bribes. Production has been replaced by finanical chicanery and government-subsized tax avoidance strategies that only reward overseas production. All of this has replaced paychecks with welfare checks for 50 million working age adults. This all started with TARP and the banks whining that they need to pay bonus in 2008 to their "talent".

It's just so simple: We reward the wrong things. What happened to us?

I got up real early this am and took my dog (shephard mix) out east to some beach I found and let her swim for a few hours. After washing her off and heading back home I stopped in Southampton and grabbed a cup of coffee and was walking right through town (tried to link google maps, did not work)

There were people sitting there and on a bench was some older(ish) wealthly looking broad with her labradoodle piece of shit animal leashed to the bench. As I walk past this rat thing charges at my dog and my dog moved towards me in time and the rat dog just kept going nuts. The broad stands up and says "keep your dog away from my dog" and then picks up her dog and says "that's okay we did not like that dog anyway". I stood there and then I just said loudly "This is why the world hates you fucking people". I then started walking back with my dog towards her (my dog does not have a mean bone in her body but is lean and mean looking) and I started yelling at my dog "Attack! Attack!", The people sitting in their seats got up and scurried a few feet away and the woman started screaming for someone to help. Meanwhile my do just kept looking up at me like "what?"

I don't believe the pitchforks are coming but they can't come soon enough.

“Freedom! To fill people's mailboxes, eyes, ears and brains with commercial rubbish against their will, television programs that are impossible to watch with a sense of coherence. Freedom! What have we become. Come OT with me a sec.

The new proposed name of the formerly racially insensitive named "Washington Redskins". The Washington Mighty Labrododdles. Go get em.

In 20 years, PETA.Gov will have that struck down in a "ruling", no doubt.

Hell. It's not like they named the team "Drunk Blackjack Dealing Injuns"...that would be too close to the bone.

Note that the Irish take no issue with Fighting Irish. Yeah. We fight. We drink. We wear stupid outfits once a year. Kiss our trashy Mick asses if you don't like it. We are comfortable with that. Sorry about your detached retina and the wired jaw. Jameson's a motherfucker sometimes and so are stereotypes.
How's about renaming the Redskins the Washington "Skimming Beaks", "Turncoat Dual-Citizens" or "Bignosed Bankers". Think Feinstein and Schumer wouldn't get a skybox for that? Oy.
Interestingly enough the "Washington False Flaggers" and "Washington Homeland Shultzstaffels" work pretty good, too. Think of the smart uniforms these guys could have! Hell, the can wear the same ones they wear on entry team duty. Cheney and McCain would not miss a game and Linsey Graham can be a Cheerleader full time, she's had plenty of practice.

Pinto,

I suggest you ask a few more questions first, for example: why is he getting press and publishing? Two, how do you picture neo-feudalism? An aristocracy with titles, lands and serfs? Like his idea of city-states? Billionaires become lords and ladies?

What about commerce, law and private property? If we unfence the commons, how do we reward investment to recover resources and produce goods? If legal systems remain, how do we lock out the psychopaths?

Don't get me wrong, I like some of his ideas, but the one that worries me the most is this: waitng for the Algerian fruit seller. None of what he espouses requires a revolution or violence. From the ashes, we see rise the tyrants in new clothes.

Tere is a reason certain people get their ideas expressed. They are often catalysts or propagandist for something that starts out well and then is turned on its' head.

At 1% that means there are 3million of the "elite" in the USSA, not much of an elite really when nearly everybody will know a few of these guys.

Whereas 0.01% is 30,000 now we're talking much more of an elite.

i know it's a bit harder to say but let's stick to the 0.01%  there are not 3 million "elites"

Fri, 06/27/2014 - 13:40 | 4902894 NOTaREALmerican

Sure, but what's an "elite"?  The top 1% (or .01%) couldn't exist without the management class (say, the top 10%).   And the top 20% help the management class.    There's no "elite".   There's just the smarter-n-savvier people and the dumb-n-clueless, or the job creators and the lessor people,  or (perhaps) the predators and the prey.

The problem is that we've hit the end-of-game condition and nobody knows how to restart it.    All games have a winner (or winning group).   NOW what?

If envy is your motive, hell, just kill anyone who has more than you do.

If justice is your motive it is slow, messy, difficult, imprecise and just plain hard. You would actually have to show how each person harmed you. I suspect that envy is the real driving factor here. Castro just shot everyone. I saw this on television when I was 12.

Hitler just blamed 'all the jews'. Stalin killed the mechants and farmers.

"kill 'em all'" seems to be the preferred approach....just depends on what your murderous impulses dictate.

btw this is not aimed at tonyw....it is really for all those thoughtful folks who want guillotines.

In France all it took was a mob. Motive (and the 'crime' of the indiviidual no longer mattered. Often those who were cheering in the crowd found themselves on the sharp side of the blade shortly thereafter.

Remember, here in the USA even welfare recipients are mostly in the 1% if you consider the whole world.

South Africa decided no to kill the whole population (of whites and opposition blacks). Reconciliation can work too.

Mass arrests give the wrong kind of people too much power. Usually a sadist winds up in charge.

I strongly disagree with Nick.

How does Nick think people can get organized (on Faecesbook, Tw@tter etc) when every digital move we make is being monitored? Every text message is monitored, every email is monitored, everything we do or post on Faecesbook is monitored. Cell phones even track our movements. Should we go long on postal pigeons?

Ask the people in North Korea why they don't 'simply' grab a pichfork and rise up to the 0,000001% who run the country. Answer: they can't because they have been analogly and digitally neutered.

Nope, sorry Nick, I think we're already well past the point of no return: the 0,01%ers are firmly in control and I honestly do not forsee a pichfork uprising.

WE MUST NOT LOSE HOPE!!! THEN THEY HAVE TRULY WON. THE SYSTEM WILL COLLAPSE ON ITS OWN IF YOU SIMPLY LIMIT YOUR PARTICIPATION AND SPREAD THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT MONEY CREATED AS DEBT.

EVENTUALLY THE 0.01% WILL OVERSTEP THE MARK, AND 9/11 WASN'T ENOUGH BECAUSE TOO MANY PEOPLE WERE FOOLED BUT THE KNOWLEDGE IS SPREADING NOW AND THE NEXT FALSE FLAG WILL HAVE TO BE BIGGER AND MORE FAKE.

EVENTUALLY THEY WILL TRY AND GET FULL MOBILISATION TO CULL THE POPULACE OR THEY WILL DO IT BY ENGINEERED VIRUS...IF THEY TRY WORLD WAR I THINK TOO MANY WILL REFUSE TO FIGHT....VIRUS MAY BE OUR GREATEST THREAT AS I CAN SEE THEM EFFECTIVELY DENYING THAT THEY SYNTHESISED IT...

What a dipshit.  If he truly felt like inequality was such an issue, then he would necessarily have prospered under an immoral system, no?  Why then is he clamoring for tax changes without simply donating his own money to the treasury?  If his excess wealth is so damaging to the economy, then why not spend it on blow and hookers?  World class dipshit.

Forget the G6, buy a nice used 747 (plenty available), not as sexy, or fuel efficient, as the G6, but you renovate that sucker and you have yourself a flying mansion with all the comforts of home that can take you virtually anyplace on planet earth without refuelling.

It is not JUST the inequality, it is that the riches come mostly to the least deserving.

Even an otherwise innocent investor like this guy go on the suspect list in those circumstances, he's too right.

Well, things will go as they go, and the sooner the better.

I am curious. What would you be posting if there were no millionaires and billionaires, but people were still in the plight they are in? What if everyone was in poverty? Who would you be blaming then?

Thanks for the link, which is an interesting read.

FWIW there is in fact a difference between "Aryan" and "Nazi"; clearly, though, the word "Aryan" has acquired a certain darkness, due to its being embraced by the NSDAP and similar political organisations.

I hear that there is still quite a large number of Aryans around; Nazis, not so much.

yes, there is a difference between "nazi" and "aryan" - apologies for using a type of shorthand in my post.

all around the 'webs I'm seeing an  ongoing "re-branding" of "aryan" cultural desig-nations, which I find quite interesting,

Aryanism is a system of thought born in early-nineteenth-century Europe that divides mankind into different "races." It deems the Aryan race to be "superior," more creative and morally upright than "inferior" races. Those Semites, "Negroes," and others were believed to be characterized by vicious simplicity, cupidity, treacherousness, and an incapacity to grasp metaphysics. It all started soon after Sir William Jones discovered in 1786 that Sanskrit and Persian were related to Latin and Greek, within what later came to be called the Indo-European family of languages.

The term "Aryan" itself is a neologism coined by a French Orientalist of the era, Abraham-Hyacinthe Anquetil-Duperron. It is synonymous with "Indo-European," although the latter has a more geographic connotation. In a Zeitgeist where nations and national cultures were given shape, where myths of genealogy were particularly appealing to intellectuals, and where some were grappling with the moral dilemma of colonizing people in far-off lands, Jones's linguistic theory was swiftly manipulated into a racial one -- linguistic similarity was assumed to denote racial kinship.

Today, talk of the "Aryan race" in the West is restricted to white supremacist circles in North America and neo-Nazi militants in Europe. The very concept of "race," although it is still used in political discourses, especially in the United States, is scientifically bankrupt. Leading scientific associations assert that genetic variations between human groups are so gradual that drawing lines is inevitably an arbitrary and subjective exercise.

little nudges to "historical definitions" all around us, from Hollywood to press & literature. . .everyone can choose what they believe is "true".

personally, I choose to understand history as a deliberately shaped concept of nationstates created to exploit humans, with nation-all boundaries shape-shifting when most profit-able, and wars the tool used to "explain" the new invisible lines. . .
