Las Vegas Is "Screwed"; The Water Situation "Is As Bad As You Can Imagine"
"It's just going to be screwed. And relatively quickly," warns Tim Barnett, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, telling The Telegraph, the situation in Las Vegas is "as bad as you can imagine". After a devastating, 14-year drought drained the reservoir that supplies 90% of the city’s water, the apparently endless supply of water is an illusion as Las Vegas population has soared. As Barnett ominously concludes, "unless it can find a way to get more water from somewhere, Las Vegas is out of business. Yet they’re still building, which is stupid."
As The Telegraph reports, as with many things in Sin City, the apparently endless supply of water is an illusion.
America’s most decadent destination has been engaged in a potentially catastrophic gamble with nature and now, 14 years into a devastating drought, it is on the verge of losing it all.
“The situation is as bad as you can imagine,” said Tim Barnett, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “It’s just going to be screwed. And relatively quickly. Unless it can find a way to get more water from somewhere Las Vegas is out of business. Yet they’re still building, which is stupid.”
Things are not good...
Las Vegas gets just four inches of rain in a good year, and in the first four months of 2014 there was just 0.31 of an inch.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority, which has the task of keeping the city from running dry, has described the effects of the drought as “every bit as serious as a Hurricane Katrina or a Superstorm Sandy”.
...
However, Las Vegas still uses 219 gallons of water per person per day, one of the highest figures in the US. In San Francisco the figure is just 49 gallons.
But they have a plan...
Lake Mead’s water level is currently at 1,087ft above sea level. There are two pipes, known as “straws”, that take water from it to Las Vegas.
The first extracts water at an elevation of 1,050ft and is likely to be sucking at air, rather than water, soon. The second straw is at 1,000ft.
Lake Mead is expected to fall another 20ft towards that critical point by the end of this year.
Beneath the ground a mammoth effort is already under way to complete a new, lower straw which will be able to draw the last of the water from the lake.
But it is a painfully slow process as a giant drill the size of two football pitches advances at a rate of one inch per day.
That rescue project is costing $817 million and is currently expected to be complete by late 2015, but it is not viewed as a long-term solution.
Las Vegas also wants to build a separate $15.5 billion pipeline that would pump 27 billion gallons of groundwater a year from an aquifer 260 miles away in rural Nevada.
But a judge has refused permission after environmentalists sued on the basis that it would adversely affect 5,500 acres of meadows, 33 miles of trout streams, and 130,000 acres of habitat used by sage grouse, mule deer, elk and pronghorn, an antelope-like creature that is endangered in the region. The court heard that 25 species of Great Basin springsnails would be pushed toward extinction.
But in the end, it's a fals promise...
“It’s a really dumb-headed proposition. It would provide a false sense of security that there’s plenty of water and it would delay the inevitable decisions that have to be taken about water conservation and restricting growth.
“The drought is like a slow spreading cancer across the desert. It’s not like a tornado or a tsunami, bang. The effects are playing out over decades. And as the water situation becomes more dire we are going to start having to talk about the removal of people (from Las Vegas).”
Mr Mrowka cited Lake Las Vegas, a mega-resort where stars including Celine Dion live, as one of the “most egregious examples” of wasting water.
And then there's this...
One proposal is for landlocked Nevada to pay billions of dollars to build solar-powered desalination plants in the Pacific off Mexico, taking Mexico’s share of Colorado River water in exchange.
But Mr Mrowka said: “The Colorado is essentially a dying river. Ultimately, Las Vegas and our civilisation in the American South West is going to disappear, like the Indians did before us.”

And here is the effect of a new Maunder minimum:

Zzzzz....
Get back to us when RSS and UAH global satellite temps are above the means of your climate model predictions (not below the 95% CI) for a year or two OK?
(Hint: It's never going to happen)
And once again if you can (which you can't) please explain the record antarctic sea ice and the multiyear trend up and how this is caused by global warming...
As to the effects of a Maunder minimum your fellow Warmist and solar physicist Mike Lockwood would disagree...
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn24512-solar-activity-heads-for-low...
The Maunder Minimum coincided with the worst European winters of the little ice age, a period lasting centuries when several regions around the globe experienced unusual cooling. Tree ring studies suggest it cooled the northern hemisphere by up to 0.4 °C.
But Lockwood says we should not expect a new grand minimum to bring on a new little ice age. Human-induced global warming, he says, is already a more importantTemperatures have risen by 0.85 °C since 1880, with more expected, according to the most recent assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
There may still be noticeable consequences. For instance, long term cold winters in the UK are common when solar activity is low. And less solar activity can slow the jet stream, triggering a suite of interlinked extreme weather events like the Russian heatwave of 2010, and the devastating floods in Pakistan that same year.
DID YOU READ THAT FLAKEY? IT"S NOT GLOBAL WARMING CAUSING THE POLAR VORTEX EVENTS ITS THE FUCKING SUN!!!
Thank you, Zero.
Never ceases to amaze me, the egocentricity of humanity.
We did it and can fix it, while all the time it's a cosmic phenomenon.
Did you actaully read what you posted?
So, if the sun is going into a low, why the fuck does the temperature keep rising?

BTW, this is the recent TSI data:

It has seen many more than that...
I suggest you root around here for a clue:

Let us know when you find one...
"Sorry to hear about NOAA correcting the record and calling July 1936 the warmist July in the U.S. ever..."
DON'T YOU KNOW? THE SCIENCE IS SETTLED!!!! Now stop being a terrorist, think of the children, and pay your CO2 tax for breathing.
Lookie! A brand new Hedgetard on the block!
FlakFRAU...Woman!!! Stop being a cunt.
When you start being honest about your gender then maybe people may start to begin to take you seriously....and respectfully.
FYI...People actually will take women seriously. (I happen to love women, one in particular, a lot. I am passionate about women. )
But they will not take the dishonest seriously. And when you cannot be honest about the small things, AS YOUR GENDER, then it is pretty damned well assured that you will not be honest about the large things.
WTF does his or her gender have to do with it. Most of the posters don't disclose their gender; why should the women specifically?
You really get into calling women cunts and bitches on this board; you've done it many, many times. Yeah, you really love women, my ass.
Men who constantly call women cunts and bitches do not love women, they hate women. You are a misogynist. Go back and compare how many times you have done that, with how many times other male posters do - you are not the norm in any way.
Look, if you hate women because you really prefer guys, it is okay. Just don't take it out on women.
Her Gender has EVERYTHING to do with what she posts, Karen.
Come on...She is a poser? You come to the rescue of a poser? LMAO. What does that say about YOUR HONESTY???
(I am actually happy that you are not a poser.)
If one cannot be honest in small things then I cannot believe them to be honest in that which matters.
Gender is a small thing...
Honesty is what it is about.
Now I understand that you are just a girl trying to protect another little girl. And that is what I expect from girls...NOT WOMEN.
Or you can act as a woman and allow her to defend herself?
YOUR CHOICE.
Either way...,Stop being a bitch!!!
Note...That is the very first time that I have ever called you a bitch. And I have NOT EVER called any other woman on this site a cunt or a bitch...before FlakFRAU...EVER.
You have become the second one. Do you feel honored?
No, it is not the first time you have called me a bitch. At one point months ago I cited a study to Miffed, re the differential between how often women leave husbands who have cancer, vs. how often men leave wives who have cancer. You didn't debate the study's content or source; you simply called me a bitch.
You call women posters bitches and cunts all the time. Other male posters on this site do not. You have real issues.
If Flak were male, surrounded by women who were calling him a bastard, I would also point out that gender was irrelevant. This is a debate about climate change, but it brings out mental problems in posters like you who can't address actual issues, when their brains are all excited by the idea that a female is around. I take it you didn't have any sisters; you seem to find women really alien.
Stop whinig bitch. Be honored. You are the second bitch.
Wow Karen, I had forgotten about that. That really proves you are a woman because men forget those things and women tend to hold slights against themselves forever and bring them up againand again.
I don't remember the interaction well but I don't think tom called you a bitch about the content of the article you cited. I believe it was about our interaction. In any case, you once again prove to me you are very afraid of words. I have been called many things here. I have been threatened with bodily harm by someone. It is not pleasant but I refuse to be intimidated or cowed by anyone. Your reaction shows you are offended. By doing so, you show weakness. Weakness is rarely respected.
Miffed;-)
In Britain they call everybody cunts. Haven't you read inthemix? Every other word is cunt when he is on a rant. You seem to enjoy labeling men misogynists for any infraction you deem inappropriate. How can you do so when you don't even know the man personally? You only see superficially and never depth. You are the queen of PC and I understand why you say you can barely stand living with your husband. I feel sorry for him and you. Alway angry, always accusatory and labeling. Never seeking understanding or empathy.
Miffed;-)
If you think science is ever 'settled' you know nothing of the scientific method.
To quote Richard Fenman (one of the true great men of science, IMHO), regarding this....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMDTcMD6pOw
It's only a minute, worth a look.
PLEASE...Spare me. Research today isn't about finding truth. It is about getting grant $$$. Many "scientists" are happy to play along with the man-made climate change scheme. Believe me, I have the credentials to make this statement.
You are absolutely correct. That's how funding (from government owned by banksters) distorts science.
I thought of putting that into my comment but decided to keep it short, sorry and all that.
Funding, however, does not change the facts.
Believe me, I don't make comments I don't have the credentials to make.
So did we land on the moon or not?
Oh, and what credentials would those be?
BTW, you get public funding by doing good research that is respected by your peers. Nobody is playing along with anything...
Corporate research is where you are supposed to get a certain answer....
Chemistry and Astronomy at uni - with a side of geology.
Followed by 40 years of serious thought and research.
As for corporate/government research... he who pays the piper calls the tune.
I guess you lack credentials in the reading comprehension department.
Maybe you should work on that.
The question was not directed at you...
Follow the thread...
PhD in the hard sciences. Published author. I played around in environmental science for a bit too. I read many peer-reviewed global warming papers. They were mostly garbage.
you mean like how 36 of the 40 IPCC carbon emission scenarios wildly overestimate how much carbon we have to burn?
http://gaia.pge.utexas.edu/papers/EnergyCoalPaperPublished.pdf
Well then lets hope Patzek is correct and the climate sensitivity is on the low side of the accepted range...
And "wildly" is pushing it...
can you pont me to a paper describing the state of the art climate simulation
The code is always "proprietary" and the data used in never publicly archived for review.
It's a religion.
Are you making shit up again?
You clearly know how to find one on your own. But here ya go

Signup for the e-mails, if you like...
"The base-case global coal production forecast in this paper is
compared with forty Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
(IPCC) scenarios in the SRES Report [10]."
I can't tell if that indicates the scenarios were from AR4. If so, then perhaps the AR5 scenarios better reflect the issues raised in this paper?
----------------
Let's keep in mind that coal is only one source of CO2 and that CO2 is only one GHG...
---------------
What about the third alternative, runaway AGW leading to the sixth mass-extinction event> Should "prudent" policy makers consider THAT? second alternative so much more far reaching ya boohoo. Or are you all in on smearing the IPCC?
mmm mass extinction. for the record the ongoing mass extinction started 200k years ago and is caused entirely by homo sapiens displacing nearly all terrestrial and many marine megafauna ecological niches. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaternary_extinction_event#mediaviewer/Fil...
climate change had pretty much nothing to do with it. animals can very easily change their size over a few generations to adapt to mildly different climates.
i hope you're aware of the phanerozoic co2 record http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phanerozoic_Carbon_Dioxide.png
PS i would be very careful about attacking patzek. he is confused about some things like entropy but is otherwise pretty good
Your comment above on Patzek is very misleading in that it is integrated amount of carbon in the atmosphere that drives things, not the rate. At last I looked there are plenty of gigatonnes of C02 yet to be liberated...
Unless you think that something happening 250 years from now instead 125 is some kind of palliative...
There are bunch of ecologists that would beg to differ with you...
Mass extinctions are driven by climate change...
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=climate+change+and+mass+extinction
and they are OBVIOUSLY wrong. the last interglacial is the ONLY one with a mass extinction. animals do not simply disappear. there is always a need for megaherbivores and apex predators whatever the climate is like. if a species dies, another will take its place and eat the food it used to eat. WE are the megaherbivores. WE are the apex predators.
we have obviously displaced the tigers and buffalo and wolves and orangutans almost within living memory. and when we abandom someplace like chernobyl it immediately becomes a sanctuary teeming with wildlife previously thought to be locally extinct, radiation be damned.
integrate the curves in patzek figure 9 if it suits your fancy. there is plenty less co2 to be liberated than the ipcc thinks.
i have trouble reading longwinded texts and i couldnt find any equations in your climate model above. i thought climate models were numerical simulations but might be mistaken??
They are indeed....Did you find the publications page? Look on the left...
You might enjoy the recent TED talk by GISS director G. Schmidt

The aftermath of the last interglacial is still playing out, 15,000 years is blink of the eye compared the time scales of past mass extinctions like the Permian...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction_event
Step 1) take semi-spherical stainless steel bowl. 2) add"caused entirely" and "pretty much nothing", assorted greens, some academic shields, and pepper with warnings. 3) toss it and serve.
I don't have too much trouble reading long-winded texts but the math 'n stuff, and the warnings about posting "author's copy" does confuse me so...
Oh, please do on, which hard science?
Well, as with any field there are some papers that are more important than others...
like most women you are full of avoidance bullshit excuses. single mom? strong empowered woman? he ditched you right?
I think that's a "right"...
Just curious, dogbreath, asshole, do you attribute Fonestar's moronity to his maleness? No, you don't.
So why do you hate women? Single guy? weak dis-empowered dude? she ditched you, right?
Too funny. It figures you would show up. This broad on her harley called me Asshole once when I wouldn't move my 4X from an unmarked parking spot. She said it was hers yet she could park that hog anywhere. Entitled bitch complained to the building manager yet rides a harley.
Fonestar was banned and didn't accumulate nearly the downvotes that the Flakzuki has. Fonestar was funny(grudgingly) once in a while and wasn't nearly so insulting which is probably due to his being a male. Flak seems to be getting the pussy pass and she's never funny but almost always insulting. I can't believe I defended Fonedouche. Flakzuki is a big girl and can stand up for her self and own her own shit so fuck you cunt. Fight club = only two people to a fight.
Elvis has left the building honey.
I don't hate. I sit back and watch you sleep in your own bed - so tell us a joke.
Fight club is only two people in a fight??? As far as I can see, this is everyone against Flak. Pussy pass my ass, this is just a chance for the misogynists to be abusive; no-one abuses anyone for being male here; I've never seen it. Being male is just "normal," right? Nothing to even notice.
I don't have any idea what one entitled Harley-driving jerk signifies, male or female - you think Geithner and Blankfein and Zuckerburg and Holder and Paulson and (gee, 99 percent of the financial industry parasites are male) aren't "entitled"? Last I checked they were male.
I didn't know that Fonestar was banned. Well, I wouldn't have banned him (but I would have liked a way to block his posts).
Actually, yes, Flak (if female) IS a big girl. I am really impressed by her persistance. So, I downvote her because I don't agree with her; I don't care if she's female (but the fact seems really exciting to you and Tall Tom).
I am not sleeping in my own bed; I have to wake up my husband in an hour so we can take the dog out.
What is the difference between a one-winged bird and a two-winged bird? It is a matter of a pinion.
Hahahaha take a midol
See, you can't reason. No counterargument, just a gender-based insult.
you called me a mysoginist first = gender based arguement so you are full of evasive bullshit. Bite me
Here is your original claim, dogbreath (directed at Flak):
"like most women you are full of avoidance bullshit excuses. single mom? strong empowered woman? he ditched you right?"
Looks to me like you started the gender-based argument.
Look, I'm sorry that have you and Tall Tom have issues with women; it's kind of pathetic to see. Trying to get the attention of women on the thread, by posting anti-woman tripe; it's kind of obvious. I suppose that Flak has the right approach, which is to just ignore it. I'll try to do that in the future. I am so glad that I am married to a guy who is smart, sane, and likes women.
So you found another blue pil liberal to share the rent with. Like most women you make excusee for Flak because of some team woman solidarity BS. What you've done is the same as her. Avoidant bullshit excuses.
You are a pathetic piece of shit that has nothing to offer...
The world would be a much better place if you learned how to suck yourself off....
and what do you have to offer darling............................................................crickets
Just so you know, I am not a woman...
But they are clearly misogynist assholes....
Trying to insult me that way is all they have to offer as a counter argument...
Very sad really...
you sure talk like one, your fa............forget it
You Flakzuki are the most insulting poster here so quit your whineing and eat it
Hardly, I have nothing on some people here....
I think you are delusional but it would be best if you sought professional help
"corporate/government research"
that is the problem in this modern everything is for sale including academia world
You know nothing about academia then if you say that...
i dare you to say "chicago school of economics" without regretting having said that.
Actaully, you are correct, I should have qualified that my statement applied to basic research in the sciences...
Economics is merely the continuation of ideology by other means....
And there are a lot of whores in the Econ dept...
TEL, DDT, Agent Orange... the OVERT corruption of hard science in the interests of big business, political patronage, or national security is nothing new, and neither is the imperative of having grant applications approved (now and forever) if one desires to maintain their residence in the ivory towers.
"BTW, you get public funding by doing good research that is respected by your peers."
That statement is just dripping with irony.
And yours is dripping with Hedgetardiness...
I figured that would be over your head...
Hardly...
I smell government shill. Of course government sponsored research is designed to produce a particular outcome. And most basic science and medical research is government sponsored. It's why the annual NIH budget is so critical to lab testing companies.
Flak, you are truly the most caustic, pompous ass on ZH.
Jealous, eh?
Flaktard..
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery....
My mother remembers that summer and she was just a little kid.
It doesn't seem like anyone in LV is paying free-market prices for their water.
You're an idiot. The free market lets bad ideas like Las Vegas fail.
The contrary approach is what has made Las Vegas a much bigger disaster than it ever needed to be. How large would the population be if there were no welfare propping up an unproductive population. Let's not forget any tax incentives that have been thrown at various resort/entertainment corporations in order to entice them to build their next great thing on the strip.
So yeah, a free market would probably have given us a much smaller but more easily sustainable Las Vegas, and a much better off one at that. Oh well, keep on believing that crap they pay you to fling at walls.
Vegas was never, and will never be sustainable.
The product of the Mafia with the US government's blind eye turned. (There's a big clue regarding US Gov & The Mob in there, if you choose to look)
As long as it's making lots o' money, somehow the water will get there.
Even Barona Casino in Lakeside, California had a water shortage problem.
They just trucked it in by tanker.
Well, they attempted to steal it from a local reservoir and got spanked. Now they have pissed off a few locals when they built the casino and their wells mysteriously went dry after being fine for years.
A casino in a desert is never sustainable whether in Las Vegas or San Diego.
Miffed;-)
What is even more crazy is that many locals in San Diego do not even understand that they live on, or near, a Desert Beach.
This place is not Tropical.
The problem is that when the spigot is turned, water always comes out. There is no conception where that water came from. 95% of San Diegans live on water not native. I am in the 5%. So if the Colorado River flow becomes a trickle, there will be quite a bevy of unhappy people that will not be mollified by TV any longer.
Miffed;-)
Those up north and in the central valley seriously wish that the south would start building some de-sal plants because the state and feds are stealing the rest of the state blind.. er dry.
One of my kin is in the ag biz in the central valley and the stories about the allotments are astounding.
That promised for ag purposes decades ago has been just disappeared and shipped south for thirsty voters.
Parts of the CV are going medieval depression era Dust Bowl dry
And regardless of most people's lack of love, affection, inclusiveness and appreciation of diversity with respect to us here in the Great People's Republic of Milk, Honey and Other Folks Money, we do feed a goodly proportion of the entire US ....
No water, no food, bitchez.
It's misuse of the resource out here in CA
The paleo doesn't look good. The last century of increasing rainfall has been an anomaly historically. The agricultural importance can not be overstated and while aquifer irrigation is working for now for most crops eventually it won't.
Another bad omen for the future.
Fascinating read down this thread Zero and everyone (even Flak). It is kind of ironic that Flak can take the most Flak on anyone here on Zero H.
Even from ZeroHead.
That said, what if all this IS a simulation?
In the Matrix, wet or dry was just a state of mind.
ori
I am impressed by Flak's persistence. I don't agree with him/her, but the persistence is commendable, since I do not think that she/he is a government plant or troll.
Her persistence is that of a warthog. It is not commendable but it is actually ridiculous. I believe her to be a masochist of sorts.
She is using her "science" propaganda for the Statist objective of raising tax revenues for the US Government. That is ridiculous and any support which you give her is supporting her propaganda.
That is her agenda.
Are you double minded?
Just curious...has Flak actually advocated for a carbon tax? 'Cause you can believe that climate change is a thing and also think that the carbon tax is just another evil greed sucking scheme of the oligarchs.
Cap n' Trade is a scam...
I favour a revenue neutral Carbon tax....
I live in the foothills and work in Stockton. I know many farmers/ranchers from working in the valley, and all of them seem to be hurting in one way or another. This damn well better be the last year of the extreme drought conditions, or there won't be many of these people left. I won't be around to find out; in another 6-12 months, I'll be off to Oregon.
Oh wow! Another californian living in Oregon. Gee, whoda thunk it?
yeah, the Barona Casino drew so much water from the aquifer that the neighboring homes and ranches saw their wells dry up.

There will always be oil too. Two hundred years from now if you want a quart of oil, you will be able to get it. the free market will provide.

Power shortage? Just put in more outlets! Problem solved!!!
But...Didn't Vegas get the Memo?

Free water is a HUMAN RIGHT!!!
What a mindfuck for those people it will be when there is simply no more water and there is no one left to blame.
They will make excuses.
"Man is not a rational animal - Man is a rationalizing animal." -- R. Heinlein, I think.
I picture some asshole screaming about his rights as he's dying of thirst because nobody ever explained to him the difference between rights and privileges.
It'll be explained to everybody in no uncertain terms soon enough.
Why do I feel an urge to read Dune again?
When do I get to be the new Arab, selling barrels of water from Puget Sound where the rain is increasing?
I've been dying to customize my Rolls
I've gone off on this permaculture thing before...but it really is true. We're just idiot land tennants and have destroyed the way the earth actually absorbs, collects and spreads water. Bill Mollison, that crazy Australian who started the permaculture thing has toured around the world and seen all sorts of wacky ideas that work . Just digging any kind of catch pond or swale will caputre any amount of rain and make a huge huge difference. My favorite was a guy who made a rolling drum with big spikes on it and rolled it in the desert. After a year, the path had a huge amount of growth and creature just from the 1 foot indents grabbing the precious rain.
Desert is a pretty dry place Davey, doesnt it catch any rain that falls already, doesnt need additonal holes, and most deserts are in depressions to begin with like Death Valley, except maybe the high deserts, but even there the water doesnt really make it off the plateaus...
It is indeed but most high desert has been further screwed by, once again, our mass grazing and modern agriculture and high living. Permaculture techniques DO involve making alterations, but just like investments, there are smart ones and dumb ones. You watch and listen carefully and follow what works.
Check out a youtube by geoff Lawton called "Greening the Desert." A lot is possible and can be repaired quickly...if we're not stupid
big 'if' - unfortunately history proves that humans take the dumb and stupid path every time.....
if you have even a 1% chance of total annihilation and destruction (say from man made climate change) - and that can be limited by action on your part you're dumb for not taking that action. Yet most people will be content to do nothing - or argue that 1% possibility is false (even as it grows to 99%).
Glad I'm much closer to the end of my life than the beginning. Our kids are screwed. Not sure I would have had any if I realized just how stupid we are as a species. Things will be hitting the fan and falling apart. Gov is clearly preparing - to defend ITSELF, not take care of the populace.
So the artesian aquifer I hit in the 90's is my retirement! I should sell the PMs I have left and get in on some Vegas gambling and hookers... while they're still there.
But we ARE stupid! It is a key ingredient of modern society. Stupid AND corrupt.
I'm a big fan of Lawton. He's done some amazing things and produced incredible results.
I've incorporated several of his ideas on my farm and am satisfied with the results. It works.
Can it feed the world? Not sure. Can it feed my family? Absolutely.
I'll take care of my tribe and let vegas figure out it's own solutions.....
Yes Seattle has excess water. Nightime water. It glows.
Right on Davey! Range-pitting has been around, increasing forage production, since before anyone coined the term permaculture. But its good to see folks actually doing it. But don't you dare take any virgin PNW water to Las Vegas - we do sell our water you know, after being mixed with barley and hops and allowed to ferment. LV's problem isn't its lack of adequate supply its that it consumes 219 gallons per day per person! That number is simply outrageous. Almost 30 years ago now, Denver had a consumption rate of around 50 gpd-per person during the winter dormant season, and around 150 gpd-per person during the summer growing season. All of that additional water was to grow food for lawn mowers (i.e. grass). Its insane to grow grass in the desert. I have to imagine that saner heads in LV are working to constrain consumption, because - there is no alternative - or at least not on anyone who actually owns a home in LV would like to contemplate. This is The Tragedy of the Commons writ large.
well said.
energy consumption per person is another great leveller. We have got to start playing the game smarter before the board burns up
Actually, if the US sees it's energy consumption over the past 100 years, in comparison to the rest of the world, all of you, regardless of where you live etc., need to go on self-imposed austerity diets.
It's a fractal tell that 300,000 American's die of obesity every year, as mentioned in the other article below.
But the entitlement mind-set runs deep.....
A lot of Zionist Joo developers and casino owners in Vegas... Expect a surge in terrorism insurance and the inevitable false flag to be blamed on Moozlims.

at least we're not stupid enough to deify a dead Jew on a stick.
damn you pagans are dumb.
Yea, slitting chicken throats and sucking on circumcised baby dicks are such rich traditions.
You still have the lead when it comes to international terrorism and central banking usury... so good job.
So when your ancestors threw out their own native culture for a dumb down, paganized, proletarianized version of another peoples daughter religion that deified one of those people, did they do it because they had the wisdom to realize that they were culturally pieces of shit and somebody else's watered-down version was better than their inherent culture? Or
With a too stupid to realize that they were throwing up their native culture for somebody else's dumb down paganized , proletarianized daughter religion
You know, most of the (non-Jewish) Americans who care about and support Israel are ardent Christians. It is my strong impression that Israel would not fare very well without their support. The contempt you just expressed, if well publicized, could be extremely destructive of Israel. Well, I guess I can infer that you don't care about the future wellbeing of Israeli Jews. I can't say I'm impressed; if I knew of Christians who were in a tough spot, I would avoid saying things that would make their supporters hate them.
BTW, do you really think that Judaism sprang up out of nothing? It is a daughter faith too; I suggest you read up on the history of the region.
The Jews are the enemies of the Gospel. If only the Christians will read the book they profess to believe in???
ROMANS 11:25-32
New International Version (NIV)
All Israel Will Be Saved25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26 and in this way[a] all Israel will be saved. As it is written:
“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this is[b] my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”[c]
28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[d] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.
So when your ancestors threw out their own native culture for a dumb down, paganized, proletarianized version of another peoples daughter religion that deified one of those people, did they do it because they had the wisdom to realize that they were culturally pieces of shit and somebody else's watered-down version was better than their inherent culture? While he's at it he could print a few more of them long straws.

Fallout, Las Vegas, bitchez
Living in Las Vegas, everyone knew it was a gamble.
Thanks for cluing me in that Flakmeister was actually FlakFRAU...a woman
Without your insult, when you called her a cunt, I would not have known.
But sHe lives in New York, what a surprise.
I am surprised. My bet would have been the Haight-Ashburry section of San Francisco.
You know what they call them types of women whom pose as a man. Bull Dyke is the appropriate term.
Time for Randall Flagg to show up. And Trashcan Man to take care of Las Vegas once and for all.

If you have a problem... if no one else can help... and if you can find them... maybe you can hire... hmmm...maybe not.
Easy to see where the fear pumping comes from. Fucking fucktard British.
"The Telegraph" LOL!!! Shitmag...
Sent a giant dildo out to shadow Putins battle group.
Well, I was in Vegas last year and it's pretty clear actually.
At hooverdam, the turbines are nearly out of operation because of the low water levels.
And to be honest... When you need to have a constant waterspray when sitting outside on a teras drinking a liter bong of party tequilla with crushed ice... In the desert...
I found it a amazing city! But like the article says, the Belagio fountains.. That's a lake! Hpw much evaporates over there?
A city with open door airco for miles and miles?
And once outside, my sneakers where melting on the asphalt!
And once you're in your hotel, you take cold showers 1 hour in a row.
But the city does rock :)
I'm going back there for sure
But sometimes I wonder how people over there would react if they could see how green it is over here. It's beautifull but I could never live in a desert.
And everything is cardboard, plaster and plastic. 5 years and everything would be gone without maintenance.
But what was more weird is that when we rented a buggy to go in the desert, about every 20 minutes we would see a trailor in the midle of those deserts where people where living... How do they get their water?
There's the $1,000,000 question. What will LV do when the water falls below the turbine intakes? No electricity. California doesn't have it, neither does Arizona.
What happens when Las Vegas turns out the lights? Beyond the economic impact, it's going to be a US PR disaster.
I live in Las Vegas. 95% of our electricity comes from natural gas power plants. LA gets the Hoover Dam power.
In that case, they should just capture the emissions from the natural gas power plant, sequester the carbon dioxide, and recondense the water, global warming and drought both solved!
hey SD,
you purchase food grade barrels. i have the 15 gallon style:
http://www.survivalsolutions.com/store/waterbarrel15gallon.html
you just go into town and fill up. syphon it into your rig. viola!
You shouldn't ignore a message just because you don't like the guy delivering it.
What the fuck use is Vegas anyway, to any sane human being.
I know, there's not a lot of those about, and you sure as hell are not one of them.
"What the fuck use is Vegas"? I'll tell you what, without the hookers and blow, just think of the crash in the GDP!
That was, kinda, my point.
Maybe Las Vegas can give water "an offer it can't refuse".
Some one told me here that water was a right. I claimed it was a necessity but not a right. May be she can help Las Vegas with their problem.
Miffed;-)
Interesting encounters with arrogant others, eh?
Well unfortunately water is not a right. The arrogance of some people whom have never known starvation or drought continues to astonish me.
When people understand that Natural Laws trump those of Man's Laws then perhaps they realize humility...the hard way.
Nature ALWAYS wins.
The only way to benefit long term is to realise that and play nice.
The Whatever Water that comes to Vegas, stays in Vegas LOL
Water as a right was discussed in other articles - while Vegas is an oddity, often in 3rd world nations a lack of water can be traced to long term interferance from corporate entities and foreign agendas; even in 1st world nations water access is often interefered with. Corporatising water, introducing vultures into trading water 'rights' like another resource such as iron ore imposes artificial scarcity in some places for corporate gain and redirects investment away from small users. Air and water are necessary rights for humans to survive. But building in Vegas and creating massive water features for decoration??? That's stupidity perhaps they can do a deal with Nestle/CokeCola who are good at taking water and ruining aquifers/rivers/land etc that people need to survive.
Different issues IMO and yes an emotional topic having lived in drought conditions often and left a nation that is unnecessarily hungry - so zero arrogance.
Ultimately, Las Vegas and our civilisation in the American South West is going to disappear, like the Indians did before us.”
Fits in nicely with Agenda 21.

If the shoe fits....
Here's one that shows Lake Mead water levels since the Hoover Dam began impounding water there in 1936:

Not if you live their.
A real life Dune. Where's the (fiat) spice to save them?
The Fremen had millions of decaliters of water stored in secret caches.
The spice is and always was oil....
I'd ride the worms but I cant bring myself to touch Harry Reid
Another classic from DaveyJones Locker :-)
Didn't happen till the fifth book, after the tyrant (Leto II), Paul's son, became a worm and hoarded all the spice in the known universe for 3,500 years.
Axlotl tanks = Printing press
"Axlotl tanks are the means by which the Bene Tleilax reproduce a living human being from the cells of a cadaver, a type of cloning called a ghola as well as the creation of genetically engineered assassins known as Face Dancers. Later in the series, the axlotl tanks are engineered to replicate the spice Melange"
Face Dancers
Sort of like a Lap Dancer
only higher. Yeah, I get it.
good thing our old friend Cuba is surrounded by it.
maybe stop watering the lawns.
The county is purchasing "lawn" at $1.50/sq.ft to encourage dummys to convert to "desert" landscaping. Suppossedly they now have enough to go round 3/4 of the planet at 18" strips. Can humans get even more stupider?
Yes
It's been a while, but last time I visited the lawns didn't seem particularly lush. There did seem to be a fair number of swiming pools.
And I remember a particular hotel with a large fountain display.
i lived there for awhile in 1997, after leaving the puget sound area. upon arriving in vegas i'd thought, 'well one feature will be no mold!'. but there were green lawns everywhere, and at the apartment complex where i was staying, they watered enough that it would build up in puddles right against the wall of the building... and sure enough there was mold. lol they were watering so much that their formerly 0% humidity environment was hovering at 15-20% most of the time. seemed like it anyway. i was like, 'could there just be natural yards? all of this grass is insanity.' of course, that was almost 20 years ago, so in the meantime maybe the city isn't as green as it was then. it's actually kind of a cool place, if you stay away from the tourists and get to know some of the 'locals'. ymmv
