Is The Cloward-Piven Strategy Being Used To Destroy America?
Submitted by Brandon Smith of Alt-Market blog,
In the mid-sixties at the height of the “social revolution” the line between democratic benevolence and outright communism became rather blurry. The Democratic Party, which controlled the presidency and both houses of Congress, was used as the springboard by social engineers to introduce a new era of welfare initiatives enacted in the name of “defending the poor”, also known as the “Great Society Programs”. These initiatives, however, were driven by far more subversive and extreme motivations, and have been expanded on by every presidency since, Republican and Democrat alike.
At Columbia University, sociologist professors Richard Cloward and Francis Fox Piven introduced a political strategy in 1966 in an article entitled 'The Weight Of The Poor: A Strategy To End Poverty'. This article outlined a plan that they believed would eventually lead to the total transmutation of America into a full-fledged centralized welfare state (in other words, a collectivist enclave). The spearpoint of the Cloward-Piven strategy involved nothing less than economic sabotage against the U.S.
Theoretically, according to the doctrine, a condition of overwhelming tension and strain could be engineered through the overloading of American welfare rolls, thereby smothering the entitlement program structure at the state and local level. The implosion of welfare benefits would facilitate a massive spike in poverty and desperation, creating a financial crisis that would lead to an even greater cycle of demand for a fully socialized system. This desperation would then “force” the federal government to concentrate all welfare programs under one roof, nationalize and enforce a socialist ideology, and ultimately, compact an immense level of power into the hands of a select few.
Cloward and Piven claimed that this could be accomplished at a grassroots level through community activism, and, that it would facilitate a more compassionate federal authority, however, there are numerous problems with these assertions.
The Cloward-Piven Strategy has nothing to do with grassroots activism, and accomplishes nothing tangible for the downtrodden poverty class. In fact, I would dare to say that Cloward and Piven as well as most social engineers are well aware that the concept ultimately only serves to give even more dominance to the establishment and pilfer even more freedom from the masses.
Cloward-Piven is not limited to the destabilization of state and local welfare programs. It can easily be used against federal level entitlements, and in reality, is much more effective against an entity with the proven tendency towards exponential debt spending. Though the federal government may be able to borrow fiat dollars through the Federal Reserve to prolong welfare rolls while the states cannot, a more volatile threat arises when debt monetization begins to wear down the purchasing power of the currency. Weakened purchasing power results in reduced consumer activity, less industrial growth, less GDP, and obviously, more poverty. The dollar has lost approximately 98% of its purchasing power since 1972, and after 50 years of the so-called “War on Poverty”, nearly one third of the American population now repeatedly slips under the official poverty line.
In the past decade alone, the number of people dependent on food stamps and EBT for their survival in the U.S. has doubled from 25 million people to nearly 50 million people. Those who receive some kind of payment from the government, including those on social security, disability, and veterans benefits, are approximately 100 million. Americans on social security do not consider themselves welfare recipients because they paid into the system, however, the point remains that if the federal money tap shuts down due to overwhelming participation, the checks will stop whether you paid into the system or not.
In the end, it is the Federal Government itself that is most vulnerable to the Cloward-Piven Strategy, and I believe the goal is to set fire to ALL social structures in the U.S., then assimilate them into a new globalist system.
The tactic of overwhelming the welfare structure REQUIRES the complicity of the government itself. A grassroots activist movement cannot and will never compel federal and state governments to expand welfare initiatives if they do not wish to. If welfare programs are not expanded beyond their capacity to be maintained, they cannot be overwhelmed. Therefore, government must cooperate with the Cloward-Piven Strategy by generating more and more welfare programs to be exploited. That is to say, the elitists who control our government, regardless of their claimed political party, must WANT to arrange circumstances to allow for Cloward-Piven to be successful.
Another key component of Cloward-Piven is the existence of an immense number of poverty stricken people. Without a significant portion of the population under the poverty level, there is no mass of people to use as a weapon. Again, grassroots activists would be hard pressed to actually create the kind of poverty levels they would need for exploitation. But wait! Government, along with the aid or direction of central bankers, is able to create any level of poverty it wishes at any time by simply pretending to bungle everything it does. Once again, Cloward-Piven (much like Saul Alinsky's repertoire of propaganda scams) is far more useful to the power elite than it is to the common citizen. As former White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, famously said:
“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before...”
In light of the Cloward-Piven Strategy, which is at its very core a method to artificially induce crisis, the otherwise insane policy actions of the Obama Administration and preceding puppet presidents now become perfectly logical. Obama, after all, has been a long time proponent of the methods of Saul Alinsky, the left wing gatekeeper equivalent to Neo-Con godfather Leo Strauss. Cloward and Piven were also both avid followers of Alinsky, who promoted lies, misdirection, subversion, and abandonment of conscience in order to win social power at any cost (special note – Alinsky also dedicated his book 'Rules For Radicals' to Lucifer...yeah, to the friggin' devil).
Under Obama's watch alone, our real national debt including unfunded liabilities and entitlements has risen to nearly $200 trillion. Our “official” national debt has gone from $10 trillion to $17 trillion in the short time Obama has been in office. Real unemployment including U-6 measurements stands at around 20% of all Americans. Personal wealth and savings have plummeted. Wages remain in stasis while prices on necessary goods continue to rise.
In my articles 'The Socialization Of America Is Economically Impossible' and 'Obamacare: Is It A Divide-And-Conquer Distraction?', I examined much evidence suggesting that Obamacare was actually designed to fail, and that the bumbling of the Obama White House when dealing with the program was purely deliberate. When coupled with Obama's handling of the current illegal immigration conflict, I would say that the Cloward-Piven Strategy is in full force.
Why fight tooth and nail against all common sense and history, why lie openly to millions of registered voters to get the program in place, only to allow it to derail because of a poorly designed website!? Because, Obama and his handlers know full well that it will end up costing the country billions that we cannot afford, and aid in a resulting crash.
Why the sudden surge of illegal immigrants into the U.S.? Why not! The White House has made it clear that it has every intention of keeping them within America by allowing the border patrol to ship the detained across the country where they are then released. Obama's threat to use executive action to force through his own version of the immigration bill is the icing on the cake. Amnesty is essentially guaranteed, I believe, in the near term, which is why tens of thousands of Central American parents are willing to send their children on a journey where they could very well be kidnapped by sex traffickers or killed. If the White House really wanted to stop this humanitarian crisis, the President would state publicly and clearly that America is not a drive through welfare center, that there will be no free goodies at the second window, and that there will be no chance of amnesty, instead of diverting more agents to the border to ensure more illegals are shipped into the interior.
The president does not wish to stop the flood of immigrants exactly because Cloward-Piven requires their presence. Not only would this officially add millions of people to welfare rolls, but I would venture to suggest that Obama will likely include automatic sign-up to universal healthcare as part of his amnesty measures.
If there wasn't enough strain on the social welfare structure before, there certainly will be now.
I would remind readers, though, that in the final analysis this is NOT about Obama. I have seen other commentators including Glenn Beck discuss Cloward-Piven in the past, but always through the blinders of the false left/right paradigm. Obama could not have attained the levels of destabilization he has without standing on the shoulders of those political errand boys who came before him. Ronald Reagan, for instance, was also responsible for signing the Immigration Reform And Control Act of 1986 into law, which was supposed to trade the amnesty of 3 million illegals for greater border security. This new "more comprehensive" security was never implemented by Reagan. Both Republican and Democratic regimes have made our current calamity possible, and the leaderships behind both parties are nothing more than paid mascots for international financiers and globalists who have a very different vision of what America should be.
If we allow ourselves to fall into the trap of making the developing crisis about a singularly unimportant man such as Obama, then the elites get exactly what they want – an angry and desperate citizenry out for the blood of a middleman and out for the blood of each other, while they sit back, relax, and wait to swoop in as our financial saviors with strings attached.
For those naïve enough to assume that Cloward-Piven is just a well intentioned activist method, it is important to understand that even if that were so, the effect of the Cloward-Piven Strategy will never achieve the goal its creators claimed to support. In my view, it is probable that they never really intended for it to produce wealth equality or an increased quality of life.
The tactic can only decrease wealth security by making all citizens equally destitute. As we have seen in numerous socialist and communist experiments over the past century, economic harmonization never creates wealth or prosperity, it only siphons wealth from one area and redistributes it to others, evaporating much of it as it is squeezed through the grinding gears of the establishment machine. Socialism, in its very essence, elevates government to the role of all-pervasive parent, and casts the citizenry down into the role of dependent sniveling infant. Even in its most righteous form, Cloward-Piven seeks to make infants of us all, whether we like it or not.

This is a brilliant article, and may be too little too late. And one of the most brilliant phrases, "a drive-through welfare" country is perfect phrasing. The point being, though, that protecting and defending the country for The People of that Country is the Single most important action of the government. This has ceased to exist. Under Pelosi, Read, and Oboma, we see the culmination of ceding our country under the guise of a "compassionate" noblesse oblige which dismantles the Christian and, yes, white country that we have always been. There are numerous studies that show once any single group grows larger than ten percent, there is massive disruption which is used by that group to increase their power and control.
As the US has become, Voluntarily (so-called due to immigration policies) a nation of riff raff, third worlders carrying disease and get-mine-now mentality that all third worlders have, we see this country ceding entire states, such as California to the third worlders.
You may ask yourself this question: What EXACTLY is the physical carrying capacity of the US? In other words, how many people can be provided fresh water, fresh air, and food based on the US land's ability to provide? President Lyndon Johnson said we should never go beyond 200 million people. Now we are running around 360 million people and there are almost 50 MILLION Mexicans in the US. The Mexicans are brilliant because they have there country, one of amazing natural resources still to be exploited, while they use up ours to educate, feed, and provide employement for their own. For those of you who think all people are "the same?" You should be aware that they have not concern for you, and would throw you out of your house, take it for their own, and not blink. Third worlders have entirely different mind sets from traditional Americans.
What is the answer? Easy. NOT ONE MORE IMMIGRANT for any reason. Birth drop babies have no claim to citizenship because the first rule of law is "clean hands." You cannot benefit from an illegal act of any kind, which is why bank robbers don't get to keep the money (of course, if they could the lawyers would take it to "defend" them...moving on....) The oft cited ruling on a Chinese child of immigrants known as Wong Kim Ark (1884) is a case in point. Wong Kim Ark is a complex case with specific circumstances. Using that law to deem any child, dropped onto our soil from the womb, is lucicrous.
On this, the 4th of July, remember that it is an easy thing to take back this country. 1. Throw out all birth drop babies. 2. Sweep the country of illegals and recognize the rights of US Citizens as having the right to their own country as preeminent. 3. Recognize that we are past carrying capacity. Houston is recycling pee water and serving it to citizens under the aegis that "the goverment is here to help you." That is until they 'VA" the water because they want to save on cleansing chemicals. 4. No government employee should make more than one-half what is paid in the private sector (business).
The Single Greatest problem in this country is that government workers salaries were set when the flush of stock market and housing money was circulating at fantastic rates. These salaries and benefits are those of masters not servants. In Washington State, Jorge Carrasco, who is the CEO of Seattle City Light (perfect example) convinced the Mayor of Seattle Ed Murray to provide him a $120,000 dollar raise from his current salary of $245,000. There was an lash back and the Mayor has stepped back from the raise. However, the point is this: All government salaries should be cut by one-half. These are public SERVANTS. They are greasing each other's palms by giving each other benefits. When you look at any public employee, know that their yearly benefits are another one-half of their salaries. And sick days, paid holidasy, and vacation time add up to almost TWO MONTHS every year of paid time off.
The argument always used is that "someone else, somewhere" in a govt job makes more, which is the perfect communist argument for govt employees seeking to soak the taxpayers. Again all of these ludicrous salaries were set when the economy was flush and money was whirling around.
At the Veteran's Administration, you might ask yourself why were Veteran's being systemcatically murdered? Answer: Look at the VA compensation of the employees, their benefits, and who they hire. The VA jobs were a slush fund for democrats. To fund that slush fund of jobs and benefits, you can't also actually take care of sick veterans. Voila! Can you say, see ya later, veteran? I ran the numbers and there is one Veterans' Administration employee per thirty veterans. Think about that. That means one employee is assigned to approximately two veterans per month as their job.
This is long but this country will not survive with foreigners in our govt jobs. Will not survive with foreigners trampling the rights of those who've been here longer than five minutes (no we are not "all equal"; you may have citizenship but you have to earn your rights and no one who is not native born here should be allowed to hold a govt job). Take back your country or our children become the slaves of the foreigners. They are much more brutal than you imagine.
"You may ask yourself this question: What EXACTLY is the physical carrying capacity of the US? In other words, how many people can be provided fresh water, fresh air, and food based on the US land's ability to provide? "
That is a long-time-frame question. The problem right now is JOBS, and a system that can't provide them, here or in Mexico. And a system collapse that is coming whether we like it or not.
And whether we are going to buy into a narrative that blames the victims - each other - for a collapse that was none of our doing.
As you state, "I believe the goal is to set fire to ALL social structures in the U.S., then assimilate them into a new globalist system.".
By setting fire to our social structures, I take it to mean the work place, because as you sugest, we are to get used to being welfare recipients and it's completely normal.
But understand - we lost our indepencence when we lost our health as a people through a systematic poisoning campaign by our organized crime Jesuit rulers.
This agenda places toxic metals and chemicals in our air, food, water and medicine disables our immunity and clear and critical thinking skills.
It's known as the chemical dumbing down of the public. View this from a prominant neurosurgeon Dr Russell Blaylock MD

People are beginning to wake up to what's happening. But those who are finally starting to see the evil that our government is capable of within its own borders, refuse (like Glenn Beck) to believe that we're capable of anything but saintly good in our international dealings.
"Genocide? Us? NO! USA! USA!"
Have these "intellectually superior" strategists and think tanks sell all the fancy shit they have and live in a shithole for years and years.
Then well talk, but to me they are ants and anklebiters like little teacup puppies.
Unstoppable force meets a immovable object made into reality, happy 4 th all.

But there's no conspiracy or plan, it's all just a happy confluence of independent accidents and happenstances, that are all coincidentally, mutually supporting....

North America is in the grips of a transformative event that is rooted in something south America instituted in the 1700's. The "Racial Democracy" that they are instituting means the total mixing of races in hopes of escaping racism, to create a "great society" that LBJ pushed onto a unwilling society that was to gripped in fear of falling Atom bombs and morning an assasinated JFK, A man who was not willing to follow the organization, a true leader, and that cost him his life.

Its about sex and control, about money and power, about religion and the mind.

You're an idiot. Focus your rage on the people in the fed govt. That's where it belongs.
Rage? haha thats smooth. I do not think the fed is bad, try wall street.
break down and liquify the middle class in suburbia into the poorer ghettos.
Wasn't sure before, but now you've made it obvious. You're a scumbag traitor. FU.
you will have to ilaberate? cause I do not speak idiot as fluently as you.
Vin your apparently are "the idiot" lol.. nice trolling.
This scumbag in the WH is following the Cloward-Piven "Rules for Radicals" to the letter.

QUESTION: If Obama cuts down another tree in the forest of liberty, and only
members of the 4th estate are there, does it make a sound???
ANSWER: What tree?
Good Lord, it took you this long to figure it out?! What the hell do you think has been happening, it's all part of the plan. I'm just a political layman and even I could see this long ago.
Wake the F#@k up America. These people in charge must literally be hanged by the neck until dead. And there's 100's of them not including most of the Congress. Even then, they've already destroyed the currency and have millions of people dependent.
Happy 4th.
hahaha.
What a load of huey, what a fool.
here is a quote you might try and learn from Vin.
"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." -Voltaire.
"... the elitists who control our government, regardless of their claimed political party, must WANT to arrange circumstances to allow for Cloward-Piven to be successful."
But to different ends.

I agree that it is too little too late. I do believe the Powers will divide and conquer. Get all the different groups of people fighting one another then come in and mop up.
Funny how 1966 has been a reoccurring good things happening to me year, until I read this article.
Peace Brother
Fuck it all! Too many of you people fall into the psych ops being employed against us as the only thing to fear is fear itself. Wake up from that and destroy them! Everyday, I see, I hear, tens,,,hundreds of peopple that are awake and waking up others. Believe that the truth will prevail and pass the word. Information and communication is a great asset. Peace onto you my brother.
You have to be a total dumbass to believe this! Everything is controlled by force--everything else is Matrix shit..."We couldn't get them to willfully submit unless they, thought it was reality."
Force is simply a reinforcement for the powers of manipulation. Do you really believe we were forced to buy foreign goods and hire illegal aliens? Do you really think we were forced to enlist in the military to fight unwinnable foreign wars? Do you really think we were forced to borrow money that any third grade math class could figure out was unpayable?
Really?
If there is any hope, we must first take responsibility for what WE have done.
My experience is, the "people" who rule this world are not especially bright. They do not know much about technology. They are not creative and they are not complex problem solvers.
They do have a couple of things going for them. They know history, real history and they have access to knowledge and technology created by others in the distant past. They are also not what one would call "good" people. They will do anything to maintain and increase their power, no matter the lengths and who it hurts. They will kill people, families, countries without even a thought of regret or remorse. They are very, very, very shallow and self centered. They do have a chamillion like ability to appear to be good, concerned and non-psychopathic, while at the same time being completely mentally unbalanced. They put on a good show.
Because they put on a good show, they are very good at using people to make up for their many shortcomings. They have leagues if useful idiots doing the thinking and acting for them ... with a blind hope that some of the power will wear off on them.
Would they use the Cloward-Piven strategy? Sure. They are too stupid and lazy to think of anything themselves... and they don't care at all who it hurts.
My experience is, the "people" who rule this world are not especially bright.
They don't have to be especially bright if they can(and they can) do anything they want by force.(of government)
You are confusing intelligence force with ability. These people may not be able to figure out how to use toilet paper but you can bet they either have spent a great deal of time studying people are just have a natural "savant" ability to understand what motivates people. They have a clarity of thought, or vision, to know how we will respond to every input. This is why their actions have become so transparent. They have the confidence to know what will move most people and what will not. Just because some of us see this as blatant power grab and corruption, does not mean that most people do. This has been a struggle for me all of my life. People absolutely amaze me that they cannot see what is in their best interest. Its almost as if they are deliberately self destructive. I think this resides in all of us but obviously more so in some than others and I believe this is what plays a significant role in most peoples success and failures.
We have always had a weakness for the big lie, something for nothing, or nothing to see here folks, because we don't want to pay for things and don't want to believe that things are as bad or risky as they actually are.
This will be with us forever, and will only get worse the longer we deny it.
What a complete moron! This guy has been watching to much Glenn Beck on TV.
This is what happens when zerohedge articles start getting linked on drudgereport. All the loony baby boomers show up posting crazy shit.
Bravo.
I must admit I really like reading this guy Brandon Smith. He's a prepper guy with a head on his shoulders, even into HAM radio ( which made me look more closely.) I am not sure he is right, but this is certainly well worth the read.
But don't give the politicians too much credit for any strategy, no matter how off the wall it may appear. A politician looks only to get re elected so he can continue to receive his EBT type infusions from both tax payers and the corporatocracy. They will sell their country away to keep their cushy jobs, as would be expected from someone who is generally incapable of any value added work product to offer to society. (Lawyers, bankers ).
The politicians march to the drum dictated by the coporates and bankers which conceivably could be following the directives of the highest echelons who want to degrade the US, create crisis to allow them to push through their socialist agenda, which ultimately takes power from the middle class and transfers to the elites. The masses become as dumb and useless as sausage.
The government has to be compared to a mob as far as the psychology of the individual whose behavior is transformed when he becomes part of the mob. Basically, the individual in a mob loses his personal identity and with it, any seeming responsibility for his actions. The bigger the mob, the more anonymous he becomes, and the less inhibited he becomes.
Back to the government comparison. Once the government grows in size/ reaches critical mass, the members lose their individuality and personal accountability. Government expands into quasi agencies like the TSA, HSA, NSA etc. These groups also benefit from loss of individual accountability and repsonsibility. Furthermore, when regular value added/work product civilian jobs disappear, it is easier to recruit these people to the dark side. Thus with a larger "mob", the actions become more egregious. When conflict and social distintegration begin to appear, the government is ready to strike.
One of the most cogent articles ever on ZH.
Very soon, no one will be alive who lived thru the 1960s to post 2001 transition. And just after that, no one will be alive who lived most of their adult life pre-2001.
And then, not knowing what was lost, all will be lost.
“As he watched the eyeless face of the Administration with the jaw moving rapidly up and down, one had a curious feeling that this was not a real human being but some kind of dummy. It was not the man’s brain that was speaking, it was his larynx. The stuff that was coming out of him consisted of words, but it was not speech in the true sense: it was a noise uttered in unconsciousness, like the quacking of a duck.” GO 1984
Cloward-Pivey might be or have been a strategy of one set of nomadic sociopaths but the other set of nomadic sociopaths has made sure there's not going to be any money to redistribute.
As there won't be enough money to fund both the warfare and the welfare state what will happen is a *reduction* in welfare to the minimum needed to keep the cities from burning down topped up with overt state repression so that as much of the warfare state as possible can be maintained.
Effectively what is going to happen is America is going to become like 1950s Russia while Russia becomes like 1950s America.
(Only if the neocons don't start a nuclear war of course. In that case all bets are off)
democrats controlled the white house from 32 to 68, with the exception of eisenhower, who was a general not a politician. its not remarkable at all that they thought they had a mandate to govern. after nixon/ford there was carter/reagan (liberal republican) bush 1 (1 term), clinton, and al gore who had the election taken from him by Scotus. bush 2, in which the republicans had control of just about everything, and drove the economy in the ditch, to the degree that their candidate (mccain) was irrelevant (gore won the popular vote anyway). the merging of corporate and private interests is a bipartisan love fest. (60s) so if you had Romney you would still have mandated health insurance (tell me differently) with less emphasis on propping up medicaid programs to the states. Romney might have made the healthcare industry suck it up. cradle to grave care will be a corporate/government policy, no matter which party has control. with some difference to who gets the profits.
quite.
the point of Obamacare (or Romneycare if he'd won) is to take your house off you to pay for medical bills when you're old
inheritance for the proles -> middle class and "they" don't want a middle class.
there might be a nominally "left" and "right" version of "they" but in practise they're basically the same
"The tactic of overwhelming the welfare structure REQUIRES the complicity of the government itself." Mr. Smith, this is where you and all of the other critics of the welfare state get it wrong. The REAL ENABLERS of the expansion of the welfare state were the greatest generation themselves. Whenever the moviephone news reel was run at the movie theatre, it keep parrotting the virtues of the social security act without anycounterpoint or questioning the disadvantages of it. Nowadays, I never hear anyone under the age of sixty praise Social Security.
the people beg for a bailout before .gov offers it but .gov knows welfare is a means of controlling the animal spirits of the people. a full belly wil take a lot of abuse before projectile vomitting on a target of wrath.
USA 5% have 99% of the wealth correct then no wonder the stats are what they are 90% of us work just to survive.
Cloward-Piven are evil, evil I tell U. Glenn Beck has their number. This old 60’s lefty professor is clearly responsible for our current situation. She, and her departed husband, are responsible for everything that is wrong in America. Absolutely everything. It’s obvious, just listen to her….

All of this, of course, is a reactionary paranoid fantasy. Rahm Emanuel is no more Frances Fox Piven's stooge than Obama is a Muslim. But the looniness of it has not stopped the Cloward-Piven conspiracy theory from spreading across tea party networks. And the left's gut reaction upon hearing of it--to laugh it off as a Scooby-Doo comic mystery--does nothing to blunt its appeal or limit its impact. In order to respond, alas, we have to understand, and that means going through the looking glass.
Horowitz first wrote of the Cloward-Piven strategy on his website Discoverthenetworks.org, which claims to be "a guide to the left." His description is a crude and false account of what Cloward and Piven argued. For example, the words "capital" and "capitalism" never appear in their article. The piece is about precipitating a crisis in the welfare system by legally enrolling masses of eligible recipients, which the welfare bureaucracy could not handle, thus creating a demand for more radical reforms, like a guaranteed minimum income--a proposal that Nixon, of all people, floated in 1969 and that, in fact, Democratic-majority Congresses voted down through 1972 [see Peter Edelman and Barbara Ehrenreich, page 15]. Moreover, as Piven recently explained to me, although the article was written as a strategic thought experiment, in many ways it described and reacted to changes already sweeping the nation, chief among them the civil rights and welfare rights movements, which created newly politicized constituencies to which the Democratic Party had to respond. "The mainstream," Piven says, "was responsive to the idea that we could end poverty because of these movements." In short, the stresses placed on the welfare system were caused by a confluence of factors, of which an article published in The Nation, it is safe to say, was but one, and most likely a minor one at that.
Nevertheless--history and facts be damned--it is Horowitz's caricature of Cloward-Piven that is now the Rosetta stone of American politics for the tea party's self-styled intellectuals. Glenn Beck has brought up Cloward and Piven on at least twenty-eight episodes of his show over the past year. Beck is sometimes aided by a blackboard on which he has diagramed something called "The Tree of Revolution," which links Che Guevara, SEIU and ACORN's Wade Rathke to Saul Alinsky, the Sierra Club's Carl Pope, Bill Ayers and, perhaps most improbably, to White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett. In the center of the tree's arching trunk, above SDS and Woodrow Wilson (!?) but below Barack Obama, who adorns the tree's crown, Beck has scrawled "Cloward & Piven."
Beck's tree, however, is derivative of and pales in comparison with the flow chart created by Jim Simpson, a self-described businessman and former George H.W. Bush White House budget analyst and the leading proponent of the Cloward-Piven conspiracy theory. Cribbing from Horowitz, but adding his own very special embellishments, Simpson has penned an 18,000-word, six-part exposé of the "Cloward-Piven strategy," which can be found on the websites Americanthinker.com and Americandaughter.com. I have read it so you don't have to. The central innovations of this wild and woolly compilation of right-wing myths, published in installments during the summer and fall of 2008, are to attribute nearly every past, present and future crisis to Cloward and Piven and to link them to Obama's political past and agenda. Among the schemes Simpson credits to the Cloward-Piven strategy are healthcare reform, the Employee Free Choice Act, cap and trade, immigration reform, hate crimes legislation and public financing of elections. For Simpson, the Cloward-Piven strategy is vast, vast--"a malevolent overarching strategy that has motivated many, if not all, of the most destructive radical leftist organizations in the United States since the 1960s." And beyond: somehow, Gorbachev's Crimean dacha is implicated, as are Saddam Hussein's palaces.
Most integral to Simpson's theory, however, and where his rather impressive skills as a collagist descend into the orthodoxy of Fox News, is ACORN, which he says has been "the new tip of the Cloward-Piven spear" since 1970. In what is by now a familiar right-wing story line, ACORN is responsible for the global economic crisis. By using the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act--itself a conspiratorial response to the bogus crisis of housing discrimination--ACORN enrolled masses of low-income people in subprime mortgages, creating a housing bubble that caused stock markets around the world to crash, paving the way for bank nationalization and socialism via the bailout and the stimulus. Whew! There are, of course, more than a few pages missing in this whodunit--for instance, that it was ACORN that tried to warn Congress about risky and predatory lenders; that it was too-big-to-fail banks and complex financial instruments that spread the contagion across the worldwide economy; and that in fact the banks have not been nationalized. [For a debunking of this myth, see Peter Dreier and John Atlas's "The GOP's Blame-ACORN Game," October 22, 2008.]
If Simpson's chain of events is not particularly original, his theory of intentionality is: according to him, the left, guided by the Cloward-Piven strategy, was fully aware that subprime mortgages would produce a calamitous financial bubble; it supported subprime lending not to help minorities become homeowners but to sabotage capitalism from the inside. "The failure is deliberate," he writes repeatedly in italics.
...
Why does the Cloward-Piven conspiracy theory hold such appeal? And what, if anything, does it accomplish? On one level it's entertainment. It allows believers to tease out the left's secrets and sinister patterns. Since none of the evidence that supposedly confirms the existence of the Cloward-Piven strategy is, in fact, secret, this proves rather easy to do, and so the puzzle is both thrilling and gratifying.
On another level, the theory is an adaptive response to the tea party's fragmentation. As Jonathan Raban pointed out in The New York Review of Books, the tea party is an uneasy conclave of Ayn Rand secular libertarians and fundamentalist Christian evangelicals; it contains birthers, Birchers, racists, xenophobes, Ron Paulites, cold warriors, Zionists, constitutionalists, vanilla Republicans looking for a high and militia-style survivalists. Because the Cloward-Piven strategy is so expansive, it allows tea party propagandists to engage any one--or all--of the pet issues that incite these various constituencies. For some, the left's "offensive to promote illegal immigration" is "Cloward-Piven on steroids." For others, it is the Cloward-Piven "advocates of social change" who "used the Fed, which was complicit in the scheme" to "engineer" the 2008 fiscal crisis. In his speech at the tea party convention in Nashville, WorldNetDaily's Joseph Farah notes that Obama was just 4 when the Cloward-Piven strategy was written. "We think," Farah said. He paused dramatically before adding, "Without the birth certificate we really just don't know," as a sizable portion of the audience broke into applause.
Racial and class resentments, however, are never far from the surface, no matter which subject is slotted into the great Cloward-Piven conspiracy machine. The word "radical," for example, is almost always preceded by the word "black" when it can be (George Wiley), but nobody is ever called a "white radical" (Bill Ayers). Whenever grammatically possible--and sometimes even when it is not--Cloward and Piven are identified as "Columbia professors" and Obama as a "Harvard graduate." (Beyond just heaping Nixonian scorn on elites, the Cloward-Piven conspiracy credits the left with an almost divine intelligence.)
And as of now, the Cloward-Piven strategy is most often used to put two classes of people on the tea party's enemies list: those who work for the Obama administration and those who work to increase the political power of poor people of color. (Doing both--as was the case with Van Jones--can be fatal.) It is the latter target that is particularly appalling: here is a so-called populist movement promulgating a master narrative that holds poor people to blame for the world's woes. The precise impact of this conspiracy theory and the broader movement it incites on Obama's legislative agenda is, as of now, unclear. But the toll it has taken on organizations that advocate for poor people of color could not be more stark. On the weekend the healthcare reform bill cleared the House, tea party activists descended on Washington to decry "the end of America"; their bitter pill was soothed by front-page coverage of the end of something else--ACORN announced it was on the verge of bankruptcy, the victim of what CEO Bertha Lewis called "a series of well-orchestrated, relentless, well-funded right-wing attacks."
Perhaps most critical, the Cloward-Piven conspiracy theory pushes the tea party's kettle closer to a boil. In its obsession with voter fraud and the potential illegitimacy of the 2008 election--and the democratic process itself--the conspiracy suggests a tit-for-tat strategy for victory: if the left is going to cynically manipulate the system to produce tyranny, then so will we. How? To begin, there's the tried-and-true tactic of suppressing the poor minority vote--which would next place Project Vote in the tea party's cross hairs. But why stop there? Like every good conspiracy theory, this one too is a call to arms.

trader 1, so many words to say there is no conspiracy- and knowing the tea party so well (even though it is thru the prisim of that unbiased fact filled NYT book reviews), so verbose and so wrong." taxed enough already "never appears in this rant, but alleged racism and tin foil hat voter fraud- you stoop to defend acorn, a scam democrat corrupt mafia. too often you post here hatred of tea party, without attempting to see it is just a reflection of the fact the D and R's are coopted..it is people fed up with Big .gov. you are one sick person.

We are going down the drain but there is nothing to see here. Everything is fine. There is no agenda.Sure, right, nothing to see here, move along......
There is no conspiracy because they have done it right in front of our face. And no defense of what is happening is needed. Simply attack those pointing out what is happening and why.
The evil fucking "tea party"???? Really? Glen Beck??? really?

Independence Day from Washington D.C. Bitchez. Always claim independence from tyranny.
Educational goal number 1: obtain a globally recognized PhD degree and then rescind citizenship. Screw the Washington D.C. traitors.
Another problem with the C.P. strategy is that the stolen wealth is concentrated and those holding it are the main individual targets of militaries, revolutionaries and millions of pissed off lawyers.
The net cost for welfare programs like free health care and generous unemployment benefits is very small for the upper-middle classes and the upper classes if the number of people with very small incomes and the number of unemployed people are very small.
If you got 2 % unemployment rather than 10 % unemployment, unemployment benefits can be 5 times as high without causing larger expenditures for the public sector. And if almost nobody with a full-time job makes less than $30,000 per year, the net cost for free health care for the upper-middle classes and the upper classes is very small. Norway is a society with very little unemployment, a high labour participation rate where probably no full-time job pays less than $35,000 per year. Free health care is not a burden to the upper middle-classes and the upper classes in Norway.
But if you got lots of excessive labour which no employer needs and 50 % of the employees make less than $30,000 per year because that´s what the market wants to pay, well, then free health care may become expensive for the upper middle-classes and the upper classes.
My assessment is that if Lyndon B. Johnson, and the presidents that followed, had pursued another strategy, and would not have created an excessive supply of labour, almost no American would have made less than $35,000 per year despite less unemployment and a higher labour participation rate than today. Free health care would not have been a burden to the upper-middle classes and the upper classes (but the lower-upper classes would probably not have been able to afford maids). But under current conditions I guess that free health care would become a burden to the upper-middle classes and the upper classes.
I also suspect that Americans, unlike Europeans, would might have preferred to pay for their own health care, if they could have afforded that. But Americans who can´t afford their own health care probably prefer that others pay for it rather than die from cancer, for instance. Some may be proud enough to die rather than force other to pay for it. But I guess that most Americans are not that proud even if libertarians and conservatives may try to persuade them to become that proud.
Something else that has been at work in the US for the last 100 years is Progressivism-in reality stealth marxism, a slow dismantling of our society from within thru gov't., universities, secondary education, churchs etc. There are "Progs" in both parties to be sure.
I can find no words for my rage at these sonsabitches who have done this to our country-may they rot in hell forever and a day.
