These Are The "Worst Possible States To Live In" As Ranked By Their Residents

Tyler Durden's picture

It should come as no surprise that when Gallup recently conducted a poll asking residents to rank if their state is the "worst possible to live in" a whopping 25% of its residents, by far the most of any states, responded Illinois. Which were the other "worst possible" states? The table below ranks them all.

How about the opposite: the best US states to live in? Here is the full list in descending order.

And some commentary from Gallup:

Residents of Western and Midwestern states are generally more positive about their states as places to live. With the exception of the New England states of New Hampshire and Vermont, all of the top 10 rated states are west of the Mississippi River. In addition to Montana and Alaska, Utah (70%), Wyoming (69%), and Colorado (65%) are among the 10 states that residents are most likely to say their state is among the best places to reside. Most of these states have relatively low populations, including Wyoming, Vermont, North Dakota, and Alaska -- the four states with the smallest populations in the nation. Texas, the second most populated state, is the major exception to this population relationship. Although it is difficult to discern what the causal relationship is between terrain and climate and positive attitudes, many of the top 10 states are mountainous with cold winters. In fact, the two states most highly rated by their residents -- Montana and Alaska -- are among not only the nation's coldest states but also both border Canada.

With the exception of New Mexico, all of the bottom 10 states are either east of the Mississippi River or border it (Louisiana and Missouri). New Jersey (28%), Maryland (29%), and Connecticut (31%) join Rhode Island among the bottom 10.

The results are based on a special 50-state Gallup poll conducted June-December 2013, including interviews with at least 600 residents in every state. For the first time, Gallup measured whether residents view their states as "the best possible state to live in," "one of the best possible states to live in," "as good a state as any to live in," or "the worst possible state to live in."

Few Americans say their states are the single best or worst places to live. Rather, the large majority of respondents say their states were either "one of the best" or "as good a state as any" place to live.

One in Four Illinois Residents Say Their State Is the Worst Place to Live

Illinois has the unfortunate distinction of being the state with the highest percentage of residents who say it is the worst possible place to live. One in four Illinois residents (25%) say the state is the worst place to live, followed by 17% each in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Throughout its history, Illinois has been rocked by high-profile scandals, investigations, and resignations from Chicago to Springfield and elsewhere throughout the state. Such scandals may explain why Illinois residents have the least trust in their state government across all 50 states. Additionally, they are among the most resentful about the amount they pay in state taxes. These factors may contribute to an overall low morale for the state's residents.

Texans Most Likely to View the Lone Star State as the Very Best

Although Texas trails Montana and Alaska in terms of its residents rating it as the best or one of the best places to live, it edges out Alaska (27%) and Hawaii (25%) in the percentage of residents who rate it as the single best place to live.

Texans' pride for their state as the single best place to live is not surprising when viewed in the context of other measures. According to Gallup Daily tracking for 2013, Texans rank high on standard of living and trust in their state government, and they are less negative than others are about the state taxes they pay. The same is true for Alaska and, to a lesser extent, Hawaii, which had relatively average scores for trust in state government and state taxes, but ranked high for standard of living. The three also have distinct histories, geographies, natural resources, and environmental features that may contribute to residents' personal enjoyment and pride in their locale.

Bottom Line

Residents with the most pride in their state as a place to live generally boast a greater standard of living, higher trust in state government, and less resentment toward the amount they pay in state taxes. However, the factors that residents use to determine whether their state is a great place to live are not always obvious. West Virginia, for example, falls far behind all other states on a variety of metrics, including economic confidence, well-being, standard of living, and stress levels. Still, over a third of West Virginians feel their state is among the best places to live, giving it a ranking near the middle of the pack.

That's just one point. I'm glad they decriminalized it, but they will become more liberal and the answer to everything is more taxes. Just like gambling, more states will legalize. Drop In the bucket for the welfare state.

Then we start Alamo 2 unless Texans keep getting distracted by stupid shit like football.

They are idiots for football like Canadians are for hockey or AH's in Taxachusetts for the Red Sox and Bruins. The border is being invaded and Perry does nothing and Texans have no clue. Ditto Brewer in AZ and Martinez in NM.  Having republicans governors really helped save us.  F**king joke.

Good state, bad state.  Has nothing to do with the natural environment.  It has everything to do with the people.  There's an old saying that applies:

There is no such thing as a ghetto.  There are only ghetto people.

There is some truth here, but not much.  It's all about social perception.  The same thing works for America as a whole...the vast majority of Americans think it's the greatest country on the planet, despite the fact that it's bankrupt and headed for civil war.

I'm from Texas and can't wait to leave this half redneck, half mexican desert.  Even my parents, who have long lived here and think it's paradise, get jealous every time they visit family in California.

But I do recognize that it's alot better than many shitholes on this planet.

One of the Nazi scientists who appears to have been involved with Plum Island was Dr. Erich Traub, who was in charge of the Third Reich's virological and bacteriological warfare program in World War II. Was Traub involved with experiments that led to the spread of Lyme Disease?

Did you know all 44 U.S. presidents have carried European royal bloodlines into office? 34 have been genetic descendants from just one person, Charlemagne, the brutal eighth century King of the Franks. 19 of them directly descended from King Edward III of England. In fact, the presidential candidate with the most royal genes has won every single American election.

There is no hope for Americans when after 200 years they still believe they won the revolutionary war.

Rhode Island's rank -- third worst -- is deserved.  Beautiful geography but liberal democrats dominate government with the predictable results.  If liberalism is a mental illness, then there is an epidemic here.  Fortunately, there is broad range of independents and conservatives who barely keep the lid on the crazies, but it's getting worse each year.

Colorado isn't that great, coming from a "Native" (God, that meme is so pathetic, like being from Colorado means anything). People come here from other states seeking the outdoors culture (whatever that is). It's a bunch of fake people living fake outdoors-based lives, or thinking they do. "I love the nountains" when the majority only go to the ski towns. And if you think Boulder means granola and hippies, you are mistaken. It's a bunch of trusifarians and old liberal money. The granola culture is fake. Well, at least the weed is reality.

Of course, the police, FBI, CIA, NSA, and Interpol keeping quiet about Jerry Brown taking orders from Joaquin Guzman Loera in Antelope Valley, California every day for 30 years makes this a moot point. Dontcha think? Senator MKULTRA? Pink undies don't cut it, sheriff. Step Up.

Massive unfunded liabilities, run for years by democrats and RINO's, outrageous taxes, old and dirty, etc.  California at least has the natural beauty, ports, good weather, etc. Illinois has politicians that are as corrupt as fuck (our current prez was a Senator from Illinois), flat as a tabletop for the most part, smells like manure most of the year and the weather sucks big-time.

Worst state hands down is NJ due to cost of living. Property taxes are brutal, it has among the highest rates of auto insurance in the US, income taxes are high, and every major city in the state is an hole. PA is no paradise either but my taxes are about half of what they would be in NJ and sales tax free DE is 30 minutes away.

IL doesn't surprise me either and I guess MS residents should be happy they aren't dead last. MS is a 3rd world country kept afloat by massive federal transfers and the only worthwhile places along the Gulf along Biloxi is a bit trashy. Florida is a collection of States. It is whatever you want it to be. Moved there in 72. If you want Deliverance just head North of Gainesville up the middle. If English is a challenge, try Dade County, Cuba.  You've got your redneck Riviera in the

Panhandle. East Coast is low income retirees and a few remaining natives. West Coast has changed so much in the last 40+ years, you wouldn't recognize the place. But the most beautiful uncrowded beaches on Earth are on those little bitty

barrier islands off Bradenton. Yes, it's God's Waiting Room, but wait 5 minutes and your annoying neighbors magically disappear. There's no state income tax, investment tax or inheritance tax.

I got tangled up again by my Russian wife.  I can take on the world but I can't beat her sometimes.  It all started with a former classmate who has just married a Russian gal.  It is pretty amazing how those women stick together and she wanted to show me some post on Facebook.  I deleted my FaceFuck account months ago.

I don't really care if she uses FaceFuck though because she can do whatever she wants.  We scrolled through her page and I saw what I thought was a hot chick and said, "Who the fuck was that?"  Some friend from Russia.  So we went on to discuss about livng in northwestern Wisconsin and how hard that is on Russian women when they first come here.  Ths place is ruthless in so many ways and it is, to a degree, a matter of isolation.  It is really hard to explain about Wisconsin and Minnesota.  There are plenty of fucked up .gov things here but at least in Minnesota there can no state level budget deficit.  I.E., there are no state level municiple bonds.  By the constitution of the state of Minnesota the budget MUST be balanced for each fiscal year.  We hold those fucktards to the letter of the law and it seems to work to some degree.

Then you have Minneapolis, they can issue bonds.  There is no state law that prevents this.  Cities can issue bonds but who buys them?  Someone is buying these turds.  How does that work?  I am pretty fucking sure I know how it works and it goes right back to the federal govt.  We could go balls deep into that but there is plenty of info out there about how corrupt it all is.

Now back to the "hot chick".   Males always notice hot chicks and what females do to make sure that they are noticed.  It is just part of life as it is.  Women will always do the same thing in that they always try to make themselves look better than they really are.  Men do not do this but we are too stupid sometmes ourselves.  I am lucky to have the woman I do but that does not mean that I will not mess with her head.  We scrolled back to the hot chick and I told my wife I wanted to sleep with her friend.  Not because I really wanted to but just to fuck with her.  The response was quite amazing.  Mrs. M really got me good here.

"You won't like her because she works for your second least favorite organization."   I was amazed that she was ranking how much I hate certain cabals.  Who evens says shit like, "Your second least favorite"?  That ruled out the Federal Reserve because that is number one for me.  For what that is worth, I had a cashier today checking my $20 bills with the famous pen.  The guy even said to me tha the was checking for counterfiet bills.  I had to ask, "Well did you find any yet?".  Laughter erupted in the store.

Well, so what is my second most favorite organizantion has to be the UN.  Bingo!  That hot gal works for the UN in New York and all of a sudden she wasn't that hot anymore.  Then Mrs.M said the following which is a statement in itself:  "She is Greek and she has a hairy ass.  You wouldn't like it."

That statement stopped me cold.  I would never cheat on my wife anyway but that one is very good.  I think she won.

I've lived in Michigan, Indiana, Florida, New Jersey, Maryland, Louisiana, and Texas.

My experience is that it depends on what stage of life you're in. If you're a kid, the Midwest is not a terrible place to grow up. And that might have changed somewhat over time, but I would never raise my kids in Maryland or New Jersey. Texas schools are dominated by football. Louisiana is a segregated society (the public schools are 80-90% black in Baton Rouge and New Orleans despite it being a 50/50 population split). Florida is ok, but the state has changed a lot since the 90s.

Louisiana was an awesome place to go to college though. Same for Florida.

Texas and New Jersey are good places to start careers. Louisiana was the worst.

I would never own a home in NJ, MD or LA. You're being farmed for taxes. Texas is not as bad because of the ISD system.

This is an interesting survey. It's more of "how aware are people that there's something better out there?"

five "Officer involved"  shootings by cops in Chicago just overnight last night.  One teen pulled a gun on a handfull of Chiraq cops and was shot over 20 times.  Mom on the news claiming little Johnnie was a good boy and didnt have a gun blah blah blah.  Body still lying in the street.

If little Johnnie was such a good boy mom why was he out in the streets at 2 AM?  Happiness will be Illinois in my rear view mirror.  I was transferred here in 1998 from Cincinnatti with my work.  My home is now worth what I paid for it in 1998 which really means nothing unless you have a buyer.

So in reality I have been doing nothing but paying my 7K a year property taxes for 15 years to feed the full body armor cops and the politicians and city,  county, and state employees pension funds.  Tolls doubled a few years back.  State income tax boosted from 3 to 5 %.  City of Chicago just bumped the phone tax per number from 2.50 a month to 3.90 a month because they could.

I run sales calls in south Chicago neighborhoods.  I am of a minority color from the natives.  Ruger SR38 on ankle legally now.  War zone does not begin to describe the streets when the jungle weather hits.  Winter time its a ghost town.  Nothing but snow plow drivers and cabs.  Night and day.

I have given 15 years of my life to generating income,  taxes and profits for my employer and the government beast.  I have no problem profiting my employer it is why he pays me.  To pay the beast that has become our local,  state and federal government irks the hell out of me.  The police state is full blow retard.  We now have speeding ticket cameras on 5 intersections that issue speeding ticket fines starting at 100 for ten over.  OUT OF CONTROL

I'm a life long Illinois resident...over four decades now.  I've lived in practcally every part of the state that isn't Chicago and the cultures vary widely.  The top and bottom are beautiful.  I've lived an hour from the bottom tip now for 16 yrs...it's gorgeous country here.  And the people are nice for the most part.  Visit the parks down here if you get a chance.

Chicago drowns this state...and Springfield.   Things will either change significantly soon or it will officially be the first state in bankruptcy.   I will say...the poll reflects a whole lot of pissed off people.  It's hard to tell how that'll pan out cuz the government is so corrupt...but it is at a tipping point.

But when I do finally move...and I will when my kids are beyond the regs of my divorce noose...I'm as likely to move to south america as any other state.  Illinois is bad...but aren't we just arguing over who is the prettiest turd in the poop bowl that is the US at this point really?

I found his comments about population density revealing, didn't you?  With the exception of Texas -- big population, but not sure about density -- all the best states were places where people live without elbowing their neighbors (or even knowing them).

I'm commenting on my own comment (narcissist here.)

So, this list corresponds neatly with pop density.  Here's the wki article on pop density with a ranking of all state, not total state population, but population density.

The outliers are ND/SD and NM/NV.

Population density ranked from least dense with best state to live in ranking following in paranthesis:

1 Alaska  (2)

2. Wyoming (4)

3. Montana (1)

4. ND and SD (8) and (14)

6. New Mexico and Nevada (45) and (39)

7. Idaho (17)

8. Nebraska and Kansas (18)and (37)

10. Utah  (3)

11. Oregon  (11)

12. Maine  (15)

13.  Colorado  (9)

14.  Iowa (16)

Mon, 07/07/2014 - 14:35 | 4932439 FrankDrakman
FrankDrakman's picture

Let me go another way:

Least-worst States:

40 Utah   Rank in % of black population 43 (1.27%)

41 Texas 18 <- the outlier (11.9%)

42 North Dakota 46 1.08%

43 Minnesota 31 4.5%

44 Maine  47 1.03%

45 Wisconsin 30 6.0%

46 Wyoming 42 1.29%

47 New Hampshire 44 1.22%

48 Colorado 33  4.28%

49 Iowa 40 2.68%

50 Montana 50 0.67%

I'm going to suggest Texas - and haven't Texans always had some outlandish ideas about their state, merely because of its size? - is an outlier, because it's the only state with more than 6% blacks that makes it into the top 11 "least worst" states.

Otherwise, it's pretty clear that if you want peace and prosperity, go pale.

I've found the best state to live in is one where you're making the most money over and above the cost of living with a standard of living that someone enjoys.

Yeah it's really horrible here in Texas also, we lie to pollsters all the time. The almanac list the climate as semi-tropical but that is an average.  Houston:tropical, Lubbock: has a tree. Periodically we get droughts followed by hurricanes followed by Artic storm fronts from Canada jumping the fence. Why can't they send those things to Quebec.

It is a constant fight to keep Californicators off of the controls who want to spend and tax. Everyonce in a while we have to entrap one with our arcane laws (you just can't write a law, the state constitution has to be ammended. If you want to read it, be warned it takes up a couple of shelves in the library) or throw a dead horse into one's swimming pool.  Forget that friendly Texan bull shit. If you are broke down on the side of the rode out in the boonies, we ain't stopping.

It looks like we are not only going to have to secure our Southern border on our own, but also our Western border while we are at it.  Just drive around and head to New York or some other blue paradise.

Because women their are strong, their men good looking, and their children are all above average.

Isn't that the state where they elected a professional wrestler as governor and held a raucous memorial service for a dead senator? They ain't too bright.

jesus, Rhode Island is not that bad at all...  better than probably most of the midwest, and certainly Texas.
