ISIS Has Seized 88 Pounds Of Uranium In Northern Iraq

Tyler Durden's picture

With the mainstream media having moved on in the news cycle to Dow 'almost' 17,000 and the 'Border Crisis' Scandal, it seems The Islamic State (the terrorists formerly known as ISIS) have stepped up their game and come out swinging... by seizing 88 pounds of nuclear material (uranium compounds) from Mosul University. As Iraq's UN Ambassador warned, "these nuclear materials, despite the limited amounts mentioned, "can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction... or in combination with other materials in its terrorist acts."

As Reuters reports, insurgents in Iraq have seized nuclear materials used for scientific research at a university in the country's north, Iraq told the United Nations in a letter appealing for help to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad."

Nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University, Iraq's U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the July 8 letter obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

"Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at the sites that came out of the control of the state," Alhakim wrote, adding that such materials "can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction."

"These nuclear materials, despite the limited amounts mentioned, can enable terrorist groups, with the availability of the required expertise, to use it separate or in combination with other materials in its terrorist acts," said Alhakim.

The US is playing down the threat (for a change)

A U.S. government source familiar with the matter said the materials were not believed to be enriched uranium and therefore would be difficult to use to manufacture into a weapon.

Another U.S. official familiar with security matters said he was unaware of this development raising any alarm among U.S. authorities.

But, ironicaly, it is is Iraq that is most worried about the nukes...

"The Republic of Iraq is notifying the international community of these dangerous developments and asking for help and the needed support to stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad," Alhakim wrote.

...

"It also provides for expanded cooperation between and among states regarding rapid measures to locate and recover stolen or smuggled nuclear material, mitigate any radiological consequences of sabotage, and prevent and combat related offences," according to the IAEA.

*  *  *

Another great addition to ISIS Annual Report and another potentially terrifying prospect for the rest of the world... all this as rockets from Gaza fall around Israel's Dimona nuclear facility also... Should be good for guaranteeing Dow 17,000 tomorrow...

Thinking back, Saddam waited until the nice WTC owners had dual insurance policies on the place before knocking that complex down.

ISIS will most likely nuke an entity that is heavily insured.

Anyone aware of very large insurance policies recently underwritten?

So, since you are not a truther then are you a liar since that is the opposite of truth?

Since when did being for the truth, seeking out the truth, supporting the truth no matter how ugly, become a cause for ridicule?

Did you ever think about that term and the way that the Main Stream Media has corrupted it?

Why is it that the MSM has not just labeled us as liars?  Why will they go out of their way to create such a term?

Because they cannot label us as liars as they also know the truth.

That is why I asked him questions rather than just thrash him. He does not seem to be trolling.

(I know..I know that this is Fight Club and all o' that...Yet he may not be aware of the thrashing attitude which is expected here.)

So I am making an attempt to reason with him.

Hopefully he is thinking.

The invasion of Iraq, namned "Iraqi Freedom" and widely supported by Americans across the country went from being a highly rated CNN Mini Series, to an occupation show that Americans grew tired of in search for newer programing. By the time American troops left, many Americans didn't even know we had troops there. The war was sold as the Patriotic Test of your Americanhood. Support attacking Iraq and you were a good American, a true Patriot, oppose the invasion and you were a liberal, a communist and a traitor to all American stood for, like freedom and free markets. Who can forget to forests of American flag and yellow ribbons. This really was America at its very best.

Since the "Mission was Accomplished", Iraq has slowly been invaded by Jihad. America's Syrian Proxy war required American support for Sunni Jihad, just the floks we fought in the Iraq occupation. Once well paid, well armed and well trained, mostly by Saudi Arabia and America, these new allies of ours invaded Iraq. And now we have the present situation there.

No American from Bush on down through the Pentagon, Congress, State department, CIA or others have ever been held to account for the money and the lives that have proven to have been spent for nothing. Just seems like defense contractors made trillions and we the people took it up the ass. Anyone with an alternative Patriotic take on the Iraq invasion is welcome to prove me wrong.

The US used more than 88 pounds of depleted uranium in Iraq. What about the US soldiers exposed?

http://rt.com/news/iraq-depleted-uranium-health-394/

Although army training manuals were written in the 1980s to warn tank
crews and commanders of the dangers associated with DU rounds,
the Pentagon failed to warn Gulf War troops of the dangers.
The Defense Department did circulate a memo to Gulf War
commanders that contained three key points: any vehicle
or system struck by a DU penetrator can be assumed to be
contaminated; personnel should avoid entering contaminated
areas; and, if troops must enter contaminated areas, they
should wear protective clothing. Unfortunately, this memo
was written on March 7, 1991, eight days after the firing
of weapons ceased in the Persian Gulf.

Reminds me of the Iraq war when we (Boosh) riddled the ministry of state security (Iraq FBI) with hundreds or thousands of DU A10 rounds, it was a treasure trove of valuable intelligence and we destroyed it for some strange reason.

Anyway the A10 cannon holds 1350 rounds of DU, about a pound each, one trigger burst is 88 pounds.

This was just reported - meaning it probably happened a number of days ago and is finally being reported. I have been wondering why the US response to the ISIS attacks has been so weak -- now we may know why. Bring in too much airpower or drone attacks and you give ISIS motivation to retaliate. And unlike how the US and Iraqi governments handled the uranium, I am sure that ISIS is keeping it well hidden and well protected.

This story sounds unreal, but it is from Reuters report. The story is specific at 40 kilograms, but unspecific as to what enrichment, or as to why a Iraq university would have such a presumably radioactive material. I am a physicist and my US university had no microscopic ammount of enriched uranium. Was this left over from Sadam? If so then Bush is exonorated about weapons of mass distruction. Either way this story sounds unreal.

So who gave an Iraqi university 40 kilograms of radioactive material? For what reason? Is this part of Saddam's famous WMD cache? Maybe Bush and Cheney will be vindicated after all! Very few universities even in Europe and in the US would have that much radioactive material laying around. The idiots at the State Department are right for once in that you can't make a nuclear bomb with that (assuming it isn't weapons grade material) but they can certainly make several big dirty bombs from this cache. It is interesting that the US State Department already knew they couldn't make a bomb with the material before anyone described what kind of material it is!

If it is just yellow cake, uranium as it is mined then it is not much danger. It has to highly purified  to useful as nuclear fuel and that requires sophisticated centrifuges.

So 88 pounds of what type of uranium?

42kg of standard mined uranium would  be useless for most things.

The enriched unranium is bouncing around in the back of one of those brand-new Toyota Tundra TRD Extended Cabs with All Wheel Drive. Just point your sattelites at the trucks and find the one with the bellied tires, or rides a little low in back.

I know! You could put in a full service gasoline station like in the olden times. When ISIS comes into gas up, "ding ding" goes the driveway signal, you, dressed in an attendant outfit with a smart cap, and a smile on your face, discreetly check their truck with your Mr. Radiation Detector. Also, Junior Sleuth, check to see which guys are bleeding out of their eyes and puking hummus.

"W88" is the name of one of the standard nuclear warheads used on the MIRV missiles. They are the cute conical thingys, three or more to each missile, that can hit independent targets. The article does not touch on the most important issue - what is the material stolen and is it dangerous or not.

It's useless. Unrefined uranium is not all that radioactive and useless in a dirty bomb. It is, however, a heavy metal poison, but so is lead, and it is much more abundant and easier to obtain.

This just means the US military is incompetent. Close the Pentagon. Move everything and everyone to the Middle East. We don't need generals carrying a piece of paper from one side of the Pentagon to the other. For the money the US spends on defense, what do we get in return? Delist all defense stocks from Wall Street. If Iraq has a stock exchange, that's where defense stocks trade, and no place else on Planet Earth.

A few suicide bombers with packages of radioactive dust covering the explosives and you have one heck of an effective dirty bomb.

Thu, 07/10/2014 - 09:26 | 4942910 Rhino
Rhino's picture

yes but this is not that. 1) That would be easily detected and you'd need a great degree of sheilding so you don't die before you could carry out the attack. 2) You'd need enriched Uranium U238 for it to be unstable enough to actually be a dirty bomb. If this is just U235, which i think it is because i doubt these fools are using NBC suits, it wouldn't be effective. U235 is only dangerous if it's inhaled or ingested. You can wear nitrile gloves and be just fine holding it. U238 requires a lot more shielding. It's not something you could just toss in a breifcase.

A dirty bomb requires enriched Uranium U238 or other nuclear bomb grade material. The difference is just that you don't have the sophistication to fire off the chain reaction, so you just use the explosive to cover a large area with highly radioactive material. U235 would not work.

alright calm down. We used to use Uranium in pottery to give it a nice bright yellow color. U235 may be carcinogenic, but it's not something you'd put in a dirty bomb. After all, you just need to wear nitril gloves to handle it safely, no NBC suit necessary. Do you really think terrorists would waste their time and resources to build a bomb that might makes people sick over the period of several years? A sickness that could be easily treated if people catch it early, which they most certainly would because we'd know right away that those people were exposed.

Consider also the source. The government of iraq is desparate. They are loosing their grip on the country. Doesn't it seem likely that they'd pull the same fear mongering WMD lie that was used to get us in there the first time?

Don't believe everything the media tells you and especially take whatever a desparate government diplomat says with a large grain of salt. They don't give a damn about the international community. They aren't informing us for our protection. They are trying to convince us to go back and save their skins.

You missed the point. "Radioactive material" is now missing. All you need is to find some nut-case Islamist, give him some slightly radioactive material that you have told him is highly radioactive material from the rag head university and instant panic when he sets it off with a mild explosive in some venue like the Boston Marathon.
