In one of the most uncomfortable (and must-see) interviews, UK Channel 4's John Snow 'discusses' Israel's bombing raids and policies towards Hamas with Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev. The interview starts with a punch, "How does killing children on a beach contribute to your purpose of protecting Israeli civilians?" Regev ducks and weaves from question to question, flummoxed when Snow jabs, "if you couldn't tell these were 4 young Palestinian children playing football on a Gaza beach, you need better equipment," only to be slammed towards the end with, "why not be brave and talk directly to Hamas? You haven't got the courage." Not the kind of interview one is likely to see on US TV.

I think the fig leaf is a relatively recent invention in an otherwise long and profit driven private history. In Angola, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Rhodesia and countless other places the PMC's have waged wars to advance both the bottom line and their sovereign masters' interests without that veil of legitimacy and most people simply looked the other way.

Couldn't have said it better. Our military is twice as large as it needs to be. The only time a foreign national should see a US soldier is when that soldier is about to kill them. No more military bases, ships in port, etc. And no more shipping arms to any other country, it's not what we should be about.
No one is a bigger critic of Israel's government than me, but Hamas should have accepted the ceasefire. The pro-Israel crowd isn't all wrong all the time, and Hamas seems to care little about the suffering of its own people.
They should have taken the ceasefire and appealed to the UN and Arab League for medical supplies, and some sort of peacekeeping force. But they prefer to watch hundreds of Palestinians, men, women, and children die so they can launch ineffective, but terrorizing rockets at Israeli civilians.
Israel deserves most of the blame, and most of the criticism it gets, but that doesn't mean Hamas is in the right. Launching rockets at civilians is a war crime, too.

1. No, there’s no justification to make collective punishments (by the way, a preferred technique used by the Germans in occupied territories during WWII). The rule of law (should) applies – also in times of war. Punishment should follow a sentence/verdict/ruling. Otherwise you give the state the ability to kill, maim and rape with impunity
2. No, it’s not a rational, sensible or moral/ethical response to counter hate with hate or violence with violence. The spiral of violence will only be sustained, prolonged and reinforced. The violence and the hate that follows can be used by the powerful – to obscure the real f*cking taking place
3. No, I would not think that the American nation (or Israeli or any other Western nation – or most other nations) care about their own people (unless they're filthy wealthy and well-connected). Circa 1 billion in subsidized material (shit like old Army sweatshirts, boots, old m-16s and on an on), all US manufacured, which is would already be an internal US issue. Anyhow, best case scenario (prime minister's office and internal security also throw in some of their alloted budget to defense), we're talking about %5 of the Israeli defense budget. In fact Israel does the US a favor by accepting that money because it's then obligated to share tech with the MIC (grumann, lockheed martin etc.) that otherwise would've been very hard to come by. Israel as the highest ratio of engineers per capita in the world. Take any scientific field and you'll see Hebrews prominently positioned.
