Where The Happiest Americans Are (And Are Not)

Tyler Durden's picture

On an income-adjusted basis, New Yorkers are the most miserable Americans while citizens of Lafayette, LA are the happiest. As MarketWatch reports, based on a Harvard study which 'adjusts' for age, sex, race, income and other factors, the following map indicates where the happiest Americans are (blue/green) and are not (red).

The happiest five cities are all in Louisiana, with Lafayette taking the crown (Louisiana is also the happiest state). The unhappiest cities, after New York City, are St. Joseph, Miss.; South Bend, Ind.; Erie, Penn.; and the Evansville, Ind.-Henderson, Ky. area.

Locate yourself, locate where you might prefer to live.

Print this map out. Fold it tightly. Flush it down the toilet.

                     Happy now?

I know when I used to drive over the bridge at Blythe headed east and finally cleared the Idiot Reservation, the air cleaned up, the sky was  a bluer shade of blue and the birds began to sing.

That's what escaping repression can bring to one's soul...from there it's a pretty nice drive until you see the lights of Phoenix.

Lafayette Louisiana, home of the Ragin Cajun's, where people live life to the fullest. Family comes first & there is always a reason for a party with family & good friends.

You know what they say about Louisiana, we are either under water or under indictment!

I saw another study that concluded that Idaho and Wyoming had the most Neo-Nazi hate group whack-jobs.  I reckon they are happy whack-jobs.

Maybe, but it could be that areas like NYC have a much greater number of Nazi whack jobs.  Except in NYC they wear police costumes and are on the government payroll.  (Not saying the Idaho cops are not Nazis, there are just much fewer of them).

in any rural area on the that map all you see is 'happy' until you see a light patch which is an indication of people living in cities.

turns out that city dwellers are fucking miserable and everyone living in poor rural areas is happy!!!!!!!

Sorry I'm late to the party on this topic. I was helping friends shuttle for their overnight rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Flathead river---located in truly wild bit of river bottom sandwiched between Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex :) :)

After helping with the shuttle, I took a drive up the North Fork of the Flathead which is a "National Scenic River". I cruised on back home after a delicious cinamon bun from the Polebridge Mercantile in Polebridge MT. "The Merc" as we call it is on the National Register of Historic Places. My kind of place--Dirt roads and No cell service!

Yeeehawwww

And so I can affirm that, relatrively speaking, Montana  is a pretty happy place. So do come visit us, spend your money--and then go the fuck back home to your "red" unhappy state :)

People in Seattle seem pretty happy to me - the red is surprising.  One has to wonder what the newly legal weed will do for those folks who get a little depressed by all the rain.

I know a lot of non-tech multi-generational people in seattle/king county are they are very unhappy with the cost of living inflation. The schism that is taking place in the bay is happening here but at a slower pace.

Certainly Seattle's minimum wage hike to $15.00/hr should turn that all that "red" to "blue"!

I had the (mis)fortune of spending too much time in Leesville, LA (not far from Lafayette) in my Army days.  For the uninitiated it's the obligatory shithole just outside Fort Polk which is one of the most godawful training centers in Uncle Sam's inventory.  The locals never struck me as particularly happy - or endowed with great dental service providers - but they sure knew how to fight.  We tended to get rowdy on our R&Rs, and normally we came out on top whenever some townies got out of line with us, but Leesville was the only town where we almost always got our collective teeth kicked in.

This would be a GREAT (study/Chart ) if it showed who was awake. You know those who researched what was going on, not those who work, if they have a job, then go home and turn on the Boob Tube News, or some reality show.

Well, in the cities (where folks appear to be least happy) you also have large concentrations of people feeding at the public trough. Maybe THAT'S why the other working people as so UNHAPPY.

Regarding LA-what's not to be happy about? They've got Cajun food and Zydeco music-EEEEYAAAH!
