Company In Which Joe Biden's Son Is Director Prepares To Drill Shale Gas In East Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

Recall what we said earlier today: the proxy Ukraine war just like that in Syria preceding it, "is all about energy."

Recall also the following chart showing Ukraine's shale gas deposits, keeping in mind that the Dnieper-Donets basin which lies in the hotly contested eastern part of the nation and where as everyone knows by now a bloody civil war is raging, is the major oil and gas producing region of Ukraine accounting for approximately 90 per cent of Ukrainian production and according to EIA may have 42 tcf of shale gas resources technically recoverable from 197 tcf of risked shale gas in place.

Finally, recall our story from May that Joe Biden's son, Hunter, just joined the board of the largest Ukraine gas producer Burisma Holdings. From the press release:

R. Hunter Biden will be in charge of the Holdings’ legal unit and will provide support for the Company among international organizations. On his new appointment, he commented: “Burisma’s track record of innovations and industry leadership in the field of natural gas means that it can be a strong driver of a strong economy in Ukraine. As a new member of the Board, I believe that my assistance in consulting the Company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine.”

R. Hunter Biden is also a well-known public figure. He is chairman of the Board of the World Food Programme U.S.A., together with the world’s largest humanitarian organization, the United Nations World Food Programme. In this capacity he offers assistance to the poor in developing countries, fighting hunger and poverty, and helping to provide food and education to 300 million malnourished children around the world.

Company Background:

Burisma Holdings is a privately owned oil and gas company with assets in Ukraine and operating in the energy market since 2002. To date, the company holds a portfolio with permits to develop fields in the Dnieper-Donets, the Carpathian and the Azov-Kuban basins. In 2013, the daily gas production grew steadily and at year-end amounted to 11.6 thousand BOE (barrels of oil equivalent – incl. gas, condensate and crude oil), or 1.8 million m3 of natural gas. The company sells these volumes in the domestic market through traders, as well as directly to final consumers.

Now put it all together and what happens next should be rather clear.

* * *

Still confused? It's very simple, really.

In a nutshell Ukraine (or rather its puppetmasters) has decided to let no crisis (staged or otherwise) or rather civil war, go to waste, and while the fighting rages all around, Ukrainian troopers are helping to install shale gas production equipment near the east Ukrainian town of Slavyansk, which was bombed and shelled for the three preceding months, according to local residents cited by Itar Tass. The reason for the scramble? Under peacetime, the process was expected to take many years, during which Europe would be under the energy dictatorship of Putin. But throw in some civil war and few will notice let alone care that a process which was expected to take nearly a decade if not longer while dealing with broad popular objections to fracking, may instead be completed in months!

Civilians protected by Ukrainian army are getting ready to install drilling rigs. More equipment is being brought in,” they said, adding that the military are encircling the future extraction area.

The people of Slavyansk, which is located in the heart of the Yzovka shale gas field, staged numerous protest actions in the past against its development. They even wanted to call in a referendum on that subject. Environmentalists are particularly concerned with the consequences of hydrofracing, a method used for shale gas extraction, because it implies the use of extremely toxic chemical agents which can poison not only subsoil waters but also the atmosphere. Experts claim that not a single country in the world has invented a method of utilization of harmful toxic agents in the process of development of shale gas deposits.

Countries like the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and France have given up plans to develop shale gas deposits in their territories.

Not only them but also all-important Germany, which two weeks ago announced it would halt shale-gas drilling for the next seven years over groundwater pollution concerns.

Which clearly makes Ukraine, potentially the last place with massive shale gas deposits and no drilling ban, quite valuable to those who want to develop a major source of shale gas, one which reduces Europe's reliance on Russian gas even more, yet one whose future depends on one simple question: who controls East Ukraine?

Because what better way to accelerate "next steps" than to start drilling for gas in the middle of the Donetsk republic as a civil war is waging in all directions, and where public mood has shifted decidedly against the local "separatists" in the aftermath of the MH-17 tragedy.

The punchline: who will develop the gas field in conjunction with Shell (jointly owned by the Netherlands and the UK: the two countries that loathe Putin the most in the aftermath of the MH-17 disaster) which in May 2012 announced a tender for the right to develop the Yuzovka shale gas deposit?

Burisma, Ukraine’s oil and gas production holdings, also has the right to develop the shale gas fields in the Dnieper-Donetsk basin of Eastern Ukraine. The same Burisma where R. Hunter Biden, Joseph's son, was appointed a director two months ago.

I guess Hunter wants to Fracken them ( East Ukranians) and Fcuk them. Take their shale oil, shove Halleyburtons chemicals inside their soil  and give them unusable land when they withdraw.

That would be Joe's contribution to the American cause  whhile he enriches himself.

One has to see how Hunter send the oil to his buyers. Those gas pipelines that exist must continue to exist. Once Russian gas/oil stops the Russians will end the pipelines too

Somebody wrote that Shell had brokered deals with the new government in Kiev that included that people in East Ukraine could be ex-appropriated from their land. First people are driven from their land -thousands have fled the area- and then their land is taken. Depopulation and ethnic cleansing is going on but no one in the West is shouting 'atrocity, atrocity'. After all, they are only Russian beasts, all of them. When oil companies are done with it then the area and drinking water will be polluted with chemicals. Win-win vs. lose-lose.

As an American living permanently in Ukraine since 2009:

1.) The energy deposits (gas and oil) in Ukraine were previously controlled by Ukrainian OLIGARCHS, all of whom became billionaires by seizing formerly state-owned assets by paying off the Kiev politicians. That is how Burisma Holdings gained "energy rights" in eastern Ukraine. These same oligarchs are still in power in Ukraine - they simply paid off a new group of Kiev politicians. That is how Ukraine has worked since its independence. And that is why MOST Ukrainians hate the government in Kiev - whether of former presidents Leonid Kravchuk, Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, Viktor Yanukovych, Oleksandr Turchynov or currently Petro Poroshenko. They are all viewed as CORRUPT-TO-THE-CORE.

2.) The only difference now is that the West will get a share of the profits, with R. Hunter Biden as their front man.The people here FEAR that other state-owned assets will soon be sold off, such as the major port facilities (e.g., Odessa), major tracts of farm land, and the eastern Ukraine's mining and manufacturing infrastructure

3.) Fracking in the U.S. has proved to be VERY EXPENSIVE, costing 3 units of energy for every 1 unit of gas recovered. The fracked areas run out of recoverable gas very quickly, often after only a few months. So, the companies simply take the quick profits and leave behind poisoned the land and water - and let the government assume the "reclamation" costs.

4.) Should R. Hunter Biden ever personally visit Ukraine, I will gladly volunteer to SHOOT that son-of-a-bitch in the head.

The people here do NOT want to become the next Greece!

^^ that's how it worked in Russia as well when I lived there. In Russia the oligarchs were corrupt almost mafia-types for the most part and had to do things the hard way to get where they were. Khodarkovsky was known as one of the more brutal of them. These guys stole the state asssets then took all the money out of the country so that playbook is well known by many of the average citizens and it was a terrible consequence for both Russia and Ukraine. Of course, to the US and WSJ guys like Khodorkovsky et al are bastions of capitalism!! But to the average Russian or Ukrainian citizen they are thieves and thugs who stole billions and prevented growth for the masses.

Would say that Poroshenko (Willy Wonka) is as corrupt as the rest of them from what I hear. He's playing up the EU membership card hard (go to the airport in Kiev and you'll see endless billboards promoting EU membership and partnership - where did we see that last? Oh yeah in Georgia! Look how that turned out).

Whoever ends up winng, one thing is for sure..the oligarchs will still be in power to a large extent and corruption will continue. Hell they haven't had much luck getting rid of the corruption in new EU member states like Bulgaria and Romania (and much of the EU aid there has dried up) so why the hell would Ukraine be a better situation?

Plenty of blame to go around here in Ukraine now but the US and EU fomenting this whole 'revolution' was a terrible idea and the common people are paying the price here.

Re the fracking, as much as I love new energy and want to wean ourselves off Saudi crude, I think with the way it's done and all the stories about groundwater contamination, earthquakes in Oklahoma etc. it's just another way for big business to screw the little guy. I'd love to trust Big Oil and think they aren't lying to us but deep down I think they are, just like the rest of Big Business in America. Those guys would sell their soul to the Devil and lobby Washington ad infinitum to make an extra buck.

Have to add 'what must not be said' but guess the religion of said oligarchs in both Ukraine and Russia :) Nothing to see here though....move along!

the only difference is, that MSM does not report about it, to contrary, covers the full scale corruption in your coountry.

Look at your presidents, who must have a budget of nearly one billion to get ellected; who contributes?

every senator needs 20 million budget

every congresmember need 10 million.

who pays those contributions?

is there any oligarchy in US?

If for some reason you accidently introduce air (or oxygen) into a gas well bore a potentially catastrophic downhole expolsion can occur which, of course, wrecks the well.

The same goes with the gas gathering system.

I'm just saying...

People need to know the hazards of introducing air into gas processing equipment.

They would need to get a great many wells done and on-line to provie a reasonable sort of flow and then they need to keep producing new wells as each well's rate of flow drops off fairly quickly after about a year.

And usually this is how they operate, by creating in the end hundreds/thousands of wells, each with a limited amount of economic gas and oil but together make up a large amount. But only temporary.

Whilst fracked wells in volume produce a nice little proft for major oil companies it is conventional oil and gas they want and would be looking for.

I doubt that the well fracking for energy independance is anything to do with the current crisis, it doesn't work. The motive maybe an ecnomic one for oil companies, they want to make money regardless of Russia or no Russia. Or they expect there to be large conventional oil/gas reserves in the area.

The issue for Russia and the US however is all about growth and the boxing in of Russia (and China). This we know has been a US desire for a long time. And now the USA realise that they are at their economic weakest for a very long time and that Russia and China loom as serious threats to their hegomony.

The US is in its desperate stage because of the economy and USD and may go to supidly dangerous extremes to get out of their quicksand. Have not doubt that they would have no qualms in shooting down a commercal airliner to blame Russia and bring NATO into Ukraine with their own military might, in order to attain their military strategic plans on Russia.

The thing is nowdays is that most people all over the world would not be surprised if the USA was caught out in some false flag event such as MH17 - the war on terror revealed a lot about the US to the world and to Europeane allies.

The long term geopolitics will have China very worried having seen the way in which the US foments civil strife in country after country.

China's big worry is its large and diverse country and huge population and that the US will try and foment rebellion from within and try and fragment China aka USSR. This a perenial worry for China even without the US / Japan troublemaking.

China will  not wait around for the US to make trouble in China through various means .. their defence against that will be in the end to remove the USD as a resereve currency. And the hoarding of gold may be a part of that.

If things get willing in the Ukraine you may see China help out Russia/East Ukraine in some way. Either directly or by causing the US major headaches in some other part of the world.

If the US does not desist in the Ukraine then see China Russia and others become even closer.

Right, it's all about delivering a "strong economy for Ukraine", where the population will face austerity and massive debt so that the Western interests who control their oil and gas reserves help them out. What a bunch of shit.

This is more pervasive than many are aware here, where Senators and other well connected persons are involved with family. Most of this goes back to the Trans-Caspian pipeline and is something I have spent nearly a decade researching. I might try to submit a guest post in the near future if Tyler(s) would be willing. I've written about this a bit elsewhere and had a tip come in that connected many dots.

"Some reading your comment might think that that since Angus King owned Independence Wind, he has nothing to do with First Wind. But he does. At the very least, we know that his son, Angus King III heads up mergers & acquisitions at First Wind. Just google "Angus King" First Wind.

King's son also had been Special Assistant to the White House Chief of Staff from 1995-97 in the Clinton administration, i.e., Leon Panetta, who went on to head the CIA and the Dept of Defense under Obama."

Fighter bombers attacking civilian targets in Eastern Ukraine, flying with Ukrainian Air Force markings, have been traced to air bases in Romania, Moldova and Azerbaijan, armed and some perhaps piloted by Poles and even Israelis.

Canadian journalist, Geoffrey West, working with online “plane spotting” groups has identified combat aircraft flying “packages” over Ukrainian air space as taking off from NATO and other facilities.

you anti-fracktards are willing useful idiots of soviet propoganda.

that is all.

the anti-fracking movement, is a typical propoganda movement supported by various competing energy production concerns.

the price the u.s. pays for being an open society, unlike russia, is that we are open to russian and other gas giant propoganda, but they are not open to ours.

try starting a 'fracktivism' movement in russia, and see where that gets you....

MH17 Chameleon: Operation Rapid Trident II

The announcement of U.S. BREEZE and RAPID TRIDENT II military maneuvers came on May 21, 2014 by Vice President Joe Biden’s office. Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, is a newly-named director of the Ukrainian natural gas and oil company Burisma Holdings, Ltd., owned by Ihor Kolomoisky, the Ukrainian-Israeli mafia oligarch, who is known as the «Chameleon». Kolomoisky has raised his own mercenary army, complete with the BUK missiles allegedly used in the shootdown of MH-17. Kolomoisky, the Governor of Dnipropetrovsk oblast in eastern Ukraine, has threatened terrorist attacks against Russian-speaking officials in eastern Ukraine, including assassinations.

No conflict here please just move along!   (sarcasm)

Mommas in America were discouraged in a song many years ago from letting their children grow up to be cowboys, it appears to have been a reasonable decision. Today after viewing the lifestyles associated with many career paths, politics and the route of so called "public service" seems to offer much potential.

A career in politics can grant you a lifestyle where you, and oftentimes your family will get to rub elbows with the ultra wealthy and the country's most powerful titans of business and industry. This career choice also has the benefit of sheltering you, and extending legal protection that covers you from the responsibilities of your actions. Flying about in private planes politicians are rewarded with generous pensions and superior healthcare benefits far outside the reach of the average citizen. More on this subject below.

It was Vice President Joe Biden who announced in late 2009 that Fisker would reopen a shuttered former General Motors factory in Wilmington, Del., to produce plug-in, electric hybrid vehicles. What does Joe Biden have to do with Fisker Automotive? On the surface, the answer would seem to be nothing at all, or at least it did until the Biden himself revealed the startup automaker's plans to introduce a new series of electric vehicles under the Project Nina banner. Not only that, Fisker just so happens to have decided to build cars in Bidin's home state.

Coincidence? Fisker has denied that any political influence was used to obtain the loan or in negotiations over its terms, according to Russel Datz spokeman for Fisker, coincidence is exactly what it is, a good number of reasons exist to choose the former GM plant in Wilmington, Deleware, and the fact that it's Biden's home state is not one of them. Claymont, Deleware  home of Biden is roughly eight and a half miles from Wilmington. More on the Fisker implosion in the article below.

"fund of hedge funds run by two members of Vice President Joe Biden's family was marketed exclusively by companies controlled by Texas financier R. Allen Stanford, who is facing Securities and Exchange Commission accusations of engaging in an $8 billion fraud.

The $50 million fund was jointly branded between the Bidens' Paradigm Global Advisors LLC and a Stanford Financial Group entity and was known as the Paradigm Stanford Capital Management Core Alternative Fund. Stanford-related companies marketed the fund to investors and also invested about $2.7 million of their own money in the fund, according to a lawyer for Paradigm. Paradigm Global Advisors is owned through a holding company by the vice president's son, Hunter, and Joe Biden's brother, James."
