Ebola Victim On The Run In West Africa Capital
It's gone from bad (Mapping Africa's "Totally Out Of Control" Ebola Epidemic) to worse, (Head Doctor Fighting Africa's "Out Of Control" Ebola Epidemic Contracts The Virus), to much worse (Liberian Man Tested For Ebola In World's Fourth Most Populous City), to having run out of comparaitves - although we are leery of using a superlative just yet as we have a feeling Africa's Ebola's epidemic will deteriorate before it gets better. But the latest news is bad enough: as Reuters reported moments ago, Sierra Leone officials appealed for help on Friday to trace the first known resident in the capital with Ebola whose family forcibly removed her from a Freetown hospital after testing positive for the deadly disease.
How big is Sierra Leone's capital Freetown: just around 1 million inhabitants, so yes, things are suddenly very much uncontained.

Radio stations in Freetown broadcast the appeal on Friday to locate a woman who tested positive for the disease that has killed 660 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since an outbreak was first identified in February.
"Saudatu Koroma of 25 Old Railway Line, Brima Lane, Wellington," the announcement said. "She is a positive case and her being out there is a risk to all. We need the public to help us locate her."
Koroma, 32, a resident of the densely populated Wellington neighborhood, had been admitted to an isolation ward while blood samples were tested for the virus, Health ministry spokesman Sidi Yahya Tunis. The results came back on Thursday.
"The family of the patient stormed the hospital and forcefully removed her and took her away," Tunis said. "We are searching for her."
What is just as bad is that even without this latest shocking development, the death toll from the epidemic has already hit 660 according to the WHO, cited by AFP.
And now we await news out of the world's fourth largest city, Nigeria's capital Lagos, where a man collapsed at the airport and is now being tested whether he too had Ebola, and we are confused how the market is not trading at fresh all time highs following what is now a recreation of the plot of the movie Outbreak. Just consider how much GDP was created or not destroyed there.

And to the poster who asked if I would chance it, no I would not put myself in proximity to potential carriers despite the fact/chance (virii can always mutate) that during the incubation stage they are not contagious. If you were observant, you would have noticed that comments which are in response to another comment are indented slightly and placed below the comment it was in reply to. My initial comment was based on someone claiming that people were spreading Ebola for several weeks before showing their symptoms. I made the comment that the "consensus" based on previous Ebola outbreaks was that it could not be spread during the incubation stage, only when they were showing symptoms. It had not one fuck to do with the original article, my comment was based entirely on another person's comment. Another person then followed up saying that neither the WHO nor Wikipedia stated that it could not be spread during the incubation stage. I then provided information directly from the WHO site which stated in their Ebola vaccine FAQ that to their knowledge it can not be spread during the incubation stage.
Where do you idiots with no reading comprehension come from? Have I laid out the course of events clearly enough for you to comprehend at this point?

The incubation period is 4-6 days (on average!!!), meaning someone infected has that period of time (on average!!! Could be up to 3 weeks) to infect others while not presenting symptoms. In a large population, 'burn out' may not matter as much as you think as there are unknowns such as mutation(s). Huge unknown, viruses can mutate fairly quickly (esp. in large populations)...Thought you read 'The Hot Zone', maybe read some non-fiction for deeper info/knowledge...

That's how it usually works. Virus seem locked into a population until they suddenly learn a new trick. Bird Flu is called that because it was first noticed in birds, then suddenly they found it in humans. Same for Swine Flu. It's important to note that both come to us courtesy of Asian countries where people still live and work in close proximity to infected animals. With that much casual contact it's only a matter of time until the virus finds a way to jump animal->human and infect individual people. Once it learns that trick it's only a matter of time before the same strain finds a way to move human->human, and suddenly you have a very serious epidemic. A new virus, something no human is immune to, simply runs rampant tying up the medical system, fomenting chaos, scattering people in terror of it which of course only makes the situation worse. When you hear about national health organizations mobilizing against a feared "X-flu" outbreak you can snicker all you want, but what they are worried about is just what I've described. It really is very dire.
I get the sense with this latest outbreak in Africa that ebola is starting to break out of the countryside. That's a "trick" of the kind I refer to above. It might some day learn some other "tricks" like how to become aerosolized, spreading via sneezes and coughs. Then we have something just as bad or worse than hemorrhagic smallpox ever tried to be, and therefore a very very serious threat.
Consider it only a matter of time.

There was arecent guess on the Keiser Report that talked about viruses and bacteria and how they relate to modern capitalism. Oil discoveries in Kenya are part of a string of hydrocarbon finds in the east African region that are drawing in energy firms and could soon make the area a significant exporter.
Kenya, like other nations sitting on new discoveries such as Uganda and Tanzania, has out-of-date laws governing the industry and needs to develop skills to handle new contracts and other issues required to build the industry.

Major water districts in California are quietly considering using property taxes -- and possibly raising them without a vote of the public -- to help fund Gov. Jerry Brown's $25 billion plan to build two massive tunnels through the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
Most property tax hikes require a two-thirds vote, as required under California's landmark Proposition 13, which voters passed in 1978. But the water agencies contend they are not bound by that requirement.
So now we have State Governments raising property taxes without a vote...we truly are lost as a Country.
