Following First Ebola Death Nigeria "On Red Alert", Deploys Specialists To Airports For Containment

Tyler Durden's picture

Shortly after our report yesterday that the Liberian man suspected of carrying the Ebola virus has died while quarantined in Nigeria, the local health ministry confirmed that he was indeed the first confirmed Ebola death in the Nigerian city of Lagos, which with a population of roughly 20 million, is the largest city in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. The victim, who worked for the Liberian government, collapsed at Lagos international airport after arriving on a flight from Monrovia via the Togolese capital Lome on Tuesday, according to the Nigerian government. And now the "red alert" scramble begins in Nigeria, with a population fo 170 million, to isolate who else the deceased may have come in contact with.

Citing the health ministry AFP reports that he did not come into contact with the public in Lagos other than health workers before being isolated at the hospital, although it is not quite clear just how Nigeria made that conclusion so rapidly. Perhaps it too has seen YouTube clips confirming its own line of propaganda beyond any doubt?

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday that efforts were being made to track down people the victim may have come into contact with on his journey from the Liberian capital.

"Contact tracing under way -- Liberia, Nigeria, Togo. WHO deployed staff to Nigeria to help w/ this & safe handling of remains," the global health body's African region said on its Twitter account @WHOAFRO.

Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu had previously said all passengers who travelled with the victim on the Togo-based carrier ASKY from Lome had been traced.

But in case this latest instance of propaganda meant to avoid a panic ends up being merely the latest lie, Nigeria is already preparing for plan B: "an emergency operations centre has been set up, coordinated by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (CDC), and all hospitals have been equipped to handle emergencies and suspected cases, the minister added."

And while borders have not yet been closed, health specialists have been deployed to all sea ports and international airports to identify any passengers displaying symptoms associated with Ebola.

Needless to say, while Nigeria may hope that a countrywide quarantine is possible and could well be the next step, it would merely make the resulting panic from an epidemic that has claimed nearly 700 people far worse.

In Lagos, Yewande Adeshina, the special adviser on public health to the Lagos State governor, said: "We have taken delivery of 30 personal protective equipment (sets) from the federal ministry of health and they have promised to give an additional 220 for our medical personnel to protect them from any risks... "We are also reaching out to private clinics, hospitals and health facilities in the state to promptly report any suspected case to the authorities."

Information Minister Labaran Maku said a radio and television public awareness campaign about Ebola has been running for several months on state media and would continue. Spread by close contact with an infected person through bodily fluids such as sweat, blood and tissue, it can fell victims within days, causing severe fever and muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea -- and in some cases, organ failure and unstoppable bleeding.

Ebola's arrival in Lagos has prompted fears of its spread, since the overcrowded megacity is a regional and international transport hub and a base for many foreign multinationals with offices in Africa's largest economy.

As noted above, at this point now that the worst outcome has been confirmed it is all about containment:

WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said tracing people who have been in contact with an infected person was key in both rural and urban areas, although that may prove more complicated in cities.

"When there is an outbreak, it is important to see whom the people have been in contact with and follow them for 21 days," he said by phone from Sierra Leone.

One of Britain's leading virologists said while Ebola's arrival in Lagos was "certainly not welcome", Lagos' more developed public health care infrastructure and accessible population compared to affected rural areas could work in its favour.

"The important thing to remember is that Ebola is not a virus that transmits easily, for example, by respiratory droplets. There has to be very close or physical contact," Professor Ian Jones told AFP in an email exchange.

"If this is prevented the outbreak can be stopped in its tracks. In this regard the authorities' statement that all contacts have been traced and quarantined is very reassuring," said Jones, from the University of Reading, west of London.

Indeed, "authorities' statements" that "everything is contained" are taking place with increasing regulatory in the past decade. Sadly, virtually every time they end up being a lie. Hopefully this time it's different.

In the meantime, we wonder just how the government of Sierra Leone will spin its own Ebola crisis, following the report from yesterday that an Ebola patient was broken out of hospital by her family and is now loose in the city of one million.

Finally, here is the latest summary of Ebola deaths and cases in West Africa from the WHO:

You cannot conclude anything other than the southern invasion is a calculated, intentional plan by Backdoor Barry's bosses to launch a biological warfare attack on the United States.

There is simply no other explanation.

Your country is under Attack.  The attack is being orchestrated by the so-called president of the United States.

Unless some Authority immediately acts to remove the current Administration thru legal means, America is Doomed.

At this juncture, the utter failure of the US Armed Forces to uphold their Oath is the worst betrayal of America since Benedict Arnold.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff have abandoned their own country to Ruin.

He arrived on a flight from Monrovia. How does the Nigerian government figure he was only exposed to medical workers? Was he the only passenger on that flight?

That's exactly that kind of statement by any government that makes people see all governments as just a bunch of liars.

I'll bet the government reps are getting their own families out of Lagos, right now all the while saying that everything is ok.

Did he get it in Monrovia? Or elsewhere? I don't remember reading about Ebola in Monrovia.

I would appreciate your opinion on this.

An airborne disease is any disease that is caused by pathogens and transmitted through the air.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airborne_disease

A drop or droplet is a small column of liquid, bounded completely or almost completely by free surfaces.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_(liquid)

When vomiting and one of the symptoms of ebola is vomiting, that person relates a droplet. It is small amount of liquid. Than in the case of aircraft that droplet enters in to airplane ventilation system

http://www.pall.com/images/Aerospace-Defense-Marine/how_cabin_air_system...

And there was multiple incidents of medical personnel getting infected that were using protective gear. That would indicate that you can get infected with out physical contact with infected person.

Or, let me rephrase it. Viruses that are not airborne are transfers with blood or sperm (bodily liquid's). HIV is one of the examples.

Ebola is transfers to medical personnel in full protective equipment. That would indicate that this level of protection is not enough

https://followtheoutbreak.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/140322_ebola-archi...

and this is level of protection is providing adequate protection

https://www.mja.com.au/sites/default/files/issues/177_04_190802/tan10751...

And if this is correct assumption...then That person on the plane was highly contagious and droplets were in ventilation system of the airplane. Virus is probably still in ventilation system. Only question is..How long can ebola survive in ventilation system of airplane.

Of course, this muppet was killed due to negrocare, corrupted markets and an illegal alien, but you could just say obamabola killed him. Only the first of many to come, I am afraid.

How long can Ebola live outside the body?

Similar to many things with the Ebolaviruses, their ability to survive outside a living organism is not well-known or studied. Most viruses, contrary to popular belief and the characteristics of bacteria, cannot survive long against the raw elements. The usual influenza or cold virus will survive outside living tissue for about three days, but other viruses, namely HIV, can only make due for a couple of minutes. Ebola is certainly a hardy virus and might be able to make it for over a week but no less than three or four days. So the range is anywhere from three to ten days in all likelihood. The reason viruses die so quickly outside (and bacteria do not) is because, when hit with high-energy electromagnetic waves (for instance, sunlight), they break apart with their abyssal level protection. Since viruses do not actually "eat," they cannot starve, and they do not get too cold (but can get too hot, for their proteins denature; why did you think we get fevers?). In general, very little is known about Ebola. Even how it is transmitted is unknown.

Apparently, the nurse in Sierra Leone lied to a crowd in a local fish market that there was no Ebola outbreak and that the claims were designed to cover up "cannibalistic practices".

How stupid!  I say the authorities should start cracking some heads....and maybe...errr... taste some brains.

Just a small taste?  Or just enough to make brain guacamole...no big deal.  Certainly no "cannibalism". Come on!  No one is cooking human livers or anything even close to that!

Hey!  Regarding Nigeria's response to Ebola, President Goodfuck Jonathan has transferred the Ebola operation command to his most trusted officials.  Yep, he pulled the "A-Team" off of the missing school girls situation and has them focusing instead on stopping this horrible outbreak.

So no worries!   They got this covered.

What other destinations are available from the Monrovia airport and who, how many did he have contact with before boarding to Lagos.

The transmission vector can be geometrically increased if he was in contact with passengers headed to many different destinations.

Due to the corruption of the Western Media, you cannot assume we are getting correct information.

The numbers give the new cases as 108 from July 21 to July 23.  Don't know if that is a 48 hour period or 72 hours.  If 48 hours, that is an increase in total cases of 10% in 2 days or approx 5% per day.  Using the law of 72, the number of total cases would double in 72/5 = 14.4 days.  Call it 15 days.  This means at current rates the disease growth is 4 fold per month.  Using a start number of 1000 on July 20, that is 4,000 on August 20, 16,000 on September 20, 64,000 on October 20, 256,000 on November 20, 1,024,000 on December 20. Well you get the picture.  If geography and containment efforts have been slowing the spread and it now becomes a problem in a city of 20,000,000 the the growth rate may be faster.

My work partner was assigned back in June to Liberia.

We were broken up because I was needed in Asia.

He has returned to another African country.

The virus was not something he was worried about at the time, as he told me there were a couple of simple precautions to take. At that time, the virus had already invaded Monrovia.

However, there have been some reports of the virus being capable of Airborne Transmission. I cannot confirm it, but I do not put a lot of credit at this time vis a vis airborne communicability.

Having had Rift Fever years ago, these diseases are serious.

At this point, I am concerned the virus has not been contained sufficiently to prevent its spread via air travel to other continents.

I am sure there are many experts more versed in this than a layman like myself, but this is a potentially dangerous situation.

Just be aware, no matter where you live at this point until some kind of containment is announced.

All it takes is one active infected individual traveling from Africa via Europe to Asia or North/South America to create a problem.

If we have an epidemic, what are some of the things that can happen when everyone is too sick or scared to go to work?

Loss of food delivery to grocery stores - starvation

Loss of gas and electricity - lack of heat, cooking, water pumps and water wells powered by electricity

Loss of social services - anarchy

Loss of the rule of law - anarchy

Loss of water treatment facilities

Loss of computerized prescriptions for physical and mental health

Loss of institutions and prisons

Maybe nothing will happen to Americans and maybe something will happen here. Isn't it better to wonder why the hell you bought all this crap than to wish to God you had bought all that stuff?

Ebola was created in a lab like HIV was.

first cases of HIV were in NYC in 1978, gay men were the targets to test on.

They were always going to city VD clinics

First case showed up in Africa 2 yrs after.
